We propose a topological order parameter for interacting topological insulators, expressed in terms of the full Green's functions of the interacting system. We show that it is exactly quantized for a time reversal invariant topological insulator, and it can be experimentally measured through the topological magneto-electric effect. This topological order parameter can be applied to both interacting and disordered systems, and used for determining their phase diagrams.
A second-order topological insulator in $d$ dimensions is an insulator which has no $d-1$ dimensional topological boundary states but has $d-2$ dimensional topological boundary states. It is an extended notion of the conventional topological insulator. Higher-order topological insulators have been investigated in square and cubic lattices. In this paper, we generalize them to breathing Kagome and pyrochlore lattices. First, we construct a second-order topological insulator on the breathing Kagome lattice. Three topological boundary states emerge at the corner of the triangle, realizing a 1/3 f…
We study a generic model of a Chern insulator supplemented by a Hubbard interaction in arbitrary even dimension $D$ and demonstrate that the model remains well-defined and nontrivial in the $D \to \infty$ limit. Dynamical mean-field theory is applicable and predicts a phase diagram with a continuum of topologically different phases separating a correlated Mott insulator from the trivial band insulator. We discuss various features, such as the elusive distinction between insulating and semi-metal states, which are unconventional already in the non-interacting case. Topological phases are charac…
A fundamental open problem in condensed matter physics is how the dichotomy between conventional and topological band insulators is modified in the presence of strong electron interactions. We show that there are 6 new electronic topological insulators that have no non-interacting counterpart. Combined with the previously known band-insulators, these produce a total of 8 topologically distinct phases. Two of the new topological insulators have a simple physical description as Mott insulators in which the electron spins form spin analogs of the familiar topological band-insulator. The remaining…
In recent years, the role of crystal symmetries in enriching the variety of TIs have been actively investigated. Higher-order TIs are a new type of topological crystalline insulators that exhibit gapless boundary states whose dimensionality is lower than those on the surface of conventional TIs. In this paper, relying on a concrete tight-binding model, we show that higher-order TIs can be smoothly connected to conventional TIs in a lower dimension without the bulk-gap closing or symmetry breaking. Our result supports the understanding of higher- order TIs as a stacking of lower-dimensional TIs…
In this manuscript, we study the interplay between symmetry and topology with a focus on the $Z_2$ topological index of 2D/3D topological insulators and high-order topological insulators. We show that in the presence of either a two-fold-rotational symmetry or a mirror symmetry, a gauge-invariant quantity can be defined for arbitrary 1D lines in the Brillouin zone. Such 1D quantities provide a new pathway to compute the $Z_2$ index of topological insulators. In contrast to the generic setup, where the $Z_2$ index generally involves 2D planes in the Brillouin zone with a globally-defined smooth…
Topological band insulators have recently been discovered in spin-orbit coupled two and three dimensional systems. In this work, we theoretically predict a class of topological Mott insulators where interaction effects play a dominant role. In actinide elements, simple rocksalt compounds formed by Pu and Am lie on the boundary of metal to insulator transition. We show that interaction drives a quantum phase transition to a topological Mott insulator phase with a single Dirac cone on the surface.
We propose general topological order parameters for interacting insulators in terms of the Green's function at zero frequency. They provide an unified description of various interacting topological insulators including the quantum anomalous Hall insulators and the time reversal invariant insulators in four, three and two dimensions. Since only Green's function at zero frequency is used, these topological order parameters can be evaluated efficiently by most numerical and analytical algorithms for strongly interacting systems.
