We construct chiral theories with the smallest number $n_χ$ of Weyl fermions that form an anomaly-free set under various Abelian gauge groups. For the $U(1)$ group, where $n_χ= 5$, we show that the general solution to the anomaly equations is a set of charges given by cubic polynomials in three integer parameters. For the $U(1) \times U(1)$ gauge group we find $n_χ= 6$, and derive the general solution to the anomaly equations, in terms of 6 parameters. For $U(1) \times U(1) \times U(1)$ we show that $n_χ= 8$, and present some families of solutions. These chiral gauge theories have potential applications to dark matter models, right-handed neutrino interactions, and other extensions of the Standard Model. As an example, we present a simple dark sector with a natural mass hierarchy between three dark matter components.
We present an exact normalisable zero-energy chiral fermion solution for abelian BPS dipoles. For a single dipole, this solution is contained within the high temperature limit of the SU(2) caloron with non-trivial holonomy.
We derive the chiral kinetic equation in 8 dimensional phase space in non-Abelian $SU(N)$ gauge field within the Wigner function formalism. By using the "covariant gradient expansion", we disentangle the Wigner equations in four-vector space up to the first order and find that only the time-like component of the chiral Wigner function is independent while other components can be explicit derivative. After further decomposing the Wigner function or equations in color space, we present the non-Abelian covariant chiral kinetic equation for the color singlet and multiplet phase-space distribution …
We find chiral non-Abelian vortices having windings only in one of the diquark condensations of left-handed and right-handed quarks in the color-flavor locked phase of dense QCD. They are the minimum vortices carrying half color magnetic fluxes of those of non-Abelian semi-superfluid vortices (color magnetic flux tubes) and 1/6 quantized superfluid circulations of Abelian superfluid vortices. These vortices carry ${\mathbb C}P^2$ orientational moduli in the internal space corresponding to their fluxes. The ${\mathbb C}P^2$ moduli of two chiral non-Abelian vortices with chiralities opposite to …
Charged plasmas with chirality imbalance are unstable and tend to reduce the imbalance. This chiral plasma instability is, however, not captured in (anomalous) hydrodynamics for high-temperature non-Abelian plasmas. We derive a Langevin-type classical effective theory with anomalous parity-violating effects for non-Abelian plasmas that describes the chiral plasma instability at the magnetic scale. We show that the time scale of the instability is of order $[g^4 T \ln(1/g)]^{-1}$ at weak coupling.
We study domain walls and vortices in chiral symmetry breaking in a QCD-like theory with N flavors in the chiral limit. If the axial anomaly is absent, there exist stable Abelian axial vortices winding around the spontaneously broken U(1)_A symmetry and non-Abelian axial vortices winding around both the U(1)_A and non-Abelian SU(N) chiral symmetries. In the presence of the axial anomaly term, metastable domain walls are present and Abelian axial vortices must be attached by N domain walls, forming domain wall junctions. We show that a domain wall junction decays into N non-Abelian vortices att…
We discuss statistics of vortices having zero-energy non-Abelian Majorana fermions inside them. Considering the system of multiple non-Abelian vortices, we derive a non-Abelian statistics that differs from the previously derived non-Abelian statistics. The new non-Abelian statistics presented here is given by a tensor product of two different groups, namely the non-Abelian statistics obeyed by the Abelian Majorana fermions and the Coxeter group. The Coxeter group is a symmetric group related to the symmetry of polytopes in a high-dimensional space. As the simplest example, we consider the case…
The axion particle may or may not exist, but the axion field can be used, as shown here, in an explicitly local formulation of a chiral U(1) gauge theory with both classical and quantum gauge invariance. Nonabelian analogues of axion fields, which have recently been introduced, can be used, together with their special symmetries, in a similar construction of nonabelian chiral gauge theories. As in known cases, the gauge symmetry is broken and the gauge boson acquires a mass by swallowing the axions which are therefore not physical in this construction.
We construct non-Abelian global string solutions in the U(N)_L x U(N)_R linear sigma model. These strings are the most fundamental objects which are expected to form during the chiral phase transitions, because the Abelian eta' string is marginally decomposed into N of them. We point out Nambu-Goldstone modes of CP^{N-1} for breaking of U(N)_V arise around a non-Abelian vortex.
