Recently Kloeckner described the structure of the isometry group of the quadratic Wasserstein space $\mathcal{W}_2\left(\mathbb{R}^n\right)$. It turned out that the case of the real line is exceptional in the sense that there exists an exotic isometry flow. Following this line of investigation, we compute $\mathrm{Isom}\left(\mathcal{W}_p(\mathbb{R})\right)$, the isometry group of the Wasserstein space $\mathcal{W}_p(\mathbb{R})$ for all $p \in [1, \infty)\setminus\{2\}$. We show that $\mathcal{W}_2(\mathbb{R})$ is also exceptional regarding the parameter $p$: $\mathcal{W}_p(\mathbb{R})$ is isometrically rigid if and only if $p\neq 2$. Regarding the underlying space, we prove that the exceptionality of $p=2$ disappears if we replace $\mathbb{R}$ by the compact interval $[0,1]$. Surprisingly, in that case, $\mathcal{W}_p\left([0,1]\right)$ is isometrically rigid if and only if $p\neq1$. Moreover, $\mathcal{W}_1\left([0,1]\right)$ admits isometries that split mass, and $\mathrm{Isom}\left(\mathcal{W}_1\left([0,1]\right)\right)$ cannot be embedded into $\mathrm{Isom}\left(\mathcal{W}_1(\mathbb{R})\right).$
The aim of this short paper is to offer a complete characterization of all (not necessarily surjective) isometric embeddings of the Wasserstein space $\mathcal{W}_p(\mathcal{X})$, where $\mathcal{X}$ is a countable discrete metric space and $0<p<\infty$ is any parameter value. Roughly speaking, we will prove that any isometric embedding can be described by a special kind of $\mathcal{X}\times(0,1]$-indexed family of nonnegative finite measures. Our result implies that a typical non-surjective isometric embedding of $\mathcal{W}_p(\mathcal{X})$ splits mass and does not preserve the shape of mea…
The aim of this paper is to prove that the $p$-Wasserstein space $\mathcal{W}_p(X)$ is isometrically rigid for all $p\geq 1$ whenever $X$ is a countable graph metric space. As a consequence, we obtain that for every countable group $H$ and any $p\geq 1$ there exists a $p$-Wasserstein space whose isometry group is isomorphic to $H$.
Let $(X,d,\mathfrak{m})$ be a metric measure space. The study of the Wasserstein space $(\mathbb{P}_p(X),\mathbb{W}_p)$ associated to $X$ has proved useful in describing several geometrical properties of $X.$ In this paper we focus on the study of isometries of $\mathbb{P}_p(X)$ for $p \in (1,\infty)$ under the assumption that there is some characterization of optimal maps between measures, the so called Good transport behaviour $GTB_p$. Our first result states that the set of Dirac deltas is invariant under isometries of the Wasserstein space. Additionally we obtain that the isometry groups o…
Given a metric space X, one defines its Wasserstein space W2(X) as a set of sufficiently decaying probability measures on X endowed with a metric defined from optimal transportation. In this article, we continue the geometric study of W2(X) when X is a simply connected, nonpositively curved metric spaces by considering its isometry group. When X is Euclidean, the second named author proved that this isometry group is larger than the isometry group of X. In contrast, we prove here a rigidity result: when X is negatively curved, any isometry of W2(X) comes from an isometry of X.
In this article, using ideas of Liero, Mielke and Savaré in [21], we establish a Kantorovich duality for generalized Wasserstein distances $W_1^{a,b}$ on a generalized Polish metric space, introduced by Picolli and Rossi. As a consequence, we give another proof that $W_1^{a,b}$ coincide with flat metrics which is a main result of [25], and therefore we get a result of independent interest that $\left(\mathcal{M}(X), W^{a,b}_1\right)$ is a geodesic space for every Polish metric space $X$. We also prove that $(\mathcal{M}^G(X),W_p^{a,b})$ is isometric isomorphism to $(\mathcal{M}(X/G),W_p^{a,b})…
The purpose of this paper is to understand the geometric structure of the $L^2$-Wasserstein space $\pp$ over the Euclidean space. For this sake, we focus on its cone structure. One of our main results is that the $L^2$-Wasserstein space over a Polish space has a cone structure if and only if so does the underlying space. In particular, $\pp$ turns out to have a cone structure. It is also shown that $\pp$ splits $\R^d$ isometrically but not $\R^{d+1}$.
