In this paper, we consider issues relative to prescribed time stabilisation of a chain of integrators of arbitrary length, either pure (i.e., where there is no disturbance) or perturbed. In a first part, we revisit the proportional navigation feedback (PNF) approach and we show that it can be appropriately recasted within the framework of time-varying homogeneity. As a first consequence, we first recover all previously obtained results on PNF with simpler arguments. We then apply sliding mode inspired feedbacks to achieve prescribed stabilisation with uniformly bounded gains. However, all these feedbacks are robust to matched uncertainties only. In a second part, we provide a feedback law yet inspired by sliding mode which not only stabilises the pure chain of integrators in prescribed time but also exhibits some robustness in the presence of measurement noise and unmatched uncertainties.
In this paper, we present Lyapunov-based robust and adaptive controllers for the finite time stabilization of a perturbed chain of integrators with bounded uncertainties. The proposed controllers can be designed for integrator chains of any arbitrary length. The uncertainty bounds are known in the robust control problem whereas they are unknown in the adaptive control problem. Both controllers are developed from a class of finite time stabilization controllers for pure integrator chains. Lyapunov-based design permits to calculate upper bound on convergence time.
In this paper, we present a Lyapunov-based homogeneous controller for the stabilization of a perturbed chain of integrators of arbitrary order $r\geq 1$. The proposed controller is based on homogeneous controller for stabilization of pure integrator chains. The advantages to control the homogeneity degree of the controller are also discussed. A bounded-controller with minimum amplitude of discontinuous control and a controller with fixed-time convergence are synthesized, using control of homogeneity degree, and their performances are shown in simulations. It is demonstrated that the homogeneou…
In this paper, we present Lyapunov-based adaptive controllers for the practical (or real) stabilization of a perturbed chain of integrators with bounded uncertainties. We refer to such controllers as Adaptive Higher Order Sliding Mode (AHOSM) controllers since they are designed for nonlinear SISO systems with bounded uncertainties such that the uncertainty bounds are unknown. Our main result states that, given any neighborhood N of the origin, we determine a controller insuring, for every uncertainty bounds, that every trajectory of the corresponding closed loop system enters N and eventually …
Consider the controlled system $dx/dt = Ax + α(t)Bu$ where the pair $(A,B)$ is stabilizable and $α(t)$ takes values in $[0,1]$ and is persistently exciting, i.e., there exist two positive constants $μ,T$ such that, for every $t\geq 0$, $\int_t^{t+T}α(s)ds\geq μ$. In particular, when $α(t)$ becomes zero the system dynamics switches to an uncontrollable system. In this paper, we address the following question: is it possible to find a linear time-invariant state-feedback $u=Kx$, with $K$ only depending on $(A,B)$ and possibly on $μ,T$, which globally asymptotically stabilizes the system? We give…
A nonsmooth extension of the speed-gradient algorithms in finite form is proposed. The conditions ensuring control goal (convergence of the goal function to zero) are established. A new algorithm is applied to almost global stabilization of the Brockett integrator that has become a popular benchmark for nonsmooth and discontinuous algorithms. It is proved that the designed control law stabilizes the Brockett integrator for any initial point that does not lie on the x3-axis. Besides, it is shown that the speed-gradient algorithm ensures stabilization with an arbitrarily small control level. An …
Numerical methods that preserve geometric invariants of the system, such as energy, momentum or the symplectic form, are called geometric integrators. Variational integrators are an important class of geometric integrators. The general idea for those variational integrators is to discretize Hamilton's principle rather than the equations of motion in a way that preserves some of the invariants of the original system. In this paper we construct variational integrators with fixed time step for time-dependent Lagrangian systems modelling an important class of autonomous dissipative systems. These …
The prescribed-time stabilization problem for a general class of nonlinear systems with unknown input gain and appended dynamics (with unmeasured state) is addressed. Unlike the asymptotic stabilization problem, the prescribed-time stabilization objective requires convergence of the state to the origin in a finite time that can be arbitrarily picked (i.e., prescribed) by the control system designer irrespective of the initial condition of the system. The class of systems considered is allowed to have general nonlinear uncertain terms throughout the system dynamics as well as uncertain appended…
This paper is devoted to the stabilization problem for nonlinear driftless control systems by means of a time-varying feedback control. It is assumed that the vector fields of the system together with their first order Lie brackets span the whole tangent space at the equilibrium. A family of trigonometric open-loop controls is constructed to approximate the gradient flow associated with a Lyapunov function. These controls are applied for the derivation of a time-varying feedback law under the sampling strategy. By using Lyapunov's direct method, we prove that the controller proposed ensures ex…

