A scheme is proposed for protecting quantum states from both independent decoherence and cooperative decoherence. The scheme operates by pairing each qubit (two-state quantum system) with an ancilla qubit and by encoding the states of the qubits into the corresponding coherence-preserving states of the qubit-pairs. In this scheme, the amplitude damping (loss of energy) is prevented as well as the phase damping (dephasing) by a strategy called the free-Hamiltonian-elimination We further extend the scheme to include quantum gate operations and show that loss and decoherence during the gate operations can also be prevented.
We argue that several claims of paper Phys. Rev. Lett 79, 1953 (1997), by Lu-Ming Duan and Guang-Can Guo, are questionable. In particular we stress that the environmental noise considered by the authors belongs to a very special class
Real quantum systems couple to their environment and lose their intrinsic quantum nature through the process known as decoherence. Here we present a method for minimizing decoherence by making it energetically unfavorable. We present a Hamiltonian made up solely of two-body interactions between four two-level systems (qubits) which has a two-fold degenerate ground state. This degenerate ground state has the property that any decoherence process acting on an individual physical qubit must supply energy from the bath to the system. Quantum information can be encoded into the degeneracy of the gr…
We describe a method for private database queries using exchange of quantum states with bits encoded in mutually incompatible bases. For technology with limited coherence time, the database vendor can announce the encoding after a suitable delay to allow the user to privately learn one of two items in the database without the ability to also definitely infer the second item. This quantum approach also allows the user to choose to learn other functions of the items, such as the exclusive-or of their bits, but not to gain more information than equivalent to learning one item, on average. This me…
Digital signatures can guarantee the unforgeability and transferability of the message. Different from classical digital signatures, whose security depends on computational complexity, quantum digital signatures (QDS) can provide information-theoretic security. We propose a general method of random pairing QDS (RP-QDS), which can drastically improve QDS efficiency. In a way, our random pairing method provide a tightened result of security level of QDS. In the method, the parity value of each pair is used for the outcome bit value. We present general formulas for fraction of untagged bits and e…
In the endeavour to make quantum computers a reality, integrated superconducting circuits have become a promising architecture. A major challenge of this approach is decoherence originating from spurious atomic tunneling defects at the interfaces of qubit electrodes, which may resonantly absorb energy from the qubit's oscillating electric field and reduce the qubit's energy relaxation time $T_1$. Here, we show that qubit coherence can be improved by tuning dominating defects away from the qubit resonance using an applied DC-electric field. We demonstrate a method that optimizes the applied fie…
We develop an analytical model for describing the dynamics of a donor-based charge quantum bit (qubit). As a result, the quantum decoherence of the qubit is analytically obtained and shown to reveal non-Markovian features: The decoherence rate varies with time and even attains negative values, generating a non-exponential decay of the electronic coherence and a later recoherence. The resulting coherence time is inversely proportional to the temperature, thus leading to low decoherence below a material dependent characteristic temperature.
A quantum cellular network with a qubit and ancilla bits in each cell is proposed. The whole circuit works only with the help of external optical pulse sequences. In the operation, some of the ancilla bits are activated, and autonomous single- and two-qubit operations are made. In the sleep mode of a cell, the decoherence of the qubit is negligibly small. Since only two cells at most are active at once, the coherence can be maintained for a sufficiently long time for practical purposes. A device structure using a quantum dot array with possible operation and measurement schemes is also propose…
Raman excited spin coherences were experimentally observed in N-V diamond color centers via nondegenerate four-wave mixing (NDFWM) and electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). The maximal absorption suppression was found to be 17%, which corresponds to 70% of what is possible given the random geometric orientation of the N-V center in diamond. In the context of quantum computing in solids, this level of transparency represents the efficient preparation of quantum bits (qubits), as well as ability to perform arbitrary single qubit rotations.
Bilayer quantum Hall systems can form collective states in which electrons exhibit spontaneous interlayer phase coherence. We discuss the possibility of using bilayer quantum dot many-electron states with this property to create two-level systems that have potential advantages as quantum bits.
