Efficient spin/charge interconversion is desired to develop innovative spin-based devices. So far, the interconversion has been performed by using heavy atomic elements, strong spin-orbit interaction of which realizes the interconversion through the spin Hall effect and the Edelstein effect. We demonstrate highly efficient charge-to-spin conversion in a ferromagnetic metal/Cu/Al2O3 trilayers, which do not contain any heavy element. The resulting spin torque efficiency is higher than those of conventional spin Hall and Rashba systems consisting of heavy elements such as Pt and Bi. Our experimental results qualitatively deviate from typical behaviors arising from spin transport. However, they are surprisingly consistent with the behaviors arising from the orbital transport. Our results thus demonstrate a new direction for efficient charge-to-spin conversion through the orbital transport.
Spin orbit torques are of great interest for switching the magnetization direction in nanostructures, moving skyrmions and exciting spin waves. The standard method of determining their efficiency is by spin torque ferromagnetic resonance (ST-FMR), a technique that involves analyzing the resonance linewidth or lineshape. On microstuctures these two analysis methods are quite consistent. Here we present ST-FMR results on permalloy (Ni$_{80}$Fe$_{20}$) nanowires -- with widths varying from $150$ to 800 nm -- that show that the standard model used to analyze the resonance linewidth and lineshape g…
We report the observation of ferromagnetic resonance-driven spin pumping signals at room temperature in three-dimensional topological insulator thin films -- Bi2Se3 and (Bi,Sb)2Te3 -- deposited by molecular beam epitaxy on yttrium iron garnet thin films. By systematically varying the Bi2Se3 film thickness, we show that the spin-charge conversion efficiency, characterized by the inverse Rashba-Edelstein effect length (lambda_IREE), increases dramatically as the film thickness is increased from 2 quintuple layers, saturating above 6 quintuple layers. This suggests a dominant role of surface stat…
The conversion of spin information into electrical signals is indispensable for spintronic technologies. Spin-to-charge conversion in ferromagnetic tunnel contacts is well-described using linear (spin-)transport equations, provided that there is no applied bias, as in nonlocal spin detection. It is shown here that in a biased ferromagnetic tunnel contact, spin detection is strongly nonlinear. As a result, the spin-detection efficiency is not equal to the tunnel spin polarization. In silicon-based 4-terminal spin-transport devices, even a small bias (tens of mV) across the Fe/MgO detector conta…
Transverse magnetoresistance in a ferromagnetic/nonmagnetic/ferromagnetic trilayer originated from charge-spin conversion by anomalous Hall effect is investigated theoretically. Solving the spin diffusion equation in bulk and using the spin-dependent Landauer formula at the ferromagnetic/nonmagnetic interface, an analytical formula of the transverse resistivity is obtained. The charge-spin conversion by the anomalous Hall effect contributes to the magnetoresistance in a manner proportional to the square of the spin anomalous Hall angle. The angular dependence of the magnetoresistance is basica…
We perform ultrafast pump-probe measurements on a nanometer-thick crystalline Bi-doped yttrium iron garnet film with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. Tuning the photon energy of the pump laser pulses above and below the material's bandgap, we trigger ultrafast optical and spin dynamics via both one- and two-photon absorption. Contrary to the common scenario, the optically-induced heating of the system induces an increase up to 20% of the ferromagnetic resonance frequency. We explain this unexpected result in terms of a photo-induced modification of the magnetic anisotropy, i.e. of the effect…
This article shows that the spin-to-charge current conversion in single-layer graphene (SLG) by means of the inverse Rashba-Edelstein effect (IREE) is made possible with the integration of this remarkable 2D-material with the unique ferrimagnetic insulator yttrium iron garnet (YIG = $Y_{3}Fe_{5}O_{12}$) as well as with the ferromagnetic metal permalloy (Py = $Ni_{81}Sb_{19}$). By means of X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) techniques, we show that the carbon atoms of the SLG acquires an induced magnetic moment due to the proximity effect with the magneti…
We show here theoretically and experimentally that a Rashba-split electron state inside a ferromagnet can efficiently convert a dynamical spin accumulation into an electrical voltage. The effect is understood to stem from the Rashba splitting but with a symmetry linked to the magnetization direction. It is experimentally measured by spin pumping in a CoFeB/MgO structure where it is found to be as efficient as the inverse spin Hall effect at play when Pt replaces MgO, with the extra advantage of not affecting the damping in the ferromagnet.
