We show that an interacting two-spin model subjected to two circularly polarized drives enables a feasible realization of a correlated topological phase in synthetic dimensions. The topological observable is given by a quantized frequency conversion between the dynamical drives, which is why we coin it the interacting topological frequency converter (ITFC). The ITFC is characterized by the interplay of interaction and synthetic dimension. This gives rise to striking topological phenomena that have no counterpart in the noninteracting regime. By calculating the topological phase diagrams as a function of interaction strength, we predict an enhancement of frequency conversion as a direct manifestation of the correlated topological response of the ITFC.
Thermoelectric materials intrigue much interest due to their wide range of application such as power generators and refrigerators. The efficiency of thermoelectric materials is quantified by the figure of merit, and a figure greater than unity is desired. To achieve this, a large Seebeck coefficient and low phonon thermal conductivity are required. We show that this can be achieved with a thin film of topological nodal line semimetals. We also discusses the correlation effect and spin current induced by a temperature gradient. The obtained results provide insight for the improvement of thermoe…
Recent studies have shown that topological models with interacting anyonic quasiparticles can be used as self-correcting quantum memories. Here we study the behaviour of these models at thermal equilibrium. It is found that the interactions allow topological order to exist at finite temperature, not only in an extension of the ground state phase but also in a novel form of topologically ordered phase. Both phases are found to support self-correction in all models considered, and the transition between them corresponds to a change in the scaling of memory lifetime with system size.
Chiral surface states in topological insulators are robust against interactions, non-magnetic disorder and localization, yet topology does not yield protection in transport. This work presents a theory of interacting topological insulators in an external electric field, starting from the quantum Liouville equation for the many-body density matrix. Out of equilibrium, topological insulators acquire a current-induced spin polarization. Electron-electron interactions renormalize the non-equilibrium spin polarization and charge conductivity, and disorder in turn enhances this renormalization by a …
We propose a topological order parameter for interacting topological insulators, expressed in terms of the full Green's functions of the interacting system. We show that it is exactly quantized for a time reversal invariant topological insulator, and it can be experimentally measured through the topological magneto-electric effect. This topological order parameter can be applied to both interacting and disordered systems, and used for determining their phase diagrams.
Interacting disordered zigzag graphene nanoribbons have fractional charges, are quasi-one-dimensional, and display an exponentially small gap. Our numerical computations showed that the topological entanglement entropy of these systems has a small finite but universal value, independent of the strength of the interaction and the disorder. The result that was obtained for the topological entanglement entropy shows that the disorder-free phase is critical and becomes unstable in the presence of disorder.
The topological Anderson and Mott insulators are two phases that have so far been separately and widely explored beyond topological band insulators. Here we combine the two seemingly different topological phases into a system of spin-1/2 interacting fermionic atoms in a disordered optical lattice. We find that the topological Anderson and Mott insulators in the noninteracting and clean limits can be adiabatically connected without gap closing in the phase diagram of our model. Lying between the two phases, we uncover a disordered correlated topological insulator, which is induced from a trivia…
The one dimensional closed interacting Kitaev chain and the dimerized version are studied. The topological invariants in terms of Green's function are calculated by the density matrix renormalization group method and the exact diagonalization method. For the interacting Kitaev chain, we point out that the calculation of topological invariant in the charge density wave phase must consider the dimerized configuration of the ground states. The variation of topological invariant are attributed to the poles of eigenvalues of the zero-frequency Green's functions. For the interacting dimerized Kitaev…
We argue that the entanglement Chern number proposed recently is invariant under the adiabatic deformation of a gapped many-body groundstate into a {\it disentangled/purified} one, which implies a partition of the Chern number into subsystems (disentangled Chern number). We generalize the idea to another topological number, the Z$_2$ Berry phase for a system with particle-hole symmetry, and apply it to a groundstate in a weak topological phase where the Chern number vanishes but the groundstate nevertheless has edge states. This entanglement Berry phase is especially useful for characterizing …
Quantum dots are one of the paradigmatic solid-state systems for quantum engineering, providing an outstanding tunability to explore fundamental quantum phenomena. Here we show that non-Hermitian many-body topological modes can be realized in a quantum dot chain by utilizing a gate-tunable modulation of dissipation, and they emerge purely because of the non-Hermiticity. By exactly solving the non-Hermitian interacting description both with exact diagonalization and tensor-networks, we demonstrate that these topological modes are robust even in the presence strong interactions, leading to a str…
After briefly recalling the quantum entanglement-based view of topological phases of matter in order to outline the general context, we give an overview of different approaches to the classification problem of topological insulators and superconductors of non-interacting Fermions. In particular, we review in some detail general symmetry aspects of the "ten-fold way" which forms the foundation of the classification, and put different approaches to the classification in relationship with each other. We end by briefly mentioning some of the results obtained on the effect of interactions, mainly i…
Strong nonmagnetic impurities on the surface of three-dimensional topological insulators (TIs) generate localized resonance peaks close to the Dirac point. We show that this results in a strongly reduced critical Coulomb interaction strength to reach a magnetic surface state, following a Stoner-like criterion. Thus even weakly interacting TIs host a finite (local) magnetization around strong nonmagnetic impurities. The local magnetization gives rise to a global energy gap, linearly dependent on the maximum value of the magnetization but decreasing with reduced impurity concentration.
