Dwarf Galaxies: From the Deep Universe to the Present, Proceedings of the IAU Symposium No. 344, 2019, eds. K. B. W. McQuinn & S. Stierwalt, p. 288
Here I briefly highlight our studies of the gas content, kinematics and star formation in nearby dwarf galaxies (D < 10 Mpc) based on the `Local Volume HI Survey' (LVHIS, Koribalski et al. 2018), which was conducted with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA). The LVHIS sample consists of nearly 100 galaxies, including new discoveries, spanning a large diversity in size, shape, mass and degree of peculiarity. The hydrogen properties of dwarf galaxies in two nearby groups, Sculptor and CenA / M83, are analysed and compared with many rather isolated dwarf galaxies. Around 10% of LVHIS galaxies are transitional or mixed-type dwarf galaxies (dIrr/dSph), the formation of which is explored. - I also provide a brief update on WALLABY Early Science, where we focus on studying the HI properties of galaxies as a function of environment. WALLABY (Dec < +30 degr, z < 0.26) is conducted with the Australian SKA Pathfinder (ASKAP), a 6-km diameter array of 36 x 12-m dishes, each equipped with wide-field (30 sq degr) Chequerboard Phased Array Feeds.
We present the first results of a campaign of ENZO cosmological simulations targeting the shocked and the neutral parts of the cosmic web, obtained with Supercomputing facilities provided by the INAF-CINECA agreement.
We combine high resolution N-body simulations with deep observations of neutral hydrogen (HI) in nearby galaxy groups in order to explore two well-known theories of HI cloud formation: HI stripping by galaxy interactions and dark matter minihalos with embedded HI gas. This paper presents new data from three galaxy groups, Canes Venatici I, NGC 672, and NGC 45, and assembles data from our previous galaxy group campaign to generate a rich HI cloud archive to compare to our simulated data. We find no HI clouds in the Canes Venatici I, NGC 672, or NGC 45 galaxy groups. We conclude that HI clouds i…
The evolution of neutral hydrogen (HI) across redshifts is a powerful probe of cosmology, large scale structure in the universe and the intergalactic medium. Using a data-driven halo model to describe the distribution of HI in the post-reionization universe ($z \sim $ 5 to 0), we obtain the best-fitting parameters from a rich sample of observational data: low redshift 21-cm emission line studies, intermediate redshift intensity mapping experiments, and higher redshift Damped Lyman Alpha (DLA) observations. Our model describes the abundance and clustering of neutral hydrogen across redshifts 0 …
Cosmic reionization was the last major phase transition of hydrogen from neutral to highly ionized in the intergalactic medium (IGM). Current observations show that the IGM is significantly neutral at $z>7$, and largely ionized by $z\sim5.5$. However, most methods to measure the IGM neutral fraction are highly model-dependent, and are limited to when the volume-averaged neutral fraction of the IGM is either relatively low ($\bar{x}_{\rm HI} \lesssim 10^{-3}$) or close to unity ($\bar{x}_{\rm HI}\sim 1$). In particular, the neutral fraction evolution of the IGM at the critical redshift range of…
A long (110 cMpc/$h$) and deep absorption trough in the Ly$α$ forest has been observed extending down to redshift 5.5 in the spectrum of ULAS J0148+0600. Although no Ly$α$ transmission is detected, Ly$β$ spikes are present which has led to claims that the gas along this trough must be ionized. Using high resolution cosmological radiative transfer simulations in large volumes, we show that in a scenario where reionization ends late ($z \sim 5.2$), our simulations can reproduce troughs as long as observed. In this model, we find that the troughs are caused by islands of neutral hydrogen. Small i…
By means of zoom-in hydrodynamic simulations we quantify the amount of neutral hydrogen (HI) hosted by groups and clusters of galaxies. Our simulations, which are based on an improved formulation of smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH), include radiative cooling, star formation, metal enrichment and supernova feedback, and can be split in two different groups, depending on whether feedback from active galactic nuclei (AGN) is turned on or off. Simulations are analyzed to account for HI self-shielding and the presence of molecular hydrogen. We find that the mass in neutral hydrogen of dark mat…
