In 2010 May, an intermediate luminosity optical transient was discovered in the nearby galaxy NGC 300 by a South African amateur astronomer. In the decade since its discovery, multi-wavelength observations of the misnamed ``SN 2010da'' have continually re-shaped our understanding of this high mass X-ray binary system. In this review, we present an overview of the multi-wavelength observations and attempts to understand the 2010 transient event and, later, the re-classification of this system as NGC~300 ULX-1: a red supergiant + neutron star ultraluminous X-ray source.
We study the optical counterparts of ultraluminous X-ray sources NGC4559 X-10 and NGC4395 ULX-1. Their absolute magnitudes, after taking the reddening into account, are $M_V \approx -5.3$ and $M_V \approx -6.2$, respectively. The spectral energy distribution of the NGC4559 X-10 counterpart is well fitted by a spectrum of an F-type star, whereas NGC4395 ULX-1 has a blue power-law spectrum. Optical spectroscopy of NGC4395 ULX-1 has shown a broad and variable HeII~$λ$4686 emission, which puts this object in line with all the other spectrally-studied ULXs. Using the Swift archival X-ray data for N…
NGC 300 ULX1 is the fourth to be discovered in the class of the ultra-luminous X-ray pulsars. Pulsations from NGC 300 ULX1 were discovered during simultaneous XMM-Newton / NuSTAR observations in Dec. 2016. The period decreased from 31.71 s to 31.54 s within a few days, with a spin-up rate of -5.56 x 10^{-7} s s^{-1}, likely one of the largest ever observed from an accreting neutron star. Archival Swift and NICER observations revealed that the period decreased exponentially from ~45 s to ~17.5 s over 2.3 years. The pulses are highly modulated with a pulsed fraction strongly increasing with ener…
We report X-ray spectral variability in an ultraluminous X-ray source NGC 1042 ULX1, using archival XMM-Newton and recent NuSTAR observations. In long-term evolution, the source has shown a trend of variation in spectral hardness. The variability in different XMM-Newton observations is prominent above $\sim 1$ keV. Cool thermal disk component with a characteristic temperature of $\sim 0.2$ keV manifests that the spectral state of NGC 1042 ULX1 in all epochs is similar to that of the ultraluminous state sources. An apparent anti-correlation between luminosity and powerlaw index demonstrates tha…

We report the discovery of a third ULX in NGC 925 (ULX-3), detected in November 2017 by Chandra at a luminosity of $L_{\rm X} = (7.8\pm0.8)\times10^{39}$ erg s$^{-1}$. Examination of archival data for NGC 925 reveals that ULX-3 was detected by Swift at a similarly high luminosity in 2011, as well as by XMM-Newton in January 2017 at a much lower luminosity of $L_{\rm X} = (3.8\pm0.5)\times10^{38}$ erg s$^{-1}$. With an additional Chandra non-detection in 2005, this object demonstrates a high dynamic range of flux of factor >26. In its high-luminosity detections, ULX-3 exhibits a hard power-law …
We examined the variability of three ultra-luminous X-ray sources (ULXs) in the 2003, 110 ks XMM-Newton observation of NGC253. Remarkably, we discovered ULX1 to be three times more variable than ULX2 in the 0.3--10 keV band, even though ULX2 is brighter. Indeed, ULX1 exhibits a power density spectrum that is consistent with the canonical high state or very high/steep power law state, but not the canonical low state. The 0.3--10 keV emission of ULX1 is predominantly non-thermal, and may be related to the very high state. We also fitted the ULX spectra with disc blackbody, slim disc and convolut…
We report here the discovery of NGC 7793 ULX-4, a new transient ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) in NGC 7793, a spiral galaxy already well known for harbouring several ULXs. This new source underwent an outburst in 2012, when it was detected by \textit{XMM-Newton} and the \textit{Swift} X-ray telescope. The outburst reached a peak luminosity of 3.4$\times 10^{39}$ erg\ s$^{-1}$ and lasted for about 8 months, after which the source went below a luminosity of $10^{37}$ erg\ s$^{-1}$; previous \textit{Chandra} observations constrain the low-state luminosity below $\sim$ 2$\times 10^{36}$ erg\ s$^…
The accreting compact objects in most of ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) are likely to be neutron stars rather than black holes as suggested by the recent detection of periodic pulsations from some of these sources located in neighboring galaxies and one ULX that has hitherto been discovered in our own galaxy. As a member of the ULX family, NGC 300 ULX1 is a new pulsating ULX (PULX) spinning up at substantially high rates compared with other PULXs. In this paper, the strength of the magnetic field on the surface of the neutron star is inferred from the energy of the cyclotron absorption lin…
