Mie-resonant high-index dielectric particles are at the core of modern all-dielectric photonics. In many situations, their response to the external fields is well-captured by the dipole model which neglects the excitation of higher-order multipoles. In that case, it is commonly assumed that the dipole moments induced by the external fields are given by the product of particle polarizability tensor and the field in the particle center. Here, we demonstrate that the dipole response of non-spherical subwavelength dielectric particles is significantly more complex since the dipole moments are defined not only by the field in the particle center but also by the second-order spatial derivatives of the field. As we prove, such nonlocal response is especially pronounced in the vicinity of anapole minimum in the scattering cross-section. We examine the excitation of high-index dielectric disk in microwave domain and silicon nanodisk in near infrared applying group-theoretical analysis and retrieving the nonlocal corrections to the dipole moments. Extending the discrete dipole model to include nonlocality of the dipole response, we demonstrate an improved agreement with full-wave numerical simulations. These results provide important insights into meta-optics of Mie-resonant non-spherical particles as well as metamaterials and metadevices based on them.

Resonantly enhanced Raman scattering in dielectric nanostructures has been recently proven to be an effcient tool for developing nanothermometry and experimental determination of their mode- composition. In this paper, we develop a rigorous analytical theory based on the Green's function approach to calculate the Raman emission from crystalline high-index dielectric nanoparticles. As an example, we consider silicon nanoparticles which have a strong Raman response due to active optical phonon modes. We relate enhancement of Raman signal emission to Purcell effect due to the excitation of Mie mo…
Polarizability expressions are commonly used in optics and photonics to model the light scattering by small particles. Models based on Taylor series of the scattering coefficients of the particles fail to predict the morphologic resonances hosted by dielectric particles. Here, we propose to use the factorization of the special functions appearing in the expression of the Mie scattering coefficients to derive point-like models. These models can be applied to reproduce both Mie resonances of dielectric particles and plasmonic resonances of metallic particles. They provide simple but robust tools…
Controlling the electromagnetic helicity and directionality of the light scattered by dielectric particles is paramount to a variety of phenomenology of interest in all-dielectric optics and photonics. In this Letter, we show that the conservation of the electromagnetic helicity in the scattering by high-index dielectric Mie spheres can be used as a probe of pure-multipolar spectral regions, particularly, of dipolar nature, beyond its presumed spectral interval. This finding reveals that the dipolar behavior is not necessarily limited to small particles, in striking contrast to the current sta…
All-dielectric resonant nanophotonics lies at the heart of modern optics and nanotechnology due to the unique possibilities to control scattering of light from high-index dielectric nanoparticles and metasurfaces. One of the important concepts of dielectric Mie-resonant nanophotonics is associated with the Kerker effect that drives the unidirectional scattering of light from nanoantennas and Huygens' metasurfaces. Here we suggest and demonstrate experimentally a novel effect manifested in the nearly complete simultaneous suppression of both forward and backward scattered fields. This effect is…
We develop a multipolar theory of second-harmonic generation (SHG) by dielectric nanoparticles made of noncentrosymmetric materials with bulk quadratic nonlinearity. We specifically analyze two regimes of optical excitation: illumination by a plane wave and single-mode excitation, when the laser pump drives the magnetic dipole mode only. Considering two classes of nonlinear crystalline solids (dielectric perovskite material and III-V semiconductor), we apply a symmetry approach to derive selection rules for the multipolar composition of the nonlinear radiation. The developed description can be…
Manipulating light on the nanoscale has become a central challenge in metadevices, resonant surfaces, nanoscale optical sensors, and many more, and it is largely based on resonant light confinement in dispersive and lossy metals and dielectrics. Here, we experimentally implement a novel strategy for dielectric nanophotonics: Resonant subwavelength confinement of light in air. We demonstrate that voids created in high-index dielectric host materials support localized resonant modes with exceptional optical properties. Due to the confinement in air, the modes do not suffer from the loss and disp…
