We describe Morita equivalence of unital locally matrix algebras in terms of their Steinitz parametrization. Two countable dimensional unital locally matrix algebras are Morita equivalent if and only if their Steinitz numbers are rationally connected. For an arbitrary uncountable dimension $α$ and an arbitrary not locally finite Steinitz number $s$ there exist unital locally matrix algebras $A$, $B$ such that $\dim_{F}A=\dim_{F}B=α$, $\mathbf{st}(A)=\mathbf{st}(B)=s$, however, the algebras $A$, $B$ are not Morita equivalent.
We gather some classical results and examples that show strict inclusion between the families of unital rings, rings with enough idempotents, rings with sets of local units, locally unital rings, s-unital rings and idempotent rings.
Let G and K be groupoids. We present the notion of a (G_α,K_β)-set and we prove a duality theorem in this context, which extends the duality theorem for graded algebras by groups. For A a unital G-graded algebra and X a finite split G-set, we show that there is an isomorphism between the category of the left A-modules X-graded and the category of the left A \#_α^{G}X-modules. As an application of this isomorphism, we construct a Morita context.
In this paper we prove that two idempotent rings are Morita equivalent if every corner of one of them is isomorphic to a corner of a matrix ring of the other one. We establish the converse (which is not true in general) for $σ$-unital rings having a $σ$-unit consisting of von Neumann regular elements. The following aim is to show that a property is Morita invariant if it is invariant under taking corners and under taking matrices. The previous results are used to check the Morita invariance of certain ring properties (being locally left/right artinian/noetherian, being categorically left/right…
We construct a unital locally matrix algebra of uncountable dimension that (1) does not admit a primary decomposition, (2) has an infinite locally finite Steinitz number. It gives negative answers to questions from \cite{BezOl} and \cite{Kurochkin}. We also show that for an arbitrary infinite Steinitz number $s$ there exists a unital locally matrix algebra $A$ having the Steinitz number $s$ and not isomorphic to a tensor product of finite dimensional matrix algebras.
An $F$-algebra $A$ with unit $1$ is said to be a locally matrix algebra if an arbitrary finite collection of elements $a_1,$ $\ldots,$ $a_s $ from $ A$ lies in a subalgebra $B$ with $1$ of the algebra $A$, that is isomorphic to a matrix algebra $M_n(F),$ $n\geq 1.$ To an arbitrary unital locally matrix algebra $A$ we assign a Steinitz number $\mathbf{n}(A)$ and study a relationship between $\mathbf{n}(A)$ and $A$.
Let $G$ and $H$ be Hausdorff ample groupoids and let $R$ be a commutative unital ring. We show that if $G$ and $H$ are equivalent in the sense of Muhly-Renault-Williams, then the associated Steinberg algebras of locally constant $R$-valued functions with compact support are Morita equivalent. We deduce that collapsing a ``collapsible subgraph" of a directed graph in the sense of Crisp and Gow does not change the Morita-equivalence class of the associated Leavitt path $R$-algebra, and therefore a number of graphical constructions which yield Morita equivalent $C^*$-algebras also yield Morita eq…
We develop a general framework for the study of strong Morita equivalence in which $C^*$-algebras and hermitian star products on Poisson manifolds are treated in equal footing. We compare strong and ring-theoretic Morita equivalences in terms of their Picard groupoids for a certain class of unital $^*$-algebras encompassing both examples. Within this class, we show that both notions of Morita equivalence induce the same equivalence relation but generally define different Picard groups. For star products, this difference is expressed geometrically in cohomological terms.
We prove that two semigroups with local units are Morita equivalent if and only if they have a joint enlargement. This approach to Morita theory provides a natural framework for understanding McAlister's theory of the local structure of regular semigroups. In particular, we prove that a semigroup with local units is Morita equivalent to an inverse semigroup precisely when it is a regular locally inverse semigroup.
