In order to efficiently explore the nearly infinite composition space in multicomponent solid solution alloys, it is important to establish predictive design strategies and use computation-aided methods. In the present work, we demonstrated the density functional theory calculations informed design routes for realizing transformation-induced plasticity (TRIP) and twinning-induced plasticity (TWIP) in Cr-Co-Ni medium entropy alloys (MEAs). We systematically studied the effects of magnetism and chemical composition on the generalized stacking fault energy surface (gamma-surface) and showed that both chemistry and the coupled magnetic state strongly affect the gamma-surface, consequently, the primary deformation modes. Based on the calculated effective energy barriers for the competing deformation modes, we constructed composition and magnetism dependent deformation maps at both room and cryogenic temperatures. Accordingly, we proposed various design routes for achieving desired primary deformation modes in the ternary Cr-Co-Ni alloys. The deformation mechanisms predicted by our theoretical models are in nice agreement with available experimental observations in literature. Furthermore, we fabricated two non-equiatomic Cr-Co-Ni MEAs possessing the designed TWIP and TRIP effects, showing excellent combinations of tensile strength and ductility.
The cyclic deformation behavior of extruded Mg-8.5wt.%Al alloy with a conventional extrusion texture and a modified texture is systematically investigated by in-situ neutron diffraction and elastic viscoplastic self-consistent (EVPSC) modeling incorporating a twinning/de-twinning (TDT) scheme. The role of twinning and de-twinning on the deformation behavior of Mg-8.5wt.% Al alloy is investigated in terms of the macroscopic stress-strain response, the evolution of the activities of various deformation mechanisms, the texture evolution, the evolution of the internal elastic strains, and the evol…
Metallic materials, especially steel, underpin transportation technologies. High-manganese twinning induced plasticity (TWIP) austenitic steels exhibit exceptional strength and ductility from twins, low-energy microstructural defects that form during plastic loading. Their high-strength could help light-weighting vehicles, and hence cut carbon emissions. TWIP steels are however very sensitive to hydrogen embrittlement that causes dramatic losses of ductility and toughness leading to catastrophic failure of engineering parts. Here, we examine the atomic-scale chemistry and interaction of hydrog…
Atomic scale understanding of the role of hydrogen and oxygen segregation in the embrittlement of grain boundaries in a twinning induced plasticity steel
In situ straining experiments were performed in a TEM on an equimolar CoCrFeMnNi (Cantor) high entropy alloy at room and cryogenic temperature. Perfect and partial dislocation activity were recorded in both cases. Twinning directly follows the development of partial dislocation shearing that has various origins (perfect dislocation splitting, anchoring). It is shown that, although twinning is more frequently observed at liquid nitrogen temperature, its prevalence depends mainly on crystal orientation. As a result, twinning and perfect dislocation plasticity are likely to occur jointly in rando…
There is growing interest in promoting deformation twinning for plasticity in advanced materials, as highly organized twin boundaries are beneficial to better strength-ductility combination in contrast to disordered grain boundaries. Twinning deformation typically involves the kinetics of stacking faults, its interaction with dislocations, and dislocation - twin boundary interactions. While the latter has been intensively investigated, the dynamics of stacking faults has been less known. In this work, we report several new insights on the stacking fault behavior in twin induced plasticity from…
The deformation mechanisms of an extruded Mg-5Y-0.08Ca (wt. %) alloy were analyzed by means of micropillar compression tests on single crystals along different orientations -- selected to activate specific deformation modes -- as well as slip trace analysis, transmission electron microscopy and transmission Kikuchi diffraction. The polycrystalline alloy presented a remarkable ductility in tension (~32%) and negligible differences in the yield strength between tension and compression. It was found that the presence of Y and Ca in solid solution led to a huge increase in the CRSS for <a> basal s…
Coarse-grained, metallic materials undergo microstructure refinement during tribological loading. This in turn results in changing tribological properties, so understanding deformation under tribological load is mandatory when designing tribological systems. Single-trace experiments were conducted to understand the initiation of deformation mechanisms acting in various tribological systems. The main scope of this work was to investigate the influence of normal and friction forces as well as crystal orientations on the dominating deformation mechanism in a face-centred cubic concentrated solid …
