We study scalarization of spherically symmetric neutral reflecting shells in the scalar-tensor gravity. We consider neutral static massless scalar fields non-minimally coupled to the Gauss-Bonnet invariant. We obtain a relation representing the existence regime of hairy neutral reflecting shells. For parameters unsatisfying this relation, the massless scalar field cannot exist outside the neutral reflecting shell. In the parameter region where this relation holds, we get analytical solutions of scalar field hairs outside neutral reflecting shells.
In regularized 4-dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet (EGB) gravity derived from a Kaluza-Klein reduction of higher-dimensional EGB theory, we study the existence and stability of black hole (BH) solutions on a static and spherically symmetric background. We show that asymptotically-flat hairy BH solutions realized for a spatially-flat maximally symmetric internal space are unstable against linear perturbations for any rescaled GB coupling constant. This instability is present for the angular propagation of even-parity perturbations both in the vicinity of an event horizon and at spatial infinity…
We study the stability of (4+1)-dimensional charged Gauss-Bonnet black holes and solitons. We observe an instability related to the condensation of a scalar field and construct explicit "hairy" black hole and soliton solutions of the full system of coupled field equations. We investigate the cases of a massless scalar field as well as that of a tachyonic scalar field. The solitons with scalar hair exist for a particular range of the charge and the gauge coupling. This range is such that for intermediate values of the gauge coupling a "forbidden band" of charges for the hairy solitons exists. W…
We study the system constructed by charged scalar fields linearly coupled to asymptotically flat horizonless compact reflecting stars. We obtain bounds on the charge of the scalar field, below which the scalar hairy star is expected to suffer from nonlinear instabilities. It means that scalar hairy regular configurations are unstable for scalar fields of small charge. For the highly-charged star, there are also bounds on radii of regular compact reflecting stars. When the star radius is below the bound, the hairy star is always unstable.
We study a hairy black hole solution in the dilatonic Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory of gravitation, in which the Gauss-Bonnet term is non-minimally coupled to the dilaton field. Hairy black holes with spherical symmetry seem to be easily constructed with a positive Gauss-Bonnet coefficient $α$ within the coupling function, $f(ϕ) = αe^{γϕ}$, in an asymptotically flat spacetime, i.e., no-hair theorem seems to be easily evaded in this theory. Therefore, it is natural to ask whether this construction can be expanded into the case with the negative coefficient $α$. In this paper, we present numerica…
We study the axial quasinormal modes of hairy black holes in Gauss-Bonnet gravity with massive self-interacting scalar field. Two coupling functions of the scalar field to the Gauss-Bonnet invariant are adopted with one of them leading to black hole scalarization. The axial perturbations are studied via time evolution of the perturbation equation, and the effect of the scalar field mass and the self-interaction constant on the oscillation frequency and damping time is examined. We study as well the effect of nonzero scalar field potential on the critical point at which the perturbation equatio…
Supported by the use of a regular scalar field we find a black hole solution in the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet model. From the obtained solution we can recover the Schwarzschild black hole as in other works. Later, by implementing the odd parity perturbations method we study the stability of the linearized equations of motion of the model, we find the explicit form of the Regge-Wheeler potential and we explore the condition of vanishing perturbations at the horizon of the black hole. We test the stability of the obtained solution by checking the positivity condition of the Regge-Wheeler potential. …
We study instabilities of the system composed of stationary scalar fields and asymptotically flat horizonless reflecting compact stars. In the probe limit, we obtain bounds on the scalar field frequency. Below this bound, stationary hairy stars are expected to suffer from nonlinear instabilities under massless field perturbations. In other words, we prove that stationary scalar hairy stars are unstable for scalar fields with small frequency.
We study condensation behaviors of static scalar fields in the regular asymptotically AdS reflecting star spacetime. With analytical methods, we provide upper bounds for the radii of the scalar hairy reflecting stars. Above the bound, there is no scalar hair theorem for the star. Below the bound, we numerically obtain charged scalar hairy reflecting star solutions and in particular, the radii of the hairy stars are discrete, which is similar to known results in other reflecting object backgrounds. For every set of parameters, we search for the largest AdS hairy star radius, study effects of pa…
We explore charged black hole solutions in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity in five dimensions, with a charged scalar hair. We interpret such hairy black holes as the final state of the superradiant instability previously reported for this system. We explore the relation of the hairy black hole solutions with the non-backreacting quasibound states and scalar clouds, as well as with the boson star solutions.
