We analyze the geometry of the generalized Pauli channels constructed from the mutually unbiased bases. The Choi-Jamiołkowski isomorphism allows us to express the Hilbert-Schmidt line and volume elements in terms of the eigenvalues of the generalized Pauli maps. After determining appropriate regions of integration, we analytically compute the volume of generalized Pauli channels and their important subclasses. In particular, we obtain the volumes of the generalized Pauli channels that can be generated by a legitimate generator and are entanglement breaking. We also provide the upper bound for the volume of positive, trace-preserving generalized Pauli maps.
We analyze the geometrical properties of trace-preserving Pauli maps. Using the Choi-Jamio\lkowski isomorphism, we express the Hilbert-Schmidt line and volume elements in terms of the eigenvalues of the Pauli map. We analytically compute the volumes of positive, trace-preserving Pauli maps and Pauli channels. In particular, we find the relative volumes of the entanglement breaking Pauli channels, as well as the channels that can be generated by a time-local generator. Finally, we show what part of the Pauli channels are P and CP-divisible, which is related to the notion of Markovianity.
We analyze the geometry of positive and completely positive, trace preserving Pauli maps that are fully determined by up to two distinct parameters. This includes five classes of symmetric and non-invertible Pauli channels. Using the Hilbert-Schmidt metric in the space of the Choi-Jamio\lkowski states, we compute the relative volumes of entanglement breaking, time-local generated, and divisible channels. Finally, we find the shapes of the complete positivity regions in relation to the tetrahedron of all Pauli channels.
We consider the asymptotic regularization of the maximal fidelity for the generalized Pauli channels, which is a problem similar to the classical channel capacity. In particular, we find the formulas for the extremal channel fidelities and the maximal output $\infty$-norm. For wide classes of channels, we show that these quantities are multiplicative. Finally, we find the regularized maximal fidelity for the channels satisfying the time-local master eqeuations.
The commutation relations of the generalized Pauli operators of a qubit-qutrit system are discussed in the newly established graph-theoretic and finite-geometrical settings. The dual of the Pauli graph of this system is found to be isomorphic to the projective line over the product ring Z2xZ3. A "peculiar" feature in comparison with two-qubits is that two distinct points/operators can be joined by more than one line. The multi-line property is shown to be also present in the graphs/geometries characterizing two-qutrit and three-qubit Pauli operators' space and surmised to be exhibited by any o…
A set of generators of generalized Pauli matrices play a crucial role in quantum computation based on n level systems of an atom. In this paper we show how to construct them by making use of Rabi oscillations. We also construct the generalized Walsh-Hadamard matrix in the case of three level systems and present some related problems.
We demonstrate that neutral Dirac particles in external electric fields, which are equivalent to generalized Dirac oscillators, are physical examples of quasi-exactly solvable systems. Electric field configurations permitting quasi-exact solvability of the system based on the $sl(2)$ symmetry are discussed separately in spherical, cylindrical, and Cartesian coordinates. Some exactly solvable field configurations are also exhibited.
We propose a parameter estimation protocol for generalized Pauli channels acting on $d$-dimensional Hilbert space. The salient features of the proposed method include product probe states and measurements, the number of measurement configurations linear in $d$, minimal post-processing, and the scaling of the mean square error comparable to that of the entanglement-based parameter estimation scheme for generalized Pauli channels. We also show that while measuring generalized Pauli operators the errors caused by the Pauli noise can be modeled as measurement errors. This makes it possible to util…
We analyze the quantum evolution represented by a time-dependent family of generalized Pauli channels. This evolution is provided by the random decoherence channels with respect to the maximal number of mutually unbiased bases. We derive the necessary and sufficient conditions for the vanishing back-flow of information.
The commutation relations between the generalized Pauli operators of N-qudits (i. e., N p-level quantum systems), and the structure of their maximal sets of commuting bases, follow a nice graph theoretical/geometrical pattern. One may identify vertices/points with the operators so that edges/lines join commuting pairs of them to form the so-called Pauli graph P_{p^N} . As per two-qubits (p = 2, N = 2) all basic properties and partitionings of this graph are embodied in the geometry of the symplectic generalized quadrangle of order two, W(2). The structure of the two-qutrit (p = 3, N = 2) graph…
A comprehensive graph theoretical and finite geometrical study of the commutation relations between the generalized Pauli operators of N-qudits is performed in which vertices/points correspond to the operators and edges/lines join commuting pairs of them. As per two-qubits, all basic properties and partitionings of the corresponding Pauli graph are embodied in the geometry of the generalized quadrangle of order two. Here, one identifies the operators with the points of the quadrangle and groups of maximally commuting subsets of the operators with the lines of the quadrangle. The three basic pa…
We analyze the fidelity of the generalized Pauli channels governed by memory kernel master equations. It is shown that, by appropriate engineering of parameters of the corresponding memory kernel, the quantum evolution with non-local noise can have higher fidelity than the corresponding purely Markovian evolution governed by the Markovian semigroup. Similar engineering can substantially influence the evolution of quantum entanglement, entropy, and quantum coherence.