An attempt is made to find different emergent quantum phases for interacting topological state of quantum matter. Our study is based on the quantum field theoretical renormalization group (RG) calculations. The behaviour of the RG flow lines gives the emergence of different quantum phases for non-interacting and interacting topological state of quantum matter. We show explicitly electron-electron interaction can turn a topologically trivial phase into a non-trivial one and also topological non-trivial phase to topological trivial phase. We show that physics of emergent is go beyond the quantum…
A fundamental open problem in condensed matter physics is how the dichotomy between conventional and topological band insulators is modified in the presence of strong electron interactions. We show that there are 6 new electronic topological insulators that have no non-interacting counterpart. Combined with the previously known band-insulators, these produce a total of 8 topologically distinct phases. Two of the new topological insulators have a simple physical description as Mott insulators in which the electron spins form spin analogs of the familiar topological band-insulator. The remaining…
We study the topological properties of the two-body bound states in an interacting Haldane model as a function of interparticle interactions. In particular, we identify topological phases where the two-body edge states have either the same or the opposite chirality as compared to single-particle edge states. We highlight that in the moderately interacting regime, which is relevant for the experimental realization with ultracold atoms, the topological transition is affected by the internal structure of the bound state, and the phase boundaries are consequently deformed.
Quantum systems are often described by parameter-dependent Hamiltonians. Points in parameter space where two levels are degenerate can carry a topological charge. Here we theoretically study an interacting two-spin system where the degeneracy points form a nodal loop or a nodal surface in the magnetic parameter space, similarly to such structures discovered in the band structure of topological semimetals. We determine the topological charge distribution along these degeneracy geometries. We show that these non-point-like degeneracy patterns can be obtained not only by fine-tuning, but they can…

We present a functional renormalization group approach to interacting topological Green function invariants with a focus on the nature of transitions. The method is applied to chiral symmetric fermion chains in the Mott limit that can be driven into a Haldane phase. We explicitly show that the transition to this phase is accompanied by a zero of the fermion Green function. Our results for the phase boundary are quantitatively benchmarked against DMRG data.