Kondo insulators are particularly simple type of heavy electron material, where a filled band of heavy quasiparticles gives rise to a narrow band insulator. Starting with the Anderson lattice Hamiltonian, we develop a topological classification of emergent band structures for Kondo insulators and show that these materials may host three-dimensional topological insulating phases. We propose a general and practical prescription of calculating the Z_2 strong and weak topological insulator indices for various lattice structures. Experimental implications of the topological Kondo insulating behavio…
An exhaustive classification scheme of topological insulators and superconductors is presented. The key property of topological insulators (superconductors) is the appearance of gapless degrees of freedom at the interface/boundary between a topologically trivial and a topologically non-trivial state. Our approach consists in reducing the problem of classifying topological insulators (superconductors) in d spatial dimensions to the problem of Anderson localization at a (d-1) dimensional boundary of the system. We find that in each spatial dimension there are precisely five distinct classes of t…
Topological Kondo insulators are a new class of topological insulators in which metallic surface states protected by topological invariants reside in the bulk band gap at low temperatures. Unlike other three-dimensional topological insulators, a truly insulating bulk state, which is critical for potential applications in next-generation electronic devices, is guaranteed by many-body effects in the topological Kondo insulator. Furthermore, the system has strong electron correlations that can serve as a testbed for interacting topological theories. This topical review focuses on recent advances …
Topological insulators (TIs) are expected to be a promising platform for novel quantum phenomena, whose experimental realizations require sophisticated devices. In this Technical Review, we discuss four topics of particular interest for TI devices: topological superconductivity, quantum anomalous Hall insulator as a platform for exotic phenomena, spintronic functionalities, and topological mesoscopic physics. We also discuss the present status and technical challenges in TI device fabrications to address new physics.
We study roles of electron correlations on topological insulators on the honeycomb lattice with the spin-orbit interaction. Accurate variational Monte Carlo calculations show that the increasing on-site Coulomb interactions cause a strong suppression of the charge Drude weight in the helical-edge metallic states leading to a presumable Mott transition from a conventional topological insulator to an edge Mott insulator before a transition to a bulk antiferromagnetic insulator. The intermediate bulk-topological and edge-Mott-insulator phase has a helical spin-liquid character with the protected …
SmB6 was recently proposed to be both a strong topological insulator and a topological crystalline insulator. For this and related cubic topological Kondo insulators, we prove the existence of four different topological phases, distinguished by the sign of mirror Chern numbers. We characterize these phases in terms of simple observables, and we provide concrete tight-binding models for each phase. Based on theoretical and experimental results for SmB6 we conclude that it realizes the phase with C^+_{k_z=0}=+2, C^+_{k_z=pi}=+1, C^+_{k_x=k_y}=-1, and we propose a corresponding minimal model.
Current theories of Kondo insulators employ the interaction of conduction electrons with localized Kramers doublets originating from a tetragonal crystalline environment, yet all Kondo insulators are cubic. Here we develop a theory of cubic topological Kondo insulators involving the interaction of spin quartets with a conduction sea. The spin quartets greatly increase the potential for strong topological insulators, entirely eliminating the weak-topological phases from the diagram. We show that the relevant topological behavior in cubic Kondo insulators can only reside at the lower symmetry X …
A time-reversal invariant topological insulator can be generally defined by the effective topological field theory with a quantized θcoefficient, which can only take values of 0 or π. This theory is generally valid for an arbitrarily interacting system and the quantization of the θinvariant can be directly measured experimentally. Reduced to the case of a non-interacting system, the θinvariant can be expressed as an integral over the entire three dimensional Brillouin zone. Alternatively, non-interacting insulators can be classified by topological invariants defined over discrete time-reversal…
In this paper based on the Haldane model, we study the topological insulator with superlattice of pi-fluxes. We find that there exist the mid-gap states induced by the flux-superlattice. In particular, the mid-gap states have nontrivial topological properties, including the nonzero Chern number and the gapless edge states. We derive an effective tight-binding model to describe the topological midgap states and then study the mid-gap states by the effective tight-binding model. The results can be straightforwardly generalized to other two dimensional topological insulators with flux-superlattic…
Conventional topological insulators and superconductors have topologically protected nodal points on their boundaries, and the recent interests in nodal-line semimetals only concerned bulk band structures. Here, we present a novel four-dimensional topological insulator protected by an anti-unitary reflection symmetry, whose boundary band has a single $PT$-symmetric nodal line with double topological charges. Inspired by the recent experimental realization of the four-dimensional quantum Hall effect, we also propose a cold-atom system which realizes the novel topological insulator with tunable …
After briefly recalling the quantum entanglement-based view of topological phases of matter in order to outline the general context, we give an overview of different approaches to the classification problem of topological insulators and superconductors of non-interacting Fermions. In particular, we review in some detail general symmetry aspects of the "ten-fold way" which forms the foundation of the classification, and put different approaches to the classification in relationship with each other. We end by briefly mentioning some of the results obtained on the effect of interactions, mainly i…
Gapless surface states on topological insulators are protected from elastic scattering on non-magnetic impurities which makes them promising candidates for low-power electronic applications. However, for wide-spread applications, these states should remain coherent and significantly spin polarized at ambient temperatures. Here, we studied the coherence and spin-structure of the topological states on the surface of a model topological insulator, Bi2Se3, at elevated temperatures in spin and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We found an extremely weak broadening and essentially no decay …
We analyze generalizations of two dimensional topological insulators which can be realized in interacting, time reversal invariant electron systems. These states, which we call fractional topological insulators, contain excitations with fractional charge and statistics in addition to protected edge modes. In the case of s^z conserving toy models, we show that a system is a fractional topological insulator if and only if σ_{sH}/e^* is odd, where σ_{sH} is the spin-Hall conductance in units of e/2π, and e^* is the elementary charge in units of e.
