We examine the cosmological implications of measurements of the void-galaxy cross-correlation at redshift $z=0.57$ combined with baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) data at $0.1<z<2.4$. We find direct evidence of the late-time acceleration due to dark energy at $>10σ$ significance from these data alone, independent of the cosmic microwave background and supernovae. Using a nucleosynthesis prior on $Ω_bh^2$, we measure the Hubble constant to be $H_0=72.3\pm1.9\;{\rm km\,s}^{-1}{\rm Mpc}^{-1}$ from BAO+voids at $z<2$, and $H_0=69.0\pm1.2\;{\rm km\,s}^{-1}{\rm Mpc}^{-1}$ when adding Lyman-$α$ BAO at $z=2.34$, both independent of the CMB. Adding voids to CMB, BAO and supernova data greatly improves measurement of the dark energy equation of state, increasing the figure of merit by >40%, but remaining consistent with flat flat $Λ$ cold dark matter.
We compile a list of 28 independent measurements of the Hubble parameter between redshifts 0.07 < z < 2.3 and use this to place constraints on model parameters of constant and time-evolving dark energy cosmologies. These H(z) measurements by themselves require a currently accelerating cosmological expansion at about, or better than, 3-sigma confidence. The mean and standard deviation of the 6 best-fit model deceleration-acceleration transition redshifts (for the 3 cosmological models and 2 Hubble constant priors we consider) is $z_{\rm da} = 0.74 \pm 0.05$, in good agreement with the recent Bu…
We explore the distance-redshift relation using a cosmographic methodology, and show how the cosmographic parameters can be used to determine the redshift of transition from deceleration to acceleration. Such a transition at a low redshift occupies only a small region of the available parameter space, and the prior assumption of an early period of deceleration can significantly change the posterior constraints. We use available type Ia Supernovae (SN-Ia) and Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) data sets to determine the cosmographic deceleration $q_0$, jerk $j_0$, snap $s_0$ and lerk $l_0$ param…
Peculiar-velocity surveys of the low-redshift universe have significant leverage to constrain the growth rate of cosmic structure and test gravity. Wide-field imaging surveys combined with multi-object spectrographs (e.g. ZTF2, LSST, DESI, 4MOST) can use Type Ia supernovae as informative tracers of the velocity field, reaching few percent constraints on the growth rate $fσ_8$ at $z\lesssim0.2$ where density tracers cannot do better than $\sim10\%$. Combining the high-redshift DESI survey mapping redshift space distortions with a low-redshift supernova peculiar velocity survey using LSST and DE…
Weighted mean and median statistics techniques are used to combine 23 independent lower redshift, $z<1.04$, Hubble parameter, $H(z)$, measurements and determine binned forms of $H(z)$. When these are combined with 5 higher redshift, $1.3\leqslant z \leqslant 2.3$, $H(z)$ measurements the resulting constraints on cosmological parameters, of three cosmological models, that follow from the weighted-mean binned data are almost identical to those derived from analyses using the 28 independent $H(z)$ measurements. This is consistent with what is expected if the lower redshift measurements errors are…
The $Λ$CDM model is the current standard model in cosmology thanks to its ability to reproduce the observations. Its first observational evidence appeared from the type Ia supernovae (SNIa) Hubble diagram. However, there has been some debate in the literature concerning the statistical treatment of SNIa. In this paper we relax the standard assumption that SNIa intrinsic luminosity is independent of the redshift, and we examine whether it may have an impact on the accelerated nature of the expansion of the Universe. In order to be as general as possible, we reconstruct the expansion rate of the…
Detecting the change of a cosmological object's redshift due to the time evolution of the Universal expansion rate is an ambitious experiment that will be attempted with future telescope facilities. In this paper, we describe the ACCELERATION programme, which aims to study the properties of the most underdense regions of the Universe. One of the highlight goals of this programme is to prepare for the redshift drift measurement. Using the EAGLE cosmological hydrodynamic simulations, we estimate the peculiar acceleration of gas in galaxies and in the Lya forest. We find that star-forming 'cold n…