We present new low-resolution HI spectral line imaging, obtained with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (JVLA), of the star-forming Magellanic irregular galaxy UGCA 105. This nearby (D = 3.39+/-0.25 Mpc), low mass [M_HI=(4.3+/-0.5)x10^8 Solar masses] system harbors a large neutral gas disk (HI radius ~7.2 kpc at the N_HI=10^20 cm^-2 level) that is roughly twice as large as the stellar disk at the B-band R_25 isophote. We explore the neutral gas dynamics of this system, fitting tilted ring models in order to extract a well-sampled rotation curve. The rotation velocity rises in the inner disk,…
The net radial flow velocity of gas is an important parameter for understanding galaxy evolution. It is difficult to measure in the presence of the elliptical orbits of an oval distortion because the mathematical model describing the observed velocity is degenerate in the unknown velocity components. A method is developed in this paper that breaks the degeneracy using additional information about the angular frequency of the oval distortion. The method is applied to the neutral hydrogen in the oval distortion of NGC 4736. The neutral hydrogen is flowing inward at a mean rate of -6.1 $\pm$ 1.9 …
Using high-resolution data from the Galactic Arecibo L-Band Feed Array HI (GALFA-HI) survey, we show that linear structure in Galactic neutral hydrogen (HI) correlates with the magnetic field orientation implied by Planck 353 GHz polarized dust emission. The structure of the neutral interstellar medium is more tightly coupled to the magnetic field than previously known. At high Galactic latitudes, where the Planck data are noise-dominated, the HI data provide an independent constraint on the Galactic magnetic field orientation, and hence the local dust polarization angle. We detect strong cros…
Based on sensitive CO measurements from HERACLES and HI data from THINGS, we show that the azimuthally averaged radial distribution of the neutral gas surface density (Sigma_HI + Sigma_H2) in 33 nearby spiral galaxies exhibits a well-constrained universal exponential distribution beyond 0.2*r25 (inside of which the scatter is large) with less than a factor of two scatter out to two optical radii r25. Scaling the radius to r25 and the total gas surface density to the surface density at the transition radius, i.e., where Sigma_HI and Sigma_H2 are equal, as well as removing galaxies that are inte…
Using a simple model of photodissociated atomic hydrogen on a galactic scale, it is possible to derive total hydrogen volume densities. These densities, obtained through a combination of atomic hydrogen, far-ultraviolet and metallicity data, provide an independent probe of the combined atomic and molecular hydrogen gas in galactic disks. We present a new, flexible and fully automated procedure using this simple model. This automated method will allow us to take full advantage of a host of available data on galaxies in order to calculate total hydrogen volume densities of giant molecular clouds…
We use synthetic sightlines drawn through snapshots of the Technicolor Dawn simulations to explore how the statistics of neutral oxygen OI absorbers respond to hydrogen reionization. The ionization state of the circumgalactic medium (CGM) initially roughly tracks that of the intergalactic medium, but beginning at $z=8$ the CGM grows systematically more neutral owing to self-shielding. Weak absorbers trace diffuse gas that lies farther from halos, hence they are ionized first, whereas stronger systems are less sensitive to reionization. The overall OI covering fraction decreases slowly with tim…
Above redshift 6, the dominant source of neutral hydrogen in the Universe shifts from localized clumps in and around galaxies and filaments to a pervasive, diffuse component of the intergalactic medium (IGM). This transition tracks the global neutral fraction of hydrogen in the IGM and can be studied, in principle, through the redshifted 21 cm hyperfine transition line. During the last half of the reionization epoch, the mean (global) brightness temperature of the redshifted 21 cm emission is proportional to the neutral fraction, but at earlier times (10 < z < 25), the mean brightness temperat…
In order to precisely measure the cosmological parameters and answer the fundamental questions in cosmology, it is necessary to develop new, powerful cosmological probes, in addition to the proposed next-generation optical survey projects. The neutral hydrogen 21 cm sky surveys will provide a promising tool to study the late-universe evolution, helping shed light on the nature of dark energy. The Square Kilometre Array is the largest radio telescope in the world to be constructed in the near future, and it will push the 21 cm cosmology into a new era and greatly promote the development of cosm…