By combining analytical and numerical approaches, we study resonantly enhanced second-harmonic generation (SHG) by individual high-index dielectric nanoparticles made of centrosymmetric materials. Considering both bulk and surface nonlinearities, we describe second-harmonic nonlinear scattering from a silicon nanoparticle optically excited in the vicinity of the magnetic and electric dipolar resonances. We discuss the contributions of different nonlinear sources, and the effect of the low-order optical Mie modes on the characteristics of the generated far-field. We demonstrate that the multipo…

Developments in fabrication techniques have enabled the further study of their properties and the investigation of related optical effects. After deposition on a substrate, the optical properties of a particle change dramatically due to mutual interaction. Here, we consider a silicon spherical nanoparticle on a dielectric one-layered substrate. At the normal incidence of light, the layer thickness controls the contribution of t…
Dye-sensitized photocatalytic (DSP) approach is considered as one of the promising approaches for developing visible light- and near-infrared light-responsive photocatalysts. DSP systems are still affected by significant drawbacks, such as low light absorption efficiency. We employ halide perovskite CsPbBr$_3$ as both gain and resonator material that provides high optical gain (up t…
Resonances in optical cavities have been used to manipulate light propagation, enhance light-matter interaction, modulate quantum states, and so on. However, in traditional cavities, the permittivity contrast in and out the cavity is not so high. Recently, zero-index materials (ZIMs) with unique properties and specific applications have attracted great interest. By putting optical cavity into ZIMs, the extreme circumstance with infinite permittivity contrast can be obtained. Here, we theoretically study Mie resonances of dielectric cavities embedded in ZIMs with $\varepsilon \approx 0$, or $μ\…
We present finite element method based simulation results for on-chip controlled photon interference in optical networks based upon interconnected arrays of primitives comprising a single photon source (SPS) embedded in lithographically fabricable rectangular dielectric building block (DBB) based metastructures in which a single collective Mie resonance of the whole circuit provides the needed light manipulating functions of nanoantenna, state-preserving-guiding, beam-splitting and beam-combining. Efficient coupling of the SPSs to the co-designed collective Mie mode of DBBs is achieved. The fi…
A type of 3-dimensional optical negative-refractive-index metamaterials composed of all dielectric nanospheres is proposed and demonstrated theoretically. The metamaterials are constructeded by pairing together two kinds of dielectric nanospheres as concentric shells embedded in a host medium. Mie-based extended effective theory shows that the dielectric core and the dielectric shell provide the negative permeability and the negative permittivity, respectively, both due to the strong Mie resonances. Within the coupled resonant frequency region, the negative index of refraction can be achieved.
We study behavior of resonant modes under change of the distance between two parallel dielectric cylinders. The processes of mutual scattering of Mie resonant modes by cylinders result in an interaction between the cylinders which lifts a degeneracy of resonances of the isolated cylinders. There are two basic scenarios of evolution of resonances with the distance. For strong interaction of cylinders resonances are unbound with avoided crossings from the of the Mie resonances with increasing of the distance. That scenario is typical for low exciting resonances (monopole and dipole). For weak in…
We study nonlinear response of a dimer composed of two identical Mie-resonant dielectric nanoparticles illuminated normally by a circularly polarized light. We develop a general theory describing hybridization of multipolar modes of the coupled nanoparticles, and reveal nonvanishing nonlinear circular dichroism (CD) in the second-harmonic generation (SHG) signal enhanced by the multipolar resonances in the dimer provided its axis is oriented under an angle to the crystalline lattice of the dielectric material. We present experimental results for this SHG-CD effect obtained for the AlGaAs dimer…
