The rotational dimension is a minor monotone graph invariant related to the dimension of an Euclidean space containing a spectral embedding corresponding to the first nonzero eigenvalue of the graph Laplacian, which is introduced by Göring, Helmberg and Wappler. In this paper, we study rotational dimensions of graphs which contain large complete graphs. The complete graph is characterized by its rotational dimension. It will be a obtained that a chordal graph may be made large while keeping the rotational dimension constant.
In this work, the classical Nelson -- Hadwiger problem is studied which lies on the edge of combinatorial geometry and graph theory. It concerns colorings of distance graphs in $ {\mathbb R}^n $, i.e., graphs such that their vertices are vectors and their edges are pairs of vectors at a distance from a given set of postive numbers apart. A series of new lower bounds are obtained for the chromatic numbers of such graphs with different restrictions on the clique numbers and the girths.
An $r$-uniform graph $G$ is dense if and only if every proper subgraph $G'$ of $G$ satisfies $λ(G') < λ(G)$, where $λ(G)$ is the Lagrangian of a hypergraph $G$. In 1980's, Sidorenko showed that $π(F)$, the Turán density of an $r$-uniform hypergraph $F$ is $r!$ multiplying the supremum of the Lagrangians of all dense $F$-hom-free $r$-uniform hypergraphs. This connection has been applied in estimating Turán density of hypergraphs. When $r=2$, the result of Motzkin and Straus shows that a graph is dense if and only if it is a complete graph. However, when $r\ge 3$, it becomes much harder to estim…
Motzkin and Straus established a remarkable connection between the maximum clique and the Lagrangian of a graph in 1965. This connection and its extensions were successfully employed in optimization to provide heuristics for the maximum clique number in graphs. It is useful in practice if similar results hold for hypergraphs. In this paper, we provide upper bounds on the Lagrangian of a hypergraph containing dense subgraphs when the number of edges of the hypergraph is in certain ranges. These results support a pair of conjectures introduced by Y. Peng and C. Zhao (2012) and extend a result of…
A regular clique in a regular graph is a clique such that every vertex outside of the clique is adjacent to the same positive number of vertices inside the clique. We continue the study of regular cliques in edge-regular graphs initiated by A. Neumaier in the 1980s and attracting current interest. We thus define a Neumaier graph to be an non-complete edge-regular graph containing a regular clique, and a strictly Neumaier graph to be a non-strongly regular Neumaier graph. We first prove some general results on Neumaier graphs and their feasible parameter tuples. We then apply these results to d…
Let $\cal C$ be a clique covering for $E(G)$ and let $v$ be a vertex of $G$. The valency of vertex $v$ (with respect to $\cal C$), denoted by $val_{\cal C}(v)$, is the number of cliques in $\cal C$ containing $v$. The local clique cover number of $G$, denoted by $lcc(G)$, is defined as the smallest integer $k$, for which there exists a clique covering for $E(G)$ such that $val_{\cal C}(v)$ is at most $k$, for every vertex $v\in V(G)$. In this paper, among other results, we prove that if $G$ is a claw-free graph, then $lcc(G)+χ(G)\leq n+1$.
The edge clique cover number $ecc(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the size of the smallest set of complete subgraphs whose union covers all edges of $G$. It has been conjectured that all the simple graphs with independence number two satisfy $ecc(G)\leq n$. First, we present a class of graphs containing edges difficult to cover but that satisfy the conjecture. Second, we describe a large class of graphs $G$ such that $ecc(G)\leq \frac{3}{2}n$. This class is easy to characterize.
The Erdos-Hajnal conjecture says that for every graph H there exists c>0 such that every graph G not containing H as an induced subgraph has a clique or stable set of cardinality at least |G|^c. We prove that this is true when H is a cycle of length five. We also prove several further results: for instance, that if C is a cycle and H is the complement of a forest, there exists c>0 such that every graph G containing neither of C,H as an induced subgraph has a clique or stable set of cardinality at least |G|^c.
We show that if G is a graph of sufficiently large order n containing as many r-cliques as the r-partite Turan graph of order n; then for some C>0 G has more than Cn^(r-1) (r+1)-cliques sharing a common edge unless G is isomorphic to the the r-partite Turan graph of order n. This structural result generalizes a previous result that has been useful in extremal graph theory.
