We have investigated the rotational and the X-ray luminosity ($L_{\mathrm{x}}$) observations of 4U 1626--67 accumulated during the last four decades. It has been recorded that the source underwent a torque reversal twice. We have tried to understand whether this eccentrical sign-switch of the period derivative ($\dot{P}$) of the source could be accounted for with the existing torque models. We have found that the observed source properties are better estimated with the distances close to the lower limit of the previously predicted distance range ($5-13$ kpc). Furthermore, assuming an inclined rotator, we have considered the partial accretion/ejection from the co-rotation radius that leads different $L_{\mathrm{x}}$-$\dot{P}$ profiles than the aligned rotator cases. We have concluded that the oblique rotator assumption brings at least equally best fitting to the observed X-ray luminosity and the rotational properties of 4U 1626--67. More importantly, the estimated change of the mass accretion rate which causes the change in observed $L_{\mathrm{x}}$ of 4U 1626--67 is much less than that is found in an aligned rotator case. In other words, without the need for a substantial modification of mass accretion rate from the companion star, the range of the observed X-ray luminosity could be explained naturally with an inclined magnetic axis and rotation axis of the neutron star.
Be stars are rapidly rotating B stars with Balmer emission lines that indicate the presence of a Keplerian, rotationally supported, circumstellar gas disc. Current disc models, referred to as "decretion discs", make use of the zero torque inner boundary condition typically applied to accretion discs, with the 'decretion' modelled by adding mass to the disc at a radius of about two per cent larger than the inner disc boundary. We point out that, in this model, the rates at which mass and energy need to be added to the disc are implausibly large. What is required is that the disc has not only a …
X-ray flux and pulse period fluctuations in an accretion-powered pulsar convey important information about the disk-magnetosphere interaction. It is shown that simultaneous flux and period measurements can be analysed with a Kalman filter based on the standard magnetocentrifugal accretion torque to generate accurate time-dependent estimates of three hidden state variables, which fluctuate stochastically and cannot be measured directly: the mass accretion rate, the Maxwell stress at the disk-magnetosphere boundary, and the radiative efficiency of accretion onto the stellar surface. The inferred…
Accreting millisecond X-ray pulsars (AMXPs) show burst oscillations during thermonuclear explosions of the accreted plasma which are markedly different from those observed in non-pulsating low mass X-ray binaries. The AMXP XTE J1814-338 is known for having burst oscillations that are phase locked (constant phase difference) and coincident with the accretion powered pulsations during all its thermonuclear bursts but the last one. In this work we use a coherent timing analysis to investigate this phenomenon in more detail and with higher time resolution than was done in the past. We confirm that…
We review the pulse profile evolution of the unique accretion powered X-ray pulsar 4U 1626-67 over the last 40 years since its discovery. This pulsar showed two distinct eras of steady spin-up separated by a steady spin-down episode for about 18 years. In the present work, using data from different observatories active during each phase of spin-up and spin-down we establish a clear correlation between the accretion torque acting on this pulsar and its pulse profile. The energy resolved pulse profiles are identical in both the spin-up eras and quite different in the spin-down era, especially in…
After about 18 years of steadily spinning down, the accretion-powered pulsar 4U 1626-67, experienced a torque reversal at the beginning of 2008. For the present study we have used all available Fermi/GBM data since its launch in 2008 June 11 and over 5 yr of hard X-ray Swift/BAT observations (starting from 2004 October up to the present time). This second detected torque reversal is centered near MJD 54500 (2008 Feb 4) and it lasts approximately 150 days. From 2004 up to the end of 2007 4U 1626-67 the spin-down rate decreased at a mean rate of ~ -5.5E-13 Hz s-1 until the source reversed torque…
The spin-down rate of PSR J1023+0038, one of the three confirmed transitional millisecond pulsars, was measured in both radio pulsar (RMSP) and X-ray pulsar (LMXB) states. The spin-down rate in the LMXB state is only about 27 % greater than in the RMSP state (Jaodand et al. 2016). The inner disk radius, r_in, obtained recently by Ertan (2017) for the propeller phase, which is close to the co-rotation radius, r_co, and insensitive to the mass-flow rate, can explain the observed torques together with the X-ray luminosities, Lx . The X-ray pulsar and radio pulsar states correspond to accretion wi…
The Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer has observed five outbursts from the transient 2.5 ms accretion-powered pulsar SAX J1808.4-3658 during 1998-2008. We present a pulse timing study of the most recent outburst and compare it with the previous timing solutions. The spin frequency of the source continues to decrease at a rate of (-5.5+/-1.2)x10^-18 Hz/s, which is consistent with the previously determined spin derivative. The spin-down occurs mostly during quiescence, and it is most likely due to the magnetic dipole torque from a B = 1.5x10^8 G dipolar field at the neutron star surface. We also find …
Some fraction of the material ejected in a core collapse supernova explosion may remain bound to the compact remnant, and eventually turn around and fall back. We show that the late time (> days) power associated with the accretion of this "fallback" material may significantly affect the optical light curve, in some cases producing super-luminous or otherwise peculiar supernovae. We use spherically symmetric hydrodynamical models to estimate the accretion rate at late times for a range of progenitor masses and radii and explosion energies. The accretion rate onto the proto-neutron star or blac…
The long-term rotational evolution of the old, isolated pulsar, PSR B0950+08 is intriguing in that its spin-down rate displays sinusoidal-like oscillations due to alternating variations, both in magnitude and sign, of the second time derivative of the pulse frequency. We show that the large internal temperature to pinning energy ratio towards the base of the crust implied by the recent high surface temperature measurement of PSR B0950+08 leads to linear creep interaction between vortex lines and pinning sites to operate in this pulsar. Vortex lines assume a parabolic shape due to pinning to nu…
Glitches are sudden changes in rotation frequency and spin-down rate, observed from pulsars of all ages. Standard glitches are characterized by a positive step in angular velocity ($ΔΩ$ $ > $ $0$) and a negative step in the spin-down rate ($Δ\dot Ω$ $ < $ $0$) of the pulsar. There are no glitch-associated changes in the electromagnetic signature of rotation-powered pulsars in all cases so far. For the first time, in the last glitch of PSR J1119-6127, there is clear evidence for changing emission properties coincident with the glitch. This glitch is also unusual in its signature. Further, the a…
In this study, we examine the long term torque noise fluctuations of persistent Xray binaries Her X-1, Vela X-1, GX 301-2, CEN X-3, 4U 1538-53, OAO 1657-415 and 4U 1626-67 using the historical pulse frequency measurements provided by CGRO/BATSE and Fermi/GBM. We find that known disk-fed sources exhibit $1/ω^{2}$ red noise component in their power density spectra which is saturated over long timescales. On the other hand, wind-fed sources form a clear white noise component and the wind-fed sources with occasional transient disk formation imprint $1/ω$ type flicker noise. We discuss their long-t…
Aims. The accretion-powered pulsar 4U 1626-67 experienced a new torque reversal at the beginning of 2008, after about 18 years of steadily spinning down. The main goal of the present work is to study this recent torque reversal that occurred in 2008 February. Methods. We present a spectral analysis of this source using two pointed observations performed by Suzaku in 2006 March and in 2010 September. Results. We confirm with Suzaku the presence of a strong emission-line complex centered on 1 keV, with the strongest line being the hydrogen-like Ne Ly-alpha at 1.025(3) keV. We were able to resolv…
While fewer in number than the dominant rotation-powered radio pulsar population, peculiar classes of isolated neutron stars (INSs) -- which include magnetars, the ROSAT-discovered "Magnificent Seven" (M7), rotating radio transients (RRATs), and central compact objects in supernova remnants (CCOs) -- represent a key element in understanding the neutron star phenomenology. We report the results of an observational campaign to study the properties of the source 2XMM J104608.7-594306. Its evolutionary state is investigated by means of deep dedicated observations obtained with XMM-Newton, the ESO …
The X-ray source XSS J12270-4859 has been first suggested to be a magnetic cataclysmic variable of Intermediate Polar type on the basis of its optical spectrum and a possible 860 s X-ray periodicity. However further X-ray observations by the Suzaku and XMM-Newton satellites did not confirm this periodicity but show a very peculiar variability, including moderate repetitive flares and numerous absorption dips. These characteristics together with a suspected 4.3 h orbital period would suggest a possible link with the so- called "dipping sources", a sub-class of Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXB). Ba…
We present detailed spectral and timing studies using a NuSTAR observation of GX 1+4 in October 2015 during an intermediate intensity state. The measured spin period of 176.778 s is found to be one of the highest values since its discovery. In contrast to a broad sinusoidal-like pulse profile, a peculiar sharp peak is observed in profiles below ~25 keV. The profiles at higher energies are found to be significantly phase-shifted compared to the soft X-ray profiles. Broadband energy spectra of GX 1+4, obtained from NuSTAR and Swift observations, are described with various continuum models. Among…