Topological superconductors classified as type D admit zero-energy Majorana fermions inside vortex cores, and consequently the exchange statistics of vortices becomes non-Abelian, giving a promising example of non-Abelian anyons. On the other hand, types C and DIII admit zero-energy Dirac fermions inside vortex cores. It has been long believed that an essential condition for the realization of non-Abelian statistics is non-locality of Dirac fermions made of two Majorana fermions trapped inside two well-separated vortices as in the case of type D. Contrary to this conventional wisdom, however, …
We extend our previous analysis on the exchange statistics of vortices having a single Dirac fermion trapped in each core, to the case where vortices trap two Dirac fermions with U(2) symmetry. Such a system of vortices with non-Abelian Dirac fermions appears in color superconductors at extremely high densities, and in supersymmetric QCD. We show that the exchange of two vortices having doublet Dirac fermions in each core is expressed by non-Abelian representations of a braid group, which is explicitly verified in the matrix representation of the exchange operators when the number of vortices …
In this paper the duality correspondence between fermion-antifermion and difermion interaction channels is established in two (2+1)-dimensional Gross-Neveu type models with a fermion number chemical potential $μ$ and a chiral chemical potential $μ_5$. The role and influence of this property on the phase structure of the models are investigated. In particular, it is shown that the chemical potential $μ_5$ promotes the appearance of dynamical chiral symmetry breaking, whereas the chemical potential $μ$ contributes to the emergence of superconductivity.
Using the lattice gauge field theory, we study the relation among the local chiral condensate, monopoles, and color magnetic fields in quantum chromodynamics (QCD). First, we investigate idealized Abelian gauge systems of 1) a static monopole-antimonopole pair and 2) a magnetic flux without monopoles, on a four-dimensional Euclidean lattice. In these systems, we calculate the local chiral condensate on quasi-massless fermions coupled to the Abelian gauge field, and find that the chiral condensate is localized in the vicinity of the magnetic field. Second, using SU(3) lattice QCD Monte Carlo ca…
Higher order effects of the two-dimensional non-Abelian gauge theories, in which the vector-meson mass is generated by chiral anomalies, will be studied. The $β$ function and the topological nature of the non-linear $σ$ model in the action and unitarity of the theory will be discussed.
We show that a massive fermion theory, while not invariant under the conventional chiral transformation, is invariant under a $m$-deformed chiral transformation. These transformations and the associated conserved charges are nonlocal but reduce to the usual transformations and charges when $m=0$. The $m$-deformed charges commute with helicity and satisfy the conventional chiral algebra.
As recently pointed out, regularization schemes defined in four-dimensions may also face inconsistencies in the presence of chiral fermions. In this work, we extend this analysis to two-loop order. Adopting the implicit regularization as working arena, we discuss in detail how a consistent version of the method can be envisaged, and present many of the subtleties that appear at two-loop order using an abelian chiral model as working example.
A formulation of abelian and non-abelian chiral gauge theories is presented together with arguments for the unitarity and renormalisability in four dimensions. IASSNS-HEP-94/70, UM-P-94/96, and RCHEP-94/26.
Quark matter at high density may exhibit color superconductivity. As magnetic flux tubes in metallic superconductors, color magnetic flux tubes as non-Abelian vortices appear in the color-flavor locked phase of high density QCD. ${\mathbb C}P^2$ Nambu-Goldstone bosons and Majorana fermions belonging to the triplet representation are known to be localized around a non-Abelian vortex. In this paper, we determine the coupling of these bosonic and fermionic modes by using the nonlinear realization method.
We compute the finite temperature correction to the induced fermion number for fermions coupled to a static SU(2) chiral background, using the derivative expansion technique. At zero temperature the induced fermion number is topological, being the winding number of the chiral background. At finite temperature however, higher order terms in the derivative expansion give nontopological corrections to the winding number. We use this result to show that the standard cancellation of the fractional parts of the fermion number inside and outside the bag in an SU(2) x SU(2) hybrid chiral bag model of …
The subject of these summer school lectures are (i) Chiral symmetry; (ii) Anomalies; (iii) Domain wall fermions; (iv) Overlap fermions and the Ginsparg-Wilson equation
We classify compactifications of the type IIB superstring on AdS_{5} x S^{5}/Γ, where Γis an abelian group of order n<= 12. Appropriate embedding of Γin the isometry of S^5 yields both SUSY and non-SUSY chiral models that can contain the minimal SUSY standard model or the standard model. New non-SUSY three family models with Γ=Z_8 are introduced, which lead to the right Weinberg angle for TeV trinification.
