Expanding around null hypersurfaces, such as generic Kerr black hole horizons, using co-rotating Kruskal-Israel-like coordinates we study the associated surface charges, their symmetries and the corresponding phase space within Einstein gravity. Our surface charges are not integrable in general. Their integrable part generates an algebra including superrotations and a BMS_3-type algebra that we dub "T-Witt algebra". The non-integrable part accounts for the flux passing through the null hypersurface. We put our results in the context of earlier constructions of near horizon symmetries, soft hair and of the program to semi-classically identify Kerr black hole microstates.
A black hole is superentropic if it violates the reverse isoperimetric inequality. Recently, some studies have indicated that some four dimensional superentropic black holes have the null hypersurface caustics (NHC) outside their event horizons. In this paper, we extend to explore whether or not the NHC exists in the cases of high dimensional superentropic black holes. We consider the singly rotating Kerr-AdS superentropic black holes in arbitrary dimensions and the singly rotating charged superentropic black hole in five-dimensional minimal gauged supergravity, and find that the NHC exists ou…
We consider field quantization on an arbitrary null hypersurface in curved spacetime. We discuss the de Sitter horizon as the simplest example, relating the horizon quantization to the standard Fock space in the cosmological patch. We stress the universality of null-hypersurface kinematics, using it to generalize the Unruh effect to vacuum or thermal states with respect to null "time translations" on arbitrary (e.g. non-stationary) horizons. Finally, we consider a general pure state on a null hypersurface, which is divided into past and future halves, as when a bifurcation surface divides an e…
We present arguments pointing to a behavior of the string free energy in the presence of a black hole horizon similar to the Atick-Witten dependence on temperature beyond the Hagedorn transition. We give some evidence based on orbifold techniques applied to Rindler space and further support is found within a Hamiltonian approach. However, we argue that the interpretation in terms of a reduction of degrees of freedom is confronted by serious problems. Finally, we point out the problems concerning heuristic red-shift arguments and the local interpretation of thermodynamical quantities.
There are (at least) two surfaces of particular interest in eternal de Sitter space. One is the timelike hypersurface constituting the lab wall of a static patch observer and the other is the future boundary of global de Sitter space. We study both linear and non-linear deformations of four-dimensional de Sitter space which obey the Einstein equation. Our deformations leave the induced conformal metric and trace of the extrinsic curvature unchanged for a fixed hypersurface. This hypersurface is either timelike within the static patch or spacelike in the future diamond. We require the deformati…
The isolated horizon formalism recently introduced by Ashtekar et al. aims at providing a quasi-local concept of a black hole in equilibrium in an otherwise possibly dynamical spacetime. In this formalism, a hierarchy of geometrical structures is constructed on a null hypersurface. On the other side, the 3+1 formulation of general relativity provides a powerful setting for studying the spacetime dynamics, in particular gravitational radiation from black hole systems. Here we revisit the kinematics and dynamics of null hypersurfaces by making use of some 3+1 slicing of spacetime. In particular,…
We propose a new definition of "horizon molecules" in Causal Set Theory following pioneering work by Dou and Sorkin. The new concept applies for any causal horizon and its intersection with any spacelike hypersurface. In the continuum limit, as the discreteness scale tends to zero, the leading behaviour of the expected number of horizon molecules is shown to be the area of the horizon in discreteness units, up to a dimension dependent factor of order one. We also determine the first order corrections to the continuum value, and show how such corrections can be exploited to obtain further geome…
We address the question of the uniqueness of the Schwarzschild black hole by considering the following question: How many meaningful solutions of the Einstein equations exist that agree with the Schwarzschild solution (with a fixed mass m) everywhere except maybe on a codimension one hypersurface? The perhaps surprising answer is that the solution is unique (and uniquely the Schwarzschild solution everywhere in spacetime) *unless* the hypersurface is the event horizon of the Schwarzschild black hole, in which case there are actually an infinite number of distinct solutions. We explain this res…
In Lovelock theories, gravity can travel faster or slower than light. The causal structure is determined by the characteristic hypersurfaces. We generalise a recent result of Izumi to prove that any Killing horizon is a characteristic hypersurface for all gravitational degrees of freedom of a Lovelock theory. Hence gravitational signals cannot escape from the region inside such a horizon. We investigate the hyperbolicity of Lovelock theories by determining the characteristic hypersurfaces for various backgrounds. First we consider Ricci flat type N spacetimes. We show that characteristic hyper…
In this paper we find new examples of Riemannian manifolds with outermost apparent horizons with nonspherical topology, in dimensions four and above. More precisely, for any $n,m\ge1$, we construct asymptotically flat, scalar flat Riemannian manifolds containing smooth outermost minimal hypersurfaces with topology $S^n\times S^{m+1}$. In the context of general relativity these hypersurfaces correspond to outermost apparent horizons of black holes.