While there is no lack of evidence for the accretion of stellar systems onto nearby galaxies, direct evidence for the accretion of gas without stars is scarce. Here we consider an inventory of starless gas "clouds" in and around galaxies of the Local Group to discern their general properties and see how they might appear in distant systems. The conclusion is that accreting gas without stars is detected almost entirely within the circumgalactic medium of large galaxies and is rare otherwise. If our Local Group is any example, the best place to detect starless gas clouds is relatively close to g…
We present the conditional HI (neutral hydrogen) Mass Function (HIMF) conditioned on observed optical properties, $M_{\text{r}}$ ($r$-band absolute magnitude) and $C_{\text{ur}}$ ($u-r$ color), for a sample of 7709 galaxies from ALFALFA (40% data release - $α.40$) which overlaps with a common volume in SDSS DR7. Based on the conditional HIMF we find that the luminous red, luminous blue and faint blue populations dominate the total HIMF at the high-mass end, knee and the low-mass end respectively. We use the conditional HIMF to derive the underlying distribution function of $Ω_{\text{HI}}$ (HI …
Using a spectral stacking technique, we measure the neutral hydrogen (HI) properties of a sample of galaxies at $z < 0.11$ across 35 pointings of the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT). The radio data contains 1,895 galaxies with redshifts and positions known from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We carefully quantified the effects of sample bias, aperture used to extract spectra, sidelobes and weighting technique and use our data to provide a new estimate for the cosmic HI mass density. We find a cosmic HI mass density of $Ω_{\rm HI} = (4.02 \pm 0.26)\times 10^{-4} h_{70}^{-1}$ a…
We present the detection of hydrogen fluoride, HF, in two luminous nearby galaxies NGC 253 and NGC 4945 using the Heterodyne Instrument for the Far-Infrared (HIFI) on board the Herschel Space Observatory. The HF line toward NGC 253 has a P-Cygni profile, while an asymmetric absorption profile is seen toward NGC 4945. The P-Cygni profile in NGC 253 suggests an outflow of molecular gas with a mass of M(H$_2$)$_{out}$ $\sim$ 1 $\times$ 10$^7$ M$_\odot$ and an outflow rate as large as M $\sim$ 6.4 M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$. In the case of NGC 4945, the axisymmetric velocity components in the HF line pro…
We present a pipeline based on a random forest classifier for the identification of high column-density clouds of neutral hydrogen (i.e. the Lyman limit systems, LLSs) in absorption within large spectroscopic surveys of z>3 quasars. We test the performance of this method on mock quasar spectra that reproduce the expected data quality of the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) and the WHT Enhanced Area Velocity Explorer (WEAVE) surveys, finding >90% completeness and purity for N(HI)> 10^17.2 cm^-2 LLSs against quasars of g < 23 mag at z~3.5-3.7. After training and applying our method on…

We use observations made with the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) to probe the neutral hydrogen (HI) gas content of field galaxies in the VIMOS VLT Deep Survey (VVDS) 14h field at $z \approx 0.32$. Because the HI emission from individual galaxies is too faint to detect at this redshift, we use an HI spectral stacking technique using the known optical positions and redshifts of the 165 galaxies in our sample to co-add their HI spectra and thus obtain the average HI mass of the galaxies. Stacked HI measurements of 165 galaxies show that 95 per cent of the neutral gas is found in blue, sta…
I investigate whether it is possible to reconcile the recent ALFALFA observation that the neutral hydrogen (HI) mass function (HIMF) across different galactic densities has the same, non-flat, faint-end slope, with the observations of isolated galaxies and many galaxy groups that show their HIMFs to have flat faint-end slopes. I find that a fairly simple model in which the position of the knee in the mass function of each individual group is allowed to vary is able to account for both of these observations. If this model reflects reality, the ALFALFA result points to an interesting `conspiracy…
We derive total (atomic + molecular) hydrogen densities in giant molecular clouds (GMCs) in the nearby spiral galaxy M33 using a method that views the atomic hydrogen near regions of recent star formation as the product of photodissociation. Far-UV photons emanating from a nearby OB association produce a layer of atomic hydrogen on the surfaces of nearby GMCs. Our approach provides an estimate of the total hydrogen density in these GMCs from observations of the excess far-UV emission that reaches the GMC from the OB association, and the excess 21-cm radio HI emission produced after these far-U…