Main results: (a) If a metric space contains $2n$ elements, the transportation cost space on it contains a $1$-complemented isometric copy of $\ell_1^n$. (b) An example of a finite metric space whose transportation cost space contains an isometric copy of $\ell_\infty^4$. Transportation cost spaces are also known as Arens-Eells, Lipschitz-free, or Wasserstein $1$ spaces.
This work aims to establish new results pertaining to the structure of transportation cost spaces. Due to the fact that those spaces were studied and applied in various contexts, they have also become known under different names such as Arens-Eells spaces, Lipschitz-free spaces, and Wasserstein spaces. The main outcome of this paper states that if a metric space $X$ is such that the transportation cost space on $X$ contains an isometric copy of $\ell_1$, then it contains a $1$-complemented isometric copy of $\ell_1$.
We study the Wasserstein space (with quadratic cost) of Euclidean spaces as an intrinsic metric space. In particular we compute their isometry groups. Surprisingly, in the case of the line, there exists a (unique) "exotic" isometric flow. This contrasts with the case of higher-dimensional Euclidean spaces, where all isometries of the Wasserstein space preserve the shape of measures. We also study the curvature and various ranks of these spaces.
The paper is devoted to isometric Banach-space-theoretical structure of transportation cost (TC) spaces on finite metric spaces. The TC spaces are also known as Arens-Eells, Lipschitz-free, or Wasserstein spaces. A new notion of a roadmap pertinent to a transportation problem on a finite metric space has been introduced and used to simplify proofs for the results on representation of TC spaces as quotients of $\ell_1$ spaces on the edge set over the cycle space. A Tolstoi-type theorem for roadmaps is proved, and directed subgraphs of the canonical graphs, which are supports of maximal optimal …
We investigate the stability of the Wasserstein distance, a metric structure on the space of probability measures arising from the theory of optimal transport, under metric ultralimits. We first show that if $(X_{i},d_{i})_{i\in\mathbb{N}}$ is a sequence of metric spaces with metric ultralimit $(\hat{X},\hat{d})$, then the p-Wasserstein space $(\mathcal{P}_{p}(\hat{X}),W_{p})$ embeds isometrically in a canonical fashion into the metric ultralimit of the sequence of p-Wasserstein spaces $(\mathcal{P}_{p}(X_{i}),W_{p})$. Second, using a notion of ultralimit of metric measure spaces modeled on th…
Let $M_p(X,T)$ denote the Markov type $p$ constant at time $T$ of a metric space $X$, where $p \ge 1$. We show that $M_p(Y,T) \le M_p(X,T)$ in each of the following cases: (a)$X$ and $Y$ are geodesic spaces and $Y$ is covered by $X$ via a finite-sheeted locally isometric covering, (b)$Y$ is the quotient of $X$ by a finite group of isometries, (c) $Y$ is the $L^p$-Wasserstein space over $X$. As an application of (a) we show that all compact flat manifolds have Markov type $2$ with constant $1$. In particular the circle with its intrinsic metric has Markov type $2$ with constant $1$. This answer…
The paper is devoted to the geometry of transportation cost spaces and their generalizations introduced by Melleray, Petrov, and Vershik (2008). Transportation cost spaces are also known as Arens-Eells, Lipschitz-free, or Wasserstein $1$ spaces. In this work, the existence of metric spaces with the following properties is proved: (1) uniformly discrete infinite metric spaces transportation cost spaces on which do not contain isometric copies of $\ell_1$, this result answers a question raised by Cuth and Johanis (2017); (2) locally finite metric spaces which admit isometric embeddings only into…
An action of a compact quantum group on a compact metric space $(X,d)$ is (D)-isometric if the distance function is preserved by a diagonal action on $X\times X$. We show that an isometric action in this sense has the following additional property: The corresponding action on the algebra of continuous functions on $X$ by the convolution semigroup of probability measures on the quantum group contracts Lipschitz constants. It is, in other words, isometric in another sense due to H. Li, J. Quaegebeur and M. Sabbe; this partially answers a question of D. Goswami. We also introduce other possible n…
We study the geometry of the space of measures of a compact ultrametric space X, endowed with the L^p Wasserstein distance from optimal transportation. We show that the power p of this distance makes this Wasserstein space affinely isometric to a convex subset of l^1. As a consequence, it is connected by 1/p-Hölder arcs, but any a-Hölder arc with a>1/p must be constant. This result is obtained via a reformulation of the distance between two measures which is very specific to the case when X is ultrametric; howeverthanks to the Mendel-Naor Ultrametric Skeleton it has consequences even when X is…
