Most measurements are designed to tell you which of several alternatives have occurred, but it is also possible to make measurements that eliminate possibilities and tell you an alternative that did not occur. Measurements of this type have proven useful in quantum foundations and in quantum cryptography. Here we show how group theory can be used to design such measurements. After some general considerations, we focus on the case of measurements on two-qubit states that eliminate one state. We then move on to construct measurements that eliminate two three-qubit states and four four-qubit states. A condition that constrains the construction of elimination measurements is then presented. Finally, in an appendix, we briefly consider the case of elimination measurements with failure probabilities and an elimination measurement on $n$-qubit states.
Quantum state elimination measurements tell us what states a quantum system does not have. This is different from state discrimination, where one tries to determine what the state of a quantum system is, rather than what it is not. Apart from being of fundamental interest, quantum state elimination may find uses in quantum communication and quantum cryptography. We consider unambiguous quantum state elimination for two or more qubits, where each qubit can be in one of two possible states. Optimal measurements for eliminating one and two states out of four two-qubit states are given. We also pr…
Decoherence-induced leakage errors can couple a physical or encoded qubit to other levels, thus potentially damaging the qubit. They can therefore be very detrimental in quantum computation and require special attention. Here we present a general method for removing such errors by using simple decoupling and recoupling pulse sequences. The proposed gates are experimentally accessible in a variety of promising quantum computing proposals.
Leakage errors damage a qubit by coupling it to other levels. Over the years, several theoretical approaches to dealing with such errors have been developed based on perturbation arguments. Here we propose a different strategy: we use a sequence of finite rotation gates to exactly eliminate leakage errors. The strategy is illustrated by the recently proposed charge quadrupole qubit in a triple quantum dot, where there are two logical states to support the qubit and one leakage state. We have found an su(2) subalgebra in the three-level system, and by using the subalgebra we show that ideal Pau…
Decoherence-induced leakage errors can potentially damage physical or logical qubits by coupling them to other system levels. Here we report the first experimental implementation of Leakage Elimination Operators (LEOs) that aims to reduce this undermining, and that can be applied alongside universal quantum computing. Using IBM's cloud quantum computer, we have studied three potentially applicable examples of subspaces in two- and three-qubit Hilbert spaces and found that the LEOs significantly suppress leakage.
Continuous-variable (CV) systems are attracting increasing attention in the realization of universal quantum computation. Several recent experiments have shown the feasibility of using CV systems to, e.g., encode a qubit into a trapped-ion mechanical oscillator and perform logic gates [Nature 566, 513-517 (2019)]. The essential next step is to protect the encoded qubit from quantum decoherence, e.g., the motional decoherence due to the interaction between a mechanical oscillator and its environment. Here we propose a scheme to suppress quantum decoherence of a single-mode harmonic oscillator u…
``Leakage'' errors are particularly serious errors which couple states within a code subspace to states outside of that subspace thus destroying the error protection benefit afforded by an encoded state. We generalize an earlier method for producing leakage elimination decoupling operations and examine the effects of the leakage eliminating operations on decoherence-free or noiseless subsystems which encode one logical, or protected qubit into three or four qubits. We find that by eliminating the large class of leakage errors, under some circumstances, we can create the conditions for a decohe…
Hypothesis elimination is a special case of Bayesian updating, where each piece of new data rules out a set of prior hypotheses. We describe how to use Grover's algorithm to perform hypothesis elimination for a class of probability distributions encoded on a register of qubits, and establish a lower bound on the required computational resources.
In realizations of quantum computing, a two-level system (qubit) is often singled out of the many levels of an anharmonic oscillator. In these cases, simple qubit control fails on short time scales because of coupling to leakage levels. We provide an easy to implement analytic formula that inhibits this leakage from any single-control analog or pixelated pulse. It is based on adding a second control that is proportional to the time-derivative of the first. For realistic parameters of superconducting qubits, this strategy reduces the error by an order of magnitude relative to the state of the a…
We show that the cost of strong simulation of quantum circuits using $t$ $T$ gate magic states exhibits non-trivial reductions on its upper bound for $t=1$, $t=2$, $t=3$, and $t=6$ with odd-prime-qudits. This agrees with previous numerical bounds found for qubits. We define simulation cost by the number of terms that require Gaussian elimination of a $t \times t$ matrix and so capture the cost of simulation methods that proceed by computing stabilizer inner products or evaluating quadratic Gauss sums. Prior numerical searchs for qubits were unable to converge beyond $t=7$. We effectively incre…
Single-qubit operations on singlet-triplet qubits in GaAs double quantum dots have not yet reached the fidelities required for fault-tolerant quantum information processing. Considering experimentally important constraints and using measured noise spectra, we numerically minimize the effect of decoherence (including high-frequency 1/f-like noise) and show theoretically that quantum gates with fidelities higher than 99.9% are achievable. We also present a self-consistent tuning protocol which should allow the elimination of individual systematic gate errors directly in an experiment.