A theoretical formulation of magnetoresistance effect in a metallic ferromagnetic/nonmagnetic bilayer originated from the charge-spin conversion by the anomalous Hall effect is presented. Analytical expressions of the longitudinal and transverse resistivities in both nonmagnet and ferromagnet are obtained by solving the spin diffusion equation. The magnetoresistance generated from charge-spin conversion purely caused by the anomalous Hall effect in the ferromagnet is found to be proportional to the square of the spin polarizations in the ferromagnet and has fixed sign. We also find additional …
The possibility to generate short spin waves is of great interest in the field of magnonics nowadays. We present an effective and technically affordable way of conversion of long spin waves, which may be generated by conventional microwave antenna, to the short, sub-micrometer waves. It is achieved by grating-assisted resonant dynamic dipolar interaction between two ferromagnetic layers separated by some distance. We analyze criteria for the optimal conversion giving a semi-analytical approach for the coupling coefficient. We show by the numerical calculations the efficient energy transfer bet…
We study optical properties of arrays of ultrathin nanowires by means of the Brillouin scattering of light on magnons. We employ the Stokes/anti-Stokes scattering asymmetry to probe the circular polarization of a local electric field induced inside nanowires by linearly polarized light waves. We observe the anomalous polarization conversion of the opposite sign than that in a bulk medium or thick nanowires with a great enhancement of the degree of circular polarization attributed to an unconventional refraction in the nanowire medium.
The angular momentum interconversion between electron spin and other type of angular momenta is useful to develop new spintronic functionalities. The conversions from the angular momentum of photon and mechanical rotation to ferromagnetic spin moment have been well studied. While the recent studies theoretically suggested circular vibration of atoms works as angular momentum of phonon, the direct experimental demonstration of conversion to spin moments remains to be performed. Here we demonstrate that the phonon angular momentum of surface acoustic wave can control the magnetization of a ferro…
Enhancement of spin to charge conversion efficiency at the topological surface state by inserting normal metal spacer layer in the topological insulator based heterostructure
We here demonstrate the interfacial spin to charge current conversion by means of spin pumping from a ferromagnetic Permalloy (Py: Ni80Fe20) to a Cu/Bi2O3 interface. A clear signature of the spin to charge current conversion was observed in voltage spectrum of a Py/Cu/Bi2O3 trilayer film whereas no signature in a Py/Cu and Py/Bi2O3 bilayer films. We also found that the conversion coefficient strongly depended on Cu thickness, reflecting the thickness dependent momentum relaxation time in Cu layer.
Coherent conversion of microwave and optical photons in the single-quantum level can significantly expand our ability to process signals in various fields. Efficient up-conversion of a feeble signal in the microwave domain to the optical domain will lead to quantum-noise-limited microwave amplifiers. Coherent exchange between optical photons and microwave photons will also be a stepping stone to realize long-distance quantum communication. Here we demonstrate bidirectional and coherent conversion between microwave and light using collective spin excitations in a ferromagnet. The converter cons…
Employing electron spin instead of charge to develop spintronic devices holds the merits of low-power consumption in information technologies. Meanwhile, the demand for increasing speed in spintronics beyond current CMOS technology has further triggered intensive researches for ultrafast control of spins even up to unprecedent terahertz regime. The femtosecond laser has been emerging as a potential technique to generate an ultrafast spin-current burst for magnetization manipulation. However, there is a great challenge to establish all-optical control and monitor of the femtosecond transient sp…
We report an investigation of the spin- to charge-current conversion in sputter-deposited films of topological insulator $Bi_2Se_{3}$ onto single crystalline layers of YIG $(Y_{3}Fe_{5}O_{12})$ and polycrystalline films of Permalloy $(Py = Ni_{81}Fe_{19})$. Pure spin current was injected into the $Bi_{2}Se_{3}$ layer by means of the spin pumping process in which the spin precession is obtained by exciting the ferromagnetic resonance of the ferromagnetic film. The spin-current to charge-current conversion, occurring at the $Bi_{2}Se_{3}/$ferromagnet interface, was attribute to the inverse Rashb…
We study the sodium-iridates model on the honeycomb lattice with both BCS pairing potential and Hubbard interaction term. It is shown that this model can be exactly solved with appropriate choices of amplitude of pairing gaps, where the interacting terms are transformed to external field terms. The band structures of these exact solutions on both torus and cylinder geometry are discussed in great details. It is found that the ground state assumes an anti-ferromagnetic configuration, which breaks the time reversal symmetry spontaneously and renders the superconductor topologically trivial. On t…