We introduce the topological mirror excitonic insulator as a new type of interacting topological crystalline phase in one dimension. Its mirror-symmetry-protected topological properties are driven by exciton physics, and it manifests in the quantized bulk polarization and half-charge modes on the boundary. And the bosonization analysis is performed to demonstrate its robustness against strong correlation effects in one dimension. Besides, we also show that Rashba nanowires and Dirac semimetal nanowires could provide ideal experimental platforms to realize this new topological mirror excitonic …
Haldane model is a noninteracting model for spinless fermions showing nontrivial topological properties. Effect of the electron-electron interaction on the topological phase poses an intriguing question. By means of the Hartree-Fock mean field, the exact diagonalization and the constrained-path Monte Carlo methods we mapped out the phase diagram of the interacting Haldane model. It is found that interaction breaks down the topological phase and drives the system into the charge-density-wave state. Sequence of the two transitions depends on the strength of next-nearest-neighbor hopping. Many-bo…
We study the interaction effects on thin films of topological mirror Kondo insulators (TMKI), where the strong interaction is expected to play an important role. Our study has led to the following results: (1) We identify a rich phase diagram of non-interacting TMKI with different mirror Chern numbers in the monolayer and bilayer thin films; (2) We obtain the phase diagram with interaction and identify the regimes of interaction parameters to mimic bosonic symmetry protected topological phases with either gapless bosonic modes or spontaneous mirror symmetry breaking at the boundary; (3) For th…
A topological superconducting wire with an effective time reversal symmetry is known to have a $\mathbb{Z}_8$ topological classification in the presence of interactions. The topological index $|n| \le 4$ counts the number of Majorana end states, negative $n$ corresponding to end states that are odd under time reversal. If such a wire is weakly coupled to a normal-metal lead, interactions induce a Kondo-like correlated state if $|n| = 4$. We show that the Kondo-like state manifests itself in an anomalous temperature dependence of the zero-bias conductance and by an anomalous Fano factor for the…
$\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological insulators for photons and in general bosons cannot be strictly implemented because of the lack of symmetry-protected pseudospins. We show that the required protection can be provided by the real-space topological excitation of an interacting quantum fluid: quantum vortex. We consider a Bose-Einstein Condensate at the $Γ$ point of the Brillouin zone of a quantum valley Hall system based on two staggered honeycomb lattices. We demonstrate the existence of a coupling between the winding number of a vortex and the valley of the bulk Bloch band. This leads to chiral vort…
Topological phases open a door to such intriguing phenomena as unidirectional propagation and disorder-resilient localization at a stable frequency. Recently discovered higher-order topological phases further extend the concept of topological protection enabling versatile control over localization in multiple dimensions. Motivated by the recent advances in quantum technologies such as large coherently operating qubit ensembles, we predict and investigate the higher-order topological phase of entangled photon pairs emerging due to the effective photon-photon interaction. Being feasible for stat…
Higher-order topological crystalline phases in low-dimensional interacting quantum systems represent a challenging and largely unexplored research topic. Here, we derive a Hamiltonian describing fermions interacting through correlated hopping processes that break chiral invariance, but preserve both inversion and time-reversal symmetries. In this way, we show that our one-dimensional model gives rise to an interacting second-order topological insulating phase that supports gapped edge states. The topological nature of such interacting phase turns out to be revealed by both long-range order of …
Here, we analyse two Dirac fermion species in two spatial dimensions in the presence of general quartic contact interactions. By employing functional bosonisation techniques, we demonstrate that depending on the couplings of the fermion interactions the system can be effectively described by a rich variety of topologically massive gauge theories. Among these effective theories, we obtain an extended Chern-Simons theory with higher order derivatives as well as two coupled Chern-Simons theories. Our formalism allows for a general description of interacting fermions emerging, for example, at the …
It was recently shown that an interacting Kitaev topological superconductor model is exactly solvable based on two-step Jordan-Wigner transformations together with one spin rotation. We generalize this model by including the dimerization, which is shown also to be exactly solvable. We analytically determine the topological phase diagram containing seven distinct phases. It is argued that the system is topological when a fermionic many-body Majorana zero-energy edge state emerges. It is intriguing that there are two tetra-critical points, at each of which four distinct phases touch.
