We explore the limit at which the effective baryonic Y-string model of the junction approaches the mesonic stringlike behavior. We calculate and compare the numerical values of the static potential and energy-density correlators of diquark-quark and quark-antiquark configurations. The gauge model is pure Yang-Mills $SU(3)$ lattice gauge theory at coupling $β=6.0$ and finite temperature. The diquark setup is approximated as two quarks confined within a sphere of radius $0.1$ fm. The lattice data of the potential and energy show that the string binding the diquark-quark configuration displays an identical behavior to the quark-antiquark confining string. However, with the temperature increase to a small enough neighborhood of the critical point $T_{c}$, the gluonic similarities between the two systems do not manifest neither at short nor intermediate distance scales $R<1.0$ fm. The comparison between the potential and the second moment of the action-density correlators for both systems shows significant splitting. This suggests that subsisted baryonic decoupled states overlap with the mesonic spectrum. The baryonic junction's model for the potential and the profile returns a good fit to the numerical lattice data of the diquark-quark arrangement. However, near the critical point, the mesonic string displays large deviations compared to fits of the corresponding quark-antiquark data.
We study the baryonic fluctuations from second to eighth order involving electric charge, baryon number and strangeness below the quark-gluon plasma crossover and numerically known from lattice QCD calculations. By considering a particular realization of the Hadron Resonance Gas model, we provide evidence on the dominant role of quark-diquark degrees of freedom to describe excited baryonic resonances. After proving by means of suitable Polyakov loop correlators that the quark-diquark and the quark-antiquark forces coincide, $V_{\bar q q } (r) = V_{\bar q D } (r) + \textrm{const}$, we find that…
Fluctuations of conserved charges such as baryon number, electric charge and strangeness may provide a test for completeness of states in lattice QCD for three light flavors. We elaborate on the idea that the corresponding susceptibilities can be saturated with excited baryonic states with an underlying quark-diquark structure with a linearly confining interaction. Using Polyakov-loop correlators we show that in the static limit, the quark-diquark potential coincides with the quark-antiquark potential in marked agreement with recent lattice studies. We thus study in a quark-diquark model the b…
We introduce an improved mass formula for the nucleon and delta resonances and show how it emerges from AdS/QCD in a straightforward extension of the 'metric soft wall' gravity dual. The resulting spectrum depends on just one adjustable parameter, characterizing confinement-induced IR deformations of the anti-de Sitter (AdS) metric, and on the fraction of 'good' (i.e. maximally attractive) diquarks in the baryon's quark model wave function. Despite its simplicity, the predicted spectrum describes the masses of all 48 observed light-quark baryon states and their linear trajectory structure with…
We study the role of diquarks in light baryons through point to point baryon correlators. We contrast results from quenched simulations with ones with two flavors of dynamical overlap fermions. The scalar, pseudoscalar and axial vector diquarks are combined with light quarks to form color singlets. The quenched simulation shows large zero mode effects in correlators containing the scalar and pseudoscalar diquark. The two scalar diquarks created by gamma_5 and gamma_0gamma_5 lead to different behavior in baryon correlators, showing that the interaction of diquarks with the third light quark mat…
We extend the chiral Lagrangian with heavy quark-diquark symmetry to quenched and partially quenched theories. These theories are used to derive formulae for the chiral extrapolation of masses and hyperfine splittings of doubly heavy baryons in lattice QCD simulations. A quark-diquark symmetry prediction for the hyperfine splittings of heavy mesons and doubly heavy baryons is rather insensitive to chiral corrections in both quenched and partially quenched QCD. Extrapolation formulae for the doubly heavy baryon electromagnetic transition moments are also determined for the partially quenched th…
Using a confining, symmetry-preserving regularisation of a vector$\times$vector contact interaction, we compute the spectra of ground-state pseudoscalar and vector $(f\bar g)$ mesons, scalar and axial-vector $(fg)$ diquarks, and $J^P=1/2^+, 3/2^+$ $(fgh)$ baryons, where $f,g,h \in \{u,d,s,c,b\}$. The diquark correlations are essentially dynamical and play a key role in formulating and solving the three-valence-quark baryon problems. The baryon spectrum obtained from this largely-algebraic approach reproduces the 22 known experimental masses with an accuracy of $2.9(2.4)$%. It also possesses th…
We examine the nucleon's electromagnetic form factors in a Poincare-covariant Faddeev framework. The three-quark core contributions to the form factors are obtained by employing a quark-diquark approximation. We implement the self-consistent solution for the quark-photon vertex from its inhomogeneous Bethe-Salpeter equation. We find that the resulting transverse parts which add to the Ball-Chiu vertex have no significant impact on nucleon magnetic moments. The current-quark mass evolution of the form factors agrees with results from lattice QCD.