Spin currents are used to write information in magnetic random access memory (MRAM) devices by switching the magnetization direction of one of the ferromagnetic electrodes of a magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) nanopillar. Different physical mechanisms of conversion of charge current to spin current can be used in 2-terminal and 3-terminal device geometries. In 2-terminal devices, charge-to-spin conversion occurs by spin filtering in the MTJ's ferromagnetic electrodes and present day MRAM devices operate near the theoretically expected maximum charge-to-spin conversion efficiency. In 3-terminal d…
Two-dimensional topological insulators possess two counter propagating edge channels with op- posite spin direction. Recent experimental progress allowed to create ferromagnetic topological insulators realizing a quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) state. In the QAH state one of the two edge channels disappears due to the strong ferromagnetic exchange field. We investigate heterostuctures of topological insulators and ferromagnetic topological insulators by means of numerical transport calculations. We show that spin current flow in such heterostructures can be controlled with high fidelity. Specific…
We start closing a gap in the comparison of experimental and theoretical data associated with the spin Hall effect. Based on a first-principles characterization of electronic structure and a semiclassical description of electron transport, we compute the skew-scattering contribution to the transverse spin and charge currents generated by spin and anomalous Hall effect in a Co/Cu multilayer system doped with Bi impurities. The fact that the created currents cross the interface between the two materials strongly influences the efficiency of charge to spin current conversion, as demonstrated by o…
Magnon-mediated spin transport across nonmagnetic metal (NM) and ferromagnetic insulator (FI) interface depends critically on electron-magnon coupling. We propose a novel route to enhance electron-magnon coupling dynamically from transport viewpoint. Using non-equilibrium Green's function a theoretical formalism for magnon-mediated spin current is developed. In the language of transport, the effective electron-magnon coupling at NM/FI interface is determined by self-energy of FI lead, which is proportional to density of states (DOS) at NM/FI interface due to nonlinear process of electron-magno…
Efficient detection of the magnetic state at nanoscale dimensions is an important step to utilize spin logic devices for computing. Magnetoresistance effects have been hitherto used in magnetic state detection, but they suffer from energetically unfavorable scaling and do not generate an electromotive force that can be used to drive a circuit element for logic device applications. Here, we experimentally show that a favorable miniaturization law is possible via the use of spin-Hall detection of the in-plane magnetic state of a magnet. This scaling law allows us to obtain a giant signal by spin…
We study spin-orbit torques and charge pumping in magnetic quasi-one dimensional zigzag nanoribbons with hexagonal lattice, in the presence of large intrinsic spin-orbit coupling. Such a system experiences topological phase transition from a trivial band insulator to a quantum spin Hall insulator either by tuning the magnetization direction or the intrinsic spin-orbit coupling. We find that spin-charge conversion efficiency (i.e. spin-orbit torque and charge pumping) is dramatically enhanced at the topological transition, displaying a substantial angular anisotropy.
Layered transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) family are gaining increasing importance due to their unique electronic band structures, promising interplay among light, valley (pseudospin), charge and spin degrees of freedom. They possess large intrinsic spin-orbit interaction which make them most relevant for the emerging field of spin-orbitronics. Here we report on the conversion of spin current to charge current in MoS2 monolayer. Using spin pumping from a ferromagnetic layer (10 nm of cobalt) we find that the spin to charge conversion is highly efficient. Analysis in the frame of the inve…
We investigate spin-charge conversion phenomena in hybrid structures of topological insulator (TI) thin films and magnetic insulators. We find an anisotropic inverse spin-galvanic effect (ISGE) that yields a highly tunable spin-orbit torque (SOT). Concentrating on the quasiballistic limit, we also predict a giant anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) at low dopings. These effects, which have no counterparts in thick TIs, depend on the simultaneous presence of the hybridization between the surface states and the in-plane magnetization. Both the ISGE and AMR exhibit a strong dependence on the magn…