We study the effect of electron interactions in topological crystalline insulators (TCIs) protected by mirror symmetry, which are realized in the SnTe material class and host multi-valley Dirac fermion surface states. We find that interactions reduce the integer classification of noninteracting TCIs in three dimensions, indexed by the mirror Chern number, to a finite group $Z_8$. In particular, we explicitly construct a microscopic interaction Hamiltonian to gap 8 flavors of Dirac fermions on the TCI surface, while preserving the mirror symmetry. Our construction builds on interacting edge sta…
We elucidate the mechanism for instability of topological Thouless pumping in strongly interacting systems from a viewpoint of symmetry-protected topological phases. If the protecting symmetries of the underlying topological phases change between noninteracting fermions and a bosonic system in the strong coupling limit, the symmetry protection argument enforces a gap closing and thereby predicts a breakdown of the topological pumping. We also demonstrate that, even in the weakly interacting regime where the bulk topological pumping is still robust, the interaction effects manifest themselves i…
The Bloch wave functions have been playing a crucial role in the diagnosis of topological phases in non-interacting systems. However, the Bloch waves are no longer applicable in the presence of finite Coulomb interaction and alternative approaches are needed to identify the topological indices. In this paper, we focus on three-dimensional higher-order topological insulators protected by $C_4T$ symmetry and show that the topological index can be computed through eigenstates of inverse Green's function at zero frequency. If there is an additional $S_4$ rotoinversion symmetry, the topological ind…
We construct a scattering matrix formulation for the topological classification of one-dimensional superconductors with effective time reversal symmetry in the presence of interactions. For a closed geometry, Fidkowski and Kitaev have shown that such systems have a $\mathbb{Z}_8$ topological classification. We show that in the weak coupling limit, these systems retain a unitary scattering matrix at zero temperature, with a topological index given by the trace of the Andreev reflection matrix, $\mbox{tr}\, r_{\rm he}$. With interactions, $\mbox{tr}\, r_{\rm he}$ generically takes on the finite …
We study a one-dimensional interacting topological model by means of exact diagonalization method. The topological properties are firstly examined with the existence of the edge states at half-filling. We find that the topological phases are not only robust to small repulsive interactions but also are stabilized by small attractive interactions, and also finite repulsive interaction can drive a topological non-trivial phase into a trivial one while the attractive interaction can drive a trivial phase into a non-trivial one. Next we calculate the Berry phase and parity of the bulk system and fi…
A time-reversal invariant topological insulator can be generally defined by the effective topological field theory with a quantized θcoefficient, which can only take values of 0 or π. This theory is generally valid for an arbitrarily interacting system and the quantization of the θinvariant can be directly measured experimentally. Reduced to the case of a non-interacting system, the θinvariant can be expressed as an integral over the entire three dimensional Brillouin zone. Alternatively, non-interacting insulators can be classified by topological invariants defined over discrete time-reversal…
The construction and classification of symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases in interacting bosonic and fermionic systems have been intensively studied in the past few years. Very recently, a complete classification and construction of space group SPT phases were also proposed for interacting bosonic systems. In this paper, we attempt to generalize this classification and construction scheme systematically into interacting fermion systems. In particular, we construct and classify point group SPT phases for 2D interacting fermion systems via lower-dimensional block-state decorations. We d…
We investigate the self-organization of strongly interacting particles confined in 1D and 2D. We consider hardcore bosons in spinless Hubbard lattice models with short-range interactions. We show that many-body states with topological features emerge at different energy bands separated by large gaps. The topology manifests in the way the particles organize in real space to form states with different energy. Each of these states contains topological defects/condensations whose Euler characteristic can be used as a topological number to categorize states belonging to the same energy band. We pro…
We study topological insulators characterized by the integer topological invariant Z, in even and odd spacial dimensions. These are well understood in case when there are no interactions. We extend the earlier work on this subject to construct their topological invariants in terms of their Green's functions. In this form, they can be used even if there are interactions. Specializing to one and two spacial dimensions, we further show that if two topologically distinct topological insulators border each other, the difference of their topological invariants is equal to the difference between the …
We develop a Gaussian variational approach in replica space to investigate the phase diagram of a one-dimensional interacting disordered topological superconducting wire in the strong coupling regime. This method allows for a non-perturbative treatment in the disorder strength, electron- electron interactions and the superconducting pairing amplitude. We find only two stable phases: a topological superconducting phase, and a glassy, non-topological localized phase, characterized by replica symmetry breaking.
