Space-division multiplexing is a promising technology in optical fibre communication to improve the transmission capacity of a single optical fibre. However, the number of channels that can be multiplexed is limited by the crosstalks between channels, and the multiplexing is only applied to few-mode or multi-core fibres. Here, we propose a high-spatial-density channel multiplexing framework employing deep learning for standard multimode fibres (MMF). We present a proof-of-concept experimental system, consisting of a single light source, a single digital-micromirror-device modulator, a single detection camera, and a deep convolutional neural network (CNN) to demonstrate up to 400-channel simultaneous data transmission with accuracy close to 100% over MMFs of different types, diameters and lengths. A novel scalable semi-supervised learning model is proposed to adapt the CNN to the time-varying MMF information channels in real-time, to overcome the environmental changes such as temperature variations and vibrations, and to reconstruct the input data from complex crosstalks among hundreds of channels. This deep-learning based approach is promising to maximize the use of the spatial dimension of MMFs, and to break the present number-of-channel limit in space-division multiplexing for future high-capacity MMF transmission data links.
Multimode optical fibres are enjoying a renewed attention, boosted by the urgent need to overcome the current capacity crunch of single-mode fibre systems and by recent advances in multimode complex nonlinear optics [1-13]. In this work, we demonstrate that standard multimode fibres can be used as ultrafast all-optical tool for transverse beam manipulation of high power laser pulses. Our experimental data show that the Kerr effect in a graded-index multimode fibre is the driving mechanism for overcoming speckle distortions, leading to a somewhat counter-intuitive effect resulting in a spatiall…
The use of short lengths of large core phosphate glass fibre, doped with high concentrations of Er or Er:Yb represents an attractive route to achieving high power erbium doped fibre amplifiers (EDFAs) and lasers (EDFLs). With the aim of investigating the potential of achieving diffraction limited output from such large core fibres, we present experimental results of fundamental mode propagation through a 20 cm length of passive 300 micrometer core multimode fibre when the input is a well-aligned Gaussian beam. Through careful control of fibre geometry, input beam parameters and alignment, we m…
A method is proposed to experimentally determine principal modes for mode division multiplexing in a multimode optical fiber, i.e., increasing optical fiber information capacity via higher-order transverse eigenmodes. Principal modes are a special linear combination of eigenmodes that do not exhibit mode dispersion up to first order in frequency. This method is based on an SU(N) representation of mode dispersion whereby the generators of the corresponding SU(N) Lie algebra, i.e., generalized Gell-Mann matrices, predict higher-order Stokes parameters which can be used to measure principal modes…
The optical transport of images through a multimode fibre remains an outstanding challenge with applications ranging from optical communications to neuro-imaging. State of the art approaches either involve measurement and control of the full complex field transmitted through the fibre or, more recently, training of artificial neural networks that however, are typically limited to image classes belong to the same class as the training data set. Here we implement a method that statistically reconstructs the inverse transformation matrix for the fibre. We demonstrate imaging at high frame rates, …
Leveraging the spatial modes of multimode waveguides using mode-division multiplexing (MDM) on an integrated photonic chip allows unprecedented scaling of bandwidth density for on-chip communication. Switching channels between waveguides is critical for future scalable optical networks, but its implementation in multimode waveguides must address how to simultaneously control modes with vastly different optical properties. Here we present a platform for switching signals between multimode waveguides based on individually processing the spatial mode channels using single-mode elements. Using thi…
Disorder and scattering in photonic systems have long been considered a nuisance that should be circumvented. Recently, disorder has been harnessed for a rapidly growing number of applications, including imaging, sensing and spectroscopy. The chaotic dynamics and extreme sensitivity to external perturbations make random media particularly well-suited for optical cryptography. However, using random media for distribution of secret keys between remote users still remains challenging, since it requires the users have access to the same scattering system. Here we utilize random mode mixing in mult…
Optical communications technology has made enormous and steady progress for several decades, providing the key resource in our increasingly information-driven society and economy. Much of this progress has been in finding innovative ways to increase the data carrying capacity of a single optical fibre. In this search, researchers have explored (and close to maximally exploited) every available degree of freedom, and even commercial systems now utilize multiplexing in time, wavelength, polarization, and phase to speed more information through the fibre infrastructure. Conspicuously, one potenti…
Beam self-cleaning (BSC) in graded-index (GRIN) multimode fibres (MMFs) has been recently reported by different research groups. Driven by the interplay between Kerr effect and beam self-imaging, BSC counteracts random mode coupling, and forces laser beams to recover a quasi-single mode profile at the output of GRIN fibres. Here we show that the associated self-induced spatiotemporal reshaping allows for improving the performances of nonlinear fluorescence microscopy and endoscopy using multimode optical fibres. We experimentally demonstrate that the beam brightness increase, induced by self-c…