The growth rate of large scale structure can probe whether dark matter clusters at gravitational strength or deviates from this, e.g. due to self interactions. Measurement of the growth rate through redshift space distortions in galaxy redshift surveys constrains the clustering strength, and its redshift dependence. We compare such effects on growth to those from high redshift deviations (e.g. early dark energy) or modified gravity, and give a simple, highly accurate analytic prescription. Current observations can constrain the dark matter clustering strength to F_{cl}=0.99\pm0.02 of standard,…
The standard relation between the cosmological redshift and cosmic scale factor underlies cosmological inference from virtually all kinds of cosmological observations, leading to the emergence of the LambdaCDM cosmological model. This relation is not a fundamental theory and thus observational determination of this function (redshift remapping) should be regarded as an insightful alternative to holding its standard form in analyses of cosmological data. Here we present non-parametric reconstructions of redshift remapping in dark-matter-dominated models and constraints on cosmological parameter…
The geometry of the Universe may be probed using the Alcock-Paczynski (AP) effect, in which the observed redshift size of a spherical distribution of sources relative to its angular size varies according to the assumed cosmological model. Past applications of this effect have been limited, however, by a paucity of suitable sources and mitigating astrophysical factors, such as internal redshift-space distortions and poorly known source evolution. In this Letter, we introduce a new test based on the AP effect that avoids the use of spatially bound systems, relying instead on sub-samples of quasa…
Context: The cosmological concordance model ($Λ$CDM) matches the cosmological observations exceedingly well. This model has become the standard cosmological model with the evidence for an accelerated expansion provided by the type Ia supernovae (SNIa) Hubble diagram. However, the robustness of this evidence has been addressed recently with somewhat diverging conclusions. Aims: The purpose of this paper is to assess the robustness of the conclusion that the Universe is indeed accelerating if we rely only on low-redshift (z$\lesssim$2) observations, that is to say with SNIa, baryonic acoustic os…
We study the parity-odd part (that we shall call Doppler term) of the linear galaxy two-point correlation function that arises from wide-angle, velocity, Doppler lensing and cosmic acceleration effects. As it is important at low redshift and at large angular separations, the Doppler term is usually neglected in the current generation of galaxy surveys. For future wide-angle galaxy surveys such as Euclid, SPHEREx and SKA, however, we show that the Doppler term must be included. The effect of these terms is dominated by the magnification due to relativistic aberration effects and the slope of th…
We re-examine claims of redshift evolution in black hole-bulge scaling relations based on lensed quasars. In particular, we refine the black hole mass estimates using measurements of Balmer lines from near-infrared spectroscopy obtained with Triplespec at Apache Point Observatory. In support of previous work, we find a large scatter between Balmer and UV line widths, both MgII 2796, 2803 and CIV 1548, 1550. There is tentative evidence that CIII] 1909, despite being a blend of multiple transitions, may correlate well with MgII, although a larger sample is needed for a real calibration. Most imp…
In this paper we study the cosmic acceleration for five dynamical dark energy models whose equation of state varies with redshift. The cosmological parameters of these models are constrained by performing a MCMC analysis using mainly gas mass fraction, $f_{gas}$, measurements in two samples of galaxy clusters: one reported by Allen et al. (2004), which consists of $42$ points spanning the redshift range $0.05<z<1.1$, and the other by Hasselfield et al. (2013) from the Atacama Cosmology Telescope survey, which consists of $91$ data points in the redshift range $0.118 < \mathrm{z} < 1.36$. In ad…

According to the cosmological principle, galaxy cluster sizes and cluster densities, when averaged over sufficiently large volumes of space, are expected to be constant everywhere, except for a slow variation with look-back time (redshift). Thus, average cluster sizes or correlation lengths provide a means of testing for homogeneity that is almost free of selection biases. Using ~10^6 galaxies from the SDSS DR7 survey, I show that regions of space separated by ~2 Gpc/h have the same average cluster size and density to 5 - 10 percent. I show that the average cluster size, averaged over many gal…