We analyze the vacuum structure of SU(2) QCD with multiple massless adjoint representation fermions formulated on a small spatial $S^1 \times \R^3$. The absence of thermal fluctuations, and the fact that quantum fluctuations favoring the vacuum with unbroken center symmetry in a weakly coupled regime renders the interesting dynamics of these theories analytically calculable. Confinement, the area law behavior for large Wilson loops, and the generation of the mass gap in the gluonic sector are shown analytically. By abelian duality transformation, the long distance effective theory of QCD is ma…
We analyze the dynamics of an $SU_L(2)\otimes U_R(1)$ chiral theory on the lattice with a strong multifermion coupling. It is shown that no spontaneous symmetry breaking occurs; the ``spectator'' fermion $ψ_R$ is a free mode; doublers are decoupled as massive Dirac fermions consistently with the chiral symmetries. In 1+1 dimension, we show that the right-handed three-fermion state disappears at the threshold and an undoubled left-handed chiral fermion remains in the continuum limit.
We present a leptogenesis scenario associated with inflationary models involving non-Abelian gauge fields within the standard model of particle physics (SM). We show that this class of inflationary models generates intrinsic birefringent gravitational waves that through the gravitational chiral anomaly in SM, can naturally create a net lepton number density. The CP violating interaction is produced by tensor fluctuations of the gauge field, while the efficiency of this process is determined by the effective background value of the gauge field. We demonstrate that this mechanism can create the …
We investigate the effect of a uniform background magnetic field on the chiral symmetry breaking in SU(2) Yang-Mills theory on the lattice. We observe that the chiral condensate grows linearly with the field strength B up to \sqrt{e B} = 3 GeV as predicted by chiral perturbation theory for full QCD. As the temperature increases the coefficient in front of the linear term gets smaller. In the magnetic field near-zero eigenmodes of the Dirac operator tend to have more regular structure with larger (compared to zero-field case) Hausdorff dimensionality. We suggest that the delocalization of near-…
We study the production of chiral fermions in a background of a strong non-abelian gauge field with a non-vanishing Chern-Pontryagin density. We discuss both pair production analogous to the Schwinger effect as well as asymmetric production through the chiral anomaly, sourced by the Chern-Pontryagin density. In abelian gauge theories one may nicely understand these processes by considering that the fermion dispersion relation forms discrete Landau levels. Here we extend this analysis to a non-abelian gauge theory, considering an intrinsically non-abelian isotropic and homogeneous SU(2) gauge f…
The mechanism of the chiral symmetry breaking is investigated in the strong-coupling Abelian gauge theories at finite temperature. The Schwinger-Dyson equation in Landau gauge is employed in the real time formalism and is solved numerically within the framework of the instantaneous exchange approximation including the effect of the hard thermal loop for the photon propagator. It is found that the chiral symmetry is broken below the critical temperature T for sufficiently large coupling. The chiral phase transition is found to be of the 2nd order and the phase diagram on the $T-α$ plane is obta…
The chiral phase transition of strong-coupling Abelian gauge theories is investigated in the brane world. It is assumed that gauge boson propagates in an extra dimension, i.e. bulk gauge theories. The phase structure is analytically evaluated by using the low-energy effective theories. We also numerically solve the ladder Schwinger-Dyson equation for the full fermion propagator including Kaluza-Klein (KK) excitation modes of the gauge field. It is found that the chiral phase transition is of the second order, and the critical value of the coupling constant is obtained. The extra dimension has …
The fermionic measure in the functional integral of a gauge theory suffers from an ambiguity in the form of a chiral phase. By fixing it, one is led once again to the conclusion that a chiral phase in the quark mass term of QCD has no effect and cannot cause CP violation.