For a general class of dynamical systems (of which the canonical continuous and uniform discrete versions are but special cases), we prove that there is a state feedback gain such that the resulting closed-loop system is uniformly exponentially stable with a prescribed rate. The methods here generalize and extend Gramian-based linear state feedback control to much more general time domains, e.g. nonuniform discrete or a combination of continuous and discrete time. In conclusion, we discuss an experimental implementation of this theory.
In this paper the finite-time stabilization problem is solved for a linear time-varying system with unknown control direction by exploiting a modified version of the classical extremum seeking algorithm. We propose to use a suitable oscillatory input to modify the system dynamics, at least in an average sense, so as to satisfy a Differential Linear Matrix Inequality (DLMI) condition which in turns guarantees that the system's state remains inside a prescribed time varying hyper-ellipsoid in the state space. The finite-time stability (FTS) of the averaged dynamics implies the FTS of the origina…
In this paper, problems of optimal control are considered where in the objective function, in addition to the control cost there is a tracking term that measures the distance to a desired stationary state. The tracking term is given by some norm and therefore it is in general not differentiable. In the optimal control problem, the initial state is prescribed. We assume that the system is either exactly controllable in the classical sense or nodal profile controllable. We show that both for systems that are governed by ordinary differential equations and for infinite-dimensional systems, for ex…

This article is concerned with the internal feedback stabilization of the phase field system of Cahn-Hilliard type, modeling the phase separation in a binary mixture. Under suitable assumptions on an arbitrarily fixed stationary solution, we construct via spectral separation arguments a feedback controller having the support in an arbitrary open subset of the space domain, such that the closed loop nonlinear system exponentially reach the prescribed stationary solution. This feedback controller has a finite dimensional structure in the state space of solutions. In particular, every constant st…

This work represents a first contribution on the problem of boundary stabilization for the phase field system of Cahn-Hilliard type, which models the phase separation in a binary mixture. The feedback controller we design here is with actuation only on the temperature flow of the system, on one part of the boundary only. Moreover, it is of proportional type, given in an explicit form, expressed only in terms of the eigenfunctions of the Laplace operator, being easy to manipulate from the computational point of view. Furthermore, it ensures that the closed loop nonlinear system exponentially re…
It is a known fact that not all controllable systems can be asymptotically stabilized by a continuous static feedback. Several approaches have been developed throughout the last decades, including time-varying, dynamical and even discontinuous feedbacks. In the latter case, the sample-and-hold framework is widely used, in which the control input is held constant during sampling periods. Consequently, only practical stability can be achieved at best. Existing approaches often require solving optimization problems for finding stabilizing control actions exactly. In practice, each optimization ro…
Polymer 3D-printing has been commercialized rapidly during recent years, however, there remains a matter of improving the manufacturing speed. Screw extrusion has a strong potential to fasten the process through simultaneous operation of the filament production and the deposition. This paper develops a control algorithm for screw extrusion-based 3D printing of thermoplastic materials through an observer-based output feedback design. We consider the thermodynamic model describing the time evolution of the temperature profile of an extruded polymer by means of a partial differential equation (PD…
We study the backstepping stabilization of higher order linear and nonlinear Schrödinger equations on a finite interval, where the boundary feedback acts from the left Dirichlet boundary condition. The plant is stabilized with a prescribed rate of decay. The construction of the backstepping kernel is based on a challenging successive approximation analysis. This contrasts with the case of second order pdes. Second, we consider the case where the full state of the system cannot be measured at all times but some partial information such as measurements of a boundary trace are available. For this…