We present results of numerical simulations of the 3+1d Nambu - Jona-Lasinio model with a non-zero baryon chemical potential mu, with particular emphasis on the superfluid diquark condensate and associated susceptibilities. The results, when extrapolated to the zero diquark source limit, are consistent with the existence of a non-zero BCS condensate at high baryon density. The nature of the infinite volume and zero temperature limits are discussed.
In the staggered fermion formulation of lattice QCD, we construct diquark operators to be embedded in singly heavy baryons. The group theoretical connections between the continuum and lattice staggered diquark representations are established.

We evaluate baryon wave functions in both the Coulomb and Landau gauge in lattice QCD. These are constructed from quark propagators calculated with the overlap Dirac operator on quenched gauge configurations at beta = 6. By comparing baryon states that differ in their diquark content, we find evidence for enhanced correlation in the scalar diquark channel, as favored by quark models. We also summarize earlier results for diquark masses in the Landau gauge, casting them in a form more easily compared with subsequent studies.
Mass spectra and wave functions of the $J^P=\frac{1}{2}^+$ $(bcq)$ baryons are calculated by the relativistic Bethe-Salpeter equation\,(BSE) with considering the mixing effects between the $1^+$ and $0^+$ $(bc)$-diquarks inside. Based on the diquark picture, the three-body problem of baryons is transformed into two two-body problems. The BSE and wave functions of the $0^+$ diquark are given, and then solved numerically to obtain the effective mass spectra and form factors. Also we present the wave functions at zero point for the $(bc)$-diquark. Considering the obtained diquark form factors, th…
It is shown that the instanton-induced interaction in qq pairs, iterated in t-channel, leads to a meson-exchange interactions between quarks. In this way one can achieve a simultaneous understanding of low-lying mesons, baryons and the nuclear force. The discussion is general and does not necessarily rely on the instanton-induced interaction. Any nonperturbative gluonic interaction between quarks, which is a source of the dynamical chiral symmetry breaking and explains the $π$ - $ρ$ mass splitting, will imply an effective meson exchange picture in baryons. Due to the (anti)screening there is a…
We present results of a Monte Carlo simulation of a three dimensional Gross-Neveu model with SU(2)xSU(2) chiral symmetry at non-zero baryon chemical potential mu, corresponding to non-zero baryon density. For mu sufficiently large there is a sharp transition between a phase where the chiral symmetry is broken by a condensate <qbar q> and one where the global U(1) baryon number symmetry appears to be broken by a scalar diquark condensate <qq>. There is also tentative evidence for the formation of a weaker pseudoscalar diquark condensate in the high density phase, which violoates parity.
We adopt the heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory (HBChPT) to calculate the scattering lengths of $ϕB_{cc}^{(*)}$ up to $\mathcal{O}(p^3)$, where $ϕ$ is the pseudoscalar mesons. The recoil effect and the mass splitting between the spin-$1\over 2$ and spin-$3\over 2$ doubly charmed baryons are included. In order to give the numerical results, we construct the chiral Lagrangians with heavy diquark-antiquark (HDA) symmetry in a formally covariant approach. Then, we relate the low energy constants (LECs) of the doubly charmed baryons to those of $D^{(*)}$ mesons. The LECs for the $ϕD^{(*)}$ sca…
Point to point vacuum correlators containing diquarks in the color anti-triplet representation are computed both in the quenched approximation and dynamical overlap simulations with two flavors. The scalar, pseudoscalar and axial vector diquarks are combined with light quarks to form color singlets. The scalar ("good") diquark channel shows a stronger attraction than the axial vector ("bad") channel in the quenched data set. The pseudoscalar diquark channel shows a finite volume zero mode artifact: the correlator becomes negative at large distance when the quark mass is small. By separating co…
We discuss lattice QCD with one flavor of staggered fermions and show that in the path integral the baryon contributions can be fully separated from quark and diquark contributions. The baryonic degrees of freedom are independent of the gauge field and the corresponding free fermion action describes the baryons through the joint propagation of three quarks. The non-baryonic dynamics is described by quark and diquark terms that couple to the gauge field. When evaluating the quark and diquark contributions in the strong coupling limit the partition function completely factorizes into baryon bags…
We study QCD-like theories with pseudoreal fermions at finite baryon density. Such theories include two-color QCD with quarks in the fundamental representation of the color group as well as any-color QCD with quarks in the adjoint color representation. In all such theories the lightest baryons are diquarks. At zero chemical potential $μ$ they are, together with the pseudoscalar mesons, the Goldstone modes of a spontaneously broken enlarged chiral symmetry group. Using symmetry principles, we derive the low-energy effective Lagrangian for these particles. We find that a second order phase trans…
We describe a calculation of the spectrum of flavour-SU(3) octet and decuplet baryons, their parity partners, and the radial excitations of these systems, made using a symmetry-preserving treatment of a vector-vector contact interaction as the foundation for the relevant few-body equations. Dynamical chiral symmetry breaking generates nonpointlike diquarks within these baryons and hence, using the contact interaction, flavour-antitriplet scalar, pseudoscalar and vector, and flavour-sextet axial-vector quark-quark correlations can all play an active role. The model yields reasonable masses for …
We present results for B_K and selected matrix elements for beyond the standard model interactions obtained in quenched QCD with overlap fermions. We also illustrate results on baryon wave-functions and diquark correlations within baryons in the Coulomb and Landau gauge.
