A boundary feedback stabilisation problem of non-uniform linear hyperbolic systems of balance laws with additive disturbance is discussed. A continuous and a corresponding discrete Lyapunov function is defined. Using an input-to-state-stability (ISS) $ L^2- $Lyapunov function, the decay of solutions of linear systems of balance laws is proved. In the discrete framework, a first-order finite volume scheme is employed. In such cases, the decay rates can be explicitly derived. The main objective is to prove the Lyapunov stability for the $L^2$-norm for linear hyperbolic systems of balance laws with additive disturbance both analytically and numerically. Theoretical results are demonstrated by using numerical computations.
In this paper, a linear hyperbolic system of balance laws with boundary disturbances in one dimension is considered. An explicit candidate Input-to-State Stability (ISS)-Lyapunov function in $ L^2- $norm is considered and discretised to investigate conditions for ISS of the discrete system as well. Finally, experimental results on test examples including the Saint-Venant equations with boundary disturbances are presented. The numerical results demonstrate the expected theoretical decay of the Lyapunov function.
In this paper we propose a data-driven distributionally robust Model Predictive Control framework for constrained stochastic systems with unbounded additive disturbances. Recursive feasibility is ensured by optimizing over an linearly interpolated initial state constraint in combination with a simplified affine disturbance feedback policy. We consider a moment-based ambiguity set with data-driven radius for the second moment of the disturbance, where we derive a minimum number of samples in order to ensure user-given confidence bounds on the chance constraints and closed-loop performance. This paper studies integral-type event-triggered model predictive control (MPC) of continuous-time nonlinear systems. An integral-type event-triggered mechanism is proposed by incorporating the integral of errors between the actual and predicted state sequences, leading to reduced average sampling frequency. Besides, a new and improved robustness constraint is introduced to handle the additive disturbance, rendering the MPC problem with a potentially enlarged initial feasible region. Furthermore, the feasibility of the designed MPC and the stability of the closed-loop system are rigorously inv…
In this paper, we consider issues relative to prescribed time stabilisation of a chain of integrators of arbitrary length, either pure (i.e., where there is no disturbance) or perturbed. In a first part, we revisit the proportional navigation feedback (PNF) approach and we show that it can be appropriately recasted within the framework of time-varying homogeneity. As a first consequence, we first recover all previously obtained results on PNF with simpler arguments. We then apply sliding mode inspired feedbacks to achieve prescribed stabilisation with uniformly bounded gains. However, all thes…
This paper presents new results on robust positively invariant (RPI) sets for linear discrete-time systems with additive disturbances. In particular, we study how RPI sets change with scaling of the disturbance set. More precisely, we show that many properties of RPI sets crucially depend on a unique scaling factor which determines the transition from nonempty to empty RPI sets. We characterize this critical scaling factor, present an efficient algorithm for its computation, and analyze it for a number of examples from the literature.
This paper is concerned with the leader-following consensus problem for a class of Lipschitz nonlinear multi-agent systems with uncertain dynamics, where each agent only transmits its noisy output, at discrete instants and independently from its neighbors. The proposed consensus protocol is based on a continuous-discrete time observer, which provides a continuous time estimation of the state of the neighbors from their discrete-time output measurements, together with a continuous control law. The stability of the multi-agent system is analyzed with a Lyapunov approach and the exponential pract…
This note describes a reference governor design for a continuous-time nonlinear system with an additive disturbance. The design is based on predicting the response of the nonlinear system by the response of a linear model with a set-bounded prediction error, where a state-and-input dependent bound on the prediction error is explicitly characterized using logarithmic norms. The online optimization is reduced to a convex quadratic program with linear inequality constraints. Two numerical examples are reported.
