Modeling of optical amplifier waveguide based on silicon nanostructures and rare earth ions doped silica matrix gain media by a finite-difference time-domain method: comparison of achievable gain with Er3+ or Nd3+ ions dopants

A comparative study of the gain achievement is performed in a waveguide optical amplifier whose active layer is constituted by a silica matrix containing silicon nanograins acting as sensitizer of either neodymium ions (Nd 3+) or erbium ions (Er 3+). Three orders of magnitude cavity-linewidth narrowing by slow light in a rare-earth-ion-doped crystal cavity

Three orders of magnitude cavity-linewidth narrowing in a rare-earth-ion-doped crystal cavity, induced by strong intra-cavity dispersion caused by off-resonant interaction with dopant ions is demonstrated. The strong dispersion is created by semi-permanent but rapidly reprogrammable changes of the rare earth absorption profiles using optical pumping techniques. Several cavity modes are shown within the spectral transmission window. Potential applications are discussed.

Luminescent Ions in Silica-Based Optical Fibers

We present some of our research activities dedicated to doped silica-based optical fibers, aiming at understanding the spectral properties of luminescent ions, such as rare-earth and transition metal elements. The influence of the local environment on dopants is extensively studied: energy transfer mechanisms between rare-earth ions, control of the valence state of chromium ions, effect of the local phonon energy on thulium ions emission efficiency, and broadening of erbium ions emission induced by oxide nanoparticles. Knowledge of these effects is essential for photonics applications.

Microwave to optical photon conversion via fully concentrated rare-earth ion crystals

Most investigations of rare earth ions in solids for quantum information have used rare earth ion doped crystals. Here we analyse the conversion of quantum information from microwave photons to optical frequencies using crystals where the rare earth ions, rather than being dopants, are part of the host crystal. The potential of large ion densities and small linewidths makes such systems very attractive in this application. We show that, as well as high efficiency, large bandwidth conversion is possible. Microscale crystalline rare-earth doped resonators for strain-coupled optomechanics

Rare-earth ion doped crystals for hybrid quantum technologies is an area of growing interest in the solid-state physics community. We have earlier theoretically proposed a hybrid scheme of a mechanical resonator which is fabricated out of a rare-earth doped mono-crystalline structure. The rare-earth ion dopants have absorption energies which are sensitive to crystal strain, and it is thus possible to couple the ions to the bending motion of the crystal cantilever.
