Polycrystalline ceramic samples and a single crystal of EuTiO3 have been investigated by Raman spectroscopy in the temperature range 80-300 K. Although synchrotron XRD data clearly indicated the cubic to tetragonal phase transition around 282 K, no mode from the symmetry allowed Raman active phonons was found in the tetragonal phase, contrary to the case of the homologous SrTiO3. In order to study the evolution of this unique characteristic, ceramics of EuxSr1-xTiO3 (x=0.03-1.0) characterized by synchrotron XRD for the structural phase transition have been also investigated by Raman spectroscopy, verifying the very strong influence on the Raman yield by Eu substitution. By applying an external magnetic field or alternatively hydrostatic pressure modes are activated in the Raman spectra. The temperature dependence of the main mode that is activated shows remarkable agreement with theoretical predictions. We attribute the puzzling absence of the Raman modes to a mechanism related to strong spin-lattice interaction that drives the cubic to tetragonal structural phase transition and makes the Raman tensor antisymmetric. On the contrary, the external perturbations induce a symmetric Raman tensor allowing even symmetry modes to be present in the spectra. Previous EPR, muon scattering and magnetic measurements indicated the presence of small magnetic interactions deep inside the paramagnetic phase. In order to probe those magnetic interactions in our EuTiO3 polycrystalline sample and test our hypothesis, we have performed temperature dependant XAS/XMCD, which support the existence of magnetic nanodomains even close to room temperature.
The weakly screened electron-hole interactions in an atomically thin semiconductor not only downshift its excitation spectrum from a quasiparticle one, but also redistribute excitation energies and wavefunction characters with profound effects on diverse modes of material response, including the exciton-phonon scattering processes accessible to resonant Raman measurements. Here we develop a first-principles framework to calculate frequency-dependent resonant Raman intensities that includes excitonic effects and goes beyond the Placzek approximation. We show how excitonic effects in MoS2 strong…
The appearance of a broad peak at $\sim$1550 cm$^{-1}$ (G$^{-}$ peak) in carbon nanotube resonant Raman scattering spectra has been conventionally attributed to the presence of metallic nanotubes. Here, we present resonant Raman measurements on macroscopic nanotube ensembles enriched in armchair species prepared through density gradient ultracentrifugation. Our data clearly demonstrate that the broad G$^{-}$ mode is absent for armchair structures and appears only when the excitation laser is resonant with non-armchair "metals." Due to the large number ($\sim$10$^{10}$) of nanotubes across seve…
Lattice structure and symmetry of two-dimensional (2D) layered materials are of key importance to their fundamental mechanical, thermal, electronic and optical properties. Raman spectroscopy, as a convenient and nondestructive tool, however has its limitations on identifying all symmetry allowing Raman modes and determining the corresponding crystal structure of 2D layered materials with high symmetry like graphene and MoS2. Due to lower structural symmetry and extraordinary weak interlayer coupling of ReS2, we successfully identified all 18 first-order Raman active modes for bulk and monolaye…
Contrary to a broadly accepted assumption we show that random (Ga,In)P is not an exception with respect to the crude classification of the phonon mode behavior of random mixed crystals in terms of 1-bond->1-mode systems or 2-bond->1-mode systems, as established from the simple criterion derived by Elliott et al. [Rev.Mod.Phys. 46, 465 (1974)]. Consistent understanding of the puzzling Raman/infrared behavior of (Ga,In)P, that has been a subject of controversy, is achieved via a basic version of our 1-bond->2-mode model. The Raman/infrared features from (Ga,In)P are accordingly re-assigned, with…
We report a temperature-dependent Raman scattering investigation of DyScO3 and GdScO3 single crystals from room temperature up to 1200 °C. With increasing temperature, all modes decrease monotonously in wavenumber without anomaly, which attests the absence of a structural phase transition. The high temperature spectral signature and extrapolation of band positions to higher temperatures suggest a decreasing orthorhombic distortion towards the ideal cubic structure. Our study indicates that this orthorhombic-to-cubic phase transition is close to or higher than the melting point of both rare-ear…