We explore the accuracy of the clustering-based redshift inference within the MICE2 simulation. This method uses the spatial clustering of galaxies between a spectroscopic reference sample and an unknown sample. The goal of this study is to give a preview of the redshift accuracy one can reach with this method. To do so, we first highlight the requirements of this technique in term of number of objects in both the reference and unknown samples. We also confirm that this method does not require a representative spectroscopic sample for calibration. We estimate that a density of spectroscopic ob…
Nearly a century after the discovery that we live in an expanding Universe, and two decades after the discovery of accelerating cosmic expansion, there remains no direct detection of this acceleration via redshift drift - a change in the cosmological expansion velocity versus time. Because cosmological redshift drift directly determines the Hubble parameter H(z), it is arguably the cleanest possible measurement of the expansion history, and has the potential to constrain dark energy models (e.g. Kim et al. 2015). The challenge is that the signal is small - the best observational constraint pre…
The canonical redshift-scale factor relation, 1/a=1+z, is a key element in the standard LambdaCDM model of the big bang cosmology. Despite its fundamental role, this relation has not yet undergone any observational tests since Lemaitre and Hubble established the expansion of the Universe. It is strictly based on the assumption of the Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker metric describing a locally homogeneous and isotropic universe and that photons move on null geodesics of the metric. Thus any violation of this assumption, within general relativity or modified gravity, can yield a different ma…
We propose a new and highly model-independent test of cosmic acceleration by comparing observations of the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) scale at low and intermediate redshifts: we derive a new inequality relating BAO observables at two distinct redshifts, which must be satisfied for any reasonable homogeneous non-accelerating model, but is violated by models similar to LambdaCDM, due to acceleration in the recent past. This test is fully independent of the theory of gravity (GR or otherwise), the Friedmann equations, CMB and supernova observations: the test assumes only the Cosmological P…
Motivated by recent suggestions that a number of observed galaxy clusters have masses which are too high for their given redshift to occur naturally in a standard model cosmology, we use Extreme Value Statistics to construct confidence regions in the mass-redshift plane for the most extreme objects expected in the universe. We show how such a diagram not only provides a way of potentially ruling out the concordance cosmology, but also allows us to differentiate between alternative models of enhanced structure formation. We compare our theoretical prediction with observations, placing currently…
Recent detection of high-redshift, massive clusters through Sunyaev-Zel'dovich observations has opened up a new way to test cosmological models. It is known that detection of a single supermassive cluster at a very high redshift can rule out many cosmological models all together. However, since dealing with different observational biases makes it difficult to test the likeliness of the data assuming a cosmological model, most of the cluster data (except those with high mass-redshift) stays untouched in confronting cosmological models with cluster observations. We propose here that one can use …
We use a range of cosmological data to constrain phenomenological modifications to general relativity on cosmological scales, through modifications to the Poisson and lensing equations. We include cosmic microwave background anisotropy measurements from the Planck satellite, cosmic shear from CFHTLenS and DES-SV, and redshift-space distortions from BOSS data release 12 and the 6dF galaxy survey. We find no evidence of departures from general relativity, with the modified gravity parameters constrained to $Σ_0 = 0.05^{+0.05}_{-0.07}$ and $μ_0 = -0.10^{+0.20}_{-0.16}$, where $Σ_0$ and $μ_0$ refe…
We quantify the evidence for cosmic acceleration using simulations of $H(z)$ measurements from SKA- and Euclid-like surveys. We perform a non-parametric reconstruction of the Hubble parameters and its derivative to obtain the deceleration parameter $q(z)$ using the Gaussian Processes method. This is a completely model-independent approach, so we can determine whether the Universe is undergoing accelerated expansion {\it regardless} of any assumption of a dark energy model. We find that Euclid-like and SKA-like band 1 surveys can probe cosmic acceleration at over $3$ and $5σ$ confidence level, …