It has recently been proved that nontrivial couplings between scalar fields and the Gauss-Bonnet invariant of a curved spacetime may allow a central black hole to support spatially regular scalar hairy configurations. Interestingly, former numerical studies of the intriguing black-hole spontaneous scalarization phenomenon have demonstrated that the composed hairy black-hole-scalar-field configurations exist if and only if the dimensionless coupling parameter $\barη$ of the theory belongs to a discrete set $\{[\barη^{-}_{n},\barη^{+}_{n}]\}_{n=0}^{n=\infty}$ of scalarization bands. We have exam…
Scalar-tensor theories of gravity where a new scalar degree of freedom couples to the Gauss-Bonnet invariant can exhibit the phenomenon of spontaneous black hole scalarization. These theories admit both the classic black holes predicted by general relativity as well as novel hairy black hole solutions. The stability of the hairy black holes is strongly dependent on the precise form of the scalar-gravity coupling. A radial stability investigation revealed that all scalarized black hole solutions are unstable when the coupling between the scalar field and the Gauss-Bonnet invariant is quadratic …
We investigate the interior of the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet charged black-hole with scalar hair. We find a variety of dynamical epochs, with the particular important feature that the Cauchy horizon is not present. This makes the violation of the no-hair theorem a possible tool to understand how might the strong cosmic censorship conjecture work.
No-hair theorems for scalar-tensor theories imply that the trivial scalar field configuration is the unique configuration around stationary black hole spacetimes. The most basic assumption in these theorems is that a constant scalar configuration is actually admissible. In this paper, we classify shift-symmetric Horndeski theories according to whether or not they admit the trivial scalar configuration as a solution and under which conditions. Local Lorentz symmetry and the presence of a linear coupling between the scalar field and Gauss-Bonnet invariant plays feature prominently in this classi…
It has been previously shown that a Gauss-Bonnet term non-minimally coupled to a scalar field produces a scalarised black hole solution, which can be considered as having secondary scalar hair, parametrised in terms of the black hole's mass and charge. In this paper we extend a previously investigated linear coupling of the form $f(ϕ)=ϕ$ to a non-minimally coupled Maxwell term, with the form $\frac{1}{8}F_{μν}F^{μν}+βϕF_{μν}F^{μν}$. By using numerical methods the solutions to the full differential equations are found, as well as a perturbative expansion in the $r\rightarrow\infty$ limit and a …
In the present paper we consider multi-scalar extension of Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. We focus on multi-scalar Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet models whose target space is a three-dimensional maximally symmetric space, namely either $\mathbb{S}^3$, $\mathbb{H}^3$ or $\mathbb{R}^3$, and in the case when the map $\text{\it spacetime} \to \text{\it target space}$ is nontrivial. We prove numerically the existence of black holes in this class of models for several Gauss-Bonnet coupling functions, including the case of scalarization. We also perform systematic study of a variety of black hole characterist…
Scalar hair of black holes in theories with a shift symmetry are constrained by the no-hair theorem of Hui and Nicolis, assuming spherical symmetry, time-independence of the scalar field and asymptotic flatness. The most studied counterexample is a linear coupling of the scalar with the Gauss-Bonnet invariant. However, in this case the norm of the shift-symmetry current $J^2$ diverges at the horizon casting doubts on whether the solution is physically sound. We show that this is not an issue since $J^2$ is not a scalar quantity, since $J^μ$ is not a diff-invariant current in the presence of Ga…
Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet-gravity (EGB) coupled minimally to a $U(1)$ gauged, massive scalar field possesses -- for appropriate choices of the $U(1)$ charge -- black hole solutions that carry charged scalar hair if the frequency of the harmonic time-dependence of the scalar field is equal to the upper bound on the superradiant frequency. The existence of these solutions has first been discussed in \cite{Grandi:2017zgz}. In this paper, we demonstrate that the critical value of the scalar charge results from the requirement of non-extremality of the charged black hole solutions and the fact that the…
The Einstein-Klein-Gordon Lagrangian is supplemented by a non-minimal coupling of the scalar field to specific geometric invariants : the Gauss-Bonnet term and the Chern-Simons term. The non-minimal coupling is chosen as a general quadratic polynomial in the scalar field and allows - depending on the parameters - for large families of hairy black holes to exist. These solutions are characterized, namely, by the number of nodes of the scalar function. The fundamental family encompasses black holes whose scalar hairs appear spontaneously and solutions presenting shift-symmetric hairs. When suppl…