It has been puzzling that the Raman optical modes shift to lower frequency (or termed as optical mode softening) associated with creation of Raman acoustic modes that shift to higher energy (or called as acoustic hardening) upon nanosolid formation and size reduction. Understandings of the mechanism behind the size-induced acoustic hardening and optic softening have been quite controversial. On the basis of the recent bond order-length-strength (BOLS) correlation [Phys. Rev. B 69 045105 (2004)], we show that the optical softening arises from atomic cohesive energy weakening of surface atoms an…
GeCo$_2$O$_4$ is a unique system in the family of cobalt spinels ACo$_2$O$_4$ (A= Sn, Ti, Ru, Mn, Al, Zn, Fe, etc.) in which magnetic Co ions stabilize on the pyrochlore lattice exhibiting a large degree of orbital frustration. Due to the complexity of the low-temperature antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering and long-range magnetic exchange interactions, the lattice dynamics and magnetic structure of GeCo$_2$O$_4$ spinel has remained puzzling. To address this issue, here we present theoretical and experimental investigations of the highly frustrated magnetic structure, and the infrared (IR) and Ra…
LiOsO$_3$ is the first experimentally confirmed polar metal with ferroelectric-like distortion. One puzzling experimental fact is its paramagnetic state down to very low temperature with negligible magnetic moment, which is anomalous considering its $5d^3$ electron configuration since other osmium oxides (e.g. NaOsO$_3$) with $5d^3$ Os ions are magnetic. Here the magnetic and electronic properties of LiOsO$_3$ are re-investigated carefully using the first-principles density functional theory. Our calculations reveal that the magnetic state of LiOsO$_3$ can be completely suppressed by the spin-…
Though graphene has been intensively studied by Raman spectroscopy, in this letter, we report a study of second-order overtone and combinational Raman modes in an unexplored range of 1690-2150 cm-1 in nonsuspended commensurate (AB-stacked), incommensurate (folded) and suspended graphene layers. Based on the double resonance theory, four dominant modes in this range have been assigned as 2oTO (M band), iTA+LO, iTO+LA and LO+LA. Differing to AB-stacked bilayer graphene or few layer graphene, the M band disappears in single layer graphene. Systematic analysis reveals that interlayer interaction i…
A Raman spectroscopy study was carried out for ZnGeN2 with direction of propagation along the (0001) crystallographic direction on hexagonal single crystal platelets obtained by reaction of gaseous ammonia with a Zn-Ge-Sn liquid alloy at 758 degree C. The sample geometry allowed measurement of the a2 and a1 Raman modes. First-principles calculations were carried out of the spectra. Measurements with crossed polarizers yielded spectra that agreed well with first-principles calculations of the a2 modes. Measurements with parallel polarizers should in principle provide the a1L modes. However, for…
Polarized Raman scattering spectra of the K_xCo_{2-y}Se_2 single crystals reveal the presence of two phonon modes, assigned as of the A_{1g} and B_{1g} symmetry. Absence of additional modes excludes the possibility of vacancy ordering, unlike in K_xFe_{2-y}Se_2. The ferromagnetic (FM) phase transition at T_c\approx 74 K leaves a clear fingerprint on the temperature dependence of the Raman mode energy and linewidth. For T>T_c the temperature dependence looks conventional, driven by the thermal expansion and anharmonicity. The Raman modes are rather broad due to the electron-phonon coupling incr…
We report two new first-order Raman modes in the spectra of few-layer MoS$_2$ at 286~cm$^{-1}$ and 471~cm$^{-1}$ for excitation energies above 2.4~eV. These modes appear only in few-layer MoS$_2$; therefore their absence provides an easy and accurate method to identify single-layer MoS$_2$. We show that these modes are related to phonons that are not observed in the single layer due to their symmetry. Each of these phonons leads to several nearly degenerate phonons in few-layer samples. The nearly degenerate phonons in few-layer materials belong to two different symmetry representations, showi…
The vibrational spectroscopy of semiconductor nanostructures can provide important information on their structure. In this work, experimental Raman and infrared spectra are compared with vibrational spectra of CdSe/CdS core/shell nanoplatelets calculated from first principles using the density functional theory. The calculations confirm the two-mode behavior of phonon spectra of nanostructures. An analysis of the experimental spectra reveals the absence of modes with a high amplitude of vibrations of surface atoms, which indicates their strong damping. Taking into account the difference in the…