Several neutral hydrogen (HI) cavities have been detected in the Milky Way and other nearby star forming galaxies. It has been suggested that at least a fraction of them may be expanding supershells driven by the combined mechanical feedback from multiple supernovae occurring in an OB association. Yet most extragalactic HI holes have neither a demonstrated expansion velocity, nor an identified OB association inside them. In this work, we report on the discovery of an unbroken expanding HI supershell in the nearby spiral galaxy M101, with an UV emitting OB association inside it. We measure its …
This review summarizes recent studies of the cold neutral hydrogen gas associated with galaxies probed via the HI 21-cm absorption line. HI 21-cm absorption against background radio-loud quasars is a powerful tool to study the neutral gas distribution and kinematics in foreground galaxies from kilo-parsec to parsec scales. At low redshifts (z<0.4), it has been used to characterize the distribution of high column density neutral gas around galaxies and study the connection of this gas with the galaxy's optical properties. The neutral gas around galaxies has been found to be patchy in distributi…
We present the results of the Velocity Coordinate Spectrum (VCS) technique to calculate the velocity power spectrum of turbulence in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) in 21cm emission. We have obtained a velocity spectral index of -3.85 and an injection scale of 2.3 kpc. The spectral index is steeper than the Kolmogorov index which is expected for shock-dominated turbulence which is in agreement with past works on the SMC gas dynamics. The injection scale of 2.3 kpc suggests that tidal interactions with the Large Magellanic Cloud are the dominate driver of turbulence in this dwarf galaxy. This …
We establish correlations between equivalent widths of eight diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs), and examine their correlations with atomic hydrogen, molecular hydrogen, and EB-V . The DIBs are centered at λλ5780.5, 6204.5, 6283.8, 6196.0, 6613.6, 5705.1, 5797.1, and 5487.7, in decreasing order of Pearsonâs correlation coefficient with N(H) (here defined as the column density of neutral hydrogen), ranging from 0.96 to 0.82. We find the equivalent width of λ5780.5 is better correlated with column densities of H than with E(B-V) or H2, confirming earlier results based on smaller datasets. We show…
One of the outstanding questions in astronomy today is how gas flows from the circumgalactic medium (CGM) onto the disks of galaxies and then transitions from the diffuse atomic medium into molecular star-forming cores. For studies of the CGM, the Next Generation Very Large Array (ngVLA) will have the sensitivity and resolution to measure the sizes of the neutral atomic hydrogen (HI) disks of galaxies and complete a census of the HI content around galaxies. Within galaxies, the ngVLA will be able to resolve HI clouds in large numbers of galaxies beyond the Local Group providing measurements of…
Molecular hydrogen is the most abundant molecule in the universe. A large fraction of H2 forms by association of hydrogen atoms adsorbed on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), where formation rates depend crucially on the H sticking probability. We have experimentally studied PAH hydrogenation by exposing coronene cations, confined in a radiofrequency ion trap, to gas phase atomic hydrogen. A systematic increase of the number of H atoms adsorbed on the coronene with the time of exposure is observed. Odd coronene hydrogenation states dominate the mass spectrum up to 11 H atoms attached. Th…

We present new KAT-7 observations of the neutral hydrogen (HI) spectral line, and polarized radio continuum emission, in the grand design spiral M83. These observations provide a sensitive probe of the outer disk structure and kinematics, revealing a vast and massive neutral gas distribution that appears to be tightly coupled to the interaction of the galaxy with the environment. We present a new rotation curve extending out to a radius of 50 kpc. Based on our new HI dataset and comparison with multiwavelength data from the literature we consider the impact of mergers on the outer disk and dis…
This is the first in a series of three papers describing a project with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope to measure abundances of the neutral interstellar medium (ISM) in a sample of 9 nearby star-forming galaxies. The goal is to assess the (in)homogeneities of the multiphase ISM in galaxies where the bulk of metals can be hidden in the neutral phase, yet the metallicity is inferred from the ionized gas in the HII regions. The sample, spanning a wide range in physical properties, is to date the best suited to investigate the metallicity behavior of the neutral gas …