Parasitic crosstalk in superconducting quantum devices is a leading limitation for quantum gates. We demonstrate the suppression of static ZZ crosstalk in a two-qubit, two-coupler superconducting circuit, where the frequency of a tunable coupler can be adjusted such that the ZZ interaction from each coupler destructively interfere. We verify the crosstalk elimination with simultaneous randomized benchmarking, and use a parametrically activated iSWAP interaction to achieve a Bell state preparation fidelity of 98.5% and a $\sqrt{\textrm{iSWAP}}$ gate fidelity of 94.8% obtained via quantum proces…
We propose a new scheme for quantum error correction using robust continuous variable probe modes, rather than fragile ancilla qubits, to detect errors without destroying data qubits. The use of such probe modes reduces the required number of expensive qubits in error correction and allows efficient encoding, error detection and error correction. Moreover, the elimination of the need for direct qubit interactions significantly simplifies the construction of quantum circuits. We will illustrate how the approach implements three existing quantum error correcting codes: the 3-qubit bit-flip (phas…
We show that the coherent coupling of atomic qubits at distant nodes of a quantum network, composed of several cavities linked by optical fibers, can be arbitrarily controlled via the selective pairing of Raman transitions. The adiabatic elimination of the atomic excited states and photonic states leads to selective qubit-qubit interactions, which would have important applications in quantum information processing. Quantum gates between any pair of distant qubits and parallel two-qubit operations on selected qubit pairs can be implemented through suitable choices of the parameters of the exter…
We present the view of quantum algorithms as a search-theoretic problem. We show that the Fourier transform, used to solve the Abelian hidden subgroup problem, is an example of an efficient elimination observable which eliminates a constant fraction of the candidate secret states with high probability. Finally, we show that elimination observables do not always exist by considering the geometry of the hidden subgroup states of the dihedral group D_N.
Photon echo is a fundamental tool for the manipulation of electromagnetic fields. Unavoidable spontaneous emission noise is generated in this process due to the strong rephasing pulse, which limits the achievable signal-to-noise ratio and represents a fundamental obstacle towards their applications in the quantum regime. Here we propose a noiseless photon-echo protocol based on a four-level atomic system. We implement this protocol in a Eu3+:Y2SiO5bcrystal to serve as an optical quantum memory. A storage fidelity of 0.952 is obtained for time-bin qubits encoded with single-photon-level coheren…
A hybrid quantum system consisting of spatially separated two-level atoms is studied. Two atoms do not interact directly, but they are coupled via an intermediate system which is consisting of a superconducting flux qubit interacting with a mechanical and an electrical resonator which are coupled to one of the atoms. Moreover, the superconducting flux qubit is driven by a classical microwave field. Applying the adiabatic elimination an effective Hamiltonian for the atomic subsystem is obtained. Our results demonstrate that the entanglement degradation decay as well as the fidelity decay in the…
We propose and analyze a physical implementation of two-qubit parity measurements as required for continuous error correction, assuming a setup in which the individual qubits are strongly coupled to separate optical cavities. A single optical probe beam scatters sequentially from the two cavities and the continuous parity measurement is realized via fixed quadrature homodyne photo-detection. We present models based on quantum stochastic differential equations (QSDE's) for both an ideal continuous parity measurement and our proposed cavity quantum electrodynamics (cavity QED) implementation; a …
A scheme is proposed for protecting quantum states from both independent decoherence and cooperative decoherence. The scheme operates by pairing each qubit (two-state quantum system) with an ancilla qubit and by encoding the states of the qubits into the corresponding coherence-preserving states of the qubit-pairs. In this scheme, the amplitude damping (loss of energy) is prevented as well as the phase damping (dephasing) by a strategy called the free-Hamiltonian-elimination We further extend the scheme to include quantum gate operations and show that loss and decoherence during the gate opera…
An ever broader range of physical platforms provides the possibility to study and engineer quantum dynamics under continuous measurements. In many experimental arrangements the system of interest is monitored by means of an ancillary device, whose sole purpose is to transduce the signal from the system to the measurement apparatus. Here, we present a method of adiabatic elimination when the transducer consists of an arbitrary number of bosonic modes with Gaussian dynamics while the measured object can be any quantum system. Crucially, our approach can cope with the highly relevant case of fini…
Adiabatic elimination methods allow the reduction of the space dimension needed to describe systems dynamics which exhibits separation of time scale. For open quantum system, it consists in eliminating the fast part assuming it has almost instantaneously reached its steady-state and obtaining an approximation of the evolution of the slow part. These methods can be applied to eliminate a linear subspace within the system Hilbert space, or alternatively to eliminate a fast subsystems in a bipartite quantum system. In this work, we extend an adiabatic elimination method used for removing fast deg…
In all lossy communication channels realized to date, information is inevitably leaked to a potential eavesdropper. Here we present a communication protocol that does not allow for any information leakage to a potential eavesdropper in a purely lossy channel. By encoding information into a restricted Gaussian alphabet of squeezed states we show, both theoretically and experimentally, that the Holevo information between the eavesdropper and the intended recipient can be exactly zero in a purely lossy channel while minimized in a noisy channel. This result is of fundamental interest, but might a…
We consider pure quantum states of N qubits and study the genuine N-qubit entanglement that is shared among all the N qubits. We introduce an information-theoretic measure of genuine N-qubit entanglement based on bipartite partitions. When N is an even number, this measure is presented in a simple formula, which depends only on the purities of the partially reduced density matrices. It can be easily computed theoretically and measured experimentally. When N is an odd number, the measure can also be obtained in principle.