We derive a semi-classical effective action and the kinetic equation for massive Dirac fermions in electromagnetic fields. The non-Abelian Berry phase structure emerges from two helicity states of massive fermions with positive energy. The classical spin emerges as a vector in SU(2) helicity space. The continuity equations for the fermion number and the classical spin are derived. The fermion number is conserved while the spin charge is not conserved by anomaly. Previous results about the coefficients of the chiral magnetic effect for the fermion and axial currents in the chiral limit can be r…
The Yukawa-Higgs/Ginsparg-Wilson-fermion construction of chiral lattice gauge theories described in hep-lat/0605003 uses exact lattice chirality to decouple the massless chiral fermions from a mirror sector, whose strong dynamics is conjectured to give cutoff-scale mass to the mirror fermions without breaking the chiral gauge symmetry. In this paper, we study the mirror sector dynamics of a two-dimensional chiral gauge theory in the limitof strong Yukawa and vanishing gauge couplings, in which case it reduces to an XY model coupled to Ginsparg-Wilson fermions. For the mirror fermions to acquir…
The chiral magnetization properties of cold and hot vacua are studied using quenched simulations in lattice Yang-Mills theory. In weak external magnetic fields the magnetization is proportional to the first power of the magnetic field. We evaluate numerically the coefficient of the proportionality (the chiral susceptibility) using near-zero eigenmodes of overlap fermions. We found that the product of the chiral susceptibility and the chiral condensate equals to 46(3) MeV. This value is very close to the phenomenological value of 50 MeV. In strong fields the magnetization is a nonlinear functio…
We study the transverse momentum spectra of fermions and bosons produced in strong, time-dependent abelian field. The transverse size of the abelian field is finite, similarly to color strings and ropes. Different time-dependent field strengths are investigated in a kinetic model, and transverse momentum spectra are calculated for fermions and bosons. These spectra display exponential or polynomial behavior at high p_T, depending on the given time dependence. We compare our spectra to lattice result for a classical gluon field and obtain surprisingly good agreement in certain cases.
The LEP data on four fermion processes are presently used to study the non abelian gauge couplings of the Standard Model. The present theoretical error for two classes of processes, single-W production and radiative four fermion final states, is discussed according to the results of the four fermion working group of the LEP2 Monte Carlo Workshop held at CERN.
One -loop fermion determinant is discussed for the case in which dynamical chiral symmetry breaking caused by momentum dependent fermion self energy $Σ(p^2)$ take place. The obtained series generalizes the heat kernel expansion for hard fermion mass.
We report on a new mechanism that leads to the generation of primordial chiral gravitational waves, and hence, the violation of the parity symmetry in the Universe. We show that nonperturbative production of fermions with a definite helicity is accompanied by the generation of chiral gravitational waves. This is a generic and model-independent phenomenon that can occur during inflation, reheating and radiation eras, and can leave imprints in the cosmic microwave background polarization and may be observed in future ground- and space-based interferometers. We also discuss a specific model where…
By exploiting the chiral symmetry, we derive analytic formulas for the massless and the massive Ginsparg-Wilson fermion propagators. Using these formulas, we derive an expression for the chiral condensate which is the order parameter for spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking in QCD. These formulas provide the proper way to compute the fermion propagators and may save a significant amount of computing time especially for large lattices in four dimensions.
We study renormalization group flows in strongly interacting field theories with fermions that correspond to transitions between a theory without Lorentz invariance at high energies down to a theory with approximate Lorentz symmetry in the infrared. Holographic description of the strong coupling is used. The emphasis is made on emergence of chiral fermions in the low-energy theory.
We discuss the non-conservation of fermion number (or chirality breaking, depending on the fermionic charge assignment) in Abelian gauge theories at finite temperature. We study different mechanisms of fermionic charge disappearance in the high temperature plasma, using both analytical estimates and real-time classical lattice numerical simulations. We investigate the random walk of the Chern-Simons number $Q \propto \int d^4x F_{μν}{\tilde F}^{μν}$, and show that it has a diffusive behaviour in the presence of an external magnetic field $B$. This indicates that the mechanism for fermionic num…
We studied the Berry curvature of the massive Dirac fermion in 3+1 dimensions. For the non-interacting Dirac fermion, the Berry curvature is non-Abelian because of the degeneracy of positive and negative helicity modes. We calculated the non-Abelian Berry curvature analytically and numerically. For the interacting Dirac fermion in QCD, the degeneracy is lost because gluons carry helicity and color charge. We calculated the Abelian Berry curvature in lattice QCD.