We discuss the possibility of realizing Weyl semimetal phase in the magnetically doped topological band insulators. When the magnetic moments are ferromagnetically polarized, we show that there are three phases in the system upon the competition between topological mass and magnetic mass: topological band insulator phase, Weyl semimetal phase, and trivial phase. We explicitly derive the low energy theory of Weyl points from the general continuum Hamiltonian of topological insulators near the Dirac point, e.g. ${\bf k} \cdot {\bf p}$ theory near $Γ$ point for Bi_{2}Se_{3}. Furthermore, we intro…
We examine how the properties of the Kondo insulators change when the symmetry of the underlying crystal field multiplets is taken into account. We employ the Anderson lattice model and consider its low-energy physics. We show that in a large class of crystal field configurations, Kondo insulators can develop a topological non-trivial ground-state. Such topological Kondo insulators are adiabatically connected to non-interacting insulators with unphysically large spin-orbit coupling, and as such may be regarded as interaction-driven topological insulators. We analyze the entanglement entropy of…
Axion electrodynamics, first proposed in the context of particle physics, manifests itself in condensed matter physics in the topological field theory description of 3d topological insulators and gives rise to magnetoelectric effect, where applying magnetic (electric) field $\mathbf{B}(\mathbf{E})$ induces polarization (magnetization) $\mathbf{p}(\mathbf{m})$. We use linear response theory to study the associated topological current using the Fu-Kane-Mele model of 3d topological insulators in the presence of time-dependent uniform weak magnetic field. By computing the dynamical current suscept…
Topological insulators are new states of quantum matter in which surface states residing in the bulk insulating gap are protected by time-reversal symmetry. When a proper kind of antiferromagnetic long range order is established in a topological insulator, the system supports axionic excitations. In this paper, we study theoretically the electronic states in a transition metal oxide of corundum structure, in which both spin-orbit interaction and electron-electron interaction play crucial roles. A tight-binding model analysis predicts that materials with this structure can be strong topological…
We calculate supercurrent across a two-dimensional topological insulator subjected to an external magnetic field. When the edge states of a narrow two-dimensional topological insulator are hybridized, an external magnetic field can close the hybridization gap, thus driving a quantum phase transition from insulator to semimetal states of the topological insulator. We find a sign reversal of the supercurrent at the quantum phase transition revealing intrinsic properties of topological insulators via Josephson effect.
Motivated by recent progress in crystalline symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases of interacting bosons, we study topological crystalline insulators/superconductors (TCIs) of strongly interacting fermions. We construct a class of intrinsically interacting fermionic TCIs, and show that they are beyond both free-fermion TCIs and bosonic crystalline SPT phases. We also show how these phases can be characterized by symmetry protected gapless fermion modes on the corners/hinges of an open system.
Topological insulators are new states of quantum matter with metallic edge/surface states. In this paper, we pointed out that there exists a new type of particle-hole symmetry-protected topological insulator - topological hierarchy insulator (THI), a composite topological state of a (parent) topological insulator and its defect-induced topological mid-gap states. A particular type of THI is topological fractal insulator, that is a THI with self-similar topological structure. In the end, we discuss the possible experimental realizations of THIs.
The surface of a 3D topological insulator is a new type of two dimensional electron gas (2DEG). The exactly quantized magneto-optical or axionic response of a 3D topological insulator is a direct result of the Berry's phase protected spin-momentum locked states on its surface. For interacting Z_2 topological insulators with inversion symmetry, we propose a simple topological invariant expressed in terms of the parity eigenvalues of the interacting Green's function at time-reversal invariant momenta. We derive this result from our previous formula involving the integral over the frequency-momenta space. This formula greatly simplifies the explicit calculation of Z_2 topological invariants in inversion symmetric insulators with strong interactions.