A high-throughput methodology is proposed, based on the combination of diffusion couples and advanced nanomechanical testing methods, to directly measure alloying effects on the critical resolved shear stress (CRSS) of individual deformation modes in Mg alloys. The methodology is tested in Mg-Zn alloys by assessing the alloying effects, up to Zn contents of 2 at.%, on basal slip, extension twining and pyramidal slip in two metallurgical condition: as-quenched, for which the Zn solute atoms remain homogenously dispersed in solid solution; and peak-aged, for which the Zn atoms form rod-shape $Mg…
The influence of the physical mechanisms activated during deformation and annealing on the microstructure and texture evolution as well as on the mechanical properties in the equiatomic CoCrFeMnNi high-entropy alloy (HEA) were investigated. A combination of cold rolling and annealing was used to investigate the HEA in the deformed, recovered, partially recrystallized, and fully recrystallized states. Detailed microstructure and texture analysis was performed by electron backscatter diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The mechanical properties were evaluated us…
A non-local model for the description of twinning in polycrystalline materials in the context of infinitesimal strains: application to a magnesium alloy
We provide a critical atomistic evidence of pseudoelastic behavior in complex solid-solution BCC Mo-W-Ta-Ti-Zr alloy. Prior to this work, only limited single-crystal BCC solids of pure metals and quaternary alloys have shown pseudoelastic behavior at low temperatures and high strain rates. The deformation mechanisms investigated using classical molecular simulations under tensile-compressive loading reveal temperature-dependent pseudoelastic behavior aided by twinning during the loading-unloading cycle. The pseudoelasticity is found to be independent of loading directions with identical cyclic…
First-principles alloy theory is used to establish the $γ$-surface of Fe-Cr-Ni alloys as function of chemical composition and temperature. The theoretical stacking fault energy (SFE) versus chemistry and temperature trends agree well with experiments. Combining our results with the recent plasticity theory based on the $γ$-surface, the stacking fault formation is predicted to be the leading deformation mechanism for alloys with effective stacking fault energy below about 18 mJ m$^{-2}$. Alloys with SFE above this critical value show both twinning and full slip at room temperature and twinning …
In this paper, compressive loading effects on the plasticity of Al-Cu alloy varying the crystal orientation of Al and alloying element (Cu) percentage are investigated using molecular dynamics approach. The alloying percentage of Cu are varied up to 10% in <001>, <110> and <111> crystal loading direction of Al. Our results indicate that the alloy nanopillar has highest first yielding strength and strain along <110> and <001> direction, respectively. Further, the dislocation density and dislocation interaction are studied to explain the compressive stress strain behavior of the alloy nanopillar…
In search for the origins of the extraordinary low twinning stress of Ni-Mn-Ga magnetic shape memory alloys we studied the thermally induced changes of structure in Ni$_{50}$Mn$_{25+x}$Ga$_{25-x}$ ($x$=2.7--3.9) single crystal samples and compared them with twinning stress dependences. The alloys exhibited transformation to five-layered (10M) martensite structure between 297 to 328 K. All samples exhibited magnetic shape memory effect. Just below the transformation temperature the samples had very low twinning stress of about 0.1--0.3 MPa, which increased with decreasing temperature. The struc…
Component failure due to cold dwell fatigue of titanium and its alloys is a long-standing problem which has significant safety and economic implications to the aviation industry. This can be addressed by understanding the governing mechanisms of time dependent plasticity behaviour of Ti at low temperatures. Here, stress relaxation tests were performed at four different temperatures on three major alloy systems: commercially pure titanium (two alloys with different oxygen content), Ti-6Al-4V (two microstructures with differing beta phase fractions) and Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-xMo (two alloys with differ…
Deformation twinning is a form of permanent deformation that is commonly observed in low symmetry crystals such as hexagonal close-packed (hcp) metals. With recent increased interest in using hcp metals, such as magnesium, in structural, automotive, and armor applications due to their high strength to weight ratio, there is a need for a comprehensive understanding of deformation twinning and its interaction with dislocation slip. A great deal has been learned at the microscopic level where individual dislocations interact with twin boundaries through atomistic simulations, and at the macroscop…