HI absorption systems are great targets for direct measurement of the Sandage-Loeb (SL) effect throughout a wide range of redshift for ground-based radio telescopes. We demonstrate the significance of improving the accuracy of SL effect measurement in cosmological model selection. With its wide sky coverage and high sensitivity, we forecast that for 1 year of the upcoming commensal survey (CRAFTS) the FAST telescope is capable of discovering about 800 HI absorption systems thereby improving the SL measurement accuracy. Aiming to measurement the cosmic redshift drift rate at the precision of $\…
We compile a complete collection of reliable Hubble parameter $H(z)$ data to redshift $z \leq 2.36$ and use them with the Gaussian Process method to determine continuous $H(z)$ functions for various data subsets. From these continuous $H(z)$'s, summarizing across the data subsets considered, we find $H_0\sim 67 \pm 4\,\rm km/s/Mpc$, more consistent with the recent lower values determined using a variety of techniques. In most data subsets, we see a cosmological deceleration-acceleration transition at 2$σ$ significance, with the data subsets transition redshifts varying over $0.33<z_{\rm da}<1.…
We determine the accuracy of galaxy redshift distributions as estimated from photometric redshift probability distributions $p(z)$. Our method utilises measurements of the angular cross-correlation between photometric galaxies and an overlapping sample of galaxies with spectroscopic redshifts. We describe the redshift leakage from a galaxy photometric redshift bin $j$ into a spectroscopic redshift bin $i$ using the sum of the $p(z)$ for the galaxies residing in bin $j$. We can then predict the angular cross-correlation between photometric and spectroscopic galaxies due to intrinsic galaxy clus…
In this paper, we study the anisotropy of cosmic acceleration the using Pantheon sample, which includes 1048 spectroscopically confirmed Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) covering the redshift range $0.01 < z < 2.3$. In hemisphere comparison method, we find the dipole direction is $(l = 37 \pm 40^{\circ}, b = 33 \pm 16^{\circ})$ with the maximum anisotropy level of $δ=0.136 {}^{+0.009}_{-0.005}$. From the dipole fitting method, we find that the magnitude of anisotropy is $A = (3.7 {}^{+2.5}_{-3.7}) \times 10^{-4}$, and the direction of the dipole $(l = 329^{\circ}{}^{+ 101^{\circ}}_{-28^{\circ}}, b …
Weak lensing surveys are emerging as an important tool for the construction of "mass selected" clusters of galaxies. We evaluate both the efficiency and completeness of a weak lensing selection by combining a dense, complete redshift survey, the Smithsonian Hectospec Lensing Survey (SHELS), with a weak lensing map from the Deep Lens Survey (DLS). SHELS includes 11,692 redshifts for galaxies with R < 20.6 in the four square degree DLS field; the survey is a solid basis for identifying massive clusters of galaxies with redshift z < 0.55. The range of sensitivity of the redshift survey is similar…
The extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS) is one of the first of a new generation of galaxy redshift surveys that will cover a large range in redshift with sufficient resolution to measure the baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) signal. For surveys covering a large redshift range we can no longer ignore cosmological evolution, meaning that either the redshift shells analysed have to be significantly narrower than the survey, or we have to allow for the averaging over evolving quantities. Both of these have the potential to remove signal: analysing small volumes increases the …
We present precise HI 21 cm absorption line redshifts observed in multiple epochs to directly constrain the secular redshift drift dz/dt_o or the cosmic acceleration, dv/dt_o. A comparison of literature analog spectra to contemporary digital spectra shows significant acceleration likely attributable to systematic instrumental errors. However, we obtain robust constraints using primarily Green Bank Telescope digital data. Ten objects spanning z=0.09-0.69 observed over 13.5 years show dz/dt_o = (-2.3 +/- 0.8) x 10^-8 yr^-1 or dv/dt_o = -5.5 +/- 2.2 m/s/yr. The best constraint from a single objec…
A Bayesian statistical analysis using redshift space distortions data is performed to test a model of Symmetric Teleparallel Gravity where gravity is non-metrical. The cosmological background mimics a $Λ$CDM evolution but differences arise in the perturbations. The linear matter fluctuations are numerically evolved and the study of the growth rate of structures is analysed in this cosmological setting. The best fit parameters reveal that the $σ_8$ tension between Planck and Large Scale Structure data can be alleviated within this framework.
