We define the radical and weight of a skew left brace and provide some basic properties of these notions. In particular, we obtain a Wedderburn type decomposition for Artinian skew left braces. Furthermore, we prove analogues of a theorem of Wiegold, a theorem of Schur and its converse in the context of skew left braces. Finally, we apply these results to detect torsion in the structure group of a finite bijective non-degenerate set-theoretic solution of the Yang-Baxter equation.
Several aspects of relations between braces and non-degenerate involutive set-theoretic solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation are discussed and many consequences are derived. In particular, for each positive integer $n$ a finite square-free multipermutation solution of the Yang-Baxter equation with multipermutation level $n$ and an abelian involutive Yang-Baxter group is constructed. This answers a problem of Gateva-Ivanova and Cameron. It is also proved that finite non-degenerate involutive set-theoretic solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation whose associated involutive Yang-Baxter group is ab…
Rota-Baxter operators for groups were recently introduced by L. Guo, H. Lang, and Y. Sheng. V. G. Bardakov and V. Gubarev showed that with each Rota-Baxter operator one can associate a skew brace. Skew braces on a group $G$ can be characterised in terms of certain gamma functions from $G$ to its automorphism group $\operatorname{Aut}(G)$, that are defined by a functional equation. For the skew braces obtained from a Rota-Baxter operator the corresponding gamma functions take values in the inner automorphism group $\operatorname{Inn}(G)$ of $G$. In this paper, we give a characterisation of the …
This paper introduces Hopf braces, a new algebraic structure related to the Yang-Baxter equation which include Rump's braces and their non-commutative generalizations as particular cases. Several results of classical braces are still valid in our context. Furthermore, Hopf braces provide the right setting for considering left symmetric algebras as Lie-theoretical analogs of braces.
We study 2-reductive non-involutive non-degenerate set-theoretic solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation. We give a combinatorial construction of any such solution of any (even infinite) size. We also prove that solutions associated to a skew left brace are 2-reductive if and only if the skew left brace is nilpotent of class 2. Moreover, all such skew left braces are actually bi-skew left braces. We focus on these structures and we give several equivalent properties characterizing solutions associated to bi-skew left braces.
Using Bieberbach groups we study multipermutation involutive solutions to the Yang-Baxter equation. We use a linear representation of the structure group of an involutive solution to study the unique product property in such groups. An algorithm to find subgroups of a Bieberbach group isomorphic to the Promislow subgroup is introduced and then used in the case of structure group of involutive solutions. To extend the results related to retractability to non-involutive solutions, following the ideas of Meng, Ballester-Bolinches and Romero, we develop the theory of right $p$-nilpotent skew brace…
Studying solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation through skew braces, with an application to indecomposable involutive solutions with abelian permutation group
Let $r:X^{2}\rightarrow X^{2}$ be a set-theoretic solution of the Yang-Baxter equation on a finite set $X$. It was proven by Gateva-Ivanova and Van den Bergh that if $r$ is non-degenerate and involutive then the algebra $K\langle x \in X \mid xy =uv \mbox{ if } r(x,y)=(u,v)\rangle$ shares many properties with commutative polynomial algebras in finitely many variables; in particular this algebra is Noetherian, satisfies a polynomial identity and has Gelfand-Kirillov dimension a positive integer. Lebed and Vendramin recently extended this result to arbitrary non-degenerate bijective solutions. S…
In this article we propose an algebraic system, which is an abelian group $(A,+)$ with a family of non-associative and non-(left)distributive multiplications $\{\cdot_λ\}_{λ\in H}$. We call this algebraic system dynamical brace. The dynamical brace corresponds to a certain dynamical Yang-Baxter map (which is left nondegenerate and satisfy the unitary condition). Combinatorial aspects of the dynamical brace give us a correspondence between the dynamical brace and a certain family of subsets of $A\rtimes Aut(A)$. From this viewpoint we give an interpretation and examples of the dynamical brace.
Braces were introduced by Rump as a generalization of Jacobson radical rings. It turns out that braces allow us to use ring-theoretic and group-theoretic methods for studying involutive solutions to the Yang-Baxter equation. If braces are replaced by skew braces, then one can use similar methods for studying not necessarily involutive solutions. Here we collect problems related to (skew) braces and set-theoretic solutions to the Yang-Baxter equation.
We introduce strong left ideals of skew braces and prove that they produce non-trivial decomposition of set-theoretic solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation. We study factorization of skew left braces through strong left ideals and we prove analogs of Itô's theorem in the context of skew left braces. As a corollary, we obtain applications to the retractability problem of involutive non-degenerate solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation. Finally, we classify skew braces that contain no non-trivial proper ideals.