The mechanical behaviour of Mg-Al alloys can be largely improved by the formation of an intermetallic Laves phase skeleton, in particular the creep strength. Recent nanomechanical studies revealed plasticity by dislocation glide in the (Mg,Al)$_2$Ca Laves phase, even at room temperature. As strengthening skeleton, this phase remains, however, brittle at low temperature. In this work, we present experimental evidence of slip transfer from the Mg matrix to the (Mg,Al)$_2$Ca skeleton at room temperature and explore associated mechanisms by means of atomistic simulations. We identify two possible …
We study the effect of Stacking Fault Energy (SFE) on the deformation behaviour of copper and copper-aluminium alloys using Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulation. We find that both yield stress and the magnitude of stress drop at yield decrease with increasing Al content. This "anomalous" softening behaviour is explained on the basis of nucleation controlled yielding behaviour. Further, the decrease in stress drop is rationalised in terms of the stored energy available at yielding - we show that this decreases with increasing Al. As a result, the maximum dislocation density is found to decrease w…
Aiming at increasing the yield strength of transformation and twinning induced plasticity (TRIP and TWIP) titanium alloys, a dual-phase $α$/$β$ alloy is designed and studied. The composition Ti 7Cr 1.5Sn (wt.%) is proposed, based on an approach coupling Calphad calculations and classical Bo-Md design tool used in Ti-alloys. Its microstructure is made of 20% of $α$ precipitates in a $β$ matrix, the matrix having optimal Bo and Md parameters for deformation twinning and martensitic transformation. The alloy indeed displays a yield strength of 760 MPa, about 200 MPa above that of a Ti 8.5Cr 1.5Sn…
High-energy synchrotron x-rays are used to track grain rotations and the micromechanical evolution of a hexagonal Ti-7Al microstructure as it is cyclically loaded below its macroscopic yield stress. The evolution of the grains through 200 cycles reveals a continual change in von Mises stress and orientation across the entire specimen indicating a slow accumulation of plasticity even though the sample was cycled below its macroscopic yield. Grain reorientation is consistent with the development of a tension texture despite the negligible magnitude of (macroscopic) plastic strain. It is observed…
We have investigated the plastic deformation properties of non-equiatomic single phase Zr-Nb-Ti-Ta-Hf high-entropy alloys from room temperature up to 300 °C. Uniaxial deformation tests at a constant strain rate of 10$^{-4}$ s$^{-1}$ were performed including incremental tests such as stress-relaxations, strain-rate- and temperature changes in order to determine the thermodynamic activation parameters of the deformation process. The microstructure of deformed samples was characterized by transmission electron microscopy. The strength of the investigated Zr-Nb-Ti-Ta-Hf phase is not as high as the…
Plastic deformation of metallic alloys usually takes place through slip, but occasionally involves twinning. In particular, twinning is important in hexagonal close packed materials where the easy slip systems are insufficient to accommodate arbitrary deformations. While deformation by slip mechanisms is reasonably well understood, less remains known about deformation by twinning. Indeed, the identification of relevant twinning modes remains an art. In this paper, we develop an universal framework combining fundamental kinematic definition of twins with large scale atomistic calculations to pr…
Digital image correlation (DIC) and crystal plasticity simulation were utilised to study cold dwell behaviour in a coarse grain Ti-6Al alloy at 3 different temperatures up to 230 C. Strains extracted from large volume grains were measured during creep by DIC and were used to calibrate the crystal plasticity model. The values of critical resolved shear stresses (CRSS) of the two main slip systems (basal and prismatic) were determined as a function of temperature. Stress along paths across the boundaries of two grain pairs, (1) a `rogue' grain pair and (2) a `non-rogue' grain pair, were determin…
High-entropy alloys (HEAs) are solid solutions of multiple elements with equal atomic ratios which present an innovative pathway for de novo alloy engineering. While there exist extensive studies to ascertain the important structural aspects governing their mechanical behaviors, elucidating the underlying deformation mechanisms still remains a challenge. Using atomistic simulations, we probe the particle rearrangements in a yielding, model HEA system to understand the structural origin of its plasticity. We find the plastic deformation is initiated by irreversible topological fluctuations whic…
Contraction twinning in magnesium alloys leads to new grains that are misoriented from the parent grain by a rotation of 56 deg around the a-axis. The classical theory of deformation twinning does not precise the atomic displacements and does not explain why contractions twinning is less frequent than extension twinning. The paper proposes a new model in the continuity of our previous works on martensitic transformations and extension twinning. A continuous angular distortion matrix that transforms the initial hcp crystal into a final hcp crystal is determined such that the atoms move as hard …