We probe the cosmic acceleration by using the recently released SNLS3 sample of 472 type Ia supernovae. Combining this type Ia supernovae dataset with the cosmic microwave background anisotropy data from the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe 7-yr observations, the baryon acoustic oscillation results from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey data release 7, and the Hubble constant measurement from the Wide Field Camera 3 on the Hubble Space Telescope, we measure the dark energy equation of state $w$ and the deceleration parameter $q$ as functions of redshift by using the Chevallier-Polarski-Linder p…
Redshift-space clustering anisotropies caused by cosmic peculiar velocities provide a powerful probe to test the gravity theory on large scales. However, to extract unbiased physical constraints, the clustering pattern has to be modelled accurately, taking into account the effects of non-linear dynamics at small scales, and properly describing the link between the selected cosmic tracers and the underlying dark matter field. We use a large hydrodynamic simulation to investigate how the systematic error on the linear growth rate, $f$, caused by model uncertainties, depends on sample selections …
We further investigate slowing down of acceleration of the universe scenario for five parametrizations of the equation of state of dark energy using four sets of supernovae data. In a maximal probability analysis we also use the baryon acoustic oscillation and cosmic microwave background observations. We found the low redshift transition of the deceleration parameter appears, independently of the parametrization, using supernovae data alone except for the Union 2.1 sample. This feature disappears once we combine the supernova data with high redshift data. We conclude that the rapid variation o…
We compile an updated list of 38 measurements of the Hubble parameter $H(z)$ between redshifts $0.07 \leq z \leq 2.36$ and use them to place constraints on model parameters of constant and time-varying dark energy cosmological models, both spatially flat and curved. We use five models to measure the redshift of the cosmological deceleration-acceleration transition, $z_{\rm da}$, from these $H(z)$ data. Within the error bars, the measured $z_{\rm da}$ are insensitive to the model used, depending only on the value assumed for the Hubble constant $H_0$. The weighted mean of our measurements is $z…
A new method to constrain the cosmological equation of state is proposed by using combined samples of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and supernovae (SNeIa). The Chevallier-Polarski-Linder parameterization is adopted for the equation of state in order to find out a realistic approach to achieve the deceleration/acceleration transition phase of dark energy models. As results, we find that GRBs, calibrated by SNeIa, could be, at least, good distance indicators capable of discriminating cosmological models with respect to $Λ$CDM at high redshift. Besides, GRBs+SNeIa combined redshift-distance diagram put…
One possibility for explaining the apparent accelerating expansion of the universe is that we live in the center of a spherically inhomogeneous universe. Although current observations cannot fully distinguish $Λ$CDM and these inhomogeneous models, direct measurement of the acceleration of the universe can be a powerful tool in probing them. We have shown that, if $Λ$CDM is the correct model, DECIGO/BBO would be able to detect the positive redshift drift (which is the time evolution of the source redshift $z$) in 3--5 year gravitational wave (GW) observations from neutron-star binaries, which e…
We use information entropy to test the isotropy in the nearby galaxy distribution mapped by the Two Micron All-Sky redshift survey (2MRS). We find that the galaxy distribution is highly anisotropic on small scales. The radial anisotropy gradually decreases with increasing length scales and the observed anisotropy is consistent with that expected for an isotropic Poisson distribution beyond a length scale of $90 \, h^{-1}\, {\rm Mpc}$. Using mock catalogues from N-body simulations, we find that the galaxy distribution in the 2MRS exhibits a degree of anisotropy compatible with that of the $Λ$CD…
The distribution of angles subtended between pairs of galaxies and the line of sight, which is uniform in real space, is distorted by their peculiar motions, and has been proposed as a probe of cosmic expansion. We test this idea using N-body simulations of structure formation in a cold dark matter universe with a cosmological constant and in two variant cosmologies with different dark energy models. We find that the distortion of the distribution of angles is sensitive to the nature of dark energy. However, for the first time, our simulations also reveal dependences of the normalization of the…