We construct a three-dimensional (3D), time-reversal symmetric generalization of the Chalker-Coddington network model for the integer quantum Hall transition. The novel feature of our network model is that in addition to a weak topological insulator phase already accommodated by the network model framework in the pre-existing literature, it hosts strong topological insulator phases as well. We unambiguously demonstrate that strong topological insulator phases emerge as intermediate phases between a trivial insulator phase and a weak topological phase. Additionally, we found a non-local transfo…
A brief review of metal-insulator transitions in three-dimensional doped semiconductors, with emphasis on the "critical exponent puzzle"; and new experimental findings that signal the possibility of an unexpected metal-insulator transition in dilute two-dimensional systems, such as silicon MOSFETs and GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructures.
The discovery of the quantum spin Hall effect and topological insulators more than a decade ago has revolutionized modern condensed matter physics. Today, the field of topological states of matter is one of the most active and fruitful research areas for both experimentalists and theorists. The physics of topological insulators is typically well described by band theory and systems of non-interacting fermions. In contrast, several of the most fascinating effects in condensed matter physics merely exist due to electron-electron interactions, examples include unconventional superconductivity, th…
Topological insulators are a new class of materials which have gapped spectra in the bulk, but are accompanied by topologically protected gapless excitations at the surface (edge) of the system. These phenomena have a close relationship with symmetry and dimensionality of the system through quantum anomalies. We point out that such a surface state is a physical realization of the domain-wall/overlap fermion. From this point of view, we discuss its implications for experiments of topological insulators. We also discuss an unconventional overlap fermion, which is suggested by the "periodic table…
We investigate the effect of interactions in the Topological Insulator in 3+1 dimensions. We show that for a particular type of interactions, the Electrodynamics response is equivalent to the response of non-interacting Topological Insulator in 4+1 dimensions.
In this paper, we study the magnetic orders of two dimensional correlated topological insulators including the correlated Chern insulator and the correlated Z2 topological insulator at finite temperature. For the 2D correlated Chern insulator, we found that thermal-fluctuation-induced magnetic order appears in the intermediate interaction region of the correlated Chern insulator. On the contrary, for the correlated Z2 topological insulator there doesn't exist the thermal-fluctuation-induced magnetic order. In the end, we give an explanation on the difference.
The theory of topological insulators and superconductors has mostly focused on non-interacting and gapped systems. This review article discusses topological phases that are either gapless or interacting. We discuss recent progress in identifying gapless systems with stable topological properties (such as novel surface states), using Weyl semimetals as an illustration. We then review recent progress in describing topological phases of interacting gapped systems. We explain how new types of edge states can be stabilized by interactions and symmetry, even though the bulk has only conventional exc…
We predict pseudo topological insulators that have been previously overlooked. We determine some conditions under which robust pseudo topological edge states appear and illustrate our idea on the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model with extra chiral symmetry breaking potentials. We discuss that pseudo topological insulating phase transition occurs without band gap closing.
We review recent experimental results on the metal-insulator transition and low-density phases in strongly-interacting, low-disordered Si-based two-dimensional electron systems. Special attention is given to the metallic state in ultra-clean SiGe quantum wells and to the evidence for a flat band at the Fermi level and a quantum electron solid.
We show how quantum oscillation measurements of surface states in an insulator may allow to diagnose a strong topological insulator and distinguish it from its weak or topologically trivial counterpart. The criterion is defined by the parity of the number of fundamental frequencies in the surface-state quantum oscillation spectrum: an even number of frequencies implies a weak or a topologically trivial insulator, whereas an odd number points to a strong topological insulator. We also discuss various aspects and issues related to applying this criterion in practice.