Optimal transport enables one to construct a metric on the set of (sufficiently small at infinity) probability measures on any (not too wild) metric space X, called its Wasserstein space W(X). In this paper we investigate the geometry of W(X) when X is a Hadamard space, by which we mean that $X$ has globally non-positive sectional curvature and is locally compact. Although it is known that -except in the case of the line- W(X) is not non-positively curved, our results show that W(X) have large-scale properties reminiscent of that of X. In particular we define a geodesic boundary for W(X) that …
We say that a finite metric space $X$ can be embedded almost isometrically into a class of metric spaces $C$, if for every $ε> 0$ there exists an embedding of $X$ into one of the elements of $C$ with the bi-Lipschitz distortion less then $1 + ε$. We show that almost isometric embeddability conditions are equal for following classes of spaces (a) Quotients of Euclidean spaces by isometric actions of finite groups, (b) $L_2$-Wasserstein spaces over Euclidean spaces, (c) Compact flat manifolds, (d) Compact flat orbifolds, (e) Quotients of connected compact bi-invariant Lie groups by isometric act…
In this essay, we discuss the notion of optimal transport on geodesic measure spaces and the associated (2-)Wasserstein distance. We then examine displacement convexity of the entropy functional on the space of probability measures. In particular, we give a detailed proof that the Lott-Villani-Sturm notion of generalized Ricci bounds agree with the classical notion on smooth manifolds. We also give the proof that generalized Ricci bounds are preserved under Gromov-Hausdorff convergence. In particular, we examine in detail the space of probability measures over the interval, $P(X)$ equipped wit…
We study isometric embeddings of a Euclidean space or a Heisenberg group into a higher dimensional Heisenberg group, where both the source and target space are equipped with an arbitrary left-invariant homogeneous distance that is not necessarily sub-Riemannian. We show that if all infinite geodesics in the target are straight lines, then such an embedding must be a homogeneous homomorphism. We discuss a necessary and certain sufficient conditions for the target space to have this `geodesic linearity property', and we provide various examples.
In the setting of step 2 sub-Finsler Carnot groups with strictly convex norms, we prove that all infinite geodesics are lines. It follows that for any other homogeneous distance, all geodesics are lines exactly when the induced norm on the horizontal space is strictly convex. As a further consequence, we show that all isometric embeddings between such homogeneous groups are affine. The core of the proof is an asymptotic study of the extremals given by the Pontryagin Maximum Principle.

In this paper we consider piecewise linear (pl) isometric embeddings of Euclidean polyhedra into Euclidean space. A Euclidean polyhedron is just a metric space $\mathcal{P}$ which admits a triangulation $\mathcal{T}$ such that each $n$-dimensional simplex of $\mathcal{T}$ is affinely isometric to a simplex in $\mathbb{E}^n$. We prove that any 1-Lipschitz map from an $n$-dimensional Euclidean polyhedron $\mathcal{P}$ into $\mathbb{E}^{3n}$ is $ε$-close to a pl isometric embedding for any $ε> 0$. If we remove the condition that the map be pl then any 1-Lipschitz map into $\mathbb{E}^{2n + 1}$ ca…

This work studies an explicit embedding of the set of probability measures into a Hilbert space, defined using optimal transport maps from a reference probability density. This embedding linearizes to some extent the 2-Wasserstein space, and enables the direct use of generic supervised and unsupervised learning algorithms on measure data. Our main result is that the embedding is (bi-)Hölder continuous, when the reference density is uniform over a convex set, and can be equivalently phrased as a dimension-independent Hölder-stability results for optimal transport maps.
We study rays and co-rays in the Wasserstein space $P_p(\mathcal{X})$ ($p > 1$) whose ambient space $\mathcal{X}$ is a complete, separable, non-compact, locally compact length space. We show that rays in the Wasserstein space can be represented as probability measures concentrated on the set of rays in the ambient space. We show the existence of co-rays for any prescribed initial probability measure. We introduce Busemann functions on the Wasserstein space and show that co-rays are negative gradient lines in some sense.