The accretion-induced pulse-period changes of the Be/X-ray binary pulsar X Persei were investigated over a period of 1996 January to 2017 September. This study utilized the monitoring data acquired with the RXTE/ASM in 1.5$-$12 keV and MAXI/GSC in 2$-$20 keV. The source intensity changed by a factor of 5$-$6 over this period. The pulsar was spinning down for 1996$-$2003, and has been spinning up since 2003, as already reported. The spin up/down rate and the 3$-$12 keV flux, determined every 250 d, showed a clear negative correlation, which can be successfully explained by the accretion torque …
Ge et al. reported a peculiar large glitch observed from SGR 1935 recently~\citep{2022arXiv221103246G}. % Interestingly, this glitch occurred about $3.1\pm 2.5~\rm{days}$ before FRB 200428, accompanied by a delayed spin up (DSU) process with a timescale of $8\pm 1~\rm{days}$. % This DSU is the first one detected from magnetars unambiguously, previously, DSU has only been detected from large glitches of the young Crab pulsar. % Strikingly, this DSU even resulted in torque reversal, i.e., the spin down state of SGR 1935 was turned into a spin up one within $8\pm 1~\rm{days}$, the first case obse…
We present an analysis of the spectral shape and pulse profile of the accretion-powered pulsar 4U 1626-67 observed with Suzaku and NuSTAR during a spin-up state. The pulsar, which experienced a torque reversal to spin-up in 2008, has a spin period of 7.7 s. Comparing the phase-averaged spectra obtained with Suzaku in 2010 and with NuSTAR in 2015, we find that the spectral shape changed between the two observations: the 3-10 keV flux increased by 5% while the 30-60 keV flux decreased significantly by 35%. Phase-averaged and phase-resolved spectral analysis shows that the continuum spectrum obse…
Force-free pulsar magnetospheres develop a large scale poloidal electric current circuit that flows along open magnetic field lines from the neutron star to the termination shock. The electric current closes through the interior of the neutron star where it provides the torque that spins-down the star. In the present work, we study the internal electric current in an axisymmetric rotator. We evaluate the path of the electric current by requiring the minimization of internal Ohmic losses. We find that, in millisecond pulsars, the current reaches the base of the crust, while in pulsars with peri…
There is a growing new class of young spin-down powered pulsars called GeV-quiet soft gamma-ray pulsar; (1) spectral turnover appears around~10MeV, (2) the X-ray spectra of below 20 keV can be described by power law with photon index around 1.2 and (3) the light curve in X-ray/soft gamma-ray bands shows single broad pulse. Their emission properties are distinct from the normal gamma-ray pulsars, for which the spectral peak in $νF_ν$ appears in GeV energy bands and the X-ray/gamma-ray light curves show sharp and double (or more) peaks. In this paper, we discuss that X-ray/soft gamma-ray emissio…
In this paper we consider the variability of the luminosity of a compact object (CO) powered by the accretion of an extremely inhomogeneous ("clumpy") stream of matter. The accretion of a single clump results in an X-ray flare: we adopt a simple model for the response of the CO to the accretion of a single clump, and derive a stochastic differential equation (SDE) for the accretion powered luminosity $L(t)$. We put the SDE in the equivalent form of an equation for the flares' luminosity distribution (FLD), and discuss its solution in the stationary case. As a case study, we apply our formalism…
Swift J164449+573451 is a peculiar outburst which is most likely powered by the tidal disruption of a star by a massive black hole. Within the tidal disruption scenario, we show that the periastron distance is considerably smaller than the disruption radius and the outflow should be launched mainly via magnetic activities (e.g., Blandford-Znajek process) otherwise the observed long-lasting X-ray afterglow emission satisfying the relation $L_{X}\propto\dot{M}$ can not be reproduced, where $L_{X}$ is the X-ray luminosity and $\dot{M}$ is the accretion rate. We also suggest that $L_{X}\propto\dot…
The X-ray pulsar SAX J0635+0533 was repeatedly observed with the XMM-Newton satellite in 2003-2004. The precise localization provided by these observations confirms the association of SAX J0635+0533 with a Be star. The source was found, for the first time, in a low intensity state, a factor ~30 lower than that seen in all previous observations. The spectrum, well fitted by an absorbed power law with photon index ~1.7 and N_H = 1.2x10^22 cm^-2, was compatible with that of the high state. The low flux did not allow the detection of the pulsations at 33.8 ms seen BeppoSAX and RXTE data. In view o…