We report on multiwavelength observations of the supersoft ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) in NGC 247 made with the Chandra X-ray Observatory and Hubble Space Telescope (HST). We aligned the X-ray and optical images using three objects present on both and identified a unique, point-like optical counterpart to the ULX. The X-ray to optical spectrum is well fitted with an irradiated disk model if the extinction measured for Cepheids in NGC 247 is used. Assuming only Galactic extinction, then the spectrum can be modeled as a standard thin accretion disk. Either result leads to the conclusion tha…
In this paper we report on Chandra observations of the starburst galaxy NGC 922. NGC 922 is a drop-through ring galaxy with an expanding ring of star formation, similar in many respects to the Cartwheel galaxy. The Cartwheel galaxy is famous for hosting 12 ULX, most of which are in the star forming ring. This is the largest number of ULX seen in a single system, and has led to speculation that the low metallicity of the Cartwheel (0.3 solar) may optimize the conditions for ULX formation. In contrast, NGC 922 has metallicity near solar. The Chandra observations reveal a population of bright X-r…
In this paper we report accurate Chandra positions for two ultraluminous X-ray sources: NGC 7319-X4 at Right Ascension (RA) = 339.02917(2) deg, Declination (Dec) = 33.97476(2) deg and NGC 5474-X1 at RA = 211.24859(3) deg, Dec = 53.63584(3) deg. We perform bore-sight corrections on the Chandra X-ray Satellite observations of these sources to get to these accurate positions of the X-ray sources and match these positions with archival optical data from the Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 on board the Hubble Space Telescope. We do not find the optical counterparts: the limiting absolute magnitud…
We present the results of high-quality XMM-NEWTON observations of a ULX in the galaxy NGC 4190. The detection of spectral cutoff in NGC 4190 ULX1 spectra rules out the interpretation of the ULX to be in a standard low/hard canonical accretion state. We report that the high quality EPIC spectra can be better described by broad thermal component, such as a slim disk. In addition we found long term spectral and flux variability in the source using several XMM-NEWTON and Swift data. A clear anti-correlation between flux and power-law photon index is found which further confirms the unusual spectra…
NGC 300 ULX1 is a newly identified ultra-luminous X-ray pulsar. The system is associated with the supernova impostor SN 2010da that was later classified as a possible supergiant Be X-ray binary. In this work we report on the spin period evolution of the neutron star based on all the currently available X-ray observations of the system. We argue that the X-ray luminosity of the system has remained almost constant since 2010, at a level above ten times the Eddington limit. Moreover, we find evidence that the spin period of the neutron star evolved from ~126 s down to ~18 s within a period of abo…
The magnetic field of ultraluminous X-ray (ULX) pulsars is the key parameter to understand the nature and accretion physics. However, the typical magnetic field values in these ULX pulsars are still under debate. We used six different torque models to study the magnetic fields of ULX pulsars, to see how derived magnetic fields change with different models, and to determine which models are more suitable for ULX pulsars. We took the currently available period, period derivative, and flux data of 7 confirmed ULX pulsars, M82 X-2, ULX NGC 7793 P13, ULX NGC 5907, NGC 300 ULX1, NGC 1313 X-2, M51 UL…
We present the previously unanalysed high quality XMM-Newton spectrum of an ultraluminous X-ray source candidate in NGC 4517. As with other high quality ULX spectra, a downturn in the spectrum is observed at ~6 keV. Both of the recent disc reflection and Comptonisation interpretations of this feature are applied, in order to present a direct comparison, and are found to provide statistically equivalent representations of the current data. We find that the reflection model requires the accretion disc to have a highly super-solar iron abundance, while the Comptonisation model requires low temper…