Finite-time Markovian channels, unlike their infinitesimal counterparts, do not form a convex set. As a particular instance of this observation, we consider the problem of mixing the three Pauli channels, conservatively assumed to be quantum dynamical semigroups, and fully characterize the resulting ``Pauli simplex.'' We show that neither the set of non-Markovian (completely positive indivisible) nor Markovian channels is convex in the Pauli simplex, and that the measure of non-Markovian channels is about 0.87. All channels in the Pauli simplex are P divisible. A potential application in the c…
"What are the consequences ... that Fermi particles cannot get into the same state ... " R. P. Feynman wrote of the Pauli exclusion principle, "In fact, almost all the peculiarities of the material world hinge on this wonderful fact." In 1972 Borland and Dennis showed that there exist powerful constraints beyond the Pauli exclusion principle on the orbital occupations of Fermi particles, providing important restrictions on quantum correlation and entanglement. Here we use computations on quantum computers to experimentally verify the existence of these additional constraints. Quantum many-ferm…
In this paper, we analyze the evolution of the generalized Pauli channels governed by the memory kernel master equation. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the memory kernel to give rise to the legitimate (completely positive and trace-preserving) quantum evolution. In particular, we analyze a class of kernels generating the quantum semi-Markov evolution, which is a natural generalization of the Markovian semigroup. Interestingly, the convex combination of Markovian semigroups goes beyond the semi-Markov case. Our analysis is illustrated with several examples.

Study of the normalizer of the MAD-group corresponding to a finegrading offers the most important tool for describing symmetries in the system of non-linear equations connected with contraction of a Lie algebra. One fine grading that is always present in any Lie algebra $sl(n,\mathbb{C})$ is the Pauli grading. The MAD-group corresponding to it is generated by generalized Pauli matrices. For such MAD-group, we already know its normalizer; its quotient group is isomorphic to the Lie group $Sl(2,\mathbb{Z}_n)\times v\mathbb{Z}_2$. In this paper, we deal with a more complicated situation, namely t…
It is important for performance studies in quantum technologies to analyze quantum circuits in the presence of noise. We introduce an error probability tensor, a tool to track generalized Pauli error statistics of qudits within quantum circuits composed of qudit Clifford gates. Our framework is compatible with qudit stabilizer quantum error-correcting codes. We show how the error probability tensor can be applied in the most general case, and we demonstrate an error analysis of bipartite qudit repeaters with quantum error correction. We provide an exact analytical solution of the error statist…
By analyzing the Dirac equation with static electric and magnetic fields it is shown that Dirac's theory is nothing but a generalized one-particle quantum theory compatible with the special theory of relativity. This equation describes a {\it quantum} dynamics of a {\it single} relativistic fermion, and its solution is reduced to solution of the generalized Pauli equation for two quasiparticles which move in the Euclidean space with their effective masses holding information about the Lorentzian symmetry of the four-dimensional space-time. We reveal the correspondence between the Dirac bispino…
The parentage between Weyl pairs, generalized Pauli group and unitary group is investigated in detail. We start from an abstract definition of the Heisenberg-Weyl group on the field R and then switch to the discrete Heisenberg-Weyl group or generalized Pauli group on a finite ring Z_d. The main characteristics of the latter group, an abstract group of order d**3 noted P_d, are given (conjugacy classes and irreducible representation classes or equivalently Lie algebra of dimension d**3 associated with P_d). Leaving the abstract sector, a set of Weyl pairs in dimension d is derived from a polar …
Following the spirit of a recent work of one of the authors (J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 44 (2011) 045301), the essential structure of the generalized Pauli group of a qubit-qu$d$it, where $d = 2^{k}$ and an integer $k \geq 2$, is recast in the language of a finite geometry. A point of such geometry is represented by the maximum set of mutually commuting elements of the group and two distinct points are regarded as collinear if the corresponding sets have exactly $2^{k} - 1$ elements in common. The geometry comprises $2^{k} - 1$ copies of the generalized quadrangle of order two ("the doily") that…
We exhibit an infinite family of {\it triplets} of mutually unbiased bases (MUBs) in dimension 6. These triplets involve the Fourier family of Hadamard matrices, $F(a,b)$. However, in the main result of the paper we also prove that for any values of the parameters $(a,b)$, the standard basis and $F(a,b)$ {\it cannot be extended to a MUB-quartet}. The main novelty lies in the {\it method} of proof which may successfully be applied in the future to prove that the maximal number of MUBs in dimension 6 is three.