Considering a natural generalization of the Ruzsa-Szemerédi problem, we prove that for any fixed positive integers $r,s$ with $r<s$, there are graphs on $n$ vertices containing $n^{r}e^{-O(\sqrt{\log{n}})}=n^{r-o(1)}$ copies of $K_s$ such that any $K_r$ is contained in at most one $K_s$. We also give bounds for the generalized rainbow Turán problem $\operatorname{ex}(n, H,$rainbow-$F)$ when $F$ is complete. In particular, we answer a question of Gerbner, Mészáros, Methuku and Palmer, showing that there are properly edge-coloured graphs on $n$ vertices with $n^{r-1-o(1)}$ copies of $K_r$ such t…
A vertex $w$ of a connected graph $G$ strongly resolves two vertices $u,v\in V(G)$, if there exists some shortest $u-w$ path containing $v$ or some shortest $v-w$ path containing $u$. A set $S$ of vertices is a strong metric generator for $G$ if every pair of vertices of $G$ is strongly resolved by some vertex of $S$. The smallest cardinality of a strong metric generator for $G$ is called the strong metric dimension of $G$. In this paper we obtain several tight bounds or closed formulae for the strong metric dimension of the Cartesian sum of graphs in terms of the strong metric dimension, cliq…
An ordered graph $G_<$ is a graph with a total ordering $<$ on its vertex set. A monotone path of length $k$ is a sequence of vertices $v_1<v_2<\ldots<v_k$ such that $v_iv_{j}$ is an edge of $G_<$ if and only if $|j-i|=1$. A bi-clique of size $m$ is a complete bipartite graph whose vertex classes are of size $m$. We prove that for every positive integer $k$, there exists a constant $c_k>0$ such that every ordered graph on $n$ vertices that does not contain a monotone path of length $k$ as an induced subgraph has a vertex of degree at least $c_kn$, or its complement has a bi-clique of size at l…
Let $G$ be a finite abelian group of order $n$. For any subset $B$ of $G$ with $B=-B$, the Cayley graph $G_B$ is a graph on vertex set $G$ in which $ij$ is an edge if and only if $i-j\in B.$ It was shown by Ben Green that when $G$ is a vector space over a finite field $Z/pZ$, then there is a Cayley graph containing neither a complete subgraph nor an independent set of size more than $clog nloglog n,$ where $c$ is an absolute constant. In this article we observe that a modification of his arguments shows that for an arbitrary finite abelian group of order $n$, there is a Cayley graph containing…
We show that a graph $G$ has a normal spanning tree if and only if its vertex set is the union of countably many sets each separated from any subdivided infinite clique in $G$ by a finite set of vertices. This proves a conjecture by Brochet and Diestel from 1994, giving a common strengthening of two classical normal spanning tree criterions due to Jung and Halin. Moreover, our method gives a new, algorithmic proof of Halin's theorem that every connected graph not containing a subdivision of a countable clique has a normal spanning tree.
We study the relationship between the eternal domination number of a graph and its clique covering number using both large-scale computation and analytic methods. In doing so, we answer two open questions of Klostermeyer and Mynhardt. We show that the smallest graph having its eternal domination number less than its clique covering number has $10$ vertices. We determine the complete set of $10$-vertex and $11$-vertex graphs having eternal domination numbers less than their clique covering numbers. We show that the smallest triangle-free graph with this property has order $13$, as does the smal…
Given a graph $G$ and a constant $γ\in [0,1]$, let $ω^{(γ)}(G)$ be the largest integer $r$ such that there exists an $r$-vertex subgraph of $G$ containing at least $γ\binom{r}{2}$ edges. It was recently shown that $ω^{(γ)}(G)$ is highly concentrated when $G$ is an Erdős-Rényi random graph (Balister, Bollobás, Sahasrabudhe, Veremyev, 2019). This paper provides a simple method to extend that result to a setting of inhomogeneous random graphs, showing that $ω^{(γ)}(G)$ remains concentrated on a small range of values even if $G$ is an inhomogeneous random graph. Furthermore, we give an explicit ex…
Let $F_k$ denote the $k$-fan consisting of $k$ triangles which intersect in exactly one common vertex, and $S_{n,k}$ the complete split graph of order $n$ consisting of a clique on $k$ vertices and an independent set on the remaining vertices in which each vertex of the clique is adjacent to each vertex of the independent set. In this paper, it is shown that $S_{n,k}$ is the unique graph attaining the maximum signless Laplacian spectral radius among all graphs of order $n$ containing no $F_k$, provided that $k\geq 2$ and $n\geq 3k^2-k-2$.
The concept of a $1$-rotational factorization of a complete graph under a finite group $G$ was studied in detail by Buratti and Rinaldi. They found that if $G$ admits a $1$-rotational $2$-factorization, then the involutions of $G$ are pairwise conjugate. We extend their result by showing that if a finite group $G$ admits a $1$-rotational $k=2^nm$-factorization where $n\geq 1$, and $m$ is odd, then $G$ has at most $m(2^n-1)$ conjugacy classes containing involutions. Also, we show that if $G$ has exactly $m(2^n-1)$ conjugacy classes containing involutions, then the product of a central involutio…
Explicit construction of Ramsey graphs has remained a challenging open problem for a long time. Frankl--Wilson \cite{FW}, Alon \cite{A} and Grolmusz \cite{G2} gave the best explicit constructions of graphs on $m$ vertices with no clique or independent set of size $m^{(1+o(1))\frac{1}{4}\frac{\log m}{\log \log m}}$. We describe here an explicit construction which produces for every integer $m>1$ a graph on at least $m^{(1+o(1))\frac{1}{3}\frac{\log m}{\log \log m}}$ vertices containing neither a clique of size $m$ nor an independent set of size $m$. In the proof we use the polynomial subspace m…
A Neumaier graph is a non-complete edge-regular graph containing a regular clique. In this paper we give some sufficient and necessary conditions for a Neumaier graph to be strongly regular. Further we show that there does not exist Neumaier graphs with exactly four distinct eigenvalues. We also determine the Neumaier graphs with smallest eigenvalue -2.