We report the first detection of a Fe K$_α$ line and soft X-ray lag in the ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) NGC 7456 ULX-1. The XMM-Newton spectra show the presence of the 6.4 keV Fe line at 2.6$σ$ confidence and an upper limit on the FWHM of 32900 km s$^{-1}$. Assuming that the line arises by reflection from a Keplerian disk, it must originate beyond $85 r_{\rm g}$ from the compact object. As a result of Fourier timing analysis we found that the soft X-ray photons lag behind the hard X-ray photons with a $\sim$1300 s delay. The covariance spectra indicate that the hard spectral component is r…
We have identified three ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) hosted by globular clusters (GCs) within NGC 1316's stellar system. These discoveries bring the total number of known ULXs in GCs up to 20. We find that the X-ray spectra of the three new sources do not deviate from the established pattern of spectral behaviour of the other known GC ULXs. The consistency of the X-ray spectral behaviour for these sources points to multiple paths of formation and evolution mechanisms for these rare and unique sources. Using the now larger sample of GC ULXs, we compare the optical properties of the entir…
We report the results of a 2019-2021 monitoring campaign with Swift and associated target-of-opportunity observations with XMM-Newton and NuSTAR, examining the spectral and timing behavior of the highly variable ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) NGC 925 ULX-3. We find that the source exhibits a 127-128 day periodicity, with fluxes typically ranging from 1e-13 to 8e-13 ergs/s/cm2. We do not find strong evidence for a change in period over the time that NGC 925 ULX-3 has been observed, although the source may have been in a much lower flux state when first observed with Chandra in 2005. We do not…

Two recent observations of the nearby galaxy NGC 6946 with NuSTAR, one simultaneous with an XMM-Newton observation, provide an opportunity to examine its population of bright accreting sources from a broadband perspective. We study the three known ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) in the galaxy, and find that ULX-1 and ULX-2 have very steep power-law spectra with $Γ=3.6^{+0.4}_{-0.3}$ in both cases. Their properties are consistent with being super-Eddington accreting sources with the majority of their hard emission obscured and down-scattered. ULX-3 (NGC 6946 X-1) is significantly detected by…
Most ULXs are believed to be powered by super-Eddington accreting neutron stars and, perhaps, black holes. Above the Eddington rate the disc is expected to thicken and to launch powerful winds through radiation pressure. Winds have been recently discovered in several ULXs. However, it is yet unclear whether the thickening of the disc or the wind variability causes the switch between the classical soft and supersoft states observed in some ULXs. In order to understand such phenomenology and the overall super-Eddington mechanism, we undertook a large (800 ks) observing campaign with XMM-Newton t…
We present a photometric survey of the optical counterparts of ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) observed with the Hubble Space Telescope in nearby (< 5 Mpc) galaxies. Of the 33 ULXs with Hubble & Chandra data, 9 have no visible counterpart, placing limits on their M_V of ~ -4 to -9, enabling us to rule out O-type companions in 4 cases. The refined positions of two ULXs place them in the nucleus of their host galaxy. They are removed from our sample. Of the 22 remaining ULXs, 13 have one possible optical counterpart, while multiple are visible within the error regions of other ULXs. By calcul…
We report on the discovery of a new, transient ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) in the galaxy NGC 7090. This new ULX, which we refer to as NGC 7090 ULX3, was discovered via monitoring with $Swift$ during 2019-20, and to date has exhibited a peak luminosity of $L_{\rm{X}} \sim 6 \times 10^{39}$ erg s$^{-1}$. Archival searches show that, prior to its recent transition into the ULX regime, ULX3 appeared to exhibit a fairly stable luminosity of $L_{\rm{X}} \sim 10^{38}$ erg s$^{-1}$. Such strong long-timescale variability may be reminiscent of the small population of known ULX pulsars, although de…
To further understand the nature of the optical counterparts associated with Ultraluminous X-Ray sources (ULXs), we obtained far ultraviolet spectra of the reported counterparts to the ULXs in NGC 1313, Holmberg II, NGC 5204, and M81. The spectral resolution of the ACS prism spectra degrades from 300 at 1300 A to 40 at 1850 A, so longer wavelength features have lower S/N. The spectra of the ULXs in NGC 1313, Ho II, and NGC 5204 are quite similar, showing the N V 1240 A line at about the same equivalent width strength. The presence of this and other emission lines confirms the presence of an ac…