Reconfigurable quantum circuits are fundamental building blocks for the implementation of scalable quantum technologies. Their implementation has been pursued in linear optics through the engineering of sophisticated interferometers. While such optical networks have been successful in demonstrating the control of small-scale quantum circuits, scaling up to larger dimensions poses significant challenges. Here, we demonstrate a potentially scalable route towards reconfigurable optical networks based on the use of a multimode fibre and advanced wavefront-shaping techniques. We program networks in…
Results of optical frequency transfer over a carrier-grade dense-wavelength-division-multiplexing (DWDM) optical fibre network are presented. The relation between soil temperature changes on a buried optical fibre and frequency changes of an optical carrier through the fibre is modelled. Soil temperatures, measured at various depths by the Royal Netherlands Meteorology Institute (KNMI) are compared with observed frequency variations through this model. A comparison of a nine-day record of optical frequency measurements through the 2 x 298 km fibre link with soil temperature data shows qualitat…
When light propagates through opaque material, the spatial information it holds becomes scrambled, but not necessarily lost. Two classes of techniques have emerged to recover this information: methods relying on optical memory effects, and transmission matrix (TM) approaches. Here we develop a general framework describing the nature of memory effects in structures of arbitrary geometry. We show how this framework, when combined with wavefront shaping driven by feedback from a guide-star, enables estimation of the TM of any such system. This highlights that guide-star assisted imaging is possib…
Holographic wavefront manipulation enables converting hair-thin multimode optical fibres into minimally invasive lensless imaging instruments conveying much higher information densities than conventional endoscopes. Their most prominent applications focus on accessing delicate environments, including deep brain compartments, and recording micrometre-scale resolution images of structures in close proximity to the distal end of the instrument. Here, we introduce an alternative 'farfield' endoscope, capable of imaging macroscopic objects across a large depth of field. The endoscope shaft with dim…
We experimentally demonstrate a record net capacity per wavelength of 1.23~Tb/s over a single silicon-on-insulator (SOI) multimode waveguide for optical interconnects employing on-chip mode-division multiplexing and 11$\times$11 multiple-in-multiple-out (MIMO) digital signal processing.
The optical fibre is an essential tool for our communication infrastructure since it is the main transmission channel for optical communications. The latest major advance in optical fibre technology is spatial division multiplexing (SDM), where new fibre designs and components establish multiple co-existing data channels based on light propagation over distinct transverse optical modes. Simultaneously, there have been many recent developments in the field of quantum information processing (QIP), with novel protocols and devices in areas such as computing, communication and metrology. Here, we …
For the past forty years, optical fibres have found widespread use in ground-based and space-based instruments. In most applications, these fibres are used in conjunction with conventional optics to transport light. But photonics offers a huge range of optical manipulations beyond light transport that were rarely exploited before 2001. The fundamental obstacle to the broader use of photonics is the difficulty of achieving photonic action in a multimode fibre. The first step towards a general solution was the invention of the photonic lantern (Leon-Saval, Birks & Bland-Hawthorn 2005) and the de…
Multimode fibres offer the advantages of high resolution and miniaturization over single mode fibers in the field of optical imaging. However, multimode fibre's imaging is susceptible to perturbations of MMF that can lead to secondary spatial distortions in the transmitted image. Perturbations include random disturbances in the fiber as well as environmental noise. Here, we exploit the fast focusing capability of the Cake-Cutting Hadamard coding algorithm to counteract the effects of perturbations and improve the system's robustness. Simulation shows that it can approach the theoretical enhanc…
Multimode fibres (MMFs) are attracting interest for complex spatiotemporal dynamics, and for ultrafast fibre sources, imaging and telecommunications. This new interest is based on three key properties: their high spatiotemporal complexity (information capacity), the important role of disorder, and complex intermodal interactions. To date, phenomena in MMFs have been studied only in limiting cases where one or more of these properties can be neglected. Here we study MMFs in a regime in which all these elements are integral. We observe a spatial beam-cleaning process preceding spatiotemporal mod…
Time-of-flight (ToF) 3D imaging has a wealth of applications, from industrial inspection to movement tracking and gesture recognition. Depth information is recovered by measuring the round-trip flight time of laser pulses, which usually requires projection and collection optics with diameters of several centimetres. In this work we shrink this requirement by two orders of magnitude, and demonstrate near video-rate 3D imaging through multimode optical fibres (MMFs) - the width of a strand of human hair. Unlike conventional imaging systems, MMFs exhibit exceptionally complex light transport rese…