We present a theory on the quantum phase diagram of AB-stacked MoTe$_2$/WSe$_2$ using a self-consistent Hartree-Fock calculation performed in the plane-wave basis, motivated by the observation of topological states in this system. At filling factor $ν=2$ (two holes per moiré unit cell), Coulomb interaction can stabilize a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological insulator by opening a charge gap. At $ν=1$, the interaction induces three classes of competing states, spin density wave states, an in-plane ferromagnetic state, and a valley polarized state, which undergo first-order phase transitions tuned by an …
Recent developments of experimental techniques have given us unprecedented opportunities of studying topological insulators in high dimensions, while some of the dimensions are "synthetic", in the sense that the effective lattice momenta along these synthetic dimensions are controllable periodic tuning parameters. In this work, we study interaction effects on topological insulators with synthetic dimensions. We show that although the free fermion band structure of high dimensional topological insulators can be precisely simulated with the "synthetic techniques", the generic interactions in the…
We study, by means of the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) technique, the evolution of the ground state in a one-dimensional topological insulator, from the non-interacting to the strongly-interacting limit, where the system can be mapped onto a topological Kondo-insulator model. We focus on a toy model Hamiltonian (i.e., the interacting "$sp$-ladder" model), which could be experimentally realized in optical lattices with higher orbitals loaded with ultra-cold fermionic atoms. Our goal is to shed light on the emergence of the strongly-interacting ground state and its topological cla…
The existence of degenerate or gapless edge states is a characteristic feature of topological insulators, but is difficult to detect in the presence of interactons. We propose a new method to obtain the degeneracy of the edge states from the perspective of entanglement entropy, which is very useful to identify interacting topological states. Employing the determinant quantum Monte Carlo technique, we investigate the interaction effect on two representative models of fermionic topological insulators in one and two dimensions, respectively. In the two topologically nontrivial phases, the edge de…
The electronic structure at the interface between a topological band insulator and a Mott insulator is studied within layer dynamical mean field theory. To represent the bulk phases of these systems, we use the generalized Bernevig-Hughes-Zhang model that incorporates the Hubbard-like onsite Coulomb energy U in addition to the spin-orbit coupling term that causes band inversion. The topological and Mott insulating phases are realized by appropriately choosing smaller and larger values of U, respectively. As expected, the interface is found to be metallic because of the localized edge state. Wh…
The dc-conductivity of electrons on a square lattice interacting with a local repulsion in the presence of disorder is computed by means of quantum Monte Carlo simulations. We provide evidence for the existence of a transition from an Anderson insulator to a correlated disordered metal with a universal value of the critical dc-conductivity σ_{dc,crit} = (1.18 \pm 0.06) e^{2}/h at the transition.
A definition of topological phases of density matrices is presented. The topological invariants in case of both noninteracting and interacting systems are extended to nonzero temperatures. Influence of electron interactions on topological insulators at finite temperatures is investigated. A correlated topological insulator is described by the Kane-Mele model, which is extended by the interaction term of the Falicov-Kimball type. Within the Hartree-Fock and the Hubbard I approximations the thermodynamic and topological phase diagrams are determined, where the long-range order is included. The r…
Topological insulators have become one of the most active research areas in condensed matter physics. This article reviews progress on the topic of electronic correlations effects in the two-dimensional case, with a focus on systems with intrinsic spin-orbit coupling and numerical results. Topics addressed include an introduction to the noninteracting case, an overview of theoretical models, correlated topological band insulators, interaction-driven phase transitions, topological Mott insulators and fractional topological states, correlation effects on helical edge states, and topological inva…
Fractional topological insulators are electronic systems that carry fractionally charged excitations, conserve charge and are symmetric to reversal of time. In this review we introduce the basic essential concepts of the field, and then survey theoretical understanding of fractional topological insulators in two and three dimensions. In between, we discuss the case of "two and a half dimensions", the fractional topological insulators that may form on the two dimensional surface of an unfractionalized three dimensional topological insulator. We focus on electronic systems and emphasize properti…
We investigate properties of a topological Mott insulator in one dimension by examining the bulk topological invariant and the entanglement spectrum of a correlated electron model. We clarify how gapless edge states in a non-interacting topological band insulator evolve into spinon edge states in a topological Mott insulator. Furthermore, we propose a topological Mott transition, which is a new type of topological phase transition and never observed in free fermion systems. This unconventional transition occurs in spin liquid phases in the Mott insulator and is accompanied by zeros of the sing…
Topological states of matter were first introduced for non-interacting fermions on an infinite uniform lattice. Since then, substantial effort has been made to generalize these concepts to more complex settings. Recently, local markers have been developed that can describe the topological state of systems without translational symmetry and well-defined gap. However, no local marker for interacting matter has been proposed yet that is capable of directly addressing an interacting system. Here we suggest such a many-body local marker based on the single-particle Green's function. Using this mark…
In this paper we link the physics of topological nonlinear σ models with that of Chern-Simons insulators. We show that corresponding to every 2n-dimensional Chern-Simons insulator there is a (n-1)-dimensional topological nonlinear σ model with the Wess-Zumino-Witten term. Breaking internal symmetry in these nonlinear σ models leads to nonlinear σ models with the θ term. [This is analogous to the dimension reduction leading from 2n-dimensional Chern-Simons insulators to (2n-1) and (2n-2)-dimensional topological insulators protected by discrete symmetries.] The correspondence described in this p…
This research highlight (originally published at http://www.ntu.edu.sg/ias/newsletters/Documents/APPN/APPNv5n2May2016-lowres.pdf) introduces recent developments in Topological Insulators and Holography, and provides an overview of how one can construct a holographic bulk topological insulator from a boundary Chern insulator with small gap.
