We give a lower bound for the Lorentz length of the ADM energy-momentum vector (ADM mass) of 3-dimensional asymptotically flat initial data sets for the Einstein equations. The bound is given in terms of linear growth `spacetime harmonic functions' in addition to the energy-momentum density of matter fields, and is valid regardless of whether the dominant energy condition holds or whether the data possess a boundary. A corollary of this result is a new proof of the spacetime positive mass theorem for complete initial data or those with weakly trapped surface boundary, and includes the rigidity statement which asserts that the mass vanishes if and only if the data arise from Minkowski space. The proof has some analogy with both the Witten spinorial approach as well as the marginally outer trapped surface (MOTS) method of Eichmair, Huang, Lee, and Schoen. Furthermore, this paper generalizes the harmonic level set technique used in the Riemannian case by Bray, Stern, and the second and third authors, albeit with a different class of level sets. Thus, even in the time-symmetric (Riemannian) case a new inequality is achieved.
We prove uniqueness, existence, and regularity results for maximal hypersurfaces in spacetimes with a conformal completion at timelike infinity and asymptotically constant scalar curvature, as relevant for asymptotically AdS spacetimes. This work is dedicated to Yvonne Choquet-Bruhat on the occasion of her upcoming 99th birthday.
We derive necessary conditions for the spinorial Witten-Nester energy to be well-defined for asymptotically locally AdS spacetimes. We find that the conformal boundary should admit a spinor satisfying certain differential conditions and in odd dimensions the boundary metric should be conformally Einstein. We show that these conditions are satisfied by asymptotically AdS spacetimes. The gravitational energy (obtained using the holographic stress energy tensor) and the spinorial energy are equal in even dimensions and differ by a bounded quantity related to the conformal anomaly in odd dimension…
The spacetime $AdS_2 \times S^2$ is well known to arise as the 'near horizon' geometry of the extremal Reissner-Nordstrom solution, and for that reason it has been studied in connection with the AdS/CFT correspondence. Here we consider asymptotically $AdS_2 \times S^2$ spacetimes that obey the null energy condition (or a certain averaged version thereof). Supporting a conjectural viewpoint of Juan Maldacena, we show that any such spacetime must have a special geometry similar in various respects to $AdS_2 \times S^2$, and under certain circumstances must be isometric to $AdS_2 \times S^2$.
We define the total energy-momenta for (4+1)-dimensional asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes, and prove the positive energy theorem for such spacetimes.
It is well known that the spacetime $\text{AdS}_2\times S^2$ arises as the `near horizon' geometry of the extremal Reisser-Nordstrom solution, and for that reason it has been studied in connection with the AdS/CFT correspondence. Motivated by a conjectural viewpoint of Juan Maldacena, the authors in [4] studied the rigidity of asymptotically $\text{AdS}_2\times S^2$ spacetimes satisfying the null energy condition. In this paper, we take an entirely different and more general approach to the asymptotics based on the notion of conformal infinity. This involves a natural modification of the usual…
We establish the positive energy theorem for weak asymptotically anti-de Sitter initial data sets with distributional curvature under the weak dominant energy condition.
We formulate the variational problem for AdS gravity with Dirichlet boundary conditions and demonstrate that the covariant counterterms are necessary to make the variational problem well-posed. The holographic charges associated with asymptotic symmetries are then rederived via Noether's theorem and `covariant phase space' techniques. This allows us to prove the first law of black hole mechanics for general asymptotically locally AdS black hole spacetimes. We illustrate our discussion by computing the conserved charges and verifying the first law for the four dimensional Kerr-Newman-AdS and th…
We formulate and prove the Lorentzian version of the positive mass theorems with arbitrary negative cosmological constant for asymptotically AdS spacetimes. This work is the continuation of the second author's recent work on the positive mass theorem on asymptotically hyperbolic 3-manifolds.
Adapting Israel's proof of static black hole uniqueness, we show that the Schwarzschild spacetime is the only static vacuum asymptotically flat spacetime that possesses a suitably defined photon sphere.
We establish the inequality for Henneaux-Teitelboim's total energy-momentum for asymptotically anti-de Sitter initial data sets which are asymptotic to arbitrary $t$-slice in anti-de Sitter spacetime. In particular, when $t=0$, it generalizes Chruściel-Maerten-Tod's inequality in the center of AdS mass coordinates. We also show that the determinant of energy-momentum endomorphism ${\bf Q}$ is the geometric invariant of asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes.
We provide a partial characterization of the conformal infinity of asymptotically de Sitter spacetimes by deriving constraints that relate the asymptotics of the stress-energy tensor with conformal geometric data. The latter is captured using recently defined objects, called higher conformal fundamental forms. For the boundary hypersurface, these generalize to higher order the trace-free part of the second form.
