Glitches are sudden changes in rotation frequency and spin-down rate, observed from pulsars of all ages. Standard glitches are characterized by a positive step in angular velocity ($ΔΩ$ $ > $ $0$) and a negative step in the spin-down rate ($Δ\dot Ω$ $ < $ $0$) of the pulsar. There are no glitch-associated changes in the electromagnetic signature of rotation-powered pulsars in all cases so far. For the first time, in the last glitch of PSR J1119-6127, there is clear evidence for changing emission properties coincident with the glitch. This glitch is also unusual in its signature. Further, the absolute value of the spin-down rate actually decreases in the long term. This is in contrast to usual glitch behaviour. In this paper we extend the vortex creep model in order to take into account these peculiarities. We propose that a starquake with crustal plate movement towards the rotational poles of the star induces inward vortex motion which causes the unusual glitch signature. The component of the magnetic field perpendicular to the rotation axis will decrease, giving rise to a permanent change in the pulsar external torque.
We present timing solutions from the Fermi-LAT observations of gamma-ray pulsars PSR J0835$-$4510 (Vela), PSR J1023$-$5746, PSR J2111$+$4606, and PSR J2229$+$6114. Data ranges for each pulsar extend over a decade. From data analysis we have identified a total of 20 glitches, 11 of which are new discoveries. Among them, 15 glitches are large ones with $Δν/ν\gtrsim10^{-6}$. PSR J1023$-$5746 is the most active pulsar with glitch activity parameter being $A_{\rm g}=14.5\times10^{-7}$\yr~in the considered data span and should be a target for frequently glitching Vela-like pulsars in future observat…
PSR J1420-6048 is a young gamma-ray pulsar with recurrent glitches. Utilizing long-term monitoring data obtained from the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope, we found that PSR J1420-6048 has shown gamma-ray flux variation and we also detected four glitches between 2008 and 2019. Two of the glitches are previously unknown, and their gamma-ray spectrum also shows variability between each glitch. Since the results might be contaminated by background sources, we discuss whether the observed changes in flux and spectra were caused by artificial misallocations of photons from a nearby pulsar wind nebul…
PSR J0537$-$6910 is the most active glitching pulsar with a glitch rate $\sim0.3$ yr $^{-1}$. We have reanalysed 45 glitches of PSR J0537$-$6910 published in the literature and have done post-glitch timing fits within the vortex creep model. Moment of inertia fractions of the superfluid regions participating in glitches are obtained for each event and the model predictions for the inter-glitch time are confronted with the observed time-scales. Similarities and differences with the glitching behaviours of the well studied Crab and Vela pulsars are highlighted. From superfluid recoupling time-sc…

We present high-sensitivity, wide-band observations (704 to 4032 MHz) of the young to middle-aged radio pulsar J1452-6036, taken at multiple epochs before and, serendipitously, shortly after a glitch occurred on 2019 April 27. We obtained the data using the new ultra-wide-bandwidth low-frequency (UWL) receiver at the Parkes radio telescope, and we used Markov Chain Monte Carlo techniques to estimate the glitch parameters robustly. The data from our third observing session began 3 h after the best-fitting glitch epoch, which we constrained to within 4 min. The glitch was of intermediate size, w…

The close correlation observed between emission state and spin-down rate change of pulsars has many implications both for the magnetospheric physics and the neutron star interior. The middle-aged pulsar PSR J0738$-$4042, which had been observed to display variations in the pulse profile associated with its spin-down rate change due to external effects, is a remarkable example. In this study, based on the 12.5-yr combined public timing data from UTMOST and Parkes, we have detected a new emission-rotation correlation in PSR J0738$-$4042 concurrent with a glitch. A glitch that occurred at MJD 573…

The outburst and spin-down glitch of magnetars are modeled from the magnetospheric point of view. We try to discuss the following four questions: (1) Which pulsar on the period and peirod-derivative diagram are more likely to show magnetar outburst? (2) Which outburst will make the glitch that triggered the outburst to become a spin-down glitch? (3) Can we model the outburst and spin-down glitch in PSR J1119$-$6127 simultaneously? (4) Why the torque variation is delayed compared with the peak of the X-ray luminosity in 1E 1048.1$-$5937 and PSR J1119$-$6127? It is found that both the global and…
PSR J0537-6910, also known as the Big Glitcher, is the most prolific glitching pulsar known, and its spin-induced pulsations are only detectable in X-ray. We present results from analysis of 2.7 years of NICER timing observations, from 2017 August to 2020 April. We obtain a rotation phase-connected timing model for the entire timespan, which overlaps with the third observing run of LIGO/Virgo, thus enabling the most sensitive gravitational wave searches of this potentially strong gravitational wave-emitting pulsar. We find that the short-term braking index between glitches decreases towards a …
Measuring a pulsar's rotational evolution is crucial to understanding the nature of the pulsar. Here we provide updated timing models for the rotational evolution of six pulsars, five of which are rotation phase-connected using primarily NICER X-ray data. For the newly-discovered fast energetic young pulsar, PSR J0058-7218, we increase the baseline of its timing model from 1.4 days to 8 months and not only measure more precisely its spin-down rate nudot = (-6.2324+/-0.0001)x10^-11 Hz s^-1 but also for the first time the second time derivative of spin rate nuddot = (4.2+/-0.2)x10^-21 Hz s^-2. F…
We report here on the first results of a systematic monitoring of southern glitching pulsars at the Argentine Institute of Radioastronomy that started in the year 2019. We detected a major glitch in the Vela pulsar (PSR J0835$-$4510) and two small-glitches in PSR J1048$-$5832. For each glitch, we present the measurement of glitch parameters by fitting timing residuals. We then make an individual pulses study of Vela in observations before and after the glitch. We selected 6 days of observations around the major glitch on 2021 July 22 and study their statistical properties with machine learning…

In certain pulsar timing experiments, where observations are scheduled approximately periodically (e.g. daily), timing models with significantly different frequencies (including but not limited to glitch models with different frequency increments) return near-equivalent timing residuals. The average scheduling aperiodicity divided by the phase error due to time-of-arrival uncertainties is a useful indicator of when the degeneracy is important. Synthetic data are used to explore the effect of this degeneracy systematically. It is found that phase-coherent tempo2 or temponest-based approaches ar…