We investigate spatial variations of turbulent properties in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) by using neutral hydrogen HI observations. With the goal of testing the importance of stellar feedback on HI turbulence, we define central and outer SMC regions based on the star formation rate (SFR) surface density, as well as the HI integrated intensity. We use the structure function and the Velocity Channel Analysis (VCA) to calculate the power-law index (gamma) for both underlying density and velocity fields in these regions. In all cases, our results show essentially no difference in gamma betwee…
We use the 21 cm emission line data from the DINGO-VLA project to study the atomic hydrogen gas H\,{\textsc i} of the Universe at redshifts $z<0.1$. Results are obtained using a stacking analysis, combining the H\,{\textsc i} signals from 3622 galaxies extracted from 267 VLA pointings in the G09 field of the Galaxy and Mass Assembly Survey (GAMA). Rather than using a traditional one-dimensional spectral stacking method, a three-dimensional cubelet stacking method is used to enable deconvolution and the accurate recovery of average galaxy fluxes from this high-resolution interferometric dataset…
We present the results of a new sensitive survey of neutral hydrogen above and below the Galactic Center with the Green Bank Telescope. The observations extend up to Galactic latitude | b | < 10 deg with an effective angular resolution of 9.5' and an average rms brightness temperature noise of 40 mK in a 1 km/s channel. The survey reveals the existence of a population of anomalous high-velocity clouds extending up to heights of about 1.5 kpc from the Galactic Plane and showing no signature of Galactic rotation. These clouds have local standard of rest velocities | Vlsr | < 360 km/s and, assumi…
Improving photometric redshifts of Epoch of Reionization galaxies: a new empirical transmission curve with neutral hydrogen damping wing Ly$α$ absorption
Star forming galaxies are believed to be a major source of Lyman Continuum (LyC) radiation responsible for reionizing the early Universe. Direct observations of escaping ionizing radiation have however been few and with low escape fractions. In the local Universe, only ~10 emitters have been observed, with typical escape fractions of a few percent. The mechanisms regulating this escape need to be strongly evolving with redshift in order to account for the Epoch of Reionization. Gas content and star formation feedback are among the main suspects, known to both regulate neutral gas coverage and …
We present a comprehensive analysis of the multi-phase structure of the interstellar medium (ISM) and the stellar kinematics in the edge-on nearby galaxy UGC 10205 using integral field spectroscopy (IFS) data taken with MEGARA at the GTC. We explore both the neutral and the ionized gas phases using the interstellar Na ${\small I}$ D doublet absorption (LR$-$V set-up, R $\sim$ 6000) and the H$α$ emission line (HR$-$R set-up, R $\sim$ 18000), respectively. The high-resolution data show the complexity of the H$α$ emission line profile revealing the detection of up to three kinematically distinct …
Strong gravitational lensing provides some of the deepest views of the Universe, enabling studies of high-redshift galaxies only possible with next-generation facilities without the lensing phenomenon. To date, 21 cm radio emission from neutral hydrogen has only been detected directly out to z~0.2, limited by the sensitivity and instantaneous bandwidth of current radio telescopes. We discuss how current and future radio interferometers such as the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) will detect lensed HI emission in individual galaxies at high redshift. Our calculations rely on a semi-analytic galaxy…
Emission features formed through Raman scattering with atomic hydrogen provide unique and crucial information to probe the distribution and kinematics of a thick neutral region illuminated by a strong far UV emission source. We introduce a new 3 dimensional Monte-Carlo code in order to describe the radiative transfer of line photons that are subject to Raman and Rayleigh scattering with atomic hydrogen. In this code entitled "${\bf S}$ejong Radiative ${\bf T}$r${\bf a}$nsfer through ${\bf R}$aman and Rayleigh ${\bf S}$cattering (${\it STaRS}$), each photon is traced until escape with a tag att…
