We consider a class of M-estimators of the parameters of a GARCH (p,q) model. These estimators involve score functions and, for adequate choices of the score functions, are asymptotically normal under milder moment assumptions than the usual quasi maximum likelihood, which makes them more reliable in the presence of heavy tails. We also consider weighted bootstrap approximations of the distributions of these M-estimators and establish their validity. Through extensive simulations, we demonstrate the robustness of these M-estimators under heavy tails and conduct a comparative study of the performance (bias and mean squared errors) of various score functions and the accuracy (confidence interval coverage rates) of their bootstrap approximations. In addition to the GARCH (1, 1) model, our simulations also involve higher-order models such as GARCH~(2, 1) and GARCH~(1,~\!2) which so far have received relatively little attention in the literature. We also consider the case of order-misspecified models. Finally, we use our M-estimators in the analysis of two real financial time series fitted with GARCH (1, 1) or GARCH (2, 1) models.
We advocate the use of an Indirect Inference method to estimate the parameter of a COGARCH(1,1) process for equally spaced observations. This requires that the true model can be simulated and a reasonable estimation method for an approximate auxiliary model. We follow previous approaches and use linear projections leading to an auxiliary autoregressive model for the squared COGARCH returns. The asymptotic theory of the Indirect Inference estimator relies {on a uniform SLLN and asymptotic normality of the parameter estimates of the auxiliary model, which require continuity and differentiability…
We generalize a recent class of tests for univariate normality that are based on the empirical moment generating function to the multivariate setting, thus obtaining a class of affine invariant, consistent and easy-to-use goodness-of-fit tests for multinormality. The test statistics are suitably weighted $L^2$-statistics, and we provide their asymptotic behavior both for i.i.d. observations as well as in the context of testing that the innovation distribution of a multivariate GARCH model is Gaussian. We study the finite-sample behavior of the new tests, compare the criteria with alternative e…
Asymmetric power GARCH models have been widely used to study the higher order moments of financial returns, while their quantile estimation has been rarely investigated. This paper introduces a simple monotonic transformation on its conditional quantile function to make the quantile regression tractable. The asymptotic normality of the resulting quantile estimators is established under either stationarity or non-stationarity. Moreover, based on the estimation procedure, new tests for strict stationarity and asymmetry are also constructed. This is the first try of the quantile estimation for no…
The quasi-maximum likelihood estimation is a commonly-used method for estimating GARCH parameters. However, such estimators are sensitive to outliers and their asymptotic normality is proved under the finite fourth moment assumption on the underlying error distribution. In this paper, we propose a novel class of estimators of the GARCH parameters based on ranks, called R-estimators, with the property that they are asymptotic normal under the existence of a more than second moment of the errors and are highly efficient. We also consider the weighted bootstrap approximation of the finite sample …
In this paper, we build upon the asymptotic theory for GARCH processes, considering the general class of augmented GARCH($p$, $q$) processes. Our contribution is to complement the well-known univariate asymptotics by providing a joint (bivariate) functional central limit theorem of the sample quantile and the r-th absolute centred sample moment. This extends existing results in the case of identically and independently distributed random variables. We show that the conditions for the convergence of the estimators in the univariate case suffice even for the joint bivariate asymptotics. We illus…
Penalized spline smoothing of time series and its asymptotic properties are studied. A data-driven algorithm for selecting the smoothing parameter is developed. The proposal is applied to define a semiparametric extension of the well-known Spline-GARCH, called a P-Spline-GARCH, based on the log-data transformation of the squared returns. It is shown that now the errors process is exponentially strong mixing with finite moments of all orders. Asymptotic normality of the P-spline smoother in this context is proved. Practical relevance of the proposal is illustrated by data examples and simulatio…

A standard model of (conditional) heteroscedasticity, i.e., the phenomenon that the variance of a process changes over time, is the Generalized AutoRegressive Conditional Heteroskedasticity (GARCH) model, which is especially important for economics and finance. GARCH models are typically estimated by the Quasi-Maximum Likelihood (QML) method, which works under mild statistical assumptions. Here, we suggest a finite sample approach, called ScoPe, to construct distribution-free confidence regions around the QML estimate, which have exact coverage probabilities, despite no additional assumptions …
We provide novel characterizations of multivariate normality that incorporate both the characteristic function and the moment generating function, and we employ these results to construct a class of affine invariant, consistent and easy-to-use goodness-of-fit tests for normality. The test statistics are suitably weighted $L^2$-statistics, and we provide their asymptotic behavior both for i.i.d. observations as well as in the context of testing that the innovation distribution of a multivariate GARCH model is Gaussian. We also study the finite-sample behavior of the new tests and compare the ne…
We prove the consistency and asymptotic normality of the Laplacian Quasi-Maximum Likelihood Estimator (QMLE) for a general class of causal time series including ARMA, AR($\infty$), GARCH, ARCH($\infty$), ARMA-GARCH, APARCH, ARMA-APARCH,..., processes. We notably exhibit the advantages (moment order and robustness) of this estimator compared to the classical Gaussian QMLE. Numerical simulations confirms the accuracy of this estimator.
A Markov switching asymmetric GARCH model which imposes more leverage effect of the negative shocks is considered. The asymptotic behavior of the second moment is investigated and an upper bound for it is calculated. A bayesian strategy through Gibbs and griddy Gibbs sampling is used to estimate the parameters. Finally we study the performance of the model by two real data sets. We show that this model has the best in-sample fit via DIC and provides a better forecast when the negative skewness is large enough.
Trimmed L-moments, were introduced by Elamir and Seheult(2003) to proposed a new estimation method for multi-parameter distributions when the mean doesn't exist or for heavy tailed distribution where the L-moments method which proposed by Hosking (1990) is not valid because the absence of theoretical L-moments. In this paper a new estimation method based on trimmed L-moments of multi-parameter copulas is proposed with a simulation study. The consistency and the asymptotic normality of the new estimator also established.