The gravitational fields of two isolated ellipticals, NGC 720 and NGC 1521, have been recently measured to very large galactic radii (~100 and ~200 kpc), assuming hydrostatic balance of the hot gas enshrouding them. They afford, for the first time to my knowledge, testing MOND in ellipticals with force and quality that, arguably, approach those of rotation-curve tests in disk galaxies. In the context of MOND, it is noteworthy that the measured accelerations span a wide range, from more than 10a0 to about a0/10, unprecedented in individual ellipticals. I find that MOND predicts correctly the me…
We test general relativity (GR) at the effective redshift $\bar{z} \sim 1.5$ by estimating the statistic $E_G$, a probe of gravity, on cosmological scales $19 - 190\,h^{-1}{\rm Mpc}$. This is the highest-redshift and largest-scale estimation of $E_G$ so far. We use the quasar sample with redshifts $0.8 < z < 2.2$ from Sloan Digital Sky Survey IV extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS) Data Release 16 (DR16) as the large-scale structure (LSS) tracer, for which the angular power spectrum $C_\ell^{qq}$ and the redshift-space distortion (RSD) parameter $β$ are estimated. By cross …
Recent studies have indicated that an anisotropic cosmic expansion may exist. In this paper, we use three datasets of type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) to probe the isotropy of cosmic acceleration. For the Union2.1 dataset, the direction and magnitude of the dipole are $(l=309.3^{\circ} {}^{+ 15.5^{\circ}}_{-15.7^{\circ}} ,\ b = -8.9^{\circ} {}^{ + 11.2^{\circ}}_{-9.8^{\circ}} ),\ A=(1.46 \pm 0.56) \times 10^{-3}$. For the Constitution dataset, the results are $(l=67.0^{\circ}{}^{+ 66.5^{\circ}}_{-66.2^{\circ}},\ b=-0.6^{\circ}{}^{+ 25.2^{\circ}}_{-26.3^{\circ}}),\ A=(4.4 \pm 5.0) \times 10^{-4}$. F…
We present a quantitative study of the X-ray morphology of galaxy clusters, as a function of their detection method and redshift. We analyze two separate samples of galaxy clusters: a sample of 36 clusters at 0.35 < z < 0.9 selected in the X-ray with the ROSAT PSPC 400 deg2 survey, and a sample of 90 clusters at 0.25 < z < 1.2 selected via the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect with the South Pole Telescope. Clusters from both samples have similar-quality Chandra observations, which allow us to quantify their X-ray morphologies via two distinct methods: centroid shifts and photon asymmetry. The la…
The thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect contains information about the thermal history of the universe, observable in maps of the Compton $y$ parameter; however, it does not contain information about the redshift of the sources. Recent papers have utilized a tomographic approach, cross-correlating the Compton $y$ map with the locations of galaxies with known redshift, in order to deproject the signal along the line of sight. In this paper, we test the validity and accuracy of this tomographic approach to probe the thermal history of the universe. We use the state-of-the-art cosmological hydrodyna…
We examine the observational viability of a class of $f(\mathcal{R})$ gravity cosmological models. Particular attention is devoted to constraints from the recent observational determination of the redshift of the cosmological deceleration-acceleration transition. Making use of the fact that the Ricci scalar is a function of redshift $z$ in these models, $\mathcal {R=R}(z)$, and so is $f(z)$, we use cosmography to relate a $f(z)$ test function evaluated at higher $z$ to late-time cosmographic bounds. First, we consider a model independent procedure to build up a numerical $f(z)$ by requiring th…
In this work, we have considered a model independent approach to study the nature of the late time cosmic acceleration. We have used the Pade approximation to parametrize the comoving distance. Consequently, from this comoving distance, we derive a parameterization for the Hubble parameter. Our parametrization is completely analytic and valid for late-time and matter dominated eras only. This parametrization possesses sub-percentage accuracy compared to any arbitrary cosmological model or parametrization up to matter dominated era. Using this parametrization, we put constraints on the paramete…
We study the impact of different bias and redshift-space models on the halo power spectrum, quantifying their effect by comparing the fit to a subset of realizations taken from the WizCOLA suite. These provide simulated power spectrum measurements between $k_{\rm min}$ = 0.03 h/Mpc and $k_{\rm max}$ = 0.29 h/Mpc, constructed using the comoving Lagrangian acceleration method. For the bias prescription we include (i) simple linear bias; (ii) the McDonald & Roy model and (iii) its coevolution variant introduced by Saito et al.; and (iv) a very general model including all terms up to one-loop and …
