We report an easy and broadly applicable method for the controlled self-assembly of atomically precise Au32(nBu3P)12Cl8 nanoclusters into micro-crystals. This enables the determination of emergent optoelectronic properties resulting from long-range order in such assemblies. Compared to the same nanoclusters in glassy, polycrystalline ensembles, we find a 100-fold increase in the electric conductivity and charge carrier mobility as well as additional optical transitions. We show that these effects are due to a vanishing energetic disorder and a drastically reduced activation energy to charge transport in the highly ordered assemblies. This first structure-transport correlation on self-assembled superstructures of atomically precise gold nanoclusters paves the way towards functional materials with novel collective optoelectronic properties.
We report the design and characterization of a self-assembled, locally resonant acoustic metamaterial for Lamb waves, composed of a monolayer of $1.02$ $μ$m polystyrene microspheres adhered to a $1.3$ $μ$m thick free-standing silicon membrane. A laser-induced transient grating technique is used to generate Lamb waves in the metamaterial and measure its acoustic response. The measurements reveal a microsphere contact resonance and the lowest frequency spheroidal microsphere resonance. The measured dispersion curves show hybridization of flexural Lamb waves with the microsphere contact resonance…
Mn has been found to self-assemble into atomic chains running perpendicular to the surface dimer reconstruction on Si(001). They differ from other atomic chains by a striking asymmetric appearance in filled state scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) images. This has prompted complicated structural models involving up to three Mn atoms per chain unit. Combining STM, atomic force microscopy and density functional theory we find that a simple necklace-like chain of single Mn atoms reproduces all their prominent features, including their asymmetry not captured by current models. The upshot is a rem…
Materials irradiated with multiple femtosecond laser pulses in sub-ablation conditions are observed to develop various types of self-assembled morphologies that range from nano-ripples to periodic micro-grooves and quasi-periodic micro-spikes. Here, we present a physical scenario that couples electrodynamics, describing surface plasmon excitation, with hydrodynamics, describing Marangoni convection, to elucidate this important sub-ablation regime of light matter interaction in which matter is being modified, however, the underlying process is not yet fully understood. The proposed physical mec…
Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of organic molecules are widely employed in surface chemistry and biology, and serve as ultra-fine lithographic resists. Due to their small thickness of only a few nanometers, the analysis of patterned monolayer surfaces using conventional methods requires thorough point-by-point scanning using complicated equipment. In the work reported herein, patterned monolayers are simply and directly observed using a bright-field optical microscope. The monolayers modify the spectral reflectivity pattern of a silica-on-silicon thin film, and introduce a contrast between b…
Planar array of self-assembled Ga$_{x}$Fe$_{4-x}$N nanocrystals in GaN: Magnetic anisotropy determined via ferromagnetic resonance
Water nanoclusters ejected to space from abundant amorphous water-ice-coated cosmic dust have been proposed to constitute Rydberg baryonic dark matter. This phenomenological model is now qualitatively supported by several recent observations: the laboratory-generated ejection of water nanoclusters from amorphous water-ice; the absence of dark matter in Galaxy NGC 1052-DF2; a recent study of dark matter in distant galaxies reporting the direct interaction of dark matter with galactic baryonic matter; the bullet cluster; and the birefringence of the cosmic microwave background. A link between Ry…
In this work we report on the controlled fabrication of a self-assembled line network in highly epitaxial BiFeO3 thin films on top of LaAlO3 in the kinetically limited grown region by RF sputtering. As previously shown in the case of manganite thin films, the remarkable degree of ordering is achieved using vicinal substrates with well-defined step-terrace morphology. Nanostructured BiFeO3 thin films show mixed-phase morphology. Besides typical formation following (100) and (010) axes, some mixed phase nanodomains are detected also in-between the regular line network. These particular microstru…
In the present work, the formation of silver and copper nanostructures on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) modified with self-assembled gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) is demonstrated. Surface patterning with nanometer resolution was achieved. Different methods such as field emission scanning electron microscopy (FEGSEM), energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used to illustrate a selective deposition of silver and copper on Au NPs. The mechanism of silver and copper ions reduction on Au NP with $n$-dodecanethiol coating is discussed.