We classify noncompact homogeneous spaces which are Einstein and asymptotically harmonic. This completes the classification of Riemannian harmonic spaces in the homogeneous case: Any simply connected homogeneous harmonic space is flat, or rank-one symmetric, or a nonsymmetric Damek-Ricci space. Independently, Y. Nikolayevsky has obtained the latter classification under the additional assumption of nonpositive sectional curvatures.
In this note, we study a geometric property of asymptotically Minkowski spacetimes and an analytic property of the Klein-Gordon operator. Precisely, our first main results show that asymptotically Minkowski spacetimes are geodesically complete under a null non-trapping condition. Secondly, we prove that Sobolev index of a real principal type estimate used in the previous work is actually optimal.
An explicit lower bound for the mass of an asymptotically flat Riemannian 3-manifold is given in terms of linear growth harmonic functions and scalar curvature. As a consequence, a new proof of the positive mass theorem is achieved in dimension three. The proof has parallels with both the Schoen-Yau minimal hypersurface technique and Witten's spinorial approach. In particular, the role of harmonic spinors and the Lichnerowicz formula in Witten's argument is replaced by that of harmonic functions and a formula introduced by the fourth named author in recent work, while the level sets of harmoni…
I'll describe a general geometric setup allowing for a generalization of Rehren duality to asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes whose classical matter distribution is sufficiently well-behaved as to prevent the occurence of singularities in the sense of null geodesic incompleteness. I'll also comment on the issues involved in the reconstruction of an additive and locally covariant bulk net of observables from a corresponding boundary net in this more general situation.
In the first part of this work we show a uniqueness result for globally hyperbolic spacetimes with a spacelike conformal boundary satisfying the vacuum Einstein equations with positive cosmological constant. Then we present applications of this result in the contexts of cosmic censorship and the initial value problem in general relativity. Further extensions of this result to non-vacuum solutions of the Einstein equations are also studied. On the other hand, the second half of this thesis deals with spacetimes with timelike boundary. We first develop the causal theory of such spacetimes and th…
In the present paper, we investigate Busemann functions in a general Finsler setting as well as in asymptotically harmonic Finsler manifolds. In particular, we show Busemann functions are smooth on asymptotically harmonic Finsler manifolds.
Let (M,g) be a complete, simply connected Riemannian manifold of dimension 3 without conjugate points. We show that M is a hyperbolic manifold of constant sectional curvature, provided M is asymptotically harmonic of constant h > 0.
Generalizing the result of Li and Tam for the hyperbolic spaces, we prove an existence theorem on the Dirichlet problem for harmonic maps with $C^1$ boundary conditions at infinity between asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds.
The null splitting theorem (proved in math.DG/9909158) is discussed. As an application, a uniqueness theorem for Minkowski space and for de Sitter space associated with the occurrence of null lines (inextendible globally achronal null geodesics) is presented.
Let $(M,g)$ be a complete, simply connected Riemannian manifold of dimension 3 without conjugate points. We show that $M$ is a flat manifold, provided $M$ is asymptotically harmonic of constant $h = 0$.
In this article we consider asymptotically harmonic manifolds which are simply connected complete Riemannian manifolds without conjugate points such that all horospheres have the same constant mean curvature $h$. We prove the following equivalences for asymptotically harmonic manifolds $X$ under the additional assumption that their curvature tensor together with its covariant derivative are uniformly bounded: (a) $X$ has rank one; (b) $X$ has Anosov geodesic flow; (c) $X$ is Gromov hyperbolic; (d) $X$ has purely exponential volume growth with volume entropy equals $h$. This generalizes earlier…
Asymptotically harmonic manifolds are simply connected complete Riemannian manifolds without conjugate points such that all horospheres have the same constant mean curvature $h$. In this article we present results for harmonic functions on rank one asymptotically harmonic manifolds $X$ with mild curvature boundedness conditions. Our main results are (a) the explicit calculation of the Radon-Nykodym derivative of the visibility measures, (b) an explicit integral representation for the solution of the Dirichlet problem at infinity in terms of these visibility measures, and (c) a result on horosp…
We study asymptotically harmonic manifolds of negative curvature, without any cocompactness or homogeneity assumption. We show that asymptotic harmonicity provides a lot of information on the asymptotic geometry of these spaces: in particular, we determine the volume entropy, the spectrum and the relative densities of visual and harmonic measures on the ideal boundary. Then, we prove an asymptotic analogue of the classical mean value property of harmonic manifolds, and we characterize asymptotically harmonic manifolds, among Cartan-Hadamard spaces of strictly negative curvature, by the existen…
We study the space of Killing fields on the four dimensional AdS spacetime $AdS^{3,1}$. Two subsets $\mathcal{S}$ and $\mathcal{O}$ are identified: $\mathcal{S}$ (the spinor Killing fields) is constructed from imaginary Killing spinors, and $\mathcal{O}$ (the observer Killing fields) consists of all hypersurface orthogonal, future timelike unit Killing fields. When the cosmology constant vanishes, or in the Minkowski spacetime case, these two subsets have the same convex hull in the space of Killing fields. In presence of the cosmology constant, the convex hull of $ \mathcal{O}$ is properly co…
Asymptotic behavior of energy of a harmonic map defined on an asymptotically hyperbolic manifold is considered. Using the growth of energy, we show that a harmonic map defined on some asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds has to be constant if the total energy is finite, or if the map approaches a point fast enough, in terms of a defining function for the boundary.