The dependence of the (quasi-)saturation of the generalized Pauli constraints on the pair potential is studied for ground states of few-fermion systems. For this, we consider spinless fermions in one dimension which are harmonically confined and interact by pair potentials of the form $|x_i-x_j|^s$ with $-1 \leq s\leq 5$. We use the Density Matrix Renormalization Group approach and large orbital basis to achieve the convergence on more than ten digits of both the variational energy and the natural occupation numbers. Our results confirm that the conflict between energy minimization and fermion…
The construction of unitary operator bases in a finite-dimensional Hilbert space is reviewed through a nonstandard approach combinining angular momentum theory and representation theory of SU(2). A single formula for the bases is obtained from a polar decomposition of SU(2) and analysed in terms of cyclic groups, quadratic Fourier transforms, Hadamard matrices and generalized Gauss sums. Weyl pairs, generalized Pauli operators and their application to the unitary group and the Pauli group naturally arise in this approach.
In this chapter a quantum communication protocol with use of repeaters is presented. The protocol is constructed for qudits i.e. the generalized quantum information units. One-dit teleportation is based on the generalized Pauli-Z (phase-flip) gate's correction. This approach avoids using Pauli-X and Hadamard gates unlike in other known protocols based on quantum repeaters which were constructed for qubits and qudits. It is also important to mention that the repeaters based on teleportation protocol, described in this chapter, allow a measurement in the standard base (what simplifies the measur…
The natural occupation numbers of fermionic systems are subject to non-trivial constraints, which include and extend the original Pauli principle. A recent mathematical breakthrough has clarified their mathematical structure and has opened up the possibility of a systematic analysis. Early investigations have found evidence that these constraints are exactly saturated in several physically relevant systems, e.g., in a certain electronic state of the Beryllium atom. It has been suggested that in such cases, the constraints, rather than the details of the Hamiltonian, dictate the system's qualit…
The optimal measurement configuration, i.e., the optimal input quantum state and measurement in the form of a POVM with two elements, is investigated in this paper for qubit and generalized Pauli channels. The channel directions are defined as the contracting directions of the channel with an arbitrary fixed basis of Pauli- matrices. In the qubit Pauli channel case with known channel directions it is shown that the optimal configuration that maximizes the Fisher information of the estimated parameters consists of three von Neumann measurements together with pure input states directed to the ap…
Effective spin-spin interactions between N+1 qubits enable the determination of the eigenvalue of an arbitrary Pauli product of dimension N with a constant, small number of multi-qubit gates that is independent of N and encodes the eigenvalue in the measurement basis states of an extra ancilla qubit. Such interactions are available whenever qubits can be coupled to a shared harmonic oscillator, a situation that can be realized in several physical qubit implementations. For example, suitable interactions have already been realized for up to 14 qubits in ion traps. It should be possible to imple…
A unified framework is proposed in this paper for parameter estimation using convex optimization and experiment design applying convex maximization for Pauli channels, that can be extended to generalized Pauli channels, too. In the case of known channel directions, an affine parametrization of the Choi matrix turns the LS parameter estimation into a convex optimization problem also for the generalized Pauli channels. A simple iterative algorithm for estimating the channel directions is also given for qubit Pauli channels. The experiment design was performed by maximizing the trace of the Fishe…
The finite entropy of black holes suggests that local regions of spacetime are described by finite-dimensional factors of Hilbert space, in contrast with the infinite-dimensional Hilbert spaces of quantum field theory. With this in mind, we explore how to cast finite-dimensional quantum mechanics in a form that matches naturally onto the smooth case, especially the recovery of conjugate position/momentum variables, in the limit of large Hilbert-space dimension. A natural tool for this task are the Generalized Pauli operators (GPO). Based on an exponential form of Heisenberg's canonical commuta…

One of the main problems in quantum information systems is the presence of errors due to noise, and for this reason quantum error-correcting codes (QECCs) play a key role. While most of the known codes are designed for correcting generic errors, i.e., errors represented by arbitrary combinations of Pauli X , Y and Z operators, in this paper we investigate the design of stabilizer QECC able to correct a given number eg of generic Pauli errors, plus eZ Pauli errors of a specified type, e.g., Z errors. These codes can be of interest when the quantum channel is asymmetric in that some types of err…
