In this paper we deal with infinite-dimensional nonlinear forward complete dynamical systems which are subject to external disturbances. We first extend the well-known Datko lemma to the framework of the considered class of systems. Thanks to this generalization, we provide characterizations of the uniform (with respect to disturbances) local, semi-global, and global exponential stability, through the existence of coercive and non-coercive Lyapunov functionals. The importance of the obtained results is underlined through some applications concerning 1) exponential stability of nonlinear retarded systems with piecewise constant delays, 2) exponential stability preservation under sampling for semilinear control switching systems, and 3) the link between input-to-state stability and exponential stability of semilinear switching systems.
In this technical note, we consider the stability properties of a viscously damped Timoshenko beam equation with spatially varying parameters. With the help of the port-Hamiltonian framework, we first prove the existence of solutions and show, by an appropriate Lyapunov function, that the system is exponentially stable and has an explicit decay rate. The explicit exponential bound is computed for an illustrative example of which we provide some numerical simulations.
We explicitly construct global strict Lyapunov functions for rapidly time-varying nonlinear control systems. The Lyapunov functions we construct are expressed in terms of oftentimes more readily available Lyapunov functions for the limiting dynamics which we assume are uniformly globally asymptotically stable. This leads to new sufficient conditions for uniform global exponential, uniform global asymptotic, and input-to-state stability of fast time-varying dynamics. We also construct strict Lyapunov functions for our systems using a strictification approach. We illustrate our results using a f…
This paper presents a proof that existence of a polynomial Lyapunov function is necessary and sufficient for exponential stability of sufficiently smooth nonlinear ordinary differential equations on bounded sets. The main result states that if there exists an n-times continuously differentiable Lyapunov function which proves exponential stability on a bounded subset of R^n, then there exists a polynomial Lyapunov function which proves exponential stability on the same region. Such a continuous Lyapunov function will exist if, for example, the right-hand side of the differential equation is pol…
The objective of this paper is to study detectability, observability and related Lyapunov-type theorems of linear discrete-time time-varying stochastic systems with multiplicative noise. Some new concepts such as uniform detectability, ${\cal K}^{\infty}$-exact detectability (resp. ${\cal K}^{WFT}$-exact detectability, ${\cal K}^{FT}$-exact detectability, ${\cal K}^{N}$-exact detectability) and ${\cal K}^{\infty}$-exact observability (resp. ${\cal K}^{WFT}$-exact observability, ${\cal K}^{FT}$-exact observability, ${\cal K}^{N}$-exact observability) are introduced, respectively, and nice prope…
This paper presents a small-gain theorem for networks composed of a countably infinite number of finite-dimensional subsystems. Assuming that each subsystem is exponentially input-to-state stable, we show that if the gain operator, collecting all the information about the internal Lyapunov gains, has a spectral radius less than one, the overall infinite network is exponentially input-to-state stable. The effectiveness of our result is illustrated through several examples including nonlinear spatially invariant systems with sector nonlinearities and a road traffic network.
In this paper, we consider linear switched systems $\dot x(t)=A_{u(t)} x(t)$, $x\in\R^n$, $u\in U$, and the problem of asymptotic stability for arbitrary switching functions, uniform with respect to switching ({\bf UAS} for short). We first prove that, given a {\bf UAS} system, it is always possible to build a common polynomial Lyapunov function. Then our main result is that the degree of that common polynomial Lyapunov function is not uniformly bounded over all the {\bf UAS} systems. This result answers a question raised by Dayawansa and Martin. A generalization to a class of piecewise-polyno…
Lyapunov-like characterizations for non-uniform in time and uniform robust global asymptotic stability of uncertain systems described by retarded functional differential equations are provided.
In this paper we study the notion of estimation entropy recently established by Liberzon and Mitra. This quantity measures the smallest rate of information about the state of a dynamical system above which an exponential state estimation with a given exponent is possible. We show that this concept is closely related to the $α$-entropy introduced by Thieullen and we give a lower estimate in terms of Lyapunov exponents assuming that the system preserves an absolutely continuous measure with a bounded density, which includes in particular Hamiltonian and symplectic systems. Although in its curren…
A boundary feedback stabilisation problem of non-uniform linear hyperbolic systems of balance laws with additive disturbance is discussed. A continuous and a corresponding discrete Lyapunov function is defined. Using an input-to-state-stability (ISS) $ L^2- $Lyapunov function, the decay of solutions of linear systems of balance laws is proved. In the discrete framework, a first-order finite volume scheme is employed. In such cases, the decay rates can be explicitly derived. The main objective is to prove the Lyapunov stability for the $L^2$-norm for linear hyperbolic systems of balance laws wi…
In this paper, a class of abstract dynamical systems is considered which encompasses a wide range of nonlinear finite- and infinite-dimensional systems. We show that the existence of a non-coercive Lyapunov function without any further requirements on the flow of the forward complete system ensures an integral version of uniform global asymptotic stability. We prove that also the converse statement holds without any further requirements on regularity of the system. Furthermore, we give a characterization of uniform global asymptotic stability in terms of the integral stability properties and a…
This article deals with the stability analysis of a drilling system which is modelled as a coupled ordinary differential equation / string equation. The string is damped at the two boundaries but leading to a stable open-loop system. The aim is to derive a linear matrix inequality ensuring the exponential stability with a guaranteed decay-rate of this interconnected system. A strictly proper dynamic controller based on boundary measurements is proposed to accelerate the system dynamics and its effects are investigated through the stability theorem and simulations. It results in an efficient fi…