For D-dimensional weakly interacting topological insulators in certain symmetry classes, the topological invariant can be calculated from a D- or (D+1)-dimensional integration over a certain curvature function that is expressed in terms of single-particle Green's functions. Based on the divergence of curvature function at the topological phase transition, we demonstrate how a renormalization group approach circumvents these integrations and reduces the necessary calculation to that for the Green's function alone, rendering a numerically efficient tool to identify topological phase transitions …
We study a class of $3d$ and $4d$ topological insulators whose topological nature is characterized by the Hopf map and its generalizations. We identify the symmetry $\mathcal{C}^\prime$, a generalized particle-hole symmetry that gives the Hopf insulator a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ classification. The $4d$ analogue of the Hopf insulator with symmetry $\mathcal{C}^\prime$ has the same $\mathbb{Z}_2$ classification. The minimal models for the $3d$ and $4d$ Hopf insulator can be heuristically viewed as "Chern-insulator$ \rtimes S^1$" and "Chern-insulator$\rtimes T^2$" respectively. We also discuss the relati…
We theoretically investigate a two-dimensional heterostructure composed of a topological insulator (TI) and a Mott insulator (MI), and clarify what kind of electronic states can be realized at the interface. By using inhomogeneous dynamical mean-field theory, we confirm that the topological edge state penetrating into the MI region induces a heavy-fermion like mid-gap state. We further elucidate the nature of the spatially-modulated quasi-particle weight of the mid-gap state, and discuss the effects of local correlation in the TI region. The optical conductivity and the Drude weight are also c…
We provide the first unbiased evidence for a higher-order topological Mott insulator in three dimensions by numerically exact quantum Monte Carlo simulations. This insulating phase is adiabatically connected to a third-order topological insulator in the noninteracting limit, which features gapless modes around the corners of the pyrochlore lattice and is characterized by a $\mathbb{Z}_{4}$ spin-Berry phase. The difference between the correlated and non-correlated topological phases is that in the former phase the gapless corner modes emerge only in spin excitations being Mott-like. We also sho…
We consider two-dimensional Chern insulators and time-reversal invariant topological insulators and discuss the effect of perturbations breaking either particle-number conservation or time-reversal symmetry. The appearance of trivial mass terms is expected to cause quantum phase transitions into trivial phases when such a perturbation overweights the topological term. These phase transitions are usually associated with a bulk-gap closing. In contrast, the chiral Chern insulator is unaffected by particle-number breaking perturbations. Moreover, the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological insulator undergoes…
Parafermions are generalizations of Majorana fermions that may appear in interacting topological systems. They are known to be powerful building blocks of topological quantum computers. Existing proposals for realizations of parafermions typically rely on strong electronic correlations which are hard to achieve in the laboratory. We identify a novel physical system in which parafermions generically develop. It is based on a quantum point contact formed by the helical edge states of a quantum spin Hall insulator in vicinity to an ordinary $s$-wave superconductor. Interestingly, our analysis sug…
We define topological invariants in terms of the ground states wave functions on a torus. This approach leads to precisely defined formulas for the Hall conductance in four dimensions and the topological magneto-electric $θ$ term in three dimensions, and their generalizations in higher dimensions. They are valid in the presence of arbitrary many-body interaction and disorder. These topological invariants systematically generalize the two-dimensional Niu-Thouless-Wu formula, and will be useful in numerical calculations of disordered topological insulators and strongly correlated topological ins…