This paper shows that every finite non-degenerate involutive set theoretic solution (X,r) of the Yang-Baxter equation whose symmetric group has cardinality which a cube-free number is a multipermutation solution. Some properties of finite braces are also investigated (Theorems 3, 5 and 11). It is also shown that if A is a left brace whose cardinality is an odd number and (-a) b=-(ab) for all a, b A, then A is a two-sided brace and hence a Jacobson radical ring. It is also observed that the semidirect product and the wreath product of braces of a finite multipermutation level is a brace of a fi…
It is shown that over an arbitrary field there exists a nil algebra $R$ whose adjoint group $R^{o}$ is not an Engel group. This answers a question by Amberg and Sysak from 1997 [5] and answers related questions from [3, 44]. The case of an uncountable field also answers a recent question by Zelmanov. In [38], Rump introduced braces and radical chains $A^{n+1}=A\cdot A^{n}$ and $A^{(n+1)}=A^{(n)}\cdot A$ of a brace $A$. We show that the adjoint group $A^{o}$ of a finite right brace is a nilpotent group if and only if $A^{(n)}=0$ for some $n$. We also show that the adjoint group of $A^{o}$ of a …

We consider involutive, non-degenerate, finite set theoretic solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation. Such solutions can be always obtained using certain algebraic structures that generalize nil potent rings called braces. Our main aim here is to express such solutions in terms of admissible Drinfeld twists substantially extending recent preliminary results. We first identify the generic form of the twists associated to set theoretic solutions and we show that these twists are admissible, i.e. they satisfy a certain co-cycle condition. These findings are also valid for Baxterized solutions of th…
Left braces, introduced by Rump, have turned out to provide an important tool in the study of set theoretic solutions of the quantum Yang-Baxter equation. In particular, they have allowed to construct several new families of solutions. A left brace $(B,+,\cdot )$ is a structure determined by two group structures on a set $B$: an abelian group $(B,+)$ and a group $(B,\cdot)$, satisfying certain compatibility conditions. The main result of this paper shows that every finite abelian group $A$ is a subgroup of the additive group of a finite simple left brace $B$ with metabelian multiplicative grou…
We study series of left ideals of skew left braces that are analogs of upper central series of groups. These concepts allow us to define left and right nilpotent skew left braces. Several results related to these concepts are proved and applications to infinite left braces are given. Indecomposable solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation are explored using the structure of skew left braces.
It is proved that if a left brace $A$ has the operation $\ast$ associative, then $A$ is a two-sided brace. Consequently, $A$ is a Jacobson radical ring. This answers a question of Cedó, Gateva-Ivanova and Smoktunowicz.
Cycle sets are algebraic structures introduced by Rump to study set theoretic solutions to the Yang-Baxter equation. While studying cycle sets Rump also introduced braces, which have since overtaken cycle sets as a tool for studying solutions. This survey paper is primarily an introduction to cycle sets, motivating their study and relating them to key results of brace theory and Yang-Baxter theory. It is aimed at anyone from those already very familiar with braces but less familiar with cycle sets, to those with only a basic level of background in ring theory and group theory. We introduce cyc…
L. N. Childs defined a bi-skew brace to be a skew brace such that if we swap the role of the two operations, then we find again a skew brace. In this paper, we give a systematic analysis of bi-skew braces. We study nilpotency and solubility, and connections between bi-skew braces and set-theoretic solutions of the Yang--Baxter equation. Further, we deal with Byott's conjecture in the case of bi-skew braces, and we use bi-skew braces as a tool to solve a classification problem proposed by L. Vendramin. In the final part, we investigate brace blocks, defined by A. Koch to be families of group op…
Let $L/K$ be a $G$-Galois extension of fields with an $H$-Hopf Galois structure of type $N$. We study the ratio $GC(G, N)$, which is the number of intermediate fields $E$ with $K \subseteq E \subseteq L$ that are in the image of the Galois correspondence for the $H$-Hopf Galois structure on $L/K$, divided by the number of intermediate fields. By Galois descent, $L \otimes_K H = LN$ where $N$ is a $G$-invariant regular subgroup of $\mathrm{Perm}(G)$, and then $GC(G, N)$ is the number of $G$-invariant subgroups of $N$, divided by the number of subgroups of $G$. We look at the Galois corresponden…
Given a finite bijective non-degenerate set-theoretic solution $(X,r)$ of the Yang--Baxter equation we characterize when its structure monoid $M(X,r)$ is Malcev nilpotent. Applying this characterization to solutions coming from racks, we rediscover some results obtained recently by Lebed and Mortier, and by Lebed and Vendramin on the description of finite abelian racks and quandles. We also investigate bijective non-degenerate multipermutation (not necessarily finite) solutions $(X,r)$ and show, for example, that this property is equivalent to the solution associated to the structure monoid $M…
Braces and linear cycle sets are algebraic structures playing a major role in the classification of involutive set-theoretic solutions to the Yang-Baxter equation. This paper introduces two versions of their (co)homology theories. These theories mix the Harrison (co)homology for the abelian group structure and the (co)homology theory for general cycle sets, developed earlier by the authors. Different classes of brace extensions are completely classified in terms of second cohomology groups.
In this paper we study the problem of classification of indecomposable solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation. Using a scheme proposed by Bachiller, Cedó, and Jespers, and recent advances in the classification of braces we classify all indecomposable solutions with some particular permutation groups. We do this for all groups of size $pq$, all abelian groups of size $p^2q$ and all dihedral groups of size $p^2q$.
We define combinatorial representations of finite skew braces and use this idea to produce a database of skew braces of small size. This database is then used to explore different concepts of the theory of skew braces such as ideals, series of ideals, prime and semiprime ideals, Baer and Wedderburn radicals and solvability. The paper contains several questions.
The reflection equation of Cherednik is a counterpart to the celebrated Yang-Baxter equation, with importance in the theory of integrable systems. We obtain several new solutions of the reflection equation using braces building on the work of Smoktunowicz, Vendramin and Weston. In particular, we show that every brace yields several simple solutions and that a natural class of solutions is a near-ring. We find more solutions for factorizable rings. Some of our solutions apply to the original parameter-dependent equation.
We define a bi-skew brace to be a set $G$ with two group operations $\star$ and $\circ$ so that $(G, \circ, \star)$ is a skew brace with additive group $(G, \star)$ and also with additive group $(G, \circ)$. If $G$ is a skew brace, then $G$ corresponds to a Hopf Galois structure of type $(G, \star)$ on any Galois extension of fields with Galois group isomorphic to $(G, \circ)$. If $G$ is a bi-skew brace, then $G$ also corresponds to a Hopf Galois structure of type $(G, \circ)$ on a Galois extension of fields with Galois group isomorphic to $(G, \star)$. Many non-trivial examples exist. One sou…
