Centuries of effort to improve imaging has focused on perfecting and combining lenses to obtain better optical performance and new functionalities. The arrival of nanotechnology has brought to this effort engineered surfaces called metalenses, which promise to make imaging devices more compact. However, unaddressed by this promise is the space between the lenses, which is crucial for image formation but takes up by far the most room in imaging systems. Here, we address this issue by presenting the concept of and experimentally demonstrating an optical 'spaceplate', an optic that effectively propagates light for a distance that can be considerably longer than the plate thickness. Such an optic would shrink future imaging systems, opening the possibility for ultra-thin monolithic cameras. More broadly, a spaceplate can be applied to miniaturize important devices that implicitly manipulate the spatial profile of light, for example, solar concentrators, collimators for light sources, integrated optical components, and spectrometers.
We propose a new detection method for ultrasound-modulated optical tomography that allows us to perform parallel speckle detection with optimum shot-noise sensitivity, using a CCD camera. Moreover, we show that making use of a spatial filter system allows us to fully filter out speckle decorrelation noise. This method is confirmed by a test experiment
In this work, we perform a detailed review about the theoretical modeling of the optical propagation of ultra-short pulses in different scenarios of nonlinear optics. In particular, we focus our efforts on optical fibers and uniform media, with special attention on the white light continuum generation by using gases.
Using analytical modeling and detailed numerical simulations, we investigate properties of hybrid systems of Photonic Crystal micro-cavities which incorporate a highly non-linear Ultra Slow Light medium. We demonstrate that such systems, while being miniature in size (order wavelength), and integrable, could enable ultra-fast non-linear all-optical switching at single photon energy levels.
We propose a scheme to generate temporal vector optical solitons in a lifetime broadened five-state atomic medium via electromagnetically induced transparency. We show that this scheme, which is fundamentally different from the passive one by using optical fibers, is capable of achieving distortion-free vector optical solitons with ultraslow propagating velocity under very weak drive conditions. We demonstrate both analytically and numerically that it is easy to realize Manakov temporal vector solitons by actively manipulating the dispersion and self- and cross-phase modulation effects of the …
We introduce a new class of nondiffracting optical pulses possessing orbital angular momentum. By generalizing the X-waves solution of the Maxwell equation, we discover the coupling between angular momentum and the temporal degrees of freedom of ultra-short pulses. The spatial twist of propagation invariant light pulse turns out to be directly related to the number of optical cycles. Our results may trigger the development on novel multi-level classical and quantum transmission channels free of dispersion and diffraction, may also find application in the manipulation of nano-structured objects…
Pulses as short as 260 fs have been generated in a diode-pumped low-gain Er:Yb:glass laser by exploiting the nonlinear optical response of single-layer graphene. The application of this novel material to solid-state bulk lasers opens up a way to compact and robust lasers with ultrahigh repetition rates.
