We show that affine subspaces of Euclidean space are of Khintchine type for divergence under certain multiplicative Diophantine conditions on the parametrizing matrix. This provides evidence towards the conjecture that all affine subspaces of Euclidean space are of Khintchine type for divergence, or that Khintchine's theorem still holds when restricted to the subspace. This result is proved as a special case of a more general Hausdorff measure result from which the Hausdorff dimension of W(τ) intersected with an appropriate subspace is also obtained.
In this paper we establish the convergence case of Khintchine's theorem for affine hyperplanes in function field of positive characteristic. Along with that, we also prove a quantitative version of the same. The main technique used in the proof is a dynamical result called `Quantitative nondivergence' due to D. Y. Kleinbock and G. A. Margulis [17].
We show that affine coordinate subspaces of dimension at least two in Euclidean space are of Khintchine type for divergence. For affine coordinate subspaces of dimension one, we prove a result which depends on the dual Diophantine type of the basepoint of the subspace. These results provide evidence for the conjecture that all affine subspaces of Euclidean space are of Khintchine type for divergence.
We prove that the convergence Khintchine theorem holds for affine hyperplanes whose parametrizing matrices satisfy a mild Diophantine condition. We use the dynamical method of Kleinbock-Margulis.
We show that affine coordinate subspaces of dimension at least two in Euclidean space are of Khintchine type for divergence. For affine coordinate subspaces of dimension one, we prove a result which depends on the dual Diophantine type of the base point of the subspace. These results provide evidence for the conjecture that all affine subspaces of Euclidean space are of Khintchine type for divergence. We also prove a partial analogue regarding the Hausdorff measure theory. Furthermore, we obtain various results relating weighted Diophantine approximation and Dirichlet improvability. In particu…
In this paper we study random iterated function systems. Our main result gives sufficient conditions for an analogue of a well known theorem due to Khintchine from Diophantine approximation to hold almost surely for stochastically self-similar and self-affine random iterated function systems.
Recently, Adiceam, Beresnevich, Levesley, Velani and Zorin proved a quantitative version of the convergence case of the Khintchine-Groshev theorem for nondegenerate manifolds, motivated by applications to interference alignment. In the present paper, we obtain analogues of their results for affine subspaces.
We prove the convergence and divergence cases of an inhomogeneous Khintchine-Groshev type theorem for dual approximation restricted to affine subspaces in $\mathbb{R} ^n$. The divergence results are proved in the more general context of Hausdorff measures.
We apply nondivergence estimates for flows on homogeneous spaces to compute Diophantine exponents of affine subspaces of $\R^n$ and their nondegenerate submanifolds.
We solve the convergence case of the generalized Baker-Schmidt problem for simultaneous approximation on affine subspaces, under natural diophantine type conditions. In one of our theorems, we do not require monotonicity on the approximation function. In order to prove these results, we establish asymptotic formulae for the number of rational points close to an affine subspace. One key ingredient is a sharp upper bound on a certain sum of reciprocals of fractional parts associated with the matrix defining the affine subspace.
In this paper we introduce a new approach and obtain new results for the problem of studying polynomial images of affine subspaces of finite fields. We improve and generalise several previous known results, and also extend the range of such results to polynomials of degrees higher than the characteristic of the field. Such results have a wide scope of applications similar to those associated with their counterparts studying consecutive intervals over prime fields instead of affine subspaces. Here we give only two immediate consequences: to a bound on the size of the intersection of orbits of p…
Consider irrational affine subspace $ A\subset \mathbb{R}^d$ of dimension $a$. We prove that the set $$ \{ξ=(ξ_1,...,ξ_d) \in {A}:\,\,\, \ q^{1/a}\cdot \max_{1\le i \le d} ||qξ_i|| \to \infty,\,\,\,\, q\to \infty\} $$ is an $α$-winning set for every $α\in (0,1/2]$
We prove inheritance of measure zero property of the set of singular vectors for affine subspaces and submanifolds inside those affine subspaces. We define a notion of $n$-singularity for matrices, which is closely related to the uniform exponent of irrationality. For certain affine subspaces, we show that the set of singular vectors has measure zero if and only if the parametrizing matrix is not $n$-singular. In particular, we show for affine hyperplanes the set of singular vectors has measure zero if and only if the parametrizing matrix is not rational.
We consider the function $x^{-1}$ that inverses a finite field element $x \in \mathbb{F}_{p^n}$ ($p$ is prime, $0^{-1} = 0$) and affine $\mathbb{F}_{p}$-subspaces of $\mathbb{F}_{p^n}$ such that their images are affine subspaces as well. It is proven that the image of an affine subspace $L$, $|L| > 2$, is an affine subspace if and only if $L = q \mathbb{F}_{p^k}$, where $q \in \mathbb{F}_{p^n}^{*}$ and $k \mid n$. In other words, it is either a subfield of $\mathbb{F}_{p^n}$ or a subspace consisting of all elements of a subfield multiplied by $q$. This generalizes the results that were obtaine…

In this paper we discuss metric theory associated with the affine (inhomogeneous) linear forms in the so called doubly metric settings within the classical and the mixed setups. We consider the system of affine forms given by $\qq\mapsto \qq X+\bfalpha$, where $\qq\in\Z^m$ (viewed as a row vector), $X$ is an $m\times n$ real matrix and $\bfalpha\in \R^n$. The classical setting refers to the ${\rm dist}(\qq X+\bfalpha, \Z^m)$ to measure the closeness of the integer values of the system $(X, \bfalpha)$ to integers. The absolute value setting is obtained by replacing ${\rm dist}(\qq X+\bfalpha, \…
For an integer $r$, a prime power $q$, and a polynomial $f$ over a finite field ${\mathbb F}_{q^r}$ of $q^r$ elements, we obtain an upper bound on the frequency of elements in an orbit generated by iterations of $f$ which fall in a proper subfield of ${\mathbb F}_{q^r}$. We also obtain similar results for elements in affine subspaces of ${\mathbb F}_{q^r}$, considered as a linear space over ${\mathbb F}_q$.
It is known that the properties of almost all points of R^n being not very well (multiplicatively) approximable are inherited by nondegenerate in R^n (read: not contained in a proper affine subspace) smooth submanifolds. In this paper we consider submanifolds which are contained in proper affine subspaces, and prove that the aforementioned diophantine properties pass from a subspace to its nondegenerate submanifold. The proofs are based on a correspondence between multidimensional diophantine approximation and dynamics of lattices in Euclidean spaces.
We provide an observation relating several known and conjectured $q$-series identities to the theory of principal subspaces of basic modules for twisted affine Lie algebras. We also state and prove two new families of $q$-series identities. The first family provides quadruple sum representations for Nandi's identities, including a manifestly positive representation for the first identity. The second is a family of new mod 10 identities connected with principal characters of level 4 integrable, highest-weight modules of $\mathrm{D}_4^{(3)}$.
In recent years, the ergodic theory of group actions on homogeneous spaces has played a significant role in the metric theory of Diophantine approximation. We survey some recent developments with special emphasis on Diophantine properties of affine subspaces and their submanifolds.
