We formulate and prove the Lorentzian version of the positive mass theorems with arbitrary negative cosmological constant for asymptotically AdS spacetimes. This work is the continuation of the second author's recent work on the positive mass theorem on asymptotically hyperbolic 3-manifolds.
We define the total energy-momenta for (4+1)-dimensional asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes, and prove the positive energy theorem for such spacetimes.
We establish the positive energy theorem for weak asymptotically anti-de Sitter initial data sets with distributional curvature under the weak dominant energy condition.
We establish the inequality for Henneaux-Teitelboim's total energy-momentum for asymptotically anti-de Sitter initial data sets which are asymptotic to arbitrary $t$-slice in anti-de Sitter spacetime. In particular, when $t=0$, it generalizes Chruściel-Maerten-Tod's inequality in the center of AdS mass coordinates. We also show that the determinant of energy-momentum endomorphism ${\bf Q}$ is the geometric invariant of asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes.
We provide a partial characterization of the conformal infinity of asymptotically de Sitter spacetimes by deriving constraints that relate the asymptotics of the stress-energy tensor with conformal geometric data. The latter is captured using recently defined objects, called higher conformal fundamental forms. For the boundary hypersurface, these generalize to higher order the trace-free part of the second form.
We study global aspects of complete, non-singular asymptotically locally AdS spacetimes solving the vacuum Einstein equations whose conformal infinity is an arbitrary globally stationary spacetime. It is proved that any such solution which is asymptotically stationary to the past and future is itself globally stationary. This gives certain rigidity or uniqueness results for exact AdS and related spacetimes.
We construct transformations which take asymptotically AdS hyperbolic initial data into asymptotically flat initial data, and which preserve relevant physical quantities. This is used to derive geometric inequalities in the asymptotically AdS hyperbolic setting from counterparts in the asymptotically flat realm, whenever a geometrically motivated system of elliptic equations admits a solution. The inequalities treated here relate mass, angular momentum, charge, and horizon area.
The spacetime $AdS_2 \times S^2$ is well known to arise as the 'near horizon' geometry of the extremal Reissner-Nordstrom solution, and for that reason it has been studied in connection with the AdS/CFT correspondence. Here we consider asymptotically $AdS_2 \times S^2$ spacetimes that obey the null energy condition (or a certain averaged version thereof). Supporting a conjectural viewpoint of Juan Maldacena, we show that any such spacetime must have a special geometry similar in various respects to $AdS_2 \times S^2$, and under certain circumstances must be isometric to $AdS_2 \times S^2$.
We derive necessary conditions for the spinorial Witten-Nester energy to be well-defined for asymptotically locally AdS spacetimes. We find that the conformal boundary should admit a spinor satisfying certain differential conditions and in odd dimensions the boundary metric should be conformally Einstein. We show that these conditions are satisfied by asymptotically AdS spacetimes. The gravitational energy (obtained using the holographic stress energy tensor) and the spinorial energy are equal in even dimensions and differ by a bounded quantity related to the conformal anomaly in odd dimension…
We formulate the variational problem for AdS gravity with Dirichlet boundary conditions and demonstrate that the covariant counterterms are necessary to make the variational problem well-posed. The holographic charges associated with asymptotic symmetries are then rederived via Noether's theorem and `covariant phase space' techniques. This allows us to prove the first law of black hole mechanics for general asymptotically locally AdS black hole spacetimes. We illustrate our discussion by computing the conserved charges and verifying the first law for the four dimensional Kerr-Newman-AdS and th…
We prove uniqueness, existence, and regularity results for maximal hypersurfaces in spacetimes with a conformal completion at timelike infinity and asymptotically constant scalar curvature, as relevant for asymptotically AdS spacetimes. This work is dedicated to Yvonne Choquet-Bruhat on the occasion of her upcoming 99th birthday.
Adapting Israel's proof of static black hole uniqueness, we show that the Schwarzschild spacetime is the only static vacuum asymptotically flat spacetime that possesses a suitably defined photon sphere.
It is well known that the spacetime $\text{AdS}_2\times S^2$ arises as the `near horizon' geometry of the extremal Reisser-Nordstrom solution, and for that reason it has been studied in connection with the AdS/CFT correspondence. Motivated by a conjectural viewpoint of Juan Maldacena, the authors in [4] studied the rigidity of asymptotically $\text{AdS}_2\times S^2$ spacetimes satisfying the null energy condition. In this paper, we take an entirely different and more general approach to the asymptotics based on the notion of conformal infinity. This involves a natural modification of the usual…
We prove two theorems, announced in hep-th/0108170, for static spacetimes that solve Einstein's equation with negative cosmological constant. The first is a general structure theorem for spacetimes obeying a certain convexity condition near infinity, analogous to the structure theorems of Cheeger and Gromoll for manifolds of non-negative Ricci curvature. For spacetimes with Ricci-flat conformal boundary, the convexity condition is associated with negative mass. The second theorem is a uniqueness theorem for the negative mass AdS soliton spacetime. This result lends support to the new positive …
We prove the existence of asymptotically hyperbolic solutions to the vacuum Einstein constraint equations with a marginally outer trapped boundary of positive mean curvature, using the constant mean curvature conformal method. As an application of this result, we verify the Penrose inequality for certain perturbations of Schwarzschild Anti-de Sitter black hole initial data.
We prove that an $(n+1)$-dimensional spin static vacuum with negative cosmological constant whose null infinity has a boundary admitting a non-trivial Killing spinor field is the AdS spacetime. As a consequence, we generalize previous uniqueness results by X. Wang \cite{Wa2} and by Chru{ś}ciel-Herzlich \cite{CH} and introduce, for this class of spin static vacua, some Lorentzian manifolds which are prohibited as null infinities.
In this note, we study a geometric property of asymptotically Minkowski spacetimes and an analytic property of the Klein-Gordon operator. Precisely, our first main results show that asymptotically Minkowski spacetimes are geodesically complete under a null non-trapping condition. Secondly, we prove that Sobolev index of a real principal type estimate used in the previous work is actually optimal.
In this paper, based on an intrinsic definition of asymptotically AdS space-times, we show that the standard anti-de Sitter space-time is the unique strictly stationary asymptotically AdS solution to the vacuum Einstein equations with negative cosmological constant in dimension less than 7. Instead of using the positive energy theorem for asymptotically hyperbolic spaces our approach appeals to the classic positive mass theorem for asymptotically flat spaces.
I'll describe a general geometric setup allowing for a generalization of Rehren duality to asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes whose classical matter distribution is sufficiently well-behaved as to prevent the occurence of singularities in the sense of null geodesic incompleteness. I'll also comment on the issues involved in the reconstruction of an additive and locally covariant bulk net of observables from a corresponding boundary net in this more general situation.
