Safely deploying robots in uncertain and dynamic environments requires a systematic accounting of various risks, both within and across layers in an autonomy stack from perception to motion planning and control. Many widely used motion planning algorithms do not adequately incorporate inherent perception and prediction uncertainties, often ignoring them altogether or making questionable assumptions of Gaussianity. We propose a distributionally robust incremental sampling-based motion planning framework that explicitly and coherently incorporates perception and prediction uncertainties. We design output feedback policies and consider moment-based ambiguity sets of distributions to enforce probabilistic collision avoidance constraints under the worst-case distribution in the ambiguity set. Our solution approach, called Output Feedback Distributionally Robust $RRT^{*}$(OFDR-$RRT^{*})$, produces asymptotically optimal risk-bounded trajectories for robots operating in dynamic, cluttered, and uncertain environments, explicitly incorporating mapping and localization error, stochastic process disturbances, unpredictable obstacle motion, and uncertain obstacle locations. Numerical experiments illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.
We investigate the problem of risk averse robot path planning using the deep reinforcement learning and distributionally robust optimization perspectives. Our problem formulation involves modelling the robot as a stochastic linear dynamical system, assuming that a collection of process noise samples is available. We cast the risk averse motion planning problem as a Markov decision process and propose a continuous reward function design that explicitly takes into account the risk of collision with obstacles while encouraging the robot's motion towards the goal. We learn the risk-averse robot co…

This paper proposes a novel safety specification tool, called the distributionally robust risk map (DR-risk map), for a mobile robot operating in a learning-enabled environment. Given the robot's position, the map aims to reliably assess the conditional value-at-risk (CVaR) of collision with obstacles whose movements are inferred by Gaussian process regression (GPR). Unfortunately, the inferred distribution is subject to errors, making it difficult to accurately evaluate the CVaR of collision. To overcome this challenge, this tool measures the risk under the worst-case distribution in a so-cal…

We present a case study applying learning-based distributionally robust model predictive control to highway motion planning under stochastic uncertainty of the lane change behavior of surrounding road users. The dynamics of road users are modelled using Markov jump systems, in which the switching variable describes the desired lane of the vehicle under consideration and the continuous state describes the pose and velocity of the vehicles. We assume the switching probabilities of the underlying Markov chain to be unknown. As the vehicle is observed and thus, samples from the Markov chain are dr…
Robust autonomy stacks require tight integration of perception, motion planning, and control layers, but these layers often inadequately incorporate inherent perception and prediction uncertainties, either ignoring them altogether or making questionable assumptions of Gaussianity. Robots with nonlinear dynamics and complex sensing modalities operating in an uncertain environment demand more careful consideration of how uncertainties propagate across stack layers. We propose a framework to integrate perception, motion planning, and control by explicitly incorporating perception and prediction u…
Designing robotic tasks for co-manipulation necessitates to exploit not only proprioceptive but also exteroceptive information for improved safety and autonomy. Following such instinct, this research proposes to formulate intuitive robotic tasks following human viewpoint by incorporating visuo-tactile perception. The visual data using depth cameras surveils and determines the object dimensions and human intentions while the tactile sensing ensures to maintain the desired contact to avoid slippage. Experiment performed on robot platform with human assistance under industrial settings validates …
We design a controller for an agent whose mission is to reach a stationary target while avoiding a family of obstacles which are not known a-priori. The agent moves in the two dimensional plane with non-trivial double integrator dynamics and receives only local information from its surroundings. Under mild assumptions on the family of obstacles (smoothness, sufficient distance from each other, bounded curvature, etc), we prove that our control algorithm yields guaranteed obstacle avoidance and convergence to the target.