We investigate the absorption of a spin current at a ferromagnetic-metal/Pt-oxide interface by measuring current-induced ferromagnetic resonance. The spin absorption was characterized by the magnetic damping of the heterostructure. We show that the magnetic damping of a Ni$_{81}$Fe$_{19}$ film is clearly enhanced by attaching Pt-oxide on the Ni$_{81}$Fe$_{19}$ film. The damping enhancement is disappeared by inserting an ultrathin Cu layer between the Ni$_{81}$Fe$_{19}$ and Pt-oxide layers. These results demonstrate an essential role of the direct contact between the Ni$_{81}$Fe$_{19}$ and Pt-o…

The demagnetization and associated magnetocaloric effect in strong-weak-strong ferromagnetic trilayers, upon a reorientation of the strong ferromagnets from parallel to antiparallel magnetization, is simulated using atomistic spin dynamics. The simulations yield non-trivial spin distributions in the antiparallel state, which in turn allows entropy to be calculated directly. Empirical functional forms are obtained for the magnetization distribution in the spacer, differing significantly from some of the commonly used models. Finally, we find that the magnetocaloric effect in the system can be s…
The search for efficient spin conversion in Bi has attracted great attention in spin-orbitronics. In the present work, we employ spin-torque ferromagnetic resonance to investigate spin conversion in Bi/Ni80Fe20(Py) bilayer films with continuously varying Bi thickness. In contrast with previous studies, sizable spin-transfer torque (i.e., a sizable spin-conversion effect) is observed in Bi/Py bilayer film. Considering the absence of spin conversion in Bi/yttrium-iron-garnet bilayers and the enhancement of spin conversion in Bi-doped Cu, the present results indicate the importance of material co…
Spintronic structures are extensively investigated for their spin orbit torque properties, required for magnetic commutation functionalities. Current progress in these materials is dependent on the interface engineering for the optimization of spin transmission. Here, we advance the analysis of ultrafast spin-charge conversion phenomena at ferromagnetic-transition metal interfaces due to their inverse spin-Hall effect properties. In particular the intrinsic inverse spin Hall effect of Pt-based systems and extrinsic inverse spin-Hall effect of Au:W and Au:Ta in NiFe/Au:(W,Ta) bilayers are inves…
We present theoretically the thermal Hall effect of magnons in a ferromagnetic lattice with a Kekulé-O coupling (KOC) modulation and a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). Through a strain-based mechanism for inducing the KOC modulation, we identify four topological phases in terms of the KOC parameter and DMI strength. We calculate the thermal magnon Hall conductivity ${κ^{xy}}$ at low temperature in each of these phases. We predict an unconventional conductivity due to a non-zero Berry curvature emerging from band proximity effects in the topologically trivial phase. We find sign changes…
In this paper we present spin-to-charge current conversion properties in the Weyl semimetal TaP by means of the inverse Rashba-Edelstein effect (IREE) with the integration of this quantum material with the ferromagnetic metal Permalloy $(Py=Ni_{81}Fe_{19})$. The spin currents are generated in the Py layer by the spin pumping effect (SPE) from microwave-driven ferromagnetic resonance and are detected by a dc voltage along the TaP crystal, at room temperature. We observe a field-symmetric voltage signal without the contamination of asymmetrical lines due to spin rectification effects observed in…
We investigate the thermoelectric properties of a quantum dot coupled to ferromagnetic and superconducting electrodes. The combination of spin polarized tunneling at the ferromagnetic-quantum dot interface and the application of an external magnetic field that Zeeman splits the dot energy level leads to large values of the thermopower (Seebeck coefficient). Importantly, the thermopower can be tuned with an external gate voltage connected to the dot. We compute the figure of merit that measures the efficiency of thermoelectric conversion and find that it attains high values. We discuss the diff…
We theoretically show that the three-dimensional (3D) topological insulator (TI)/thin-film ferromagnetic metal (FMM) bilayer structure is possible to be a quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) insulator with a wide global band gap. Studying the band structure and the weight distributions of eigenstates, we demonstrate that the attachment of a metallic thin-film on the 3DTI can shift the topologically non-trivial state into the metal layers due to the hybridization of bands around the original Dirac point. By introducing the magnetic exchange interaction in the thin-film layers, we compute the anomalous…
Ferromagnetic (FM)/heavy metal (HM) nanostructures can be used for the magnetic state readout in the proposed magneto-electric spin-orbit logic by locally injecting a spin-polarized current and measure the spin-to-charge conversion via the spin Hall effect. However, this local configuration is prone to spurious signals. In this work, we address spurious Hall effects that can contaminate the spin Hall signal in these FM/HM T-shaped nanostructures. The most pronounced Hall effects in our Co50Fe50/Pt nanostructures are the planar Hall effect and the anomalous Hall effect generated in the FM nanow…