Based on phase-resolved broadband spectroscopy using $XMM$-$Newton$ and $NuSTAR$, we report on a potential cyclotron resonant scattering feature at $E \sim 13$ keV in the pulsed spectrum of the recently discoverd ULX pulsar NGC 300 ULX1. If this interpretation is correct, the implied magnetic field of the central neutron star is $B \sim 10^{12}$ G (assuming scattering off electrons), similar to that estimated from the observed spin-up of the star, and also similar to known Galactic X-ray pulsars. We discuss the implications of this result for the connection between NGC 300 ULX1 and the other k…
We report the detection of flaring events in NGC 4395 ULX1, a nearby ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX), for the first time, using recent XMM-NEWTON observations. The flaring episodes are spectrally harder than the steady emission intervals, resulting in higher fractional variability in the high energy regime. A thin Keplerian and a slim accretion disk provide the best-fit continuum for XMM-NEWTON spectra. All observations show a broad hump-like feature around $\sim 0.9$ keV, which can be associated with a collection of blended emission lines, and suggests the presence of a wind/outflow in this …
Methods. We analyzed broadband XMM-Newton and NuSTAR observations of NGC 300 ULX1, performing phase-averaged and phase-resolved spectroscopy. We compared two physically motivated models for the source spectrum: Non-thermal accretion column emission modeled by a power law with high-energy exponential roll-off (AC model) vs multicolor thermal emission from an optically thick accretion envelope plus a hard power-law tail (MCAE model). We combine the findings of our Bayesian analysis with qualitative physical considerations to evaluate the suitability of each model. Results. The low-energy part (<…
We investigate the spectral and temporal properties of ultra-luminous X-ray source (ULX) NGC~55~ULX1 using {\it Swift}, {\it XMM-Newton} and {\it NuSTAR} observations conducted during 2013--2021. In these observations, the source flux varies by a factor of $\sim 5-6$, and we identify the source mainly in the $soft~ultraluminous$ (SUL) state of ULXs. We fit the X-ray spectra with a two thermal component model consisting of a blackbody (for the soft component) and a disc (for the hard component), and the soft component dominates in these observations. The soft component in the SUL state shows pr…
Ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) are a class of accreting compact objects with X-ray luminosities above 10$^{39}$ erg s$^{-1}$. The average number of ULXs per galaxy is still not well constrained, especially given the uncertainty on the fraction of ULX transients. Here, we report the identification of a new transient ULX in the galaxy NGC 55 (which we label as ULX-2), thanks to recent XMM-Newton and the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory observations. This object was previously classified as a transient X-ray source with a luminosity around a few 10$^{38}$ erg s$^{-1}$ in a 2010 XMM-Newton obser…
We have obtained near-simultaneous Swift/XRT imaging and Gemini GMOS spectroscopy for the ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) NGC~300 ULX-1 (formerly designated SN~2010da). The observed X-ray emission is consistent with an inhomogeneous wind that partially obscures a central, bright inner accretion disk. We simultaneously fit eleven 0.3-10 keV spectra obtained over a $\sim$1 year time period (2016 April to 2017 July) using the same partial covering model, and find that although the covering fraction varies significantly (from 78% to consistent with 0%), the unabsorbed luminosity remains essential…
Variability is a powerful tool to investigate properties of X-ray binaries (XRB), in particular for Ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) that are mainly detected in the X-ray band. For most ULXs the nature of the accretor is unknown, although a few ULXs have been confirmed to be accreting at super-Eddington rates onto a neutron star (NS). Monitoring these sources is particularly useful both to detect transients and to derive periodicities, linked to orbital and super-orbital modulations. Here we present the results of our monitoring campaign of the galaxy NGC 925, performed with the Neil Gehrels…