We use planar coordinates as well as hyperbolic coordinates to separate the de Sitter spacetime into two parts. These two ways of cutting the de Sitter give rise to two different spatial infinities. For spacetimes which are asymptotic to either half of the de Sitter spacetime, we are able to provide definitions of the total energy, the total linear momentum, the total angular momentum, respectively. And we prove two positive mass theorems, corresponding to these two sorts of spatial infinities, for spacelike hypersurfaces whose mean curvatures are bounded by certain constant from above.
We use Busemann functions to construct volume preserving mappings in an asymptotically harmonic manifold. If the asymptotically harmonic manifold satisfies the visibility condition, we construct mappings which preserve distances in some directions. We also prove that some integrals on the intersection of horospheres are independent of the differences between the values of the corresponding Busemann functions and we establish an upper bound of the volume of the intersection of two horospheres which is independent of the difference between values of corresponding Busemann functions.
A complete Riemannian manifold without conjugate points is called asymptotically harmonic if the mean curvature of its horospheres is a universal constant. Examples of asymptotically harmonic manifolds include flat spaces and rank one locally symmetric spaces of noncompact type. In this paper we show that this list exhausts the compact asymptotically harmonic manifolds under a variety of assumptions including nonpositive curvature or Gromov hyperbolic fundamental group. We then present a new characterization of symmetric spaces amongst the set of all visibility manifolds
We consider weakly and strongly asymptotically mean value harmonic (amv-harmonic) functions on subriemannian and RCD settings. We demonstrate that, in non-collapsed RCD-spaces with vanishing metric measure boundary, Cheeger harmonic functions are weakly amv-harmonic and that, in Carnot groups, weak amv-harmonicity equivalently characterizes harmonicity in the sense of the sub-Laplacian. In homogeneous Carnot groups of step $2$, we prove a Blaschke-Privaloff-Zaremba type theorem. Similar results are discussed in the settings of Riemannian manifolds and for Alexandrov surfaces.
In this paper, we deal with harmonic metrics with respect to generalized Kantowski-Sachs type spacetime metrics. We also consider the Sasaki, horizontal and complete lifts of generalized Kantowski-Sachs type spacetime metrics to tangent bundle and study their harmonicity.
In a recent work it was shown that conformal Carroll geometries are canonically equipped with a null-tractor bundle generalizing the tractor bundle of conformal geometry. We here show that in the case of the conformal boundary of an asymptotically flat spacetime of any dimension d>=3, this null-tractor bundle over null infinity can be canonically derived from the interior spacetime geometry. As was previously discussed, compatible normal connections on the null-tractor bundle are not unique: We prove that they are in fact in one-to-one correspondence with the germ of the asymptotically flat sp…
The paper proves that any asymptotically shearfree congruence at the conformal infinity (scri) in a (2,2)-signature spacetime is determined locally by a solution to the pair of forced inviscid Burgers' equations L_u+LL_x=σ(u,x,y,L) and M_u+MM_y=σ'(u,x,y,M) where u,x,y are Bondi coordinates of scri. The functions σ and σ' are determined naturally by the projective structure on the α and β surfaces that foliate scri.
Consider an asymptotically flat Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ of dimension $n \geq 3$ with nonempty compact boundary. We recall the harmonic conformal class $[g]_h$ of the metric, which consists of all conformal rescalings given by a harmonic function raised to an appropriate power. The geometric significance is that every metric in $[g]_h$ has the same pointwise sign of scalar curvature. For this reason, the harmonic conformal class appears in the study of general relativity, where scalar curvature is related to energy density. Our purpose is to introduce and study invariants of the harmonic co…
We consider the long-time behaviour of the mean curvature flow of spacelike hypersurfaces in the Lorentzian product manifold $M\times\mathbb{R}$, where $M$ is asymptotically flat. If the initial hypersurface $F_0\subset M\times\mathbb{R}$ is uniformly spacelike and asymptotic to $M\times\left\{s\right\}$ for some $s\in\mathbb{R}$ at infinity, we show that a mean curvature flow starting at $F_0$ exists for all times and converges uniformly to $M\times\left\{s\right\}$ as $t\to \infty$.