Nanostructured metal oxides, such as Cu2O, CeO2, α-Fe2O3, and TiO2 can efficiently mediate photocatalysis for solar-to-chemical energy conversion and pollution remediation. In this contribution, we report a novel approach, dielectric Mie resonance-enhanced photocatalysis, to enhance the catalytic activity of metal oxide photocatalysts. Specifically, we demonstrate that Cu2O nanostructures exhibiting dielectric Mie resonances can exhibit up to an order of magnitude higher photocatalytic rate as compared to Cu2O nanostructures not exhibiting dielectric Mie resonances. Monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) have recently been proposed as a unique excitonic platform for advanced optical and electronic functionalities. However, in spite of intense research efforts, it has been largely overlooked that, in addition to displaying rich exciton physics, TMDCs also possess a very high refractive index. This opens a possibility to utilize these materials for constructing resonant nanoantennas based on subwavelength geometrical modes. Here we show that nanodisks fabricated from exfoliated multilayer WS$_2$ support distinct Mie resonances and so-called anap…

Optically induced Mie resonances in dielectric nanoantennas feature low dissipative losses and large resonant enhancement of both electric and magnetic fields. They offer an alternative platform to plasmonic resonances to study light-matter interactions from the weak to the strong coupling regimes. Here, we experimentally demonstrate the strong coupling of bright excitons in monolayer WS$_2$ with Mie surface lattice resonances (Mie-SLRs). We resolve both electric and magnetic Mie-SLRs of a Si nanoparticle array in angular dispersion measurements. At the zero detuning condition, the dispersion …
We theoretically analyse the hybrid Mie-exciton optical modes arising from the strong coupling of excitons in organic dyes or transition-metal dichalcogenides with the Mie resonances of high-index dielectric nanoparticles. Detailed analytic calculations show that silicon--exciton core--shell nanoparticles are characterised by a richness of optical modes which can be tuned through nanoparticle dimensions to produce large anticrossings in the visible or near infrared, comparable to those obtained in plexcitonics. The complex magnetic-excitonic nature of these modes is understood through spectral…
When the feature size of photonic structures becomes comparable or even smaller than the wavelength of light, the fabrication imperfections inevitably introduce disorder that may eliminate many functionalities of subwavelength photonic devices. Here we suggest a novel concept to achieve a robust bandgap which can endure disorder beyond 30 as a result of the transition from photonic crystals to Mie-resonant metamaterials. By utilizing Mie-resonant metamaterials with high refractive index, we demonstrate photonic waveguides and cavities with strong robustness to position disorder, thus providing…
Though the interfacial tractor beam experiment supports the increase of photon momentum (i.e., Minkowski momentum), it is still a matter of investigation whether, inside matter, the photon momentum always increases. Considering the inhomogeneous or heterogeneous background, we have demonstrated that if the background and the half-immersed object are both non-absorbing, the transferred photon momentum to the object can be considered as the one of Minkowski exactly at the interface. In contrast, the presence of loss inside matter, either in the half-immersed object (i.e., plasmonic or lossy diel…

We perform a comprehensive analysis of bright exciton photoluminescence (PL) enhancement from various 2D TMDCs, including WS2, MoS2, WSe2, and MoSe2 via their coupling to Mie resonances o…
Recently, we showed that dielectric mesoscale spheres could support so-called super-resonance effect, i.e. high-order Mie resonance modes with giant field localization and enhancement. Due to the presence of the surrounding medium leads to a significant influence in the intensity of the field in the particle, based on Mie theory we show for the first time that this effect may be use to design refractive index sensor of medium. Using the example of air as an environment, we have shown that the sensitivity of the proposed sensor concept can reach from 10-6 to 10-8, depending on the accuracy of t…
We review a new, rapidly developing field of all-dielectric nanophotonics which allows to control both magnetic and electric response of structured matter by engineering the Mie resonances in high-index dielectric nanoparticles. We present a general approach for the numerical calculation of the effective dielectric tensor of metamaterials and show that our formalism can be used to study metamaterials beyond the long wavelength limit. We consider a system composed of high refractive index cylindric inclusions and show that our method reproduces the Mie resonant features and photonic band structure obtained from a multiple scattering approach, hence opening the possibility to study arbitrarily complex geometries for the design of resonance-based negative refractive metamaterials at optical wavelengths.