The chiral Abelian Higgs model is studied at finite temperature. By integrating out the heavy modes, we make a three-dimensional effective theory for the static modes. It is demonstrated that the plasma masses are correctly reproduced to leading order in $m^{2}/T^{2}$. The effective potential for the composite operator $ϕ^{\dagger}ϕ$ is calculated at one loop for the resulting three-dimensional theory and it is shown that the result is gauge parameter invariant. The numerical investigation of the potential reveals that the symmetry is restored via a first order phase transition. Comparison wit…
We add fermions to an abelian-gauged hidden sector. We show that the lightest can be the dark matter with the right thermal relic abundance, and discovery is within reach of upcoming dark matter detectors. We also show that these fermions change Higgs boson phenomenology at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), and in particular could induce a large invisible width to the lightest Higgs boson state. Such an invisibly decaying Higgs boson can be discovered with good significance in the vector boson fusion channel at the LHC.
We report on an exploratory lattice study on the phenomenon of chiral instabilities in non-Abelian gauge theories at high temperature. It is based on a recently constructed anomalous Langevin-type effective theory of classical soft gauge fields in the presence of a chiral number density $n_5=n_{\rm R}-n_{\rm L}$. Evaluated in thermal equilibrium using classical lattice techniques it reveals that the fluctuating soft fields indeed exhibit a rapid energy increase at early times and we observe a clear dependence of the diffusion rate of topological charge (sphaleron rate) on the the initial $n_5$…
Based on the truncated Dyson-Schwinger equations for fermion and massive boson propagators in QED$_3$, the fermion chiral condensate and the mass singularities of the fermion propagator via the Schwinger function are investigated. It is shown that the critical point of chiral phase transition is apparently different from that of deconfinement phase transition and in Nambu phase the fermion is confined only for small gauge boson mass.
The fermion four-point functions and condensates as the chiral symmetry order parameters are calculated analytically in U(1) gauge theory in the massless phase. It is shown that in leading order of the loop expansion of the effective action, there is a critical coupling for the nonperturbative parity-invariant chirality-changing four-fermion functions; this critical coupling however is the same as that for dynamical mass generation. Therefore there is no breaking of chiral symmetry through the condensation of four-fermion functions below the critical coupling for dynamical mass generation for …
In this work we study the critical behavior and momentum dependence of chirality-flipping fermion 4-point functions in non-abelian gauge theories. Our formalism is based on the Schwinger-Dyson system of equations. Considering the large-N limit of an SU(N) theory simplifies the problem considerably, showing us clearly which Green functions can be non-zero and which not. It also allows us to draw conclusions on chirality-flipping n-point functions for n larger than four.
The one-loop fermionic contribution to the probability of an instanton transition with fermion number violation is calculated in the chiral Abelian Higgs model in 1+1 dimensions, where the fermions have a Yukawa coupling to the scalar field. The dependence of the determinant on fermionic, scalar and vector mass is determined. We show in detail how to renormalize the fermionic determinant in partial wave analysis, which is convenient for computations.
The rotation of polarization occurs for light interacting with chiral materials. It requires the light states with opposite chiralities interact differently with the materials. We demonstrate analogous rotation of polarization also exists for chiral fermions interacting with quantum electrodynamics plasma with vorticity using chiral kinetic theory. We find that the rotation of polarization is perpendicular both to vorticity and fermion momentum. The effect also exists for chiral fermions in quantum chromodynamics plasma with vorticity. It could lead to generation of a vector current when the p…
A chiral soliton lattice (CSL), proposed as the ground state of rotating baryonic matter at a finite density, is shown to be unstable in a large parameter region for two flavors owing to pion condensations, leading to two types of non-Abelian (NA) CSL phases (dimer and deconfining phases). We determine the phase diagram where the dimer phase meets the other phases and QCD vacuum at three tricritical points. The critical angular velocity for NA-CSLs is lower than the $η$-CSL. Each NA soliton carries an isospin, and an antiferro-isospin chain is formed leading to gapless isospinons. The anomalou…
We develop a method to obtain fermion spectral functions non-perturbatively in a non-Abelian gauge theory with high occupation numbers of gauge fields. After recovering the free field case, we extract the spectral function of fermions in a highly occupied non-Abelian plasma close to its non-thermal fixed point, i.e., in a self-similar regime of the non-equilibrium dynamics. We find good agreement with hard loop perturbation theory for medium-induced masses, dispersion relations and quasiparticle residues. We also extract the full momentum dependence of the damping rate of the collective excita…
I discuss the electrical conductivity, bulk viscosity, and heavy-quark diffusion coefficient in strong magnetic fields putting emphasis on consequences of the chirality conservation on the perturbative relaxation dynamics.