We report on the demonstration of a femtosecond all-optical modulator providing, without nonlinearity and therefore at arbitrarily low intensity, ultrafast light-by-light control. The device engages the coherent interaction of optical waves on a metamaterial nanostructure only 30 nm thick to efficiently control absorption of near-infrared (750-1040 nm) femtosecond pulses, providing switching contrast ratios approaching 3:1 with a modulation bandwidth in excess of 2 THz. The functional paradigm illustrated here opens the path to a family of novel meta-devices for ultra-fast optical data process…
The outstanding phase-noise performance of optical frequency combs has led to a revolution in optical synthesis and metrology, covering a myriad of applications, from molecular spectroscopy to laser ranging and optical communications. However, the ideal characteristics of an optical frequency comb are application dependent. In this review, the different techniques for the generation and processing of high-repetition-rate (>10 GHz) optical frequency combs with technologies compatible with optical communication equipment are covered. Particular emphasis is put on the benefits and prospects of th…
Optical metasurfaces have come into the spotlight as a promising platform for light manipulation at the nanoscale, including ultrafast all-optical control via excitation with femtosecond laser pulses. Recently, dichroic metasurfaces have been exploited to modulate the polarization state of light with unprecedented speed. Here, we theoretically predict and experimentally demonstrate by pump-probe spectroscopy the capability to reconfigure the ultrafast dichroic signal of a gold metasurface by simply acting on the polarization of the pump pulse, which is shown to reshape the spatio-temporal dist…
Light's orbital angular momentum (OAM) with inherent mode orthogonality has been suggested as a new way to the optical encryption. However, the dependence of annular intensity profiles on the topological charge complicates nanoscale light-matter interactions and hampers the ultra-secure encryption application. In this paper, we demonstrate ultra-secure image encryption by tightly focusing perfect optical vortex (POV) beams with controllable annular intensity profiles and OAM states. A simple scheme composed of single spatial light modulator is proposed to generate radius-controllable POV in ti…
We extend the concept of shortcut to adiabaticity to full-wave optics and provide application to the design of an ultra-compact waveguide junction. In particular, we introduce a procedure allowing one to synthesize a purely dielectric optical potential that precisely compensates for the non-adiabatic losses of the transverse-electric fundamental mode in any (sufficiently regular) two-dimensional waveguide junction. Our results are corroborated by finite-element method numerical simulations in a Poschl-Teller waveguide mode expander.
Acousto-Optical Coherence Tomography (AOCT) is a variant of Acousto Optic Imaging (also called Ultrasound modulated Optical Tomography) that makes possible to get resolution along the ultrasound propagation axis $z$. We present here new AOCT experimental results, and we study how the $z$ resolution depends on time step between phase jumps $T_ϕ$, or on the correlation length $Δz$. By working at low resolution, we perform a quantitative comparison of the $z$ measurements with the theoretical Point Spread Function (PSF). We present also images recorded with different $z$ resolution, and we qualit…
We demonstrate a novel mode locked ultrafast laser, based on an integrated high-Q micr-oring resonator. Our scheme exhibits stable operation of two slightly shifted spectral optical comb replicas. It generates a highly monochromatic radiofrequency modulation of 60MHz on a 200GHz output pulse train, with a linewidth < 10kHz
Optical whispering-gallery microresonators are useful tools in microphotonics, and nonlinear optics at very low threshold powers. Here, we present details about the fabrication of ultra-high-Q whispering-gallery-mode resonators made by CO2-laser lathe machining of fused-quartz rods. The resonators can be fabricated in less than one minute and the obtained optical quality factors exceed Q = 10^9. Demonstrated resonator diameters are in the range between 170 μm and 8 mm (free spectral ranges between 390 GHz and 8 GHz). Using these microresonators, a variety of optical nonlinearities are observed…
We describe theoretical and experimental demonstration for optical detection of ultrasound using a spectral hole engraved in cryogenically cooled rare-earth ion doped solids. Our method utilizes the dispersion effects due to the spectral hole to perform phase to amplitude modulation conversion. Like previous approaches using spectral holes it has the advantage of detection with large étendue. The method also has the benefit that high sensitivity can be obtained with moderate absorption contrast for the spectral holes.
Focusing light inside scattering media in a freely addressable fashion is challenging, as the wavefront of the scattered light is highly disordered. Recently developed ultrasound-guided wavefront shaping methods are addressing this challenge, albeit with relatively low modulation efficiency and resolution limitations. In this paper, we present a new technique, time-reversed ultrasound microbubble encoded (TRUME) optical focusing, which is able to focus light with improved efficiency and sub-ultrasound wavelength resolution. This method ultrasonically destructs microbubbles, and measures the wa…
We have developed a novel integrated platform for liquid photonics based on liquid core optical fiber (LCOF). The platform is created by fusion splicing liquid core optical fiber to standard single-mode optical fiber making it fully integrated and practical - a major challenge that has greatly hindered progress in liquid-photonic applications. As an example, we report here the realization of ultralow threshold Raman generation using an integrated CS2 filled LCOF pumped with sub-nanosecond pulses at 1064nm and 532nm. The measured energy threshold for the Stokes generation is ~ 1nJ, about three …
We report the design of highly efficient optical antennas employing a judicious synthesis of metallic and dielectric materials. In the proposed scheme, a pair of metallic coupled nanoparticles permits large enhancements in both excitation strength and radiative decay rates, while a high refractive index dielectric microsphere is employed to efficiently collect light without spoiling the emitter quantum efficiency. Our simulations indicate potential fluorescence rate enhancements of 3 orders of magnitude over the entire optical frequency range.