Multiplexing multiple orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes of light has the potential to increase data capacity in optical communication. However, the distribution of such modes over long distances remains challenging. Free-space transmission is strongly influenced by atmospheric turbulence and light scattering, while the wave distortion induced by the mode dispersion in fibers disables OAM demultiplexing in fiber-optic communications. Here, a deep-learning-based approach is developed to recover the data from scattered OAM channels without measuring any phase information. Over a 1-km-long stan…
Progress in neuroscience constantly relies on the development of new techniques to investigate the complex dynamics of neuronal networks. An ongoing challenge is to achieve minimally-invasive and high-resolution observations of neuronal activity in vivo inside deep brain areas. A perspective strategy is to utilise holographic control of light propagation in complex media, which allows converting a hair-thin multimode optical fibre into an ultra-narrow imaging tool. Compared to current endoscopes based on GRIN lenses or fibre bundles, this concept offers a footprint reduction exceeding an order…
A low intensity light beam emerges from a graded-index, highly multimode optical fibre with a speckled shape, while at higher intensity the Kerr nonlinearity may induce a spontaneous spatial self-cleaning of the beam [1,2]. Here, we reveal that we can generate two self-cleaned beams with a mutual coherence large enough to produce a clear stable fringe pattern at the output of a nonlinear interferometer. The two beams are pumped by the same input laser, yet are self-cleaned into independent multimode fibres. We thus prove that the self-cleaning mechanism preserves the beams' mutual coherence vi…
Multimode fibres (MMF) are remarkable high-capacity information channels owing to the large number of transmitting fibre modes, and have recently attracted significant renewed interest in applications such as optical communication, imaging, and optical trapping. At the same time, the optical transmitting modes inside MMFs are highly sensitive to external perturbations and environmental changes, resulting in MMF transmission channels being highly variable and random. This largely limits the practical application of MMFs and hinders the full exploitation of their information capacity. Despite gr…
We demonstrate that photonic lanterns based on tapered multicore fibres provide an efficient way to couple multimode states of light to a two-dimensional array of Single-Photon Avalanche Detectors (SPADs), each of which has its own Time-to-Digital Converter (TDC) for Time-Correlated Single-Photon-Counting (TCSPC). Exploiting this capability, we demonstrate multiplexed single-mode wavelength-to-time conversion of multimode states of light using a multicore-fibre photonic lantern with 121 single-mode cores, coupled in a one-to-one fashion to 121 SPADS on a 32 $\times$ 32 pixel CMOS SPAD array. We report on the development of a compact (volume $\approx$ 100\:cm$^3$), multimode diffraction-limited Raman spectrograph and probe designed to be compact as possible. The spectrograph uses `off the shelf' optics, a custom 3D-printed two-part housing and harnesses a multi-core fibre (MCF) photonic lantern (multimode to few-mode converter), which slices a large 40~\textmu m multimode input into a near-diffraction-limited 6~\textmu m aperture. Our unique design utilises the hexagonal geometry of our MCF, permitting high multimode collection efficiency with near-diffraction-limited performance i…
Envisioning more compact and cost accessible astronomical instruments is now possible with existing photonic technologies like specialty optical fibres, photonic lanterns and ultrafast laser inscribed chips. We present an original design of a multicore fibre (MCF) terminated with multimode photonic lantern ports. It is designed to act as a relay fibre with the coupling effciency of a multimode fibre, modal stability similar to a single-mode fibre and low loss in a wide range of wavelengths (380 nm to 860 nm). It provides phase and amplitude scrambling to achieve a stable near field and far fie…
Space-division multiplexing (SDM), whereby multiple spatial channels in multimode and multicore optical fibers are used to increase the total transmission capacity per fiber, is being investigated to avert a data capacity crunch and reduce the cost per transmitted bit. With the number of channels employed in SDM transmission experiments continuing to rise, there is a requirement for integrated SDM components that are scalable. Here, we demonstrate a cladding-pumped SDM erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) that consists of six uncoupled multimode erbium-doped cores. Each core supports three spat…
The thin and flexible nature of optical fibres often makes them the ideal technology to view biological processes in-vivo, but current microendoscopic approaches are limited in spatial resolution. Here, we demonstrate a new route to high resolution microendoscopy using a multicore fibre (MCF) with an adiabatic multimode-to-singlemode photonic lantern transition formed at the distal end by tapering. We show that distinct multimode patterns of light can be projected from the output of the lantern by individually exciting the single-mode MCF cores, and that these patterns are highly stable to fib…

In this work, how the noise contaminates signals propagating in an optical fibre is discussed in the nonlinear spectral domain after applying the nonlinear Fourier transform. Simulation results about how the soliton parameters in the nonlinear spectral domain perturb is shown.