An optimal control problem with an infinite horizon quadratic cost functional for a linear system with a known additive disturbance is considered. The feature of this problem is that a weight matrix of the control cost in the cost functional is singular. Due to this singularity, the problem can be solved neither by application of the Pontriagin's Maximum Principle, nor using the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation approach, i.e. this problem is singular. Since the weight matrix of the control cost, being singular, is not in general zero, only a part of the control coordinates is singular, while t…
The paper considers constrained linear systems with stochastic additive disturbances and noisy measurements transmitted over a lossy communication channel. We propose a model predictive control (MPC) law that minimizes a discounted cost subject to a discounted expectation constraint. Sensor data is assumed to be lost with known probability, and data losses are accounted for by expressing the predicted control policy as an affine function of future observations, which results in a convex optimal control problem. An online constraint-tightening technique ensures recursive feasibility of the onli…
We introduce a monotonicity-based method for studying input-to-state stability (ISS) of nonlinear parabolic equations with boundary inputs. We first show that a monotone control system is ISS if and only if it is ISS w.r.t. constant inputs. Then we show by means of classical maximum principles that nonlinear parabolic equations with boundary disturbances are monotone control systems. With these two facts, we establish that ISS of the original nonlinear parabolic PDE with constant \textit{boundary disturbances} is equivalent to ISS of a closely related nonlinear parabolic PDE with constant \tex…
This paper addresses the design of finite-dimensional feedback control laws for linear discrete-time fractional-order systems with additive state disturbance. A set of sufficient conditions are provided to guarantee convergence of the state trajectories to an ultimate bound around the origin with size increasing with the magnitude of the disturbances. Performing a suitable change of coordinates, the latter result can be used to design a controller that is able to track reference trajectories that are solutions of the unperturbed fractional-order system. To overcome the challenges associated wi…
Linear models with additive unknown-but-bounded input disturbances are extensively used to model uncertainty in robust control systems design. Typically, the disturbance set is either assumed to be known a priori or estimated from data through set-membership identification. However, the problem of computing a suitable input disturbance set in case the set of possible output values is assigned a priori has received relatively little attention. This problem arises in many contexts, such as in supervisory control, actuator design, decentralized control, and others. In this paper, we propose a met…
We propose an open loop methodology based on sample statistics to solve chance constrained stochastic optimal control problems with probabilistic safety guarantees for linear systems where the additive Gaussian noise has unknown mean and covariance. We consider a joint chance constraint for time-varying polytopic target sets under assumptions that the disturbance has been sufficiently sampled. We derive two theorems that allow us to bound the probability of the state being more than some number of sample standard deviations away from the sample mean. We use these theorems to reformulate the ch…
This paper studies control synthesis for a general class of nonlinear, control-affine dynamical systems under additive disturbances and state-estimation errors. We enforce forward invariance of static and dynamic safe sets and convergence to a given goal set within a user-defined time in the presence of input constraints. We use robust variants of control barrier functions (CBF) and fixed-time control Lyapunov functions (FxT-CLF) to incorporate a class of additive disturbances in the system dynamics, and state-estimation errors. To solve the underlying constrained control problem, we formulate…
This paper presents a computationally efficient robust model predictive control law for discrete linear time invariant systems subject to additive disturbances that may depend on the state and/or input norms. Despite the dependency being non-convex, we are able to capture it exactly for input dependency and approximately for state dependency in at most a second order cone programming problem. The formulation has linear complexity in the planning horizon length. The approach is thus amenable to efficient real-time implementation with a guarantee on recursive feasibility and global optimality. R…
This paper studies the robustness of policy iteration in the context of continuous-time infinite-horizon linear quadratic regulation (LQR) problem. It is shown that Kleinman's policy iteration algorithm is inherently robust to small disturbances and enjoys local input-to-state stability in the sense of Sontag. More precisely, whenever the disturbance-induced input term in each iteration is bounded and small, the solutions of the policy iteration algorithm are also bounded and enter a small neighborhood of the optimal solution of the LQR problem. Based on this result, an off-policy data-driven …
A robust model predictive control (MPC) method is presented for linear, time-invariant systems affected by bounded additive disturbances. The main contribution is the offline design of a disturbance-affine feedback gain whereby the resulting constraint tightening is minimized. This is achieved by formulating the constraint tightening problem as a convex optimization problem with the feedback term as a variable. The resulting MPC controller has the computational complexity of nominal MPC, and guarantees recursive feasibility, stability and constraint satisfaction. The advantages of the proposed…
This paper deals with the exponential input-to-state stabilization with respect to boundary disturbances of a class of diagonal infinite-dimensional systems via delay boundary control. The considered input delays are uncertain and time-varying. The proposed control strategy consists of a constant-delay predictor feedback controller designed on a truncated finite-dimensional model capturing the unstable modes of the original infinite-dimensional system. We show that the resulting closed-loop system is exponentially input-to-state stable with fading memory of both additive boundary input perturb…

This paper investigates the problem of designing data-driven stochastic Model Predictive Control (MPC) for linear time-invariant systems under additive stochastic disturbance, whose probability distribution is unknown but can be partially inferred from data. We propose a novel online learning based risk-averse stochastic MPC framework in which Conditional Value-at-Risk (CVaR) constraints on system states are required to hold for a family of distributions called an ambiguity set. The ambiguity set is constructed from disturbance data by leveraging a Dirichlet process mixture model that is self-…
This paper designs a model predictive control (MPC) law for constrained linear systems with stochastic additive disturbances and noisy measurements, minimising a discounted cost subject to a discounted expectation constraint. It is assumed that sensor data is lost with a known probability. Taking into account the data losses modelled by a Bernoulli process, we parameterise the predicted control policy as an affine function of future observations and obtain a convex linear-quadratic optimal control problem. Constraint satisfaction and a discounted cost bound are ensured without imposing bounds …
We propose a certainty-equivalence scheme for adaptive control of scalar linear systems subject to additive, i.i.d. Gaussian disturbances and bounded control input constraints, without requiring prior knowledge of the bounds of the system parameters, nor the control direction. Assuming that the system is at-worst marginally stable, mean square boundedness of the closed-loop system states is proven. Lastly, numerical examples are presented to illustrate our results.
We consider stochastic optimal control of linear dynamical systems with additive non-Gaussian disturbance. We propose a novel, sampling-free approach, based on Fourier transformations and convex optimization, to cast the stochastic optimal control problem as a difference-of-convex program. In contrast to existing moment based approaches, our approach invokes higher moments, resulting in less conservatism. We employ piecewise affine approximations and the well-known convex-concave procedure, to efficiently solve the resulting optimization problem via standard conic solvers. We demonstrate that …