The common intrinsic geometry shared by all the null hypersurfaces gives rise to the asymptotic symmetries found on the null infinities $\mathscr I^\pm$ and the isolated horizons $Δ$. In this work, the properties of a null hypersurface are reviewed and the invariance of its intrinsic geometry ($n^an^bh_{ab}$) is revealed under the spacetime conformal transformation. The generators, i.e., infinitesimal symmetries, of the conformal transformation tangent to the null hypersurface are defined and classified by their effects on the induced metric and the normal vector field. Two particular examples…
Recently it was discovered that null hypersurfaces can develop caustics outside the event horizon of super-entropic Kerr-AdS black holes, in contrast to the usual Kerr-AdS case. In this work we explore a few more examples of black hole spacetimes in which such exterior caustics can develop. If a closed null curve is present, e.g., in the case of Taub-NUT and the "transunital" Kerr-AdS spacetimes, then it coincides with a null hypersurface caustic (NHC) of a minimal separation parameter. Thus a spacetime on the verge of forming closed timelike curves could develop a caustic. Known examples of s…
The membrane paradigm displays underlying connections between a timelike stretched horizon and a null boundary (such as a black hole horizon) and bridges the gravitational dynamics of the horizon with fluid dynamics. In this work, we revisit the membrane viewpoint of a finite distance null boundary and present a unified geometrical treatment to the stretched horizon and the null boundary based on the rigging technique of hypersurfaces. This allows us to provide a unified geometrical description of null and timelike hypersurfaces, which resolves the singularity of the null limit appearing in th…
The definition of matter states on spacelike hypersurfaces of a 1+1 dimensional black hole spacetime is considered. The effect of small quantum fluctuations of the mass of the black hole due to the quantum nature of the infalling matter is taken into account. It is then shown that the usual approximation of treating the gravitational field as a classical background on which matter is quantized, breaks down near the black hole horizon. Specifically, on any hypersurface that captures both infalling matter near the horizon and Hawking radiation, quantum fluctuations in the background geometry bec…
We study thermodynamic properties and phase structures of topological black holes in Einstein theory with a Gauss-Bonnet term and a negative cosmological constant. The event horizon of these topological black holes can be a hypersurface with positive, zero or negative constant curvature. When the horizon is a zero curvature hypersurface, the thermodynamic properties of black holes are completely the same as those of black holes without the Gauss-Bonnet term, although the two black hole solutions are quite different. When the horizon is a negative constant curvature hypersurface, the thermodyna…
We explore time-symmetric hypersurfaces containing apparent horizons of black objects in a 5d spacetime with one coordinate compactified on a circle. We find a phase transition within the family of such hypersurfaces: the horizon has different topology for different parameters. The topology varies from $S^3$ to $S^2 \times S^1$. This phase transition is discontinuous -- the topology of the horizon changes abruptly. We explore the behavior around the critical point and present a possible phase diagram.
We review the Seiberg-Witten instability of topological black holes in Anti-de Sitter space due to nucleation of brane-anti-brane pairs. We start with black holes in general relativity, and then proceed to discuss the peculiar property of topological black holes in Hořava-Lifshitz gravity -- they have instabilities that occur at only finite range of distance away from the horizon. This behavior is not unique to black holes in Hořava-Lifshitz theory, as it is also found in the relatively simple systems of charged black hole with dilaton hair that arise in low energy limit of string theory.
Quantum fluctuations in the background geometry of a black hole are shown to affect the propagation of matter states falling into the black hole in a foliation that corresponds to observations purely outside the horizon. A state that starts as a Minkowski vacuum at past null infinity gets entangled with the gravity sector, so that close to the horizon it can be represented by a statistical ensemble of orthogonal states. We construct an operator connecting the different states and comment on the possible physical meaning of the above construction. The induced energy-momentum tensor of these sta…
We analyze the dynamics of a four-dimensional null hypersurface in a five-dimensional bulk spacetime with Einstein-Yang-Mills fields. In an appropriate ansatz, the projection of the field equations onto the hypersurface takes the form of conservation laws for relativistic hydrodynamics with global non-abelian charges. A Chern-Simons term in the bulk action corresponds to anomalies in the global charges, with a vorticity term arising in the hydrodynamics. We derive the entropy current and obtain unique expressions for some of the leading-order transport coefficients (in the abelian case, all of…
We study black hole radiation of a Reissner-Nordstrom black hole with an electric charge in the framework of quantum gravity. Based on a canonical quantization for a spherically symmetric geometry, under physically plausible assumptions, we solve the Wheeler-De Witt equation in the regions not only between the outer apparent horizon and the spatial infinity but also between the spacetime singularity and the inner apparent horizon, and then show that the mass loss rate of an evaporating black hole due to thermal radiation agrees with the semiclassical result when we choose an integration consta…
I revisit the calculation of infinite-dimensional symmetries that emerge in the vicinity of isolated horizons. I focus the attention on extremal black holes, for which the isometry algebra that preserves a sensible set of asymptotic boundary conditions at the horizon strictly includes the BMS algebra. The conserved charges that correspond to this BMS sector, however, reduce to those of superrotation, generating only two copies of Witt algebra. For more general horizon isometries, in contrast, the charge algebra does include both Witt and supertranslations, being similar to BMS but s.str. diffe…
We study thermodynamic evaporation of Schwarzschild-de Sitter black holes in terms of a low energy perturbation theory. A small black hole which is far from the cosmological horizon and observers at the spacelike hypersurface where black hole attraction and expansion of cosmological horizon balance exactly are considered. In the low energy perturbation, scalar field equations are solved in both regions of the hypersurface and scattering amplitudes are derived. And then the desired thermal temperatures from the two horizons are obtained as a ``minimal'' value of the statistical thermal temperat…