We have explained and comprehensively illustrated in Part I that the generalized Pauli constraints suggest a natural extension of the concept of active spaces. In the present Part II, we provide rigorous derivations of the theorems involved therein. This will offer in particular deeper insights into the underlying mathematical structure and will explain why the saturation of generalized Pauli constraints implies a specific simplified structure of the corresponding many-fermion quantum state. Moreover, we extend the results of Part I to non-fermionic multipartite quantum systems, revealing that…
We study the memory property of the channels obtained by convex combinations of Markovian channels that are not necessarily quantum dynamical semigroups (QDSs). In particular, we characterize the geometry of the region of (non-)Markovian channels obtained by the convex combination of the three Pauli channels, as a function of deviation from the semigroup form in a family of channels. The regions are highly convex, and interestingly, the measure of the non-Markovian region shrinks with greater deviation from the QDS structure for the considered family, underscoring the counterintuitive nature o…
Fermionic natural occupation numbers (NON) do not only obey Pauli's famous exclusion principle but are even further restricted to a polytope by the generalized Pauli constraints, conditions which follow from the fermionic exchange statistics. Whenever given NON are pinned to the polytope's boundary the corresponding $N$-fermion quantum state $|Ψ_N\rangle$ simplifies due to a selection rule. We show analytically and numerically for the most relevant settings that this rule is stable for NON close to the boundary, if the NON are non-degenerate. In case of degeneracy a modified selection rule is …

Symmetry adapted bases in quantum chemistry and bases adapted to quantum information share a common characteristics: both of them are constructed from subspaces of the representation space of the group SO(3) or its double group (i.e., spinor group) SU(2). We exploit this fact for generating spin bases of relevance for quantum systems with cyclic symmetry and equally well for quantum information and quantum computation. Our approach is based on the use of generalized Pauli matrices arising from a polar decomposition of SU(2). This approach leads to a complete solution for the construction of mu…
We study the conditions under which a semigroup is obtained upon convex combinations of channels. In particular, we study the set of Pauli and generalized Pauli channels. We find that mixing only semigroups can never produce a semigroup. Counter-intuitively, we find that for a convex combination to yield a semigroup, most of the input channels have to be noninvertible.
We describe the structure of the extended Clifford Group (defined to be the group consisting of all operators, unitary and anti-unitary, which normalize the generalized Pauli group (or Weyl-Heisenberg group as it is often called)). We also obtain a number of results concerning the structure of the Clifford Group proper (i.e. the group consisting just of the unitary operators which normalize the generalized Pauli group). We then investigate the action of the extended Clifford group operators on symmetric informationally complete POVMs (or SIC-POVMs) covariant relative to the action of the gener…
A generalized depolarizing channel acts on an N-dimensional quantum system to compress the ``Bloch ball'' in N^2-1 directions; it has a corresponding compression vector. We investigate the geometry of these compression vectors and prove a conjecture of Dixit and Sudarshan [1], namely that when N=2^d (i.e. the system consists of d qubits) and we work in the Pauli basis then the set of all compression vectors forms a simplex. We extend this result by investigating the geometry in other bases; in particular we find precisely when the set of all compression vectors forms a simplex.
The performance of quantum error correction can be significantly improved if detailed information about the noise is available, allowing to optimize both codes and decoders. It has been proposed to estimate error rates from the syndrome measurements done anyway during quantum error correction. While these measurements preserve the encoded quantum state, it is currently not clear how much information about the noise can be extracted in this way. So far, apart from the limit of vanishing error rates, rigorous results have only been established for some specific codes. In this work, we rigorously…
We present a characterization of states in generalized probabilistic models by appealing to a non-commutative version of geometric probability theory based on algebraic geometry techniques. Our theoretical framework allows for incorporation of invariant states in a natural way.