We use a dense redshift survey in the foreground of the Subaru GTO2deg^2 weak lensing field (centered at $α_{2000}$ = 16$^h04^m44^s$;$δ_{2000}$ =43^\circ11^{\prime}24^{\prime\prime}$) to assess the completeness and comment on the purity of massive halo identification in the weak lensing map. The redshift survey (published here) includes 4541 galaxies; 4405 are new redshifts measured with the Hectospec on the MMT. Among the weak lensing peaks with a signal-to-noise greater that 4.25, 2/3 correspond to individual massive systems; this result is essentially identical to the Geller et al. (2010) t…
We present a galaxy catalog simulator which turns N-body simulations with subhalos into multiband photometric mocks. The simulator assigns galaxy properties to each subhalo to reproduce the observed cluster galaxy halo occupation distribution, the radial and mass dependent variation in fractions of blue galaxies, the luminosity functions in clusters and the field, and the red-sequence in clusters. Moreover, the evolution of these parameters is tuned to match existing observational constraints. Field galaxies are sampled from existing multiband photometric surveys using derived galaxy photometr…
The combination of Galaxy-Galaxy Lensing (GGL) and Redshift Space Distortion of galaxy clustering (RSD) is a privileged technique to test General Relativity predictions, and break degeneracies between the growth rate of structure parameter $f$ and the amplitude of the linear power-spectrum $σ_8$. We perform a joint GGL and RSD analysis on 250 sq. degrees using shape catalogues from CFHTLenS and CFHT-Stripe 82, and spectroscopic redshifts from the BOSS CMASS sample. We adjust a model that includes non-linear biasing, RSD and Alcock-Paczynski effects. We find $f(z=0.57) =0.95\pm0.23$, $σ_8(z=0.5…
We present a first application of the subhalo abundance matching (SHAM) method to describe the redshift-space clustering of galaxies including the non-linear redshift-space distortion, i.e., the Fingers-of-God. We find that the standard SHAM connecting the luminosity of galaxies to the maximum circular velocity of subhalos well reproduces the luminosity dependence of redshift-space clustering of galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey in a wide range of scales from 0.3 to 40 Mpc/h. The result indicates that the SHAM approach is very promising for establishing a theoretical model of redshift-s…
Weak shocks in the intracluster medium may accelerate cosmic-ray protons and cosmic-ray electrons differently depending on the angle between the upstream magnetic field and the shock normal. In this work, we investigate how shock obliquity affects the production of cosmic rays in high-resolution simulations of galaxy clusters. For this purpose, we performed a magneto-hydrodynamical simulation of a galaxy cluster using the mesh refinement code \enzo. We use Lagrangian tracers to follow the properties of the thermal gas, the cosmic rays and the magnetic fields over time. We tested a number of di…
Accurate weak lensing mass estimates of clusters are needed in order to calibrate mass proxies for the cosmological exploitation of galaxy cluster surveys. Such measurements require accurate knowledge of the redshift distribution of the weak lensing source galaxies. In this context, we investigate the accuracy of photometric redshifts (photo-$z$s) computed by the 3D-HST team for the Cosmic Assembly Near-infrared Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey fields, which provide a relevant photometric reference data set for deep weak lensing studies. Through the comparison to spectroscopic redshifts and ph…
We introduce the curvature $Ω_k$ as a new free parameter in the Bayesian analysis using SNIa, BAO and CMB data, in a model with variable equation of state parameter $w(z)$. We compare the results using both the Constitution and Union 2 data sets, and also study possible low redshift transitions in the deceleration parameter $q(z)$. We found that, incorporating $Ω_k$ in the analysis, it is possible to make all the three observational probes consistent using both SNIa data sets. Our results support dark energy evolution at small redshift, and show that the tension between small and large redshif…
Redshifts of an astronomical body measured at multiple epochs (e.g., separated by 10 years) are different due to the cosmic expansion. This so-called Sandage-Loeb test offers a direct measurement of the expansion rate of the Universe. However, acceleration in the motion of Solar System with respect to the cosmic microwave background also changes redshifts measured at multiple epochs. If not accounted for, it yields a biased cosmological inference. To address this, we calculate the acceleration of Solar System with respect to the Local Group of galaxies to quantify the change in the measured re…