Trajectory optimization and model predictive control are essential techniques underpinning advanced robotic applications, ranging from autonomous driving to full-body humanoid control. State-of-the-art algorithms have focused on data-driven approaches that infer the system dynamics online and incorporate posterior uncertainty during planning and control. Despite their success, such approaches are still susceptible to catastrophic errors that may arise due to statistical learning biases, unmodeled disturbances, or even directed adversarial attacks. In this paper, we tackle the problem of dynami…

We investigate how to utilize predictive models for selecting appropriate motion planning strategies based on perception uncertainty estimation for agile unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) navigation tasks. Although there are variety of motion planning and perception algorithms for such tasks, the impact of perception uncertainty is not explicitly handled in many of the current motion algorithms, which leads to performance loss in real-life scenarios where the measurement are often noisy due to external disturbances. We develop a novel framework for embedding perception uncertainty to high level mo…
This paper describes a Python toolbox for active perception and control synthesis of probabilistic signal temporal logic (PrSTL) formulas of switched linear systems with additive Gaussian disturbances and measurement noises. We implement a counterexample-guided synthesis strategy that combines Bounded Model Checking, linear programming, and sampling-based motion planning techniques. We illustrate our approach and the toolbox throughout the paper with a motion planning example for a vehicle with noisy localization. We consider the problem of risk-sensitive motion planning in the presence of randomly moving obstacles. To this end, we adopt a model predictive control (MPC) scheme and pose the obstacle avoidance constraint in the MPC problem as a distributionally robust constraint with a KL divergence ambiguity set. This constraint is the dual representation of the Entropic Value-at-Risk (EVaR). Building upon this viewpoint, we propose an algorithm to follow waypoints and discuss its feasibility and completion in finite time. We compare the policies obtained using EVaR with those obtained using another comm…

Autonomous mobile manipulation robots that can collect trolleys are widely used to liberate human resources and fight epidemics. Most prior robotic trolley collection solutions only detect trolleys with 2D poses or are merely based on specific marks and lack the formal design of planning algorithms. In this paper, we present a novel mobile manipulation system with applications in luggage trolley collection. The proposed system integrates a compact hardware design and a progressive perception and planning framework, enabling the system to efficiently and robustly collect trolleys in dynamic and…

We present a motion planning algorithm for a class of uncertain control-affine nonlinear systems which guarantees runtime safety and goal reachability when using high-dimensional sensor measurements (e.g., RGB-D images) and a learned perception module in the feedback control loop. First, given a dataset of states and observations, we train a perception system that seeks to invert a subset of the state from an observation, and estimate an upper bound on the perception error which is valid with high probability in a trusted domain near the data. Next, we use contraction theory to design a stabil…
The key of the post-disaster humanitarian logistics (PD-HL) is to build a good facility location and capacity planning (FLCP) model for delivering relief supplies to affected areas in time. To fully exploit the historical PD data, this paper adopts the data-driven distributionally robust (DR) approach and proposes a novel multi-period FLCP model under the $\infty$-Wasserstein joint chance constraints (MFLCP-W). Specifically, we sequentially decide locations from a candidate set to build facilities with supply capacities, which are expanded if more economical, and use a finite number of histori…
Chance-constrained motion planning requires uncertainty in dynamics to be propagated into uncertainty in state. When nonlinear models are used, Gaussian assumptions on the state distribution do not necessarily apply since almost all random variables propagated through nonlinear dynamics results in non-Gaussian state distributions. To address this, recent works have developed moment-based approaches for enforcing chance-constraints on non-Gaussian state distributions. However, there still lacks fast and accurate moment propagation methods to determine the necessary statistical moments of these …

This work proposes the use of Bayesian approximations of uncertainty from deep learning in a robot planner, showing that this produces more cautious actions in safety-critical scenarios. The case study investigated is motivated by a setup where an aerial robot acts as a "scout" for a ground robot. This is useful when the below area is unknown or dangerous, with applications in space exploration, military, or search-and-rescue. Images taken from the aerial view are used to provide a less obstructed map to guide the navigation of the robot on the ground. Experiments are conducted using a deep le…