The optical nonlocality in symmetric metal-dielectric multilayer metamaterials is theoretically and experimentally investigated with respect to transverse-magnetic-polarized incident light. A nonlocal effective medium theory is derived from the transfer-matrix method to determine the nonlocal effective permittivity depending on both the frequency and wave vector in a symmetric metal-dielectric multilayer stack. In contrast to the local effective medium theory, our proposed nonlocal effective medium theory can accurately predict measured incident angle-dependent reflection spectra from a fabric…
Dielectric optical nanoantennas play an important role in color displays, metasurface holograms, and wavefront shaping applications. They usually exploit Mie resonances as supported on nanostructures with high refractive index, such as Si and TiO2. However, these resonances normally cannot be tuned. Although phase change materials, such as the germanium-antimony-tellurium alloys and post transition metal oxides, such as ITO, have been used to tune optical antennas in the near infrared spectrum, tunable dielectric antennae in the visible spectrum remain to be demonstrated. In this paper, we des…
We present and analyze a dielectric cluster based on subwavelength LiTaO3 polaritonic cylinders for demonstrating toroidal response in THz regime due to mutual coupling of Mie- resonance modes of the cylinders. Based on this cluster, we demonstrate a low-loss metamaterial with the dominant toroidal response, which plays a key role in achieving resonant total transmission.
Recently we proposed the use of a single collective Mie mode of coupled dielectric resonators arranged in metastructures designed to simultaneously enhance the emission rate, control the direction, and propagation of emitted photons from an embedded single photon source (SPS) [J. Opt. Soc. Am. B 33(12), 2414(2016); J. Appl. Phys.120, 243103(2016)]. Here we extend the analysis to include the necessary additional two functions of beam splitting and controlled combing of photons from two distinct on-chip sources for interference. Thus, the same single Mie mode of the designed system provides all …
Nanoscale dielectric resonators and quantum-confined semiconductors have enabled unprecedented control over light absorption and excited charges, respectively. In this work, we embed luminescent silicon nanocrystals (Si-NCs) into a 2D array of SiO2 nanocylinders, and experimentally prove a powerful concept: the resulting metamaterial preserves the radiative properties of the Si-NCs and inherits the spectrally-selective absorption properties of the nanocylinders. This hierarchical approach provides increased photoluminescence (PL) intensity obtained without utilizing any lossy plasmonic compone…
Mie theory is one of the main tools describing scattering of propagating electromagnetic waves by spherical particles. Evanescent optical fields are also scattered by particles and exert radiation forces which can be used for optical near-field manipulations. We show that the Mie theory can be naturally adopted for the scattering of evanescent waves via rotation of its standard solutions by a complex angle. This offers a simple and powerful tool for calculations of the scattered fields and radiation forces. Comparison with other, more cumbersome, approaches shows perfect agreement, thereby val…
High index dielectric spherical particle supports the high-$Q$ resonant Mie modes that results in a regular series of sharp resonances in the radiation pressure. A presence of perfectly conducting metal surface transforms the Mie modes into the extremely high-$Q$ magnetic bonding or electric anti-bonding modes for close approaching of the sphere to the surface. We show that the electromagnetic plane wave with normal incidence results in repulsive or attractive resonant optical forces relative to metal for excitation of the electric bonding or magnetic anti-bonding resonant modes respectively. …
The transmission characteristics of a spherical (possibly multilayered) particle of arbitrary size under focused illumination are discussed within the generalized Lorenz-Mie theory. Expressions generalizing the total extinction and scattering cross-sections to their fractional counterparts are presented which allow for a convenient modeling of transmission signals, both on-axis and off-axis. The strong dependence of the signal on the collection angle and the complex polarizability are readily included in this minimal, yet accurate model. The precise signature of the energy redistribution and a…