We report an in-line polarization-dependent all-optical fiber modulator based on a stereo graphene-microfiber structure (GMF) by utilizing the lab-on-rod technique. Owing to the unique spring-like geometry, an ultra-long GMF interaction length can be achieved, and an ultra-high modulation depth (MD) of ~7.5 dB and a high modulation efficiency (ME) of ~0.2 dB/mW were demonstrated for one polarization state. The MD and ME are more than one order larger than those of other graphene-waveguide hybrid all-optical modulators. By further optimizing the transferring and cleaning process, the modulator …
Optical absorbers find uses in a wide array of applications across the electromagnetic spectrum, including photovoltaic and photochemical cells, photodetectors, optical filters, stealth technology, and thermal light sources. Recent efforts have sought to reduce the footprint of optical absorbers, conventionally based on graded structures or Fabry-Perot-type cavities, by using the emerging concepts of plasmonics, metamaterials, and metasurfaces. Unfortunately, these new absorber designs require patterning on subwavelength length scales, and are therefore impractical for many large-scale optical…
A highly sensitive optical capillary electrophoresis measurement method based on a nanofluidic optical fiber platform is presented. By using scaling arguments and considering realistic instrument limitations, I underline the feasibility of measuring the electrophoretic mobility of a single freely-diffusing nanoparticle or macromolecule in vitro, continuously and indefinitely, with microsecond time resolution. The high speed of this technique opens up new possibilities for studying reaction kinetics at the single molecule level.
We demonstrate nanowatt-level saturated absorption using a sub-wavelength diameter tapered optical fiber (TOF) suspended in a gas of metastable xenon atoms. This ultralow-power nonlinearity is enabled by a small optical mode area propagating over a relatively long distance through the Xe gas. The use of inert noble gasses in these kinds of TOF experiments may offer practical advantages over the use of reactive alkali vapors such as rubidium.
Nowadays, ultrasound sensors are playing an irreplaceable role in the fields of biomedical imaging and industrial nondestructive inspection. Currently, piezoelectric transducers are the most widely used ultrasound sensors, but their sensitivities drop quickly when the size becomes smaller, leading to a typical sensor size at the millimeter to centimeter scale. In order to realize both high sensitivity and spatial resolution, various optical ultrasound sensors have been developed. Among them, ultrasound sensors using high-$Q$ optical microcavities have realized unprecedented sensitivities and b…
Deep-tissue optical imaging is a longstanding challenge limited by scattering. Both optical imaging and treatment can benefit from focusing light in deep tissue beyond one transport mean free path. Wavefront shaping based on time-reversed ultrasonically encoded (TRUE) optical focusing utilizes ultrasound focus, which is much less scattered than light in biological tissues as the 'guide star'. However, the traditional TRUE is limited by the ultrasound focusing area and pressure tagging efficiency, especially in acoustically heterogeneous medium. Even the improved version of iterative TRUE comes…
We present a design for an ultra-stable cryogenically cooled sapphire optical cavity system, with fractional frequency stability better than 1 x 10^-16 at one second integration time. We plan to use such ultra-stable cavities to perform a test of the isotropy of light propagation at the 10^-20 level.
