The empirical studies of cold gas content serve as an essential aspect in comprehending the star formation activities and evolution in galaxies. However, it is not straightforward to understand these processes because they depend on various physical properties of the Interstellar Medium. Massive FRI/II type radio galaxies rich in molecular hydrogen with less star formation activities are known as radio Molecular Hydrogen Emission Galaxies (MOHEGs). We present a study of neutral hydrogen gas-associated radio MOHEGs at redshifts <0.2 probed via the HI 21-cm absorption line. Neutral hydrogen is detected in 70% of these galaxies, which are located at a distance of 8 - 120 kiloparsec from the neighboring galaxies. These galaxies show a scarcity of HI gas as compared to merging galaxies at similar redshifts. We found no strong correlation between N(HI), N(H), and galaxy properties, independent of whether the HI is assumed to be cold or warm, indicating that the atomic gas is probably playing no important role in star formation. The relationship between total hydrogen gas surface density and star formation surface density deviates from the standard Kennicutt-Schmidt law. Our study highlights the importance of HI studies and offers insights into the role of atomic and molecular hydrogen gas in explaining the properties of these galaxies. In the upcoming HI 21-cm absorption surveys with next-generation radio telescopes such as the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) and pathfinder instruments, it may be possible to provide better constraints to such correlations.
Parallax measurements of pulsars allow for accurate measurements of the interstellar electron density and contribute to accurate tests of general relativity using binary systems. The Square Kilometre Array (SKA) will be an ideal instrument for measuring the parallax of pulsars, because it has a very high sensitivity, as well as baselines extending up to several thousands of kilometres. We performed simulations to estimate the number of pulsars for which the parallax can be measured with the SKA and the distance to which a parallax can be measured. We compare two different methods. The first me…
Hydroxyl ($\rm OH$) is known to form efficiently in cold gas ($T\sim 100$K) along with the molecule $\rm H_2$ and can be used as an efficient tracer of the diffuse molecular gas in the interstellar medium (ISM). Using a simple formalism describing the $\rm H\,I/H_2$ transition and a reduced network of major chemical reactions, we present a semi-analytical prescription to estimate the abundances of O-bearing molecules in the diffuse ISM. We show that predictions based on our prescription are in good agreement with the estimates obtained using the MEUDON PDR code which utilizes the full reaction…
Precise measurement of the foreground synchrotron emission, which contaminates the faint polarized cosmic microwave background radiation (CMB), is a major challenge for the next-generation of CMB experiments. To address this, dedicated foreground measurement experiments are being undertaken at radio frequencies between 2 and 40 GHz. Foreground polarized synchrotron emission measurements are particularly challenging, primarily due to the complicated frequency dependence in the presence of Faraday rotation, and are best recovered through broad fractional-bandwidth polarization measurements at fr…
We present an overview of the theory of high-redshift star and X-ray source formation, and how they affect the 21-cm background. Primary focus is given to Lyman alpha pumping and X-ray heating mechanisms at cosmic dawn, opening a new observational window for high-redshift astrophysics by generating sizable fluctuations in the 21-cm background. We describe observational prospects for power spectrum analysis and 3D tomography (imaging) of the signature of these early astrophysical sources by SKA1-LOW and SKA2.
Gravitational lensing has seen a surge of interest in the past few years. The handful of strong lensing systems known in the year 2000 has now been replaced with hundreds, thanks to innovative multi-wavelength selection, and there is an imminent prospect of thousands of lenses from Herschel and other sub-millimetre surveys. Euclid and the Square Kilometre Array promise tens or even hundreds of thousands. Gravitational lensing is one of the very few probes capable of mapping dark matter halo distributions. Lensing also provides independent cosmological parameter estimates and enables the study …

One of the major science goals of the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) is to understand the role played by atomic hydrogen (HI) gas in the evolution of galaxies throughout cosmic time. The hyperfine transition line of the hydrogen atom at 21-cm is one of the best tools to detect and study the properties of HI gas associated with galaxies. In this article, we review our current understanding of HI gas and its relationship with galaxies through observations of the 21-cm line both in emission and absorption. In addition, we provide an overview of the HI science that will be possible with SKA and its …