We show that $E$ is a finite graph with no sinks if and only if the Leavitt path algebra $L_R(E)$ is isomorphic to an algebraic Cuntz-Krieger algebra if and only if the $C^*$-algebra $C^*(E)$ is unital and $rank(K_0(C^*(E)))=rank(K_1(C^*(E)))$. When $k$ is a field and $rank(k^{\times})< \infty$, we show that the Leavitt path algebra $L_k(E)$ is isomorphic to an algebraic Cuntz-Krieger algebra if and only if $L_k(E)$ is unital and $rank(K_1(L_k(E)))=(rank(k^{\times})+1)rank(K_0(L_k(E)))$. We also show that any unital $k$-algebra which is Morita equivalent or stably isomorphic to an algebraic Cu…
Recently it was shown that the notion of flow equivalence of shifts of finite type in symbolic dynamics is related to the Morita theory and the Grothendieck group in the theory of Leavitt path algebras \cite{flowa}. In this paper we show that the notion of conjugacy of shifts of finite type is closely related to the {\it graded} Morita theory and consequently the {\it graded} Grothendieck group. This fits into the general framework we have in these two theories: Conjugacy yields the flow equivalence and the graded Morita equivalence can be lifted to the Morita equivalence. Starting from a fini…
A coaction of a Hopf algebra on a unital algebra is called homogeneous if the algebra of coinvariants equals the ground field. A coaction of a Hopf algebra on a (not necessarily unital) algebra is called Galois, or principal, or free, if the canonical map, also known as the Galois map, is bijective. In this paper, we establish a duality between a particular class of homogeneous coactions, up to equivariant Morita equivalence, and Galois coactions, up to isomorphism.
The Kumjian-Pask algebra of a higher-rank graph generalises the Leavitt path algebra of a directed graph. We extend the definition of Kumjian-Pask algebra to row-finite higher-rank graphs $Λ$ with sources which satisfy a local-convexity condition. After proving versions of the graded-uniqueness theorem and the Cuntz-Krieger uniqueness theorem, we study the Kumjian-Pask algebra of rank-2 Bratteli diagrams by studying certain finite subgraphs which are locally convex. We show that the desourcification procedure of Farthing and Webster yields a row-finite higher-rank graph $\tildeΛ$ without sourc…
We present a result of P. Ara which establishes that the Unbounded Generating Number property is a Morita invariant for unital rings. Using this, we give necessary and sufficient conditions on a graph $E$ so that the Leavitt path algebra associated to $E$ has UGN. We conclude by identifying the graphs for which the Leavitt path algebra is (equivalently) directly finite; stably finite; Hermite; and has cancellation of projectives.
We prove that if E and F are graphs with a finite number of vertices and an infinite number of edges, if K is a field, and if L_K(E) and L_K(F) are simple Leavitt path algebras, then L_K(E) is Morita equivalent to L_K(F) if and only if K_0^\textnormal{alg} (L_K(E)) \cong K_0^\textnormal{alg} (L_K(F)) and the graphs $E$ and $F$ have the same number of singular vertices, and moreover, in this case one may transform the graph E into the graph F using basic moves that preserve the Morita equivalence class of the associated Leavitt path algebra. We also show that when K is a field with no free quot…
We describe spectra of associative (not necessarily unital and not necessarily countable-dimensional) locally matrix algebras. We determine all possible spectra of locally matrix algebras and give a new proof of Dixmier-Baranov Theorem. As an application of our description of spectra we determine embeddings of locally matrix algebras.
We introduce a notion of ideal-related K-theory for rings, and use it to prove that if two complex Leavitt path algebras are Morita equivalent (respectively, isomorphic), then the ideal-related K-theories (respectively, the unital ideal-related K-theories) of the corresponding graph C*-algebras are isomorphic. This has consequences for the "Morita equivalence conjecture" and "isomorphism conjecture" for graph algebras, and allows us to prove that when E and F belong to specific collections of graphs whose C*-algebras are classified by ideal-related K-theory, Morita equivalence (respectively, i…
Let $A$ be a unital locally matrix algebra over a field $\mathbb{F}$ of characteristic different from $2.$ We find necessary and sufficient condition for the Lie algebra $A\diagup\mathbb{F}\cdot 1$ to be simple and for the Lie algebra of derivations $\text{Der}(A)$ to be topologically simple. The condition depends on the Steinitz number of $A$ only.