Variable ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs), which are considered to be black hole binaries (BHBs), are known to show state transitions similarly to Galactic BHBs. However, the relation between the ULX states and the Galactic BHB states is still unclear primarily due to less well-understood behaviors of ULXs in contrast to the Galactic BHBs. Here, we report a statistical X-ray spectral study of 34 energy spectra from seven bright ULXs in the interacting galaxy systems M51 and NGC4490/85, using archive data from multiple Chandra and XMM-Newton observations spanning for a few years. In order to …
Most ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) are believed to be stellar mass black holes or neutron stars accreting beyond the Eddington limit. Determining the nature of the compact object and the accretion mode from broadband spectroscopy is currently a challenge, but the observed timing properties provide insight into the compact object and details of the geometry and accretion processes. Here we report a timing analysis for an 800 ks XMM-Newton campaign on the supersoft ultraluminous X-ray source, NGC 247 ULX-1. Deep and frequent dips occur in the X-ray light curve, with the amplitude increasing…
We present two epochs of near-infrared spectroscopy of the candidate red supergiant counterpart to RX~J004722.4-252051, a ULX in NGC 253. We measure radial velocities of the object and its approximate spectral type by cross-correlating our spectra with those of known red supergiants. Our VLT/X-shooter spectrum is best matched by that of early M-type supergiants, confirming the red supergiant nature of the candidate counterpart. The radial velocity of the spectrum, taken on 2014, August 23, is $417 \pm 4$ km/s. This is consistent with the radial velocity measured in our spectrum taken with Mage…
We present our analysis of the X-ray variability of two ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) based on multiple XMM--Newton observations. We show the linear rms-flux relation is present in eight observations of NGC5408 X-1 and also in three observations of NGC6946 X-1, but data from other ULXs are generally not sufficient to constrain any rms-flux relation. The presence of this relation was previously reported in only two observations of NGC 5408X-1; our results show this is a persistent property of the variability of NGC5408 X-1 and extends to at least one other variable ULX. We speculate this i…
We report on XMM-Newton/Chandra/Swift/HST observations of the ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) in NGC 247, which is found to make transitions between the supersoft ultraluminous (SSUL) regime with a spectrum dominated by a cool ($\sim 0.1$ keV) blackbody component and the soft ultraluminous (SUL) regime with comparable luminosities shared by the blackbody and power-law components. Multi-epoch observations revealed an anti-correlation between the blackbody radius and temperature, $R_{\rm bb} \propto T_{\rm bb}^{-2.8 \pm 0.3}$, ruling out a standard accretion disk as the origin of the soft X-ray…
Ultraluminous pulsars are a definite proof that persistent super-Eddington accretion occurs in nature. They support the scenario according to which most Ultraluminous X-ray Sources (ULXs) are super-Eddington accretors of stellar mass rather than sub-Eddington intermediate mass black holes. An important prediction of theories of supercritical accretion is the existence of powerful outflows of moderately ionized gas at mildly relativistic speeds. In practice, the spectral resolution of X-ray gratings such as RGS onboard XMM-Newton is required to resolve their observational signatures in ULXs. Us…
We present the results of a search for the nature of ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) X-3 in the nearby galaxy NGC 4258. We use archival data from {\it XMM-Newton}, {\it Chandra}, {\it NuSTAR} and {\it HST} observations. Total X-ray data analysed to find the model parameters of the system is indicative of a stellar mass black hole, $\sim$ 10 M$_{\sun}$, as the central compact object. Furthermore, analyses of the optical data from {\it HST} reveal two optical candidates with the 90 per cent confidence level of error radius of 0$\farcs$28. Assuming the optical emission is dominated by the donor …
We report our findings on a new quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) and a long period from the ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) X-2 in nearby galaxy NGC 4736 based on the Chandra and XMM-Newton archival data. To examine the timing properties, power density spectra of the source have been obtained using Fast Fourier Transform. Also the spectral parameters of the source have been calculated by obtaining and fitting the energy spectra. Power density spectrum of this source reveals a QPO peak at $0.73_{-0.14}^{+0.16}$ mHz with an fractional rms variability of 16% using the Chandra data (in the year 2…