The deformation and fatigue crack nucleation mechanisms were studied by means of slip trace analysis and secondary electron microscopy in a textured AZ31B-O Mg alloy subjected to fully-reversed cyclic deformation at two different cyclic strain semi-amplitudes. Samples were deformed in two orientations leading to symmetric and non-symmetric cyclic stress-strain curves due to the activation of different deformation mechanisms. They were ascertained in longitudinal sections of the specimens, which included a large number of grains (from 1500 to 4500 for each specimen), to obtain statistically sig…
In this paper, we investigate plasticity in irradiated FeCrAl nanopillars using discrete dislocation dynamics simulations (DDD), with comparisons to transmission electron microscopic (TEM) in situ tensile tests of ion and neutron irradiated commercial FeCrAl alloy C35M. The effects of irradiation-induced defects, such as a/2 111 and a 100 type loops and composition fluctuations representative of phase separation in irradiated FeCrAl alloys, are investigated separately as well as superposed together in simulations. We explore the effects of defects on the stress-strain behavior, specifically yi…
This work presents a three-dimensional constitutive model for shape memory alloys considering the TRansformation-Induced Plasticity (TRIP) as well as the Two-Way Shape Memory Effect (TWSME) through a large deformation framework. The presented logarithmic strain based model is able to capture the large strains and rotations exhibited by SMAs under general thermomechanical cycling. By using the martensitic volume fraction, transformation strain, internal stress, and TRIP strain tensors as internal state variables, the model is capable to capture the stress-dependent TRIP generation when SMAs are…
Magnesium (Mg) and its alloys hold great potential as an energy-saving structural material for automative, aerospace applications. However, the use of Mg alloys has been limited due to poor ductility and formability. Poor mechanical properties of Mg alloys origin from the insufficient number of slip systems, and deformation twinning plays an important role to accommodate plastic deformation. Here, we report a comprehensive experimental and modeling study to understand crystal size effect on the transformation in deformation modes in twin oriented Mg single crystals. The experiments reveal two …
The mechanical properties of polycrystalline metals are governed by the interaction of defects that are generated by deformation within the 3D microstructure. In materials that deform by slip, the plasticity is usually highly heterogeneous within the microstructure. Many experimental tools can be used to observe the results of slip events at the free surface of a sample; however, there are only a few methods for imaging these events in the bulk. In this article, the imaging of bulk slip events within the 3D microstructure are enabled by the combined use of X-ray diffraction contrast tomography…
Phase diagrams supported by density functional theory methods can be crucial for designing high-entropy alloys that are subset of multi-principal$-$element alloys. We present phase and property analysis of quinary (MoW)$_{x}$Zr$_{y}$(TaTi)$_{1-x-y}$ refractory high-entropy alloys from combined Calculation of Phase Diagram (CALPHAD) and density-functional theory results, supplemented by molecular dynamics simulations. Both CALPHAD and density-functional theory analysis of phase stability indicates a Mo-W-rich region of this quinary has a stable single-phase body-centered-cubic structure. We rep…
The martensitic transformation is one of the most important phenomena in metals science due to its essential contribution to the strength of steels and most engineering alloys. Yet the basic, atomistic mechanisms leading to martensite nucleation and twin morphology are not yet known. A detailed picture in this regard is required if the strengthening effects of martensite are to be properly understood. This work presents molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of the martensitic transformation using a model fcc/bcc semi-coherent interface with Nishiyama-Wasserman orientation relationship. Significa…
The present work deals with the microstructure and texture evolutions of a TWIP high entropy alloy at various temperatures. Toward this end, the tensile tests were conducted at temperatures ranging from 298 to 873 K under the strain rate of 0.001s-1. The experimented material exhibited an extraordinary room temperature work hardening behavior, in respect of both the instantaneous strain hardening exponent and the work hardening rate values. This resulted in an acceptable ultimate tensile strength /ductility balance and was justified considering the high activity of twinning and planar slip. Su…
The continuous miniaturization of modern electromechanical systems calls for a comprehensive understanding of the mechanical properties of metallic materials specific to micrometer and sub-micrometer scales. At these scales, the nature of dislocation-mediated plasticity changes radically: sub-micrometer metallic samples exhibit high yield strengths, however accompanied by detrimental intermittent strain fluctuations compromising forming processes and endangering structural stability. In this paper, we studied the effects of plate-like $θ^\prime$-Al$_2$Cu precipitates on the strength, plastic f…