The author has previously associated to each commutative ring with unit $\Bbbk$ and étale groupoid $\mathscr G$ with locally compact, Hausdorff, totally disconnected unit space a $\Bbbk$-algebra $\Bbbk\mathscr G$. The algebra $\Bbbk\mathscr G$ need not be unital, but it always has local units. The class of groupoid algebras includes group algebras, inverse semigroup algebras and Leavitt path algebras. In this paper we show that the category of unitary $\Bbbk\mathscr G$-modules is equivalent to the category of sheaves of $\Bbbk$-modules over $\mathscr G$. As a consequence we obtain a new proof …
Let $k$ be a field and let $R$ be a left noetherian $k$-algebra. The algebra $R$ satisfies the Dixmier-Moeglin equivalence if the annihilators of irreducible representations are precisely those prime ideals that are locally closed in the ${\rm Spec}(R)$ and if, moreover, these prime ideals are precisely those whose extended centres are algebraic extensions of the base field. We show that if $R$ and $S$ are two left noetherian $k$-algebras with ${\rm dim}_k(R), {\rm dim}_k(S)<|k|$ then if $R$ and $S$ have homeomorphic spectra then $R$ satisfies the Dixmier-Moeglin equivalence if and only if $S$…
A weakly equivariant Hopf algebra is a Hopf algebra A with an action of a finite group G up to inner automorphisms. We show that each weakly equivariant Hopf algebra can be replaced by a Morita equivalent algebra B with a strict action of G and with a coalgebra structure that leads to a tensor equivalent representation category. However, the coproduct of this strictification cannot, in general, be chosen to be unital, so that a strictification of the G-action can only be found on a weak Hopf algebra B.
The paper begins with short proofs of classical theorems by Frobenius and (resp.) Zorn on associative and (resp.) alternative real division algebras. These theorems characterize the first three (resp. four) Cayley-Dickson algebras. Then we introduce and study the class of real unital nonassociative algebras in which the subalgebra generated by any nonscalar element is isomorphic to C. We call them locally complex algebras. In particular, we describe all such algebras that have dimension at most 4. Our main motivation, however, for introducing locally complex algebras is that this concept makes…
We obtain a complete structural characterization of Cohn-Leavitt algebras over no-exit objects as graded involutive algebras. Corollaries of this result include graph-theoretic conditions characterizing when a Leavitt path algebra is a directed union of (graded) matricial algebras over the underlying field and over the algebra of Laurent polynomials and when the monoid of isomorphism classes of finitely generated projective modules is atomic and cancellative. We introduce the non-unital generalizations of graded analogues of noetherian and artinian rings, graded locally noetherian and graded l…
Let A be a finite dimensional algebra over an algebraically closed field K. The derived Picard group DPic(A) is the group of two-sided tilting complexes over A modulo isomorphism. We prove that DPic(A) is a locally algebraic group, and its identity component is Out^0(A). If B is a derived Morita equivalent algebra then DPic(A) is isomorphic to DPic(B) as locally algebraic groups. Our results extend, and our based on, work of Huisgen-Zimmermann, Saorin and Rouquier.
We show that the long exact sequence for K-groups of Leavitt path algebras deduced by Ara, Brustenga, and Cortinas extends to Leavitt path algebras of countable graphs with infinite emitters in the obvious way. Using this long exact sequence, we compute explicit formulas for the higher algebraic K-groups of Leavitt path algebras over certain fields, including all finite fields and all algebraically closed fields. We also examine classification of Leavitt path algebras using K-theory. It is known that the K_0-group and K_1-group do not suffice to classify purely infinite simple unital Leavitt p…
In this article we analyze the notions of amenability and paradoxical decomposition from an algebraic perspective. We consider this dichotomy for locally finite extended metric spaces and for general algebras over commutative fields. In the context of algebras we also study the relation of amenability with proper infiniteness. We apply our general analysis to two important classes of algebras: the unital Leavitt path algebras and the translation algebras on locally finite extended metric spaces. In particular, we show that the amenability of a metric space is equivalent to the algebraic amenab…