We study the system of static scalar fields coupled to charged compact reflecting stars through both analytical and numerical methods. We enclose the star in a box and our solutions are related to cases without box boundaries when putting the box far away from the star. We provide bottom and upper bounds for the radius of the scalar hairy compact reflecting star. We obtain numerical scalar hairy star solutions satisfying boundary conditions and find that the radius of the hairy star in a box is continuous in a range, which is very different from cases without box boundaries where the radius is…
We study scalar condensations around asymptotically Anti-de Sitter(AdS) regular reflecting shells. We show that the charged scalar field can condense around charged reflecting shells with both Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions. In particular, the radii of the asymptotically AdS hairy shells are discrete, which is similar to cases in asymptotically flat spacetimes. We also provide upper bounds for the radii of the hairy Dirichlet reflecting shells and above the bound, the scalar field cannot condense around the shell.
We investigate scalar condensations around noncommutative compact reflecting stars. We find that the neutral noncommutative reflecting star cannot support the existence of scalar field hairs. In the charged noncommutative reflecting star spacetime, we provide upper bounds for star radii. Above the bound, scalar fields cannot exist outside the star. In contrast, when the star radius is below the bound, we show that the scalar field can condense. We also obtain the largest radii of scalar hairy reflecting stars.
We study static massive scalar field condensations in the regular asymptotically flat reflecting star background. We impose Neumann reflecting surface boundary conditions for the scalar field. We show that the no hair theorem holds in the neutral reflecting star background. For charged reflecting stars, we provide bounds for radii of hairy reflecting stars. Below the lower bound, there is no regular compact reflecting star and a black hole will form. Above the upper bound, the scalar field cannot condense around the reflecting star or no hair theorems exist. And in between the bounds, we obtai…
We study the stability of static, hyperbolic Gauss-Bonnet black holes in (4+1)-dimensional Anti-de-Sitter (AdS) space-time against the formation of scalar hair. Close to extremality the black holes possess a near-horizon topology of AdS_2 x H^3 such that within a certain range of the scalar field mass one would expect that they become unstable to the condensation of an uncharged scalar field. We confirm this numerically and observe that there exists a family of hairy black hole solutions labelled by the number of nodes of the scalar field function. We construct explicit examples of solutions w…
It has recently been demonstrated that black holes with spatially regular horizons can support external scalar fields (scalar hairy configurations) which are non-minimally coupled to the Gauss-Bonnet invariant of the curved spacetime. The composed black-hole-scalar-field system is characterized by a critical existence line $α=α(μr_{\text{H}})$ which, for a given mass of the supported scalar field, marks the threshold for the onset of the spontaneous scalarization phenomenon [here $\{α,μ,r_{\text{H}}\}$ are respectively the dimensionless non-minimal coupling parameter of the field theory, the p…
We analyze condensation behaviors of neutral scalar fields outside horizonless reflecting stars in the Einstein-Maxwell-scalar gravity. It was known that minimally coupled neutral scalar fields cannot exist outside horizonless reflecting stars. In this work, we consider non-minimal couplings between scalar fields and Maxwell fields, which is included to aim to trigger formations of scalar hairs. We analytically demonstrate that there is no hair theorem for small coupling parameters below a bound. For large coupling parameters above the bound, we numerically obtain regular scalar hairy configur…
We perform a thorough study of the thermodynamic properties of a class of Lovelock black holes with conformal scalar hair arising from coupling of a real scalar field to the dimensionally extended Euler densities. We study the linearized equations of motion of the theory and describe constraints under which the theory is free from ghosts/tachyons. We then consider, within the context of black hole chemistry, the thermodynamics of the hairy black holes in the Gauss-Bonnet and cubic Lovelock theories. We clarify the connection between isolated critical points and thermodynamic singularities, fin…
The Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity in five dimensions is extended by scalar fields and the corresponding equations are reduced to a system of non-linear differential equations. A large family of regular solutions of these equations is shown to exist. Generically, these solutions are spinning black holes with scalar hairs. They can be characterized (but not uniquely) by an horizon and an angular velocity on this horizon. Taking particular limits the black holes approach boson star or become extremal, in any case the limiting configurations remain hairy.