Here, ultra-low relative phase jitters over a wide optical spectrum were achieved for dual Ti:Sapphire optical frequency combs. The two optical frequency combs were independently phase-locked to a Sr optical lattice clock laser delivered through a commercial optical fiber network. We confirmed that the relative phase jitters between the two combs integrated from 8.3 mHz to 200 kHz were below 1 rad, corresponding to a relative linewidth of below 8.3 mHz, over the entire wavelength of the optical frequency combs ranging from 550 nm to 1020 nm. Our work paves the way for ultrahigh-precision dual-…
Progress made in optical references, including ultra-stable Fabry-Perot cavities, optical frequency combs and optical atomic clocks, have driven the need for ultra-stable optical fiber networks. Telecom-wavelength ultra-pure optical signal transport has been demonstrated on distances ranging from the laboratory scale to the continental scale. In this manuscript, we present a Doppler-cancellation setup based on a digital phase-locked loop for ultra-stable optical signal dissemination over fiber. The optical phase stabilization setup is based on a usual heterodyne Michelson-interferometer setup,…
We present a novel setup to measure the transverse magneto-optical Kerr effect in the extreme ultraviolet spectral range at exceptionally high repetition rates based on a fiber laser amplifier system. Furthermore, the setup is equipped with a strong electromagnet and a cryostat, allowing measurements between 10 and 420 K using magnetic fields up to 0.86 T. The performance of our setup is demonstrated by a set of temper…
In this letter, we introduce the concept and experimentally demonstrate an ultralong Faraday laser as an optical frequency standard in principle. The ultralong Faraday laser is based on the Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter (FADOF) with ultra-narrow bandwidth and the ultralong fiber extended cavity of $800$ m. The ultra-narrow FADOF is based on atomic transition line of isotope $^{87}$Rb, which has an ultra-narrow bandwidth of $26.0$ MHz and a transmission of $23.6\%$ at $780$ nm. Fibers of length $150$ m and $800$ m are used as ultralong fiber extended cavities, which provide optica…
The realization of all-optical integration and optical computing has always been our goal. One of the most significant challenges is to make integrated all-optical logic devices as small as possible. Here, we report the implementation of ultra-compact all-optical logic devices and integrated chips on silicon photonic platforms by topology optimization. The footprint for the fabricated all-optical logic gates with XOR and OR functions is only 1.3*1.3 μm2 (~0.84λ*0.84λ), that are the smallest all-optical dielectric logic devices ever verified in experiments in the optical communication range. The framework of tunnelling states in amorphous media provides the dissipative mechanism that imposes fundamental limits on the performances of ultra-high-Q optical and microwave resonators. In the optical domain, however, the microscopic nature of the tunnelling states and their direct consequences to the optical losses have not been characterized. In this work, we examine the interplay between glassy physics and stoichiometric point defects of ultra-low-loss dielectric mirrors, with a focus on two-level systems of oxygen defects in metal oxide, Ta$_2$O$_5$. In the context of ultra-high-fines…
We demonstrate the optical generation of dynamic dark optical ring lattices, which do not require Laguerre-Gauss beams, large optical coherence lengths or interferometric stability. Simple control signals lead to spatial modulation and reproducible rotation, offering manifold possibilities for complex dynamic ring lattices. In conjunction with a magnetic trap, these scanned 2D intensity distributions from a single laser beam will enable precision trapping and manipulation of ultracold species using blue-detuned light. The technique is ideal for azimuthal ratchet, Mott insulator and persistent …
We report an optical link of 540 km for ultrastable frequency distribution over the Internet fiber network. The stable frequency optical signal is processed enabling uninterrupted propagation on both directions. The robustness and the performance of the link are enhanced by a cost effective fully automated optoelectronic station. This device is able to coherently regenerate the return optical signal with a heterodyne optical phase locking of a low noise laser diode. Moreover the incoming signal polarization variation are tracked and processed in order to maintain beat note amplitudes within th…