We report on high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy of the ultracompact X-ray binary pulsar 4U 1626-67 with Chandra/HETGS acquired in 2010, two years after the pulsar experienced a torque reversal. The well-known strong Ne and O emission lines with Keplerian profiles are shown to arise at the inner edge of the magnetically-channeled accretion disk. We exclude a photoionization model for these lines based on the absence of sharp radiative recombination continua. Instead, we show that the lines arise from a collisional plasma in the inner-disk atmosphere, with $T\simeq 10^7$ K and $n_e \sim 10^{17}$…
We report on the discovery of extended X-ray emission around the high magnetic field Rotating Radio Transient J1819-1458. Using a 30ks Chandra ACIS-S observation, we found significant evidence for extended X-ray emission with a peculiar shape: a compact region out to 5.5", and more diffuse emission extending out to ~13" from the source. The most plausible interpretation is a nebula somehow powered by the pulsar, although the small number of counts prevents a conclusive answer on the nature of this emission. RRAT J1819-1458's spin-down energy loss rate (Edot~3x10^{32} erg/s) is much lower than …
We present an analysis of the spectral properties of the peculiar X-ray pulsar X Per based on INTEGRAL observations. We show that the source exhibits an unusually hard spectrum and is confidently detected by ISGRI up to more than 100 keV. We find that two distinct components may be identified in the broadband 4-200 keV spectrum of the source. We interpret these components as the result of thermal and bulk Comptonization in the vicinity of the neutron star and describe them with several semi-phenomenological models. The previously reported absorption feature at ~30 keV is not required in the pr…
Microquasars are neutron star or black hole X-ray binaries with jets. These jets can create shock-ionized bubbles of hot plasma that can masquerade as peculiar supernova remnants (SNRs) in extragalactic surveys. To see if this is the case in the well-studied spiral galaxy M83, where one microquasar candidate (M83-MQ1) has already been identified, we studied the properties of nine SNR candidates, selected because of their elongated or irregular morphology, from the set of previously identified SNRs in that galaxy. Using multiwavelength data from Chandra, the Hubble Space Telescope, Gemini, and …
Transitional millisecond pulsars (tMSPs) switch, on roughly multi-year timescales, between rotation-powered radio millisecond pulsar (RMSP) and accretion-powered low-mass X-ray binary (LMXB) states. The tMSPs have raised several questions related to the nature of accretion flow in their LMXB state and the mechanism that causes the state switch. The discovery of coherent X-ray pulsations from PSR J1023+0038 (while in the LMXB state) provides us with the first opportunity to perform timing observations and to compare the neutron star's spin variation during this state to the measured spin-down i…
We present analysis of RXTE--PCA observations of GX 1+4 between March 3, 2001 and January 31, 2003 together with the CGRO--BATSE X-ray flux and frequency derivative time series between 1991 and 1999. From the timing analysis of RXTE-PCA observations, we are able to phase connect pulse arrival times of the source within two different time intervals and obtain corresponding timing solutions. Using these pulse arrival times, we contribute to long term pulse frequency history of the source. We look for episodic correlations and anti-correlations between torque and X-ray luminosity using CGRO--BATS…
BD+6073 is the optical counterpart of the X-ray source IGR J00370+6122, a probable accretion-powered X-ray pulsar. The X-ray light curve of this binary system shows clear periodicity at 15.7 d, which has been interpreted as repeated outbursts around the periastron of an eccentric orbit. We obtained high-resolution spectra of BD+6073 at different epochs. We used the FASTWind code to generate a stellar atmosphere model to fit the observed spectrum and obtain physical magnitudes. The synthetic spectrum was used as a template for cross-correlation with the observed spectra to measure radial veloci…
XSSJ1227.0-4859 is a peculiar, hard X-ray source recently positionally associated to the Fermi-LAT source 1FGLJ1227.9-4852/2FGLJ1227.7-4853. Multi-wavelength observations have added information on this source, indicating a low-luminosity low-mass X-ray binary (LMXB), but its nature is still unclear. To progress in our understanding, we present new X-ray data from a monitoring campaign performed in 2011 with the XMM-Newton, RXTE, and Swift satellites and combine them with new gamma-ray data from the Fermi and AGILE satellites. We complement the study with simultaneous near-UV photometry from XM…
Anomalous X-ray pulsars and soft gamma repeaters are slowly rotating, young, and isolated neutron stars exhibiting sporadic outbursts and high X-ray quiescent luminosities. They are believed to be powered by ultrastrong magnetic fields, $B\sim10^{14}-10^{15}$ G, associated with `magnetars'. In the peculiar case of SGR 0418+5729, timing parameters imply a dipolar $B$-field of $6.1\times10^{12}$ G. This discovery has challenged the traditional picture of magnetars in terms of $B$-field strengths, evolutionary stages, and ages. Here we provide a novel approach to estimate a magnetar's age by cons…