We investigate the fragmentation instability of hairy black holes in the theory with a Gauss$-$Bonnet(GB) term in asymptotically flat spacetime. Our approach is through the non-perturbative fragmentation instability. By this approach, we investigate whether the initial black hole can be broken into two black holes by comparing the entropy of the initial black hole with the sum of those of two fragmented black holes. The relation between the black hole instability and the GB coupling with dilaton hair are presented. We describe the phase diagrams with respect to the mass of the black hole solut…
Recently, by considering nontrivial couplings between scalar fields and the Gauss-Bonnet invariant, the Schwarzschild black hole may allow regular scalar hairy configurations. The numerical studies of this spontaneous scalarization phenomenon show if the coupling parameter $\barη$ belongs to discrete sets $\barη\in\{\barη^-_n,\barη^+_n\}^{n=\infty}_{n=0}$, the black hole can support regular scalar hairy configurations. Interestingly, Hod finds the coupling parameter $\barη^+_n$ which correspond to the black hole linearized scalar field configurations has an asymptotic universal behavior $Δ_n\e…
We propose a class of higher-derivative gravities that can be viewed as the Gauss-Bonnet extension of the Starobinsky model. The theory admits the Minkowski spacetime vacuum whose linear spectrum consists of the graviton and a massive scalar mode. In addition to the usual Schwarzschild black hole, we use numerical analysis to establish that in some suitable mass range, new black holes carrying the massive scalar hair can emerge. The new black hole serves as a "wall" separating the naked spacetime singularity and wormholes in the parameter space of the scalar hair. Our numerical results also in…
We study the perturbative behaviour of topological black holes in the presence of a cosmological constant and a scalar field coupled to the Gauss-Bonnet term. We calculate both analytically and numerically the quasi-normal modes of scalar perturbations in the extended scalar-tensor-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. In the case of small black holes we find a phase transition of the topological black hole to a hairy configuration.
We study scalarization of horizonless neutral compact reflecting stars. In our model, the scalar hair can be induced by the coupling of static scalar fields to the Gauss-Bonnet invariant. We analytically obtain lower bounds on the coupling parameter. Below the bound, the static scalar hair cannot form. And above the bound, we numerically get the discrete coupling parameter that can support scalar hairs outside stars. We also disclose effects of model parameters on the discrete coupling parameter.
We study the existence of scalar fields outside neutral reflecting shells. We consider static massive scalar fields non-minimally coupled to the Gauss-Bonnet invariant. We analytically investigated properties of scalar fields through the scalar field equation. In the small scalar field mass regime, we derive a compact resonance formula for the allowed masses of scalar fields in the composed scalar field and shell configurations.