Predictions and measurements of a multimode waveguide interferometer operating in a fibre coupled, ``dual-mode'' regime are reported. With a 1.32 micrometer source, a complete switching cycle of the output beam is produced by a 10.0 nanometer incremental change in the 8.0 micrometer width of the hollow planar mirror waveguide. This equates to a fringe spacing of $\simλ/130$. This is an order of magnitude smaller than previously reported results for this form of interferometer.
This paper reports on the modal noise characterisation of a hybrid reformatter. The device consists of a multicore-fibre photonic lantern and an ultrafast laser-inscribed slit reformatter. It operates around 1550 nm and supports 92 modes. Photonic lanterns transform a multimode signal into an array of single-mode signals, and thus combine the high coupling efficiency of multimode fibres with the diffraction-limited performance of single-mode fibres. This paper presents experimental measurements of the device point spread function properties under different coupling conditions, and its throughp…
We propose and experimentally demonstrate parallel LiDAR using random intensity fluctuations from a highly multimode laser. We optimize a degenerate cavity to have many spatial modes lasing simultaneously with different frequencies. Their spatio-temporal beating creates ultrafast random intensity fluctuations, which are spatially demultiplexed to generate hundreds of uncorrelated time traces for parallel ranging. The bandwidth of each channel exceeds 10 GHz, leading to a ranging resolution better than 1 cm. Our parallel random LiDAR is robust to cross-channel interference, and will facilitate …
Helical gratings (HGs) have an achievement of flexible mode conversion for fibre guided orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes. Sampled reflection HGs can realise the generation and conversion of OAM mode with comb spectra. They can be used to simultaneously filter wavelengths and convert modes, and thus may be applied to the hybrid multiplexing technology with wavelength division multiplexing and mode division multiplexing.
We propose to use a multimode optical fiber with a D-shaped cross section as a privileged system to image wavefunctions of a chaotic system. Scar modes are in particular the sub ject of our investigations. We study their imprints on the statistics of intensity and we show how the introduction of a localized gain region in the fiber is used to perform a selective excitation of scar modes.
Image transmission through multimode optical fibers has been an area of immense interests driven by the demand for miniature endoscopes in biomedicine and higher speed and capacity in telecommunications. Conventionally, a complex-valued transmission matrix is obtained experimentally to link the input and output light fields of a multimode fiber for image retrieval, which complicates the experimental setup and increases the computational complexity. Here, we report a simple and high-speed method for image retrieval based on our discovery of a pseudo-linearity between the input and output light …
In multimode fiber transmission systems, mode-dependent loss and gain (collectively referred to as MDL) pose fundamental performance limitations. In the regime of strong mode coupling, the statistics of MDL (expressed in decibels or log power gain units) can be described by the eigenvalue distribution of zero-trace Gaussian unitary ensemble in the small-MDL region that is expected to be of interest for practical long-haul transmission. Information-theoretic channel capacities of mode-division-multiplexed systems in the presence of MDL are studied, including average and outage capacities, with …
In the regime of strong mode coupling, the modal gains and losses and the modal group delays of a multimode fiber are known to have well-defined statistical properties. In mode-division multiplexing, mode-dependent gains and losses are known to cause fluctuations in the channel capacity, so that the capacity at finite outage probability can be substantially lower than the average capacity. Mode-dependent gains and losses, when frequency-dependent, have a coherence bandwidth that is inversely proportional to the modal group delay spread. When mode-division-multiplexed signals occupy a bandwidth…
Efficient generation of single photons is one of the key challenges of building photonic quantum technology, such as quantum computers and long-distance quantum networks. Photon source multiplexing -- where successful pair generation is heralded by the detection of one of the photons, and its partner is routed to a single mode output -- has long been known to offer a concrete solution, with output probability tending toward unity as loss is reduced. Here, we present a temporally multiplexed integrated single photon source based on a silicon waveguide and a low-loss fibre switch and loop archit…
Single photons are a vital resource for photonic quantum information processing. However, even state-of-the-art single photon sources based on photon-pair generation and heralding detection have only a low probability of delivering a single photon when one is requested. We analyse a scheme that uses a switched fibre delay loop to increase the delivery probability per time bin of single photons from heralded sources. We show that, for realistic experimental parameters, combining the output of up to 15 pulses can yield a performance improvement of a factor of 10. We consider the future performan…