We propose a scheme to measure the parity of two distant qubits, while ensuring that losses on the quantum channel between them does not destroy coherences within the parity subspaces. This capability enables deterministic preparation of highly entangled qubit states whose fidelity is not limited by the transmission loss. The key observation is that for a probe electromagnetic field in a particular quantum state, namely a superposition of two coherent states of opposite phases, the transmission loss stochastically applies a near-unitary back-action on the probe state. This leads to a parity me…
We investigate the coherence properties of individual nuclear spin quantum bits in diamond [Dutt et al., Science, 316, 1312 (2007)] when a proximal electronic spin associated with a nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center is being interrogated by optical radiation. The resulting nuclear spin dynamics are governed by time-dependent hyperfine interaction associated with rapid electronic transitions, which can be described by a spin-fluctuator model. We show that due to a process analogous to motional averaging in nuclear magnetic resonance, the nuclear spin coherence can be preserved after a large number o…
We compute on all quantum states several measures that characterise asymptotic quantum coherence manipulation under restricted classes of operations. We focus on the distillable coherence, i.e. the maximum rate of production of approximate pure bits of coherence starting from independent copies of an input state $ρ$, and on the coherence cost, i.e. the minimum rate of consumption of pure coherence bits that is needed to generate many copies of $ρ$ with vanishing error. We obtain the first closed-form expression for the distillable coherence under strictly incoherent operations (SIO), proving t…
This letter presents a two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR) approach for constructing a two-logical-qubit decoherence-free subspace (DFS) based on the fact that the three protons in a CH3 spin system can not be resolved in one-dimension NMR spectroscopy, but to a certain extent, can be distinguished by two-dimensional multiple-quantum NMR. We used four noisy physical nuclear spins, including three protons and one carbon in the CH3 spin system, to generate two decoherence-free logical quantum bits. It made full use of the unaddressed spins which could not be used in one-dimensional s…
The scalable application of quantum information science will stand on reproducible and controllable high-coherence quantum bits (qubits). Here, we revisit the design and fabrication of the superconducting flux qubit, achieving a planar device with broad frequency tunability, strong anharmonicity, high reproducibility, and relaxation times in excess of $40\,μ$s at its flux-insensitive point. Qubit relaxation times $T_1$ across 22 qubits are consistently matched with a single model involving resonator loss, ohmic charge noise, and 1/f flux noise, a noise source previously considered primarily in…
We give the first systematic study on the second order asymptotics of the operational task of coherence distillation with and without assistance. In the unassisted setting, we introduce a variant of randomness extraction framework where free incoherent operations are allowed before the incoherent measurement and the randomness extractors. We then show that the maximum number of random bits extractable from a given quantum state is precisely equal to the maximum number of coherent bits that can be distilled from the same state. This relation enables us to derive tight second order expansions of…
We study the ground state properties of the one-dimensional extended Hubbard model at half-filling from the perspective of its particle reduced density matrix. We focus on the reduced density matrix of $2$ fermions and perform an analysis of its quantum correlations and coherence along the different phases of the model. Specifically, we study its (i) entanglement entropy, (ii) $\ell_1$ norm of coherence, (iii) irreducible two-body cumulant matrix and (iv) entanglement spectrum. Our results show that these different properties are complementary to each other depending on the phase of the system…
We outline selected trends and results in theoretical modeling of quantum systems in support of the developing research field of quantum information processing. The resulting modeling tools have been applied to semiconductor materials and nanostructures that show promise for implementation of coherent, controlled quantum dynamics at the level of registers of several quantum bits (qubits), such as spins. Many-body field-theoretical techniques have been utilized to address a spectrum of diverse research topics. Specifically, the theory of decoherence and more generally the origin and effects of …
Donor electron spins in semiconductors make exceptional quantum bits because of their long coherence times and compatibility with industrial fabrication techniques. Despite many advances in donor-based qubit technology, it remains difficult to selectively manipulate single donor electron spins. Here, we show that by replacing the prevailing semiconductor host material (silicon) with germanium, donor electron spin qubits can be electrically tuned by more than an ensemble linewidth, making them compatible with gate addressable quantum computing architectures. Using X-band pulsed electron spin re…
Several physical realizations of quantum bits have been proposed. Of those, nano-electronic devices appear most suitable for large-scale integration and potential applications. We suggest to use low-capacitance Josephson junctions, exploiting the coherence of tunneling in the superconducting state combined with the possibility to control individual charges by Coulomb blockade effects (cond-mat/9706016,cond-mat/9808067). These systems constitute quantum bits, with logical states differing by one Cooper-pair charge. Single- and two-bit operations can be performed by applying a sequence of gate v…
Topological phases are often characterized by special edge states confined near the boundaries by an energy gap in the bulk. On raising temperature, these edge states are lost in a clean system due to mobile thermal excitations. Recently however, it has been established that disorder can localize an isolated many body system, potentially allowing for a sharply defined topological phase even in a highly excited state. Here we show this to be the case for the topological phase of a one dimensional magnet with quenched disorder, which features spin one-half excitations at the edges. The time evol…
Three-dimensional arrays of silicon transistors increase the density of bits. Solid-state qubits are much larger so could benefit even more from using the third dimension given that useful fault-tolerant quantum computing will require at least 100,000 physical qubits and perhaps one billion. Here we use laser writing to create 3D arrays of nitrogen-vacancy centre (NVC) qubits in diamond. This would allow 5 million qubits inside a commercially available 4.5x4.5x0.5 mm diamond based on five nuclear qubits per NVC and allowing $(10 μm)^3$ per NVC to leave room for our laser-written electrical con…