The cochromatic number $Z(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the fewest number of colors needed to color the vertices of $G$ so that each color class is a clique or an independent set. In a fractional cocoloring of $G$ a non-negative weight is assigned to each clique and independent set so that for each vertex $v$, the sum of the weights of all cliques and independent sets containing $v$ is at least one. The smallest total weight of such a fractional cocoloring of $G$ is the fractional cochromatic number $Z_f(G)$. In this paper we prove results for the fractional cochromatic number $Z_f(G)$ that parallel r…
Inspired by a question of Yannakakis on the Vertex Packing polytope of perfect graphs, we study the Clique-Stable Set Separation in a non-hereditary subclass of perfect graphs. A cut (B,W) of G (a bipartition of V(G)) separates a clique K and a stable set S if $K\subseteq B$ and $S\subseteq W$. A Clique-Stable Set Separator is a family of cuts such that for every clique K, and for every stable set S disjoint from K, there exists a cut in the family that separates K and S. Given a class of graphs, the question is to know whether every graph of the class admits a Clique-Stable Set Separator cont…
In 1985, Razborov discovered a proof that the monotone circuit complexity of the clique problem is super-polynomial. Alon and Boppana improved the result into exponential lower bound exp(Ω(n / \log n)^{1/3})) of a monotone circuit C to compute cliques of size (1/4) (n / log n)^{2/3}, where n is the number of vertices in a graph. Both proofs are based on the method of approximations and Erdos and Rado's sunflower lemma. There has been an interest in further generalization of the proof scheme. In this paper, we present a new approach to show the exponential monotone complexity. Unlike the standa…
Confirming a conjecture of Vera T. Sós in a very strong sense, we give a complete solution to Turán's hypergraph problem for the Fano plane. That is we prove for $n\ge 8$ that among all $3$-uniform hypergraphs on $n$ vertices not containing the Fano plane there is indeed exactly one whose number of edges is maximal, namely the balanced, complete, bipartite hypergraph. Moreover, for $n=7$ there is exactly one other extremal configuration with the same number of edges: the hypergraph arising from a clique of order $7$ by removing all five edges containing a fixed pair of vertices. For sufficient…
A Neumaier graph is a non-complete edge-regular graph containing a regular clique. A Neumaier graph that is not strongly regular is called a strictly Neumaier graph. In this work we present a new construction of strictly Neumaier graphs, and using Jacobi sums, we show that our construction produces infinitely many instances. Moreover, we prove some necessary conditions for the existence of (strictly) Neumaier graphs that allow us to show that several parameter sets are not admissible.
We investigate monotone circuits with local oracles [K., 2016], i.e., circuits containing additional inputs $y_i = y_i(\vec{x})$ that can perform unstructured computations on the input string $\vec{x}$. Let $μ\in [0,1]$ be the locality of the circuit, a parameter that bounds the combined strength of the oracle functions $y_i(\vec{x})$, and $U_{n,k}, V_{n,k} \subseteq \{0,1\}^m$ be the set of $k$-cliques and the set of complete $(k-1)$-partite graphs, respectively (similarly to [Razborov, 1985]). Our results can be informally stated as follows. 1. For an appropriate extension of depth-$2$ monot…
We give a structural description of the class $\cal C$ of graphs that do not contain a cycle with a unique chord as an induced subgraph. Our main theorem states that any connected graph in $\cal C$ is either in some simple basic class or has a decomposition. Basic classes are chordless cycles, cliques, bipartite graphs with one side containing only nodes of degree two and induced subgraphs of the famous Heawood or Petersen graph. Decompositions are node cutsets consisting of one or two nodes and edge cutsets called 1-joins. Our decomposition theorem actually gives a complete structure theorem …
The Turán number of a graph $H$, $\text{ex}(n,H)$, is the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex graph that does not contain $H$ as a subgraph. For a vertex $v$ and a multi-set $\mathcal{F}$ of graphs, the suspension $\mathcal{F}+v$ of $\mathcal{F}$ is the graph obtained by connecting the vertex $v$ to all vertices of $F$ for each $F\in \mathcal{F}$. For two integers $k\ge1$ and $r\ge2$, let $H_i$ be a graph containing a critical edge with chromatic number $r$ for any $i\in\{1,\ldots,k\}$, and let $H=\{H_1,\ldots,H_k\}+v$. In this paper, we determine $\text{ex}(n, H)$ and characterize all th…
Given a graph $F$ and an integer $r \ge 2$, a partition $\widehat{F}$ of the edge set of $F$ into at most $r$ classes, and a graph $G$, define $c_{r, \widehat{F}}(G)$ as the number of $r$-colorings of the edges of $G$ that do not contain a copy of $F$ such that the edge partition induced by the coloring is isomorphic to the one of $F$. We think of $\widehat{F}$ as the pattern of coloring that should be avoided. The main question is, for a large enough $n$, to find the (extremal) graph $G$ on $n$ vertices which maximizes $c_{r, \widehat{F}}(G)$. This problem generalizes a question of Erd{\H o}s…