It has recently been proved numerically that spinning black holes in Einstein-scalar theories which are characterized by a non-minimal negative coupling of the scalar field to the Gauss-Bonnet invariant of the curved spacetime may develop exponentially growing instabilities. Intriguingly, it has been demonstrated that this tachyonic instability, which marks the onset of the spontaneous scalarization phenomenon in the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet-scalar theory, characterizes spinning black holes whose dimensionless angular momentum parameter ${\bar a}\equiv a/M$ is larger than some critical value ${\b…
We holographically investigate the scalarization in the Einstein-Scalar-Gauss-Bonnet gravity with a negative cosmological constant. We find that instability exists for both Schwarzschild-AdS and Reissner-Nordstrom-AdS black holes with planar horizons when we have proper interactions between the scalar field and the Gauss-Bonnet curvature corrections. We relate such instability to possible holographic scalarization and construct the corresponding hairy black hole solutions in the presence of the cosmological constant. Employing the holographic principle we expect that such bulk scalarization co…
We study charged, static, topological black holes in pure Gauss-Bonnet gravity in asymptotically AdS space. As in general relativity, the theory possesses a unique nondegenerate AdS vacuum. It also admits charged black hole solutions which asymptotically behave as the Reissner-Nordström AdS black hole. We discuss black hole thermodynamics of these black holes. Then we study phase transitions in a dual quantum field theory in four dimensions, with the Stückelberg scalar field as an order parameter. We find in the probe limit that the black hole can develop hair below some critical temperature, …
In full Horndeski theories, we show that the static and spherically symmetric black hole (BH) solutions with a static scalar field~$ϕ$ whose kinetic term~$X$ is nonvanishing on the BH horizon are generically prone to ghost/Laplacian instabilities. We then search for asymptotically Minkowski hairy BH solutions with a vanishing $X$ on the horizon free from ghost/Laplacian instabilities. We show that models with regular coupling functions of $ϕ$ and $X$ result in no-hair Schwarzschild BHs in general. On the other hand, the presence of a coupling between the scalar field and the Gauss-Bonnet (GB) …
We consider the action principles that are the lower dimensional limits of the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity {\it via} the Kaluza-Klein route. We study the vacua and obtain some exact solutions. We find that the reality condition of the theories may select one vacuum over the other from the two vacua that typically arise in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. We obtain exact black hole and cosmological solutions carrying scalar hair, including scalar hairy BTZ black holes with both mass and angular momentum turned on. We also discuss the holographic central charges in the asymptotic AdS backgrounds…
Scalar fields coupled to the Gauss-Bonnet invariant evade the known no-hair theorems and have nontrivial configurations around black holes. We focus on a scalar field that couples linearly to the Gauss-Bonnet invariant and hence exhibits shift symmetry. We study its dynamical evolution and the formation of scalar hair in a Schwarzschild background. We show that the evolution eventually settles to the known static hairy solutions in the appropriate limit.
The Einstein-Maxwell-Klein-Gordon Lagrangian is supplemented by a non-minimal coupling of the real scalar field to the Gauss-Bonnet invariant. The non minimal coupling function is chosen as a general second degree polynomial in the scalar field for which the system is known to admit hairy black holes. The new interaction leads naturally to a violation of the null energy condition, allowing for wormholes to exist without the need of exotic matter. Spherically symmetric, charged wormholes are constructed and their domain of existence is determined in terms of the different choices of the non-min…
Recently, a new nonlinear mechanism for black hole scalarization, different from the standard spontaneous scalarization, was demonstrated to exist for scalar Gauss-Bonnet theories in which no tachyonic instabilities can occur. Thus Schwarzschild black hole is linearly stable but instead nonlinear instability can kick-in. In the present paper we extend on this idea in the case of multi-scalar Gauss-Bonnet gravity with exponential coupling functions of third and fourth leading order in the scalar field. The main motivation comes from the fact that these theories admit hairy compact objects with …
Spontaneous scalarization of black holes in scalar-Gauss-Bonnet (sGB) gravity is a very interesting phenomenon allowing black holes to circumvent the no-hair theorem and acquire scalar hair while leaving the weak field regime of the theory practically unaltered. It was recently shown that if we allow for a different form of the coupling between the scalar field and the Gauss-Bonnet invariant, a new type of scalarization is possible beyond the standard one that can be excited only nonlinearly. In this case the spectrum of black hole solutions can be more complicated, naturally opening the quest…
We study linear perturbations about non rotating black hole solutions in scalar-tensor theories, more specifically Horndeski theories. We consider two particular theories that admit known hairy black hole solutions. The first one, Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet theory, contains a Gauss-Bonnet term coupled to a scalar field, and its black hole solution is given as a perturbative expansion in a small parameter that measures the deviation from general relativity. The second one, known as 4-dimensional-Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory, can be seen as a compactification of higher-dimensional Lovelock the…