Topological phases of matter are defined by their nontrivial patterns of ground-state quantum entanglement, which is irremovable so long as the excitation gap and the protecting symmetries, if any, are maintained. Recent studies on noninteracting electrons in crystals have unveiled a peculiar variety of topological phases, which harbors nontrivial entanglement that can be dissolved simply by the the addition of entanglement-free, but charged, degrees of freedom. Such topological phases have a weaker sense of robustness than their conventional counterparts, and are therefore dubbed "fragile top…
Understanding correlation effects in topological phases of matter is at the forefront of current research in condensed matter physics. Here we try to clarify some subtleties in studying topological behaviors of interacting Weyl semimetals. It is well-known that there exist two topological invariants defined to identify their topological character. One is the many-body Chern number, which can be directly linked to the Hall conductivity and thus to the two-particle correlations. The other is the topological index constructed from the single-particle Green's functions. Because the information of …
We investigate the robustness of Majorana edge modes under disorder and interactions. We exploit a recently found mapping of the interacting Kitaev chain in the symmetric region ($μ= 0$, $t = Δ$) to free fermions. Extending the exact solution to the disordered case allows us to calculate analytically the topological phase boundary for all interaction and disorder strengths, which has been thought to be only accessible numerically. We discover a regime in which moderate disorder in the interaction matrix elements enhances topological order well into the strongly interacting regime $U > t$. We a…
We study theoretically the effects of long-range and on-site Coulomb interactions on the topological phases and transport properties of spin-orbit-coupled quasi-one-dimensional quantum wires imposed on an s-wave superconductor. The electrostatic potential and charge density distributions are computed self-consistently within the Hartree approximation. Due to the finite width of the wires and the charge repulsion, the potential and density distribute inhomogeneously in the transverse direction and tend to accumulate along the lateral edges where the hard-wall confinement is assumed. This result…
Quantum mechanical systems, whose degrees of freedom are so-called su(2)_k anyons, form a bridge between ordinary SU(2) spin systems and systems of interacting non-Abelian anyons. Such a connection can be made for arbitrary spin-S systems, and we explicitly discuss spin-1/2 and spin-1 systems. Anyonic spin-1/2 chains exhibit a topological protection mechanism that stabilizes their gapless ground states and which vanishes only in the limit (k to infinity) of the ordinary spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain. For anyonic spin-1 chains we find their phase diagrams to closely mirror the one of the biquadrati…
Symmetry Protected Topological (SPT) phases are a minimal generalization of the concept of topological insulators to interacting systems. In this paper we describe the classification and properties of such phases for three dimensional(3D) electronic systems with a number of different symmetries. For symmetries representative of all classes in the famous 10-fold way of free fermion topological insulators/superconductors, we determine the stability to interactions. By combining with results on bosonic SPT phases we obtain a classification of electronic 3D SPT phases for these symmetries. In case…
We study one-component fermions in chain lattices with proximity-induced superconducting gap and interparticle short-range interaction, capable of hosting Majorana fermions. By systematically tracking various physical quantities, we show that topological states and topological phase transitions in the system can be identified by multiple signatures in thermodynamic quantities and pair-condensate properties, in good agreement with the known signatures in the ground-state energy and entanglement spectrum. We find the disappearance of the topological phase in a largely attractive regime, in which…
We show that semiconductor nanowires coupled to an s-wave superconductor provide a playground to study effects of interactions between different topological superconducting phases supporting Majorana zero-energy modes. We consider quasi-one dimensional system where the topological phases emerge from different transverse subbands in the nanowire. In a certain parameter space, we show that there is a multicritical point in the phase diagram where the low-energy theory is equivalent to the one describing two coupled Majorana chains. We study effect of interactions as well as symmetry-breaking per…
We revisit the effects of the Hubbard repulsion on quantum spin Hall effects (QSHE) in two-dimensional quantum lattice models. We present both unbiased exact diagonalization and density-matrix renormalization group simulations with numerical evidences for a continuous quantum phase transition (CQPT) separating QSHE from the topologically trivial antiferromagnetic phase. Our numerical results suggest that, the nature of CQPT exhibits distinct finite-size scaling behaviors, which may be consistent with either Ising or XY universality classes for different time-reversal symmetric QSHE systems.
Weyl semimetals (WSMs) constitute a 3D phase with linearly-dispersing Weyl excitations at low energy, which lead to unusual electrodynamic responses and open Fermi arcs on boundaries. We derive a simple criterion to identify and characterize WSMs in an interacting setting using the exact electronic Green's function at zero frequency, which defines a topological Bloch Hamiltonian. We apply this criterion by numerically analyzing, via cluster and other methods, interacting lattice models with and without time-reversal symmetry. We identify various mechanisms for how interactions move and renorma…