Many physical implementations of quantum computers impose stringent memory constraints in which 2-qubit operations can only be performed between qubits which are nearest neighbours in a lattice or graph structure. Hence, before a computation can be run on such a device, it must be mapped onto the physical architecture. That is, logical qubits must be assigned physical locations in the quantum memory, and the circuit must be replaced by an equivalent one containing only operations between nearest neighbours. In this paper, we give a new technique for quantum circuit mapping (a.k.a. routing), ba…
Superconducting quantum circuits, fabricated with multiple layers, are proposed to implement perfect quantum state transfer between nodes of a hypercube network. For tunable devices such as the phase qubit, each node can transmit quantum information to any other node at a constant rate independent of the distance between qubits. The physical limits of quantum state transfer in this network are theoretically analyzed, including the effects of disorder, decoherence, and higher-order couplings.
Continuous quantum error correction has been found to have certain advantages over discrete quantum error correction, such as a reduction in hardware resources and the elimination of error mechanisms introduced by having entangling gates and ancilla qubits. We propose a machine learning algorithm for continuous quantum error correction that is based on the use of a recurrent neural network to identify bit-flip errors from continuous noisy syndrome measurements. The algorithm is designed to operate on measurement signals deviating from the ideal behavior in which the mean value corresponds to a…
The first part of the paper reviews applications of 2-spinor methods to relativistic qubits (analogies between tetrads in Minkowski space and 2-qubit states, qubits defined by means of null directions and their role for elimination of the Peres-Scudo-Terno phenomenon, advantages and disadvantages of relativistic polarization operators defined by the Pauli-Lubanski vector, manifestly covariant approach to unitary representations of inhomogeneous SL(2,C)). The second part deals with electromagnetic fields quantized by means of harmonic oscillator Lie algebras (not necessarily taken in irreducibl…
Quantum error correction codes play a central role in the realisation of fault-tolerant quantum computing. Chamon model is a 3D generalization of the toric code. The error correction computation on this model has not been explored so far. In this work, the Chamon model is turned to a non-CSS error correction code. Logical qubits are built by the construct of logical Pauli operators. The property of logical operators reveals the expressions of code distance. According to the topological properties of Chamon models, an error elimination algorithm is proposed. Based on the error elimination algor…
The first realization of solid state quantum computer was demonstrated recently by using artificial atoms -- transmons in superconducting resonator. Here, we propose a novel architecture of flexible and scalable quantum computer based on a waveguide circuit coupling many quantum nodes of controlled atomic ensembles. For the first time, we found the optimal practically attainable parameters of the atoms and circuit for 100{%} efficiency of quantum memory for multi qubit photon fields and confirmed experimentally the predicted perfect storage. Then we revealed self modes for reversible transfer …
A long-lived coherent state and non-linear interaction have been experimentally demonstrated for the vibrational mode of a trapped ion. We propose an implementation of quantum computation using coherent states of the vibrational modes of trapped ions. Differently from earlier experiments, we consider a far-off resonance for the interaction between external fields and the ion in a bidimensional trap. By appropriate choices of the detunings between the external fields, the adiabatic elimination of the ionic excited level from the Hamiltonian of the system allows for beam splitting between orthog…
How best one can recycle a given quantum resource, mitigating the various difficulties involved in its preparation and preservation, is of considerable importance for ensuring efficient applications in quantum technology. Here we demonstrate quantitatively the resource theoretic advantage of reusing a single copy of a two-qubit entangled state towards information processing. To this end, we consider a scenario of sequential entanglement detection of a given two-qubit state by multiple independent observers on each of the two spatially separated wings. In particular, we consider equal numbers o…

We realize and characterize a quantum-limited, directional Josephson amplifier suitable for qubit readout. The device consists of two nondegenerate, three-wave-mixing amplifiers that are coupled together in an interferometric scheme, embedded in a printed circuit board. Nonreciprocity is generated by applying a phase gradient between the same-frequency pumps feeding the device, which plays the role of the magnetic field in a Faraday medium. Directional amplification and reflection-gain elimination are induced via wave interference between multiple paths in the system. We measure and discuss th…