Precipitation on deformation defects is essential for enhancing mechanical properties of age-hardenable alloys. {10-12} twinning is common in deformed alloys with hexagonal-close-packed structure. In this work, we revealed how {10-12} twin boundary (TB) influences beta-Mg17Al12 precipitation in Mg-9Al-1Zn alloy. The precipitates on the TB are rod-like, while others are lath-shape. The precipitates hold the Burgers orientation relationship (OR) only with twin or matrix, contrary to traditional wisdom in others alloys that precipitates on TB symmetrically keep an OR with both twin and matrix. Mo…
Many engineering applications of Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs) involve passing back and forth through phase transformation many times. Repeated phase transformation develops permanent deformations originating from the significant distortion that phase transformation induces at the austenite-martensite interfaces and grain boundaries. This distortion drives dislocation activity resulting in an observable macroscopic Transformation-Induced Plastic (TRIP) deformation, which occurs at effective stress levels much lower than the plastic yield limit of the material. TRIP strains may accumulate up to 20…
Metals with fcc structure may exhibit deformation twinning under specific conditions, which is an interesting but somewhat elusive aspect of their deformation behavior. It is well acknowledged that the phenomenon occurs through the activities of twinning partial dislocations. However, the lack of a comprehensive understanding of their fundamental properties obstructs the development of detailed multiscale models of crystal plasticity in the fcc metals. Here we explore the core-structures and lattice friction of twinning partials through atomistically informed numerical modeling. To this end, w…
Detailed microstructure characterisation and in-situ micropillar compression were coupled with crystal plasticity-based finite element modelling (CP-FEM) to study the micro-mechanisms of plastic anisotropy in lamellar TiAl alloys. The consideration of microstructure in both simulation and in-situ experiments enables in-depth understanding of micro-mechanisms responsible for the highly anisotropic deformation response of TiAl on the intra-lamella and inter-lamella scales. This study focuses on two specific configurations of γ/α_2 lamellar microstructure with the γ/α_2 interfaces being aligned {…
Shape memory alloys (SMAs) have been intensively investigated as actuators for the past several decades. Due to their high actuation energy density compared to other active materials, their current and potential applications in engineering fields are expanding rapidly. Prior to being used as actuators, SMAs are usually subjected to a training process to stabilize their behavior. During the training process, permanent changes are introduced in the microstructure of the material which results in the generation of internal stresses and a large amount of irrecoverable Transformation Induced Plasti…
Predicting the structural response of advanced multiphase alloys and understanding the underlying microscopic mechanisms that are responsible for it are two critically important roles modeling plays in alloy development. An alloys demonstration of superior properties, such as high strength, creep resistance, high ductility, and fracture toughness, is not sufficient to secure its use in widespread application. Still, a good model is needed, to take measurable alloy properties, such as microstructure and chemical composition, and forecast how the alloy will perform in specified mechanical deform…
Microstructural and Mechanistic Insights into the Tension-Compression Asymmetry of Rapidly Solidified Fe-Cr Alloys: A Phase Field and Strain Gradient Plasticity Study
An interatomic potential (termed EAM-21) has been developed with the embedded atomic method (EAM) for CrFeMnNi quaternary HEAs. This potential is based on a previously developed potential for CrFeNi ternary alloys. The parameters to develop the potential were determined by fitting to experimental values, density functional theory (DFT) and thermodynamic calculations, to reproduce the main crystal characteristics, namely: the stability of the fcc phase, elastic constants, and stacking fault energy. Its applicability for the study of plastic deformation mechanisms was checked by calculations of …
High-density and nanosized deformation twins in face-centered cubic (fcc)materials can effectively improve the combination of strength and ductility. However, the microscopic dislocation mechanisms enabling a high twinnability remain elusive. Twinning usually occurs via continuous nucleation and gliding of twinning partial dislocations on consecutive close-packed atomic planes. Here we unveil a completely different twinning mechanism being active in metastable fcc materials. The transformation-mediated twinning (TMT) is featured by a preceding displacive transformation from the fcc phase to th…