Two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) formed at the interface between SrTiO3 (STO) and LaAlO3 (LAO) insulating layer is supposed to possess strong Rashba spin-orbit coupling. To date, the inverse Edelstein effect (i.e. spin-to-charge conversion) in the 2DEG layer is reported. However, the direct effect of charge-to-spin conversion, an essential ingredient for spintronic devices in a current induced spin-orbit torque scheme, has not been demonstrated yet. Here we show, for the first time, a highly efficient spin generation with the efficiency of ~6.3 in the STO/LAO/CoFeB structure at room tempera…
We do a search for topological insulators which are associated with ferromagnetic ordering and show anomalous quantum Hall effect, among transition metal oxide superlattices taking the parent compounds as LaAlO3 and SrTiO3. Among the various superlattices which are studied here, (LaAlO3)10/(LaOsO3)2 exhibits a ferromagnetic ground state with a topologically non-trivial energy gap when a spin-orbit interaction is turned on. The study of transverse conductivity shows that the system has quantized Hall conductivity inside the topological energy gap without applying any external magnetic field. Th…
SrTiO$_3$-based two-dimensional electron gases (2DEGs) can be formed through the deposition of epitaxial oxides like LaAlO$_3$ or of reactive metals such as Al. Such 2DEGs possess a finite Rashba spin-orbit coupling that has recently been harnessed to interconvert charge and spin currents through the direct and inverse Edelstein and spin Hall effects. Here we compare the formation and properties of 2DEGs generated in SrTiO$_3$ by the growth of Al, Ta and Y ultrathin films by magnetron sputtering. By combining in situ and ex situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) we gain insight into the r…
Spin-charge interconversion is a very active direction in spintronics. Yet, the complex behaviour of some of the most promising systems such as SrTiO$_3$ (STO) interfaces is not fully understood. Here, on the basis of a 6-band $\boldsymbol{k.p}$ method combined with spin-resolved scattering theory, we give a theoretical demonstration of transverse spin-charge interconversion physics in STO Rashba interfaces. Calculations involve injection of spin current from a ferromagnetic contact by resonant tunneling into the native Rashba-split resonant levels of the STO triangular quantum well. We comput…
Excitation of coherent high-frequency magnons (quanta of spin waves) is critical to the development of high-speed magnonic devices. Here we computationally demonstrate the excitation of coherent sub-terahertz (THz) magnons in ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) thin films by a photoinduced picosecond acoustic pulse. Analytical calculations are also performed to reveal the magnon excitation mechanism. Through spin pumping and spin-charge conversion, these magnons can inject sub-THz charge current into an adjacent heavy-metal film which in turn emits electromagnetic (EM) waves. Using …
Spin-orbit torque in heavy metal/ferromagnet heterostructures with broken spatial inversion symmetry provides an efficient mechanism for manipulating magnetization using a charge current. Here, we report the presence of a spin torque in a single ferromagnetic layer in both asymmetric MgO/Fe0.8Mn0.2 and symmetric MgO/Fe0.8Mn0.2/MgO structures, which manifests itself in the form of an effective field transverse to the charge current. The current to effective field conversion efficiency, which is characterized using both the nonlinear magnetoresistance and second-order planar Hall effect methods,…
At interfaces with inversion symmetry breaking, Rashba effect couples the motion of electrons to their spin; as a result, spin-charge interconversion mechanism can occur. These interconversion mechanisms commonly exploit Rashba spin splitting at the Fermi level by spin pumping or spin torque ferromagnetic resonance. Here, we report evidence of significant photoinduced spin to charge conversion via Rashba spin splitting in an unoccupied state above the Fermi level at the Cu(111)/$α$-Bi$_{2}$O$_{3}$ interface. We predict an average Rashba coefficient of $1.72\times 10^{-10}eV.m$ at 1.98 eV above…
The spin-momentum locking at the Dirac surface state of a topological insulator (TI) offers a distinct possibility of a highly efficient charge-to-spin current (C-S) conversion compared with spin Hall effects in conventional paramagnetic metals. For the development of TI-based spin current devices, it is essential to evaluate its conversion efficiency quantitatively as a function of the Fermi level EF position. Here we exemplify a coefficient of qICS to characterize the interface C-S conversion effect by using spin torque ferromagnetic resonance (ST-FMR) for (Bi1-xSbx)2Te3 thin films whose EF …