An optical resonator with intracavity Kerr nonlinearity can exhibit dispersive bistability suitable for all-optical switching. With nanophotonic elements it may be possible to achieve attojoule switching energies, which would be very attractive for ultra-low power operation but potentially problematic because of quantum fluctuation-induced spontaneous switching. In this manuscript I derive a quantum-optical model of two Kerr-nonlinear ring resonators connected in a coherent feedback loop, and show via numerical simulation that a properly designed `controller' cavity can significantly reduce th…
Optical static random access memory (O-SRAM) is one of the key components required for achieving the goal of ultra-fast, general-purpose optical computing. We propose and design a novel O-SRAM using fabrication-friendly photonics device components such as cross-coupled micro-ring resonators and photodiodes. Based on the chosen photonic components, the memory operates at a speed of 20 Gb/s and requires ultra-low static (switching) energy of ~ 16.7 aJ/bit (~ 1.04 pJ/bit) to store a single bit. The footprint of the bit cell is ~ 2400 μm^2. The proposed O-SRAM can be configured in a 2D memory arra…
We have observed the spatial interactions between two ultra-weak optical beams that are initially collinear and non-overlapping. The weak beams are steered towards each other by a spatially varying cross-Kerr refractive index waveguide written by a strong laser beam in a three-level atomic medium utilizing quantum coherence. After being brought together, the weak beams show controllable phase-dependent outcomes. This is the first observation of soliton-like interactions between weak beams and can be useful for all-optically tunable beam-combining, switching and gates for weak photonic signals.
Ultrafast control of magnetization on the nanometer length scale, in particular all-optical switching, is key to putting ultrafast magnetism on the path towards future technological application in data storage technology. However, magnetization manipulation with light on this length scale is challenging due to the wavelength limitations of optical radiation. Here, we excite transient magnetic gratings in a GdFe alloy with a periodicity of 87 nm by interference of two coherent femtosecond light pulses in the extreme ultraviolet spectral range at the free electron laser facility FERMI. The subse…
Light Wave transmission -- its compression, amplification, and the optical energy storage -- in an Ultra Slow Wave Medium (USWM) is studied analytically. Our phenomenological treatment is based entirely on the continuity equation for the optical energy flux, and the well known distribution-product property of Dirac delta-function. The results so obtained provide a clear understanding of some recent experiments on light transmission and its complete stoppage in an USWM. Keywords : Ultra slow light, stopped light, slow wave medium, EIT.
Direct access to the electric field of light provides a subcycle view of the polarization response of matter, thus enabling sensitive metrology in physics, chemistry, and medicine. Optical-field sampling techniques take advantage of some process that lasts much less than an optical cycle of the measured light wave. Most of them rely on the generation of free electrons either by a weak extreme ultraviolet pulse or by a strong optical pulse. The ability of such techniques to detect weak signals is limited by undesirable effects associated with ionization. An alternative is all-optical methods, w…
Ultrasound modulated optical tomography (UOT) is a powerful imaging technique to discriminate healthy from unhealthy biological tissues based on their optical signature. Among the numerous detection techniques developed for acousto-optic imaging, only those based on spectral filtering are intrinsically immune to speckle decorrelation. This paper reports on UOT imaging based on spectral hole burning in Tm:YAG crystal under a moderate magnetic field (200G) with a well-defined orientation. The deep and long-lasting holes translate into a more efficient UOT imaging with a higher contrast and faste…
We present an investigation of magneto-optic rotation in both the Faraday and Voigt geometries. We show that more physical insight can be gained in a comparison of the Faraday and Voigt effects by visualising optical rotation trajectories on the Poincare sphere. This insight is applied to design and experimentally demonstrate an improved ultra-narrow optical bandpass filter based on combining optical rotation from two cascaded cells - one in the Faraday geometry and one in the Voigt geometry. Our optical filter has an equivalent noise bandwidth of 0.56 GHz, and a figure-of-merit value of 1.22(…