For a class of nonsmooth composite optimization problems with linear equality constraints, we utilize a Lyapunov-based approach to establish the global exponential stability of the primal-dual gradient flow dynamics based on the proximal augmented Lagrangian. The result holds when the differentiable part of the objective function is strongly convex with a Lipschitz continuous gradient; the non-differentiable part is proper, lower semi-continuous, and convex; and the matrix in the linear constraint is full row rank. Our quadratic Lyapunov function generalizes recent result from strongly convex …
This paper is devoted to the stabilization problem for nonlinear driftless control systems by means of a time-varying feedback control. It is assumed that the vector fields of the system together with their first order Lie brackets span the whole tangent space at the equilibrium. A family of trigonometric open-loop controls is constructed to approximate the gradient flow associated with a Lyapunov function. These controls are applied for the derivation of a time-varying feedback law under the sampling strategy. By using Lyapunov's direct method, we prove that the controller proposed ensures ex…
In this paper, we show that an infinite network of input-to-state stable (ISS) subsystems, admitting ISS Lyapunov functions, itself admits an ISS Lyapunov function, provided that the couplings between the subsystems are sufficiently weak. The strength of the couplings is described in terms of the properties of an infinite-dimensional nonlinear positive operator, built from the interconnection gains. If this operator induces a uniformly globally asymptotically stable (UGAS) system, a Lyapunov function for the infinite network can be constructed. We analyze necessary and sufficient conditions fo…
In this paper we show that the existence of a Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional is necessary and sufficient condition for the uniform global asymptotic stability and the global exponential stability of time-invariant systems described by neutral functional differential equations in Hale's form. It is assumed that the difference operator is linear and strongly stable, and that the map in the right-hand side of the equation is Lipschitz on bounded sets. A link between global exponential stability and input-to-state stability is also provided. @ The extended version of this paper has been submitted …
We address the question of the exponential stability for the $C^{1}$ norm of general 1-D quasilinear systems with source terms under boundary conditions. To reach this aim, we introduce the notion of basic $C^{1}$ Lyapunov functions, a generic kind of exponentially decreasing function whose existence ensures the exponential stability of the system for the $C^{1}$ norm. We show that the existence of a basic $C^{1}$ Lyapunov function is subject to two conditions: an interior condition, intrinsic to the system, and a condition on the boundary controls. We give explicit sufficient interior and bou…
Asymptotic output stability (AOS) is an interesting property when addressing control applications in which not all state variables are requested to converge to the origin. AOS is often established by invoking classical tools such as Barbashin-Krasovskii-LaSalle's invariance principle or Barbalat's lemma. Nevertheless, none of these tools allow to predict whether the output convergence is uniform on bounded sets of initial conditions, which may lead to practical issues related to convergence speed and robustness. The contribution of this paper is twofold. First, we provide a testable sufficient…
A systematic approach to maximise estimates on the region of attraction in the exponential stabilisation of geometrically exact (nonlinear) beam models via boundary feedback is presented. Starting from recently established stability results based on Lyapunov arguments, the main contribution of the presented work is to maximise the analytically found bounds on the initial datum, for which local exponential stability is guaranteed, via search of (optimal) polynomial Lyapunov functionals using an iterative semi-definite programming approach.
For systems evolving on a Riemannian manifold, we propose converse Lyapunov theorems for asymptotic and exponential stability. The novelty of the proposed approach is that is does not rely on local Euclidean coordinate, and is thus valid on a wider domain than the immediate vicinity of the considered equilibrium. We also show how the constructions can be useful for robustness analysis.
We show that the existence of a non-coercive Lyapunov function is sufficient for uniform global asymptotic stability (UGAS) of infinite-dimensional systems with external disturbances provided the speed of decay is measured in terms of the norm of the state and an additional mild assumption is satisfied. For evolution equations in Banach spaces with Lipschitz continuous nonlinearities these additional assumptions become especially simple. The results encompass some recent results on linear switched systems on Banach spaces. Finally, we derive new non-coercive converse Lyapunov theorems and give…
This paper considers the problem of approximating the "maximal" region of attraction (the set that contains all asymptotically stable sets) of any given set of locally exponentially stable nonlinear Ordinary Differential Equations (ODEs) with a sufficiently smooth vector field. Given a locally exponential stable ODE with a differentiable vector field, we show that there exists a globally Lipschitz continuous converse Lyapunov function whose 1-sublevel set is equal to the maximal region of attraction of the ODE. We then propose a sequence of d-degree Sum-of-Squares (SOS) programming problems th…
In this note we show that if a continuous-time, nonlinear, time-invariant, finite-dimensional system evolves on a compact subset of Rn and if the Jacobian of the vector field is Hurwitz at each point of the compact set, then there is a unique equilibrium on the set and solutions exponentially converge to it. This shows that the Markus-Yamabe conjecture, which is false in general on Rn, n>2, holds on compact sets. The results of this note can be viewed as an application of Krasovskii's method for constructing Lyapunov functions and we are able to similarly construct Lyapunov-like functions vali…