Molecules reside broadly in the interstellar space and can be detected via spectroscopic observations. To date, more than 271 molecular species have been identified in interstellar medium or circumstellar envelopes. Molecular spectroscopic parameters measured in laboratory make the identification of new species and derivation of physical parameters possible. These spectroscopic parameters are systematically collected into databases, two of the most commonly used being the CDMS and JPL databases. While new spectroscopic parameters are continuously measured/calculated and added to those database…

The intra-cluster and inter-galactic media (ICM, IGM) that pervade the large scale structure of the Universe are known to be magnetised at sub-micro Gauss to micro Gauss levels and to contain cosmic rays (CRs). The acceleration of CRs and their evolution along with that of magnetic fields in these media is still not well understood. Diffuse radio sources of synchrotron origin associated with the ICM such as radio halos, relics and mini-halos are direct probes of the underlying mechanisms of CR acceleration. Observations with radiotelescopes such as the GMRT, the VLA and the WSRT (0.15 - 2 GHz)…
This paper considers the suitability of a number of emerging and future instruments for the study of radio recombination lines (RRLs) at frequencies below 200 MHz. These lines arise only in low-density regions of the ionized interstellar medium, and they may represent a frequency-dependent foreground for next-generation experiments trying to detect H I signals from the Epoch of Reionization and Dark Ages ("21-cm cosmology"). We summarize existing decametre-wavelength observations of RRLs, which have detected only carbon RRLs. We then show that, for an interferometric array, the primary instrum…
The discovery of a pulsar (PSR) in orbit around a black hole (BH) is expected to provide a superb new probe of relativistic gravity and BH properties. Apart from a precise mass measurement for the BH, one could expect a clean verification of the dragging of space-time caused by the BH spin. In order to measure the quadrupole moment of the BH for testing the no-hair theorem of general relativity (GR), one has to hope for a sufficiently massive BH. In this respect, a PSR orbiting the super-massive BH in the center of our Galaxy would be the ultimate laboratory for gravity tests with PSRs. But ev…
The anticipated discovery of a pulsar in orbit with a black hole is expected to provide a unique laboratory for black hole physics and gravity. In this context, the next generation of radio telescopes, like the Five-hundred-metre Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST) and the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), with their unprecedented sensitivity, will play a key role. In this paper, we investigate the capability of future radio telescopes to probe the spacetime of a black hole and test gravity theories, by timing a pulsar orbiting a stellar-mass-black-hole (SBH). Based on mock data simulations,…
We explore the observability of the neutral hydrogen (HI) and the singly-ionized isotope helium-3 ($^3$HeII) in the intergalactic medium (IGM) from the Epoch of Reionization down to the local Universe. The hyperfine transition of $^3$HeII, which is not as well known as the HI transition, has energy splitting corresponding to 8 cm. It also has a larger spontaneous decay rate than that of neutral hydrogen, whereas its primordial abundance is much smaller. Although both species are mostly ionized in the IGM, the balance between ionization and recombination in moderately high density regions rende…
This paper presents a review of the topic of galaxy formation and evolution, focusing on basic features of galaxies, and how these observables reveal how galaxies and their stars assemble over cosmic time. I give an overview of the observed properties of galaxies in the nearby universe and for those at higher redshifts up to z~10. This includes a discussion of the major processes in which galaxies assemble and how we can now observe these - including the merger history of galaxies, the gas accretion and star formation rates. I show that for the most massive galaxies mergers and accretion are a…

We present the prospects of extracting information about the Epoch of Reionization by identifying the remaining neutral regions, referred to as islands, in tomographic observations of the redshifted 21-cm signal. Using simulated data sets we show that at late times the 21-cm power spectrum is fairly insensitive to the details of the reionization process but that the properties of the neutral islands can distinguish between different reionization scenarios. We compare the properties of these islands with those of ionized bubbles. At equivalent volume filling fractions, neutral islands tend to b…
The brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) in the majority of relaxed, cool core galaxy clusters is radio loud, showing non-thermal radio jets and lobes ejected by the central active galactic nucleus (AGN). Such relativistic plasma has been unambiguously shown to interact with the surrounding thermal intra-cluster medium (ICM) thanks to spectacular images where the lobe radio emission is observed to fill the cavities in the X-ray-emitting gas. This `radio-mode AGN feedback' phenomenon, which is thought to quench cooling flows, is widespread and is critical to understand the physics of the inner region…