Despite two decades of studies, it is still not clear whether ULX spectral transitions are due to stochastic variability in the wind or variations in the accretion rate or in the source geometry. The compact object is also unknown for most ULXs. In order to place constraints onto such scenarios and on the structure of the accretion disc, we studied the temporal evolution of the spectral components of the variable source NGC 55 ULX-1. Using recent and archival data obtained with the XMM-Newton satellite, we modelled the spectra with two blackbody components which we interpret as thermal emissio…
The colliding galaxy pair NGC 2207/IC 2163, at a distance of ~39 Mpc, was observed with Chandra, and an analysis reveals 28 well resolved X-ray sources, including 21 ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) with Lx > 10^39 erg/s, as well as the nucleus of NGC 2207. The number of ULXs is comparable with the largest numbers of ULXs per unit mass in any galaxy yet reported. In this paper we report on these sources, and quantify how their locations correlate with the local star formation rates seen in spatially-resolved star formation rate density images that we have constructed using combinations of Ga…

We report on results from a one-year soft X-ray observing campaign of the ultraluminous X-ray pulsar NGC 300 ULX-1 by the Neutron star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) during 2018--2019. Our analysis also made use of data from Swift/XRT and XMM-Newton in order to model and remove contamination from the nearby eclipsing X-ray binary NGC 300 X-1. We constructed and fitted a series of 5-day averaged NICER spectra of NGC 300 ULX-1 in the 0.4--4.0 keV range to evaluate the long-term spectral evolution of the source, and found that an absorbed power-law model provided the best fit overall. Over…
We report the detection of weak pulsations from the archetypal ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) NGC 1313 X-2. Acceleration searches reveal sinusoidal pulsations in segments of two out of six new deep observations of this object, with a period of $\sim$ 1.5 s and a pulsed fraction of $\sim$ 5%. We use Monte Carlo simulations to demonstrate that the individual detections are unlikely to originate in false Poisson noise detections given their very close frequencies; their strong similarity to other pulsations detected from ULXs also argues they are real. The presence of a large bubble nebula surr…
The presence of large ionised gaseous nebulae found around some ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) provides the means to assess the mechanical and radiative feedback of the central source, and hence constrain the efficiency and impact on the surroundings of the super-Eddington regime powering most of these sources. NGC 1313 X--1 is an archetypal ULX which has been reported to be surrounded by abnormally high [O I]$λ$6300/H$α>$ 0.1 ratios and for which high-resolution spectroscopy in X-rays has hinted the presence of powerful outflows. We report observations taken with the Multi-Unit Spectrosco…
We present evidence for three spin-down glitches (or `anti-glitches') in the ultraluminous accreting X-ray pulsar NGC 300 ULX-1 in timing observations made with the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER). Our timing analysis reveals three sudden spin-down events of magnitudes $Δν= -23, -30,$ and $-43 \,μ$Hz (fractional amplitudes $Δν/ν= -4.4, -5.5,$ and $-7.7 \times 10^{-4}$). We determined fully phase-coherent timing solutions through the first two glitches, giving us high confidence in their detection, while the third candidate glitch is somewhat less secure. These are larger in …
We report on our search for the optical counterparts of two ultraluminous X-ray pulsars with known orbital periods, M82 X-2 and NGC 5907 X-1, in new and archival HST observations, in an effort to characterize the donor stars in these systems. We detect five near-infrared sources consistent with the position of M82 X-2 that are too bright to be single stars. We also detect seven sources in the WFC3/UVIS F336W image whose photometry matches that of 10-15 M$_\odot$ stars turning off the main sequence. Such stars have densities consistent with the properties of the donor star of M82 X-2 as inferre…