Magnetic skyrmions are nontrivial spin textures which resist external perturbations, being promising candidates for the next generation recording devices. Nevertheless, a major challenge in realizing skyrmion-based devices is the stabilization of ordered arrays of these spin textures under ambient conditions and zero applied field. Here, we demonstrate for the first time the formation and stabilization of magnetic skyrmions on arrays of self-assembled hexagonal nanodomes taking advantage of the intrinsic properties of its curved geometry. Magnetic force microscopy images from the arrays of 100…
The influence of hydride exposure on previously unreported self-assembled InP(As) nanostructures is investigated, showing an unexpected morphological variability with growth parameters, and producing a large family of InP(As) nanostructures by metalorganic vapour phase epitaxy, from dome and ring-like structures to double dot in a ring ensembles. Moreover, preliminary microphotoluminescence data are indicating the capped rings system as an interesting candidate for single quantum emitters at telecom wavelengths, potentially becoming a possible alternative to InAs QDs for quantum technology and…
To quantify charge transport through molecular junctions fabricated using the conducting probe atomic force microscopy (CP-AFM) platform, information on the number of molecules $N$ per junction is absolutely necessary. $N$ can be currently obtained only via contact mechanics, and the Young's modulus $E$ of the self-assembled monolayer (SAM) utilized in the key quantity for this approach. The experimental determination of $E$ for SAMs of CP-AFM junctions fabricated using oligophenylene dithiols (OPDn, $1 \leq n \leq 4$) and gold electrodes turned out to be too challenging. Recent measurements (…
Recent developments in gravitation theory indicate that the classic general relativity is an effective macroscopic theory which will be eventually replaced with a more fundamental theory based on thermodynamics of yet unknown microscopic degrees of freedom. Here we consider thermodynamics of an effective Minkowski spacetime which may be formed under the influence of external magnetic field in a cobalt ferrofluid. It appears that the extraordinary photons propagating inside the ferrofluid perceive thermal gradients in the ferrofluid as an effective gravitational field, which obeys the Newton la…

We investigate the electron and hole spin relaxation in an ensemble of self-assembled InAs/In$_{0.53}$Al$_{0.24}$Ga$_{0.23}$As/InP quantum dots with emission wavelengths around $1.5$~$μ$m by pump-probe Faraday rotation spectroscopy. Electron spin dephasing due to the randomly oriented nuclear Overhauser fields is observed. At low temperatures we find a sub-microsecond longitudinal electron spin relaxation time $T_1$ which unexpectedly strongly depends on temperature. At high temperatures the electron spin relaxation time is limited by optical phonon scattering through spin-orbit interaction de…

Two new photo-switchable terphenylthiazoles molecules are synthesized and self-assembled as monolayers on Au and on ferromagnetic Co electrodes. The electron transport properties probed by conductive atomic force microscopy in ultra-high vacuum reveal a conductance of the light-induced closed (c) form larger than for the open (o) form. We report an unprecedented conductance ratio up to 380 between the closed and open forms on Co for the molecule with the anchoring group (thiol) on the side of the two N atoms of the thiazole unit. This result is rationalized by Density Functional Theory (DFT) c…
Auger recombination is a non-radiative process, where the recombination energy of an electron-hole pair is transferred to a third charge carrier. It is a common effect in colloidal quantum dots that quenches the radiative emission with an Auger recombination time below nanoseconds. In self-assembled QDs, the Auger recombination has been observed with a much longer recombination time in the order of microseconds. Here, we use two-color laser excitation on the exciton and trion transition in resonance fluorescence on a single self-assembled quantum dot to monitor in real-time every quantum event…