We present an investigation of charge-compensated antiferromagnetic (Ca$_{x}$La$_{1-x}$)(Ba$_{1.75-x}$La$_{0.25+x}$)Cu$_{3}$O$_{y}$ single crystals using Raman scattering as well as muon spin rotation. In this system the parameter $x$ controls the Cu-O-Cu superexchange interaction via bond distances and buckling angles. The oxygen content $y$ controls the charge doping. In the absence of doping the two-magnon peak position is directly proportional to the superexchange strength $J$. We find that both $x$ and $y$ affect the peak position considerably. The Néel temperature determined from muon sp…
The Raman selection rules of the (ZnSe, BeSe) mixed phonon polariton created by alloying in the three mode (1ZnSe, 2BeSe) ZnBeSe system, whose dramatic S like dispersion covers the large frequency gap between the ZnSe and BeSe spectral ranges, is studied in its wave vector dependence by near forward scattering. Both the collapse regime away from the Brillouin zone centre and the reinforcement regime near the Brillouin zone centre are addressed, using appropriate laser lines and Be contents. We find that in both regimes the considered phonon polariton, in fact a transverse mode with mixed mecha…

Two new phases of hydrogen have been discovered at room temperature in Ref.1: phase IV above 220 GPa and phase V above ~270 GPa. In the present work we have found a new phase VI at P~360 GPa and T<200 K. This phase is likely metallic as follows from the featureless Raman spectra, a strong drop in resistance, and absence of a photoconductive response. We studied hydrogen at low temperatures with the aid of Raman, infrared absorption, and electrical measurements at pressures up to 380 GPa, and have built a new phase diagram of hydrogen.
We performed factor-group analysis of all phonons in possible monoclinic C2/c and C2 structures of BiMnO3 and compared it with our experimental infrared and Raman spectra. We conclude that the crystal structure is centrosymmetric C2/c in the whole investigated temperature range from 10 to 550 K, therefore BiMnO3 cannot be ferroelectric. We revealed a dielectric relaxation in THz spectra above the structural phase transition taking place at T_C1=475 K giving evidence in strong lattice anharmonicity and a large dynamical disorder of Bi cations above T_C1. Step-like dielectric anomaly observed at…
Raman signatures of the strong intra- and inter-molecular charge oscillations in bis(ethylenedithio)-tetrathiafulvalene (BEDT-TTF) \k{appa}-phase salts
BaTiO3 is a classical ferroelectric studied for last one century for its ferroelectric properties. Lattice dynamics of BaTiO3 is crucial as the utility of devices is governed by phonons. In this work, we show that traditional characterization of the polar phonon modes is ambiguous and often misinterpreted. By combining Raman, Neutron and X-ray diffraction, dielectric spectroscopic observations with first principle calculations, we have re-examined the character of the normal modes of phonons of BaTiO3. We obtained Eigen displacements of vibrational modes through DFT calculations and reclassifi…
The puzzling absence of Pu magnetic moments in a PuAm environment is explored using the self-consistent Dynamical Mean Field Theory (DMFT) calculations in combination with the Local Density Approximation. We argue that delta-Pu -Am alloys provide an ideal test bed for investigating the screening of moments from the single impurity limit to the dense limit. Several important effects can be studied: volume expansion, shift of the bare Pu on-site f energy level, and the reduction of the hybridization cloud resulting from the collective character of the Kondo effect in the Anderson lattice. These …
A new type of the single-molecule magnet [Mn_4 O_3 Cl_4 (O_2 CEt)_3(py)_3] forms dimers. Recent magnetic hysteresis measurements on this single-molecular magnet revealed interesting phenomena: an absence of quantum tunneling at zero magnetic field and tunneling before magnetic field reversal. This is attributed to a significant antiferromagnetic exchange interaction between different monomers. To investigate this system, we calculate the electronic structure, magnetic properties, intramolecular and intermolecular exchange interactions using density-functional theory within the generalized-grad…
We present an angle-resolved photoemission study of the electronic structure of the three-dimensional pyrochlore iridate Nd2Ir2O7 through its magnetic metal-insulator transition. Our data reveal that metallic Nd2Ir2O7 has a quadratic band, touching the Fermi level at the Gamma point, similarly to that of Pr2Ir2O7. The Fermi node state is, therefore, a common feature of the metallic phase of the pyrochlore iridates. Upon cooling below the transition temperature, this compound exhibits a gap opening with an energy shift of quasiparticle peaks like a band gap insulator. The quasiparticle peaks ar…