Information-theoretic uncertainty relations formulate the joint immeasurability of two non-commuting observables in terms of information entropies. The trade-off of the accuracy in the outcome of two successive measurements manifests in entropic noise-disturbance uncertainty relations. Recent theoretical analysis predicts that projective measurements are not optimal, with respect to the noise-disturbance trade-offs. Therefore the results in our previous letter [PRL 115, 030401 (2015)] are outperformed by general quantum measurements. Here, we experimentally test a tight information-theoretic m…

Circuit cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED) is proving to be a powerful platform to implement quantum feedback control schemes due to the ability to control superconducting qubits and microwaves in a circuit. Here, we present a simple and promising quantum feedback control scheme for deterministic generation and stabilization of a three-qubit $W$ state in the superconducting circuit QED system. The control scheme is based on continuous joint Zeno measurements of multiple qubits in a dispersive regime, which enables us not only to infer the state of the qubits for further information processin…
Quantum no-Hiding theorem, first proposed by Braunstein and Pati [Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 080502 (2007)], was verified experimentally by Samal et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 186, 080401 (2011)] using NMR quantum processor. Till then, this fundamental test has not been explored in any of the experimental architecture. Here, we demonstrate the above no-hiding theorem using the IBM 5Q quantum processor. Categorical algebra developed by Coecke and Duncan [New J. Phys. 13, 043016 (2011)] has been used for better visualization of the no-hiding theorem by analyzing the quantum circuit using the ZX calculus. T…
In this work we propose a novel numerical approach to decompose general quantum programs in terms of single- and two-qubit quantum gates with a $CNOT$ gate count very close to the current theoretical lower bounds. In particular, it turns out that $15$ and $63$ $CNOT$ gates are sufficient to decompose a general $3$- and $4$-qubit unitary, respectively, with high numerical accuracy. Our approach is based on a sequential optimization of parameters related to the single-qubit rotation gates involved in a pre-designed quantum circuit used for the decomposition. In addition, the algorithm can be ado…
Virtual states are a central concept in quantum mechanics. By definition, the probability of finding a quantum system in a virtual state should be vanishingly small at all times. In contrast to this notion, we report a phenomenon occurring in open quantum systems by which virtual states can acquire a sizable population in the long time limit, even if they are not directly coupled to any dissipative channel. This means that the situation where the virtual state remains unpopulated can be metastable. We describe this effect by introducing a two-step adiabiatic elimination method, that we termed …

Information-theoretic definitions for the noise associated with a quantum measurement and the corresponding disturbance to the state of the system have recently been introduced [F. Buscemi et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 112, 050401 (2014)]. These definitions are invariant under relabelling of measurement outcomes, and lend themselves readily to the formulation of state-independent uncertainty relations both for the joint estimate of observables (noise-noise relations) and the noise-disturbance tradeoff. Here we derive such relations for incompatible qubit observables, which we prove to be tight in t…
A current bottleneck for quantum computation is the realization of high-fidelity two-qubit quantum operations between two and more quantum bits in arrays of coupled qubits. Gates based on parametrically driven tunable couplers offer a convenient method to entangle multiple qubits by selectively activating different interaction terms in the effective Hamiltonian. Here, we study theoretically and experimentally a superconducting qubit setup with two transmon qubits connected via a capacitively coupled tunable bus. We develop a time-dependent Schrieffer-Wolff transformation and derive analytic ex…
Zero-knowledge and multi-prover systems are both central notions in classical and quantum complexity theory. There is, however, little research in quantum multi-prover zero-knowledge systems. This paper studies complexity-theoretical aspects of the quantum multi-prover zero-knowledge systems. This paper has two results: 1.QMIP* systems with honest zero-knowledge can be converted into general zero-knowledge systems without any assumptions. 2.QMIP* has computational quantum zero-knowledge systems if a natural computational conjecture holds. One of the main tools is a test (called the GHZ test) t…
In this study, a formal definition, robustness analysis and discussion on the control of a position-based semiconductor charge qubit are presented. Such a qubit can be realized in a chain of coupled quantum dots, forming a register of charge-coupled transistor-like devices, and is intended for CMOS implementation in scalable quantum computers. We discuss the construction and operation of this qubit, its Bloch sphere, and relation with maximally localized Wannier functions which define its position-based nature. We then demonstrate how to build a tight-binding model of single and multiple inter…