The $γ^{(\ast)}+p \to N(1535) \tfrac{1}{2}^-$ transition is studied using a symmetry-preserving regularisation of a vector$\,\otimes\,$vector contact interaction (SCI). The framework employs a Poincaré-covariant Faddeev equation to describe the initial and final state baryons as quark+di\-quark composites, wherein the diquark correlations are fully dynamical, interacting with the photon as allowed by their quantum numbers and continually engaging in breakup and recombination as required by the Faddeev kernel. The presence of such correlations owes largely to the mechanisms responsible for the …
The phenomenon of diquark condensation at non-zero baryon density and zero temperature is analyzed in the strong coupling limit of lattice QCD. The results indicate that there is attraction in the quark-quark channel also at strong coupling, and that the attraction is more effective at high baryon density, but for infinite coupling it is not enough to produce diquark condensation. It is argued that the absence of diquark condensation is not a peculiarity of the strong coupling limit, but persists at sufficiently large finite couplings.
A gauge invariant method for the investigation of scalar diquark clustering in the nucleon ground state is presented. The method focuses on a comparison of quark distributions in the nucleon with those in the $Δ$ baryon resonance. Recent lattice QCD calculations of these quark distribution radii are analyzed in a search for evidence of scalar diquark clustering. The analysis indicates the lattice results describe the negative squared charge radius of the neutron with little resort to hyperfine clustering between $u$-$d$-quark pairs. This result contrasts both quark-diquark and nonrelativistic …
Diquarks may play an important role in hadron spectroscopy, baryon decays and color superconductivity. We investigate the existence of diquark correlations in lattice QCD by considering systematically all the lowest energy diquark channels in a color gauge-invariant setup. We measure mass differences between the various channels and show that the positive parity scalar diquark is the lightest. Quark-quark correlations inside the diquark are clearly seen in this channel, and yield a diquark size of order 1 fm.

The possibility of diquark condensation at sufficiently large baryon chemical potential and zero temperature is analyzed in QCD at strong coupling. In agreement with other strong coupling analysis, it is found that a first order phase transition separates a low density phase with chiral symmetry spontaneously broken from a high density phase where chiral symmetry is restored. In none of the phases diquark condensation takes place as an equilibrium state, but, for any value of the chemical potential, there is a metastable state characterized by a non-vanishing diquark condensate. The energy dif…
Results are presented of a Monte Carlo simulation of a 2+1 dimensional Gross-Neveu model with SU(2)xSU(2) chiral symmetry at non-zero baryon chemical potential, corresponding to non-zero baryon density. The phenomenon of quark pair condensation is sought via measurement of a two point function. For sufficiently large chemical potential there is a sharp transition between a phase where the chiral symmetry is broken by a standard chiral condensate and one where a scalar diquark condensate, qq, is non-zero. Global U(1) baryon number symmetry may remain unbroken, however, due to the absence of lon…
Octet baryon axial, induced pseudoscalar, and pseudoscalar form factors are computed using a symmetry-preserving treatment of a vector$\,\times\,$vector contact interaction (SCI), thereby unifying them with an array of other baryon properties and analogous treatments of semileptonic decays of pseudoscalar mesons. The baryons are treated as quark--plus--interacting-diquark bound states, whose structure is obtained by solving a Poincaré-covariant Faddeev equation. The approach is marked by algebraic simplicity, involves no free parameters, and since it is symmetry preserving, all consequences of…
It has been argued recently that diquarks, a pair of quarks in the anti-triplet representation of SU(3) color, are important building blocks of baryons. The assumption that the scalar diquark is tightly bound seems to be nicely accommodated by experimental data. In this paper I attempt to extract phenomenological properties of diquarks from lattice QCD calculations. In particular, I use the MILC 2+1 dynamical fermion lattices with domain wall fermion valence quarks to probe diquarks very close to the chiral limit.
We assume that the most important quark correlations are pairwise at all baryon densities. We introduce correlated pairs by means of Bogoliubov transformations which are functions of time and spatial gauge fields, in the formalism of the transfer matrix with lattice regularization. The dependence on time and gauge fields allows us to enforce gauge invariance and other symmetries term by term in the transformed quantities. The resulting action should be suitable for the description of multiquark mesons and baryons as states of a quark and a diquark. We derive the quark contribution to the free …
