We experimentally study the thermoelectrical signature of individual skyrmions in chiral Pt/Co/Ru multilayers. Using a combination of controlled nucleation, single skyrmion annihilation, and magnetic field dependent measurements the thermoelectric signature of individual skyrmions is characterized. The observed signature is explained by the anomalous Nernst effect of the skyrmions spin structure. Possible topological contributions to the observed thermoelectrical signature are discussed. Such thermoelectrical characterization allows for non-invasive detection and counting of skyrmions and enables fundamental studies of topological thermoelectric effects on the nano scale
The magnetic skyrmion is a nanoscale topological object characterized by the winding of the magnetic moments, appearing in magnetic materials with broken inversion symmetry. Because of its low current threshold for driving, the skyrmions have been intensely studied toward novel storage applications by using electron-beam, X-ray, and visible light microscopies. Here, we show that the skyrmions can be imaged via thermoelectric signals of spin-caloritronic phenomena in combination with focused heating. We applied a local temperature gradient to a CoFeB/Ta/W multilayer film with scanning a heating…
Thermoelectric properties of a model Skyrmion crystal were theoretically investigated, and it was found that its large anomalous Hall conductivity, corresponding to large Chern numbers induced by its peculiar spin structure leads to a large transverse thermoelectric voltage through the anomalous Nernst effect. This implies the possibility of finding good thermoelectric materials among Skyrmion systems, and thus motivates our quests for them by means of the first-principles calculations as were employed here.
Magnetic skyrmions are topologically protected whirling spin textures that can be stabilized in magnetic materials in which a chiral interaction is present. Their limited size together with their robustness against the external perturbations promote them as the ultimate magnetic storage bit in a novel generation of memory and logic devices. Despite many examples of the signature of magnetic skyrmions in the electrical signal, only low temperature measurements, mainly in magnetic materials with B20 crystal structure, have demonstrated the skyrmions contribution to the electrical transport prope…
We report a study of the magnetization reversals and skyrmion configurations in two systems - Pt/Co/MgO and Ir/Fe/Co/Pt multilayers, where magnetic skyrmions are stabilized by a combination of dipolar and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions (DMI). First Order Reversal Curve (FORC) diagrams of low-DMI Pt/Co/MgO and high-DMI Ir/Fe/Co/Pt exhibit stark differences, which are identified by micromagnetic simulations to be indicative of hybrid and pure Néel skyrmions, respectively. Tracking the evolution of FORC features in multilayers with dipolar interactions and DMI, we find that the negative FORC …
We present a theoretical study of the $I-V$ tunneling characteristic between two parallel two-dimensional electron gases in a perpendicular magnetic field when both are near filling factor $ν=1$. Finite-size calculations of the single-layer spectral functions in the spherical geometry and analytical expressions for the disk geometry in the thermodynamic limit show that the current in the presence of skyrmions reflects in a direct way their underlying structure. It is also shown that fingerprints of the electron-electron interaction pseudopotentials are present in such a current.
We observe the signature of zero-field ground-state skyrmions in BiSb topological insulator / MnGa bi-layers by using the topological Hall effect (THE). We observe a large critical interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya-Interaction energy (5.0 pJ/m) at the BiSb/MnGa interface that can be tailored by controlling the annealing temperature of the MnGa template. The THE was observed at room temperature even under absence of an external magnetic field, which gives the strong evidence for the existence of thermodynamically stable skyrmions in MnGa/BiSb bi-layers. Our results will give insight into the ro…
A novel type of charged excitation, known as a Skyrmion, has recently been discovered in quantum Hall systems with filling factor near ν= 1. A Skyrmion -- which can be thought of as a topological twist in the spin density of the electron gas -- has the same charge as an electron, but a much larger spin. In this review we present a detailed theoretical investigation of the optical properties of Skyrmions. Our results provide means for the optical detection of Skyrmions using photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. We first consider the optical properties of Skyrmions in disordered systems. A calcu…
Magnetic multilayers are promising tuneable systems for hosting magnetic skyrmions at/above room temperature. Revealing their intriguing switching mechanisms and associated inherent electrical responses are prerequisites for developing skyrmionic devices. In this work, we theoretically demonstrate the annihilation of single skyrmions occurring through a multilayer structure, which is mediated by hopping dynamics of topological hedgehog singularities known as Bloch points. The emerging intralayer dynamics of Bloch points are dominated by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, and their propagat…
The photoluminescence spectrum of quantized Hall states near filling factor ν= 1 is investigated theoretically. For ν>= 1 the spectrum consists of a right-circularly polarized (RCP) line and a left-circularly polarized (LCP) line, whose mean energy: (1) does not depend on the electron g factor for spin-1/2 quasielectrons, (2) does depend on g for charged spin-texture excitations (skyrmions). For ν< 1 the spectrum consists of a LCP line shifted down in energy from the LCP line at ν>= 1. The g-factor dependence of the red shift of the LCP line determines the nature of the negatively charged exci…

Skyrmions are nanoscale spin configurations with topological properties that hold great promise for spintronic devices. Here, we establish their Néel texture, helicity, and size in Ir/Fe/Co/Pt multilayer films by constructing a multipole expansion to model their stray field signatures and applying it to magnetic force microscopy (MFM) images. Furthermore, the demonstrated sensitivity to inhomogeneity in skyrmion properties, coupled with a unique capability to estimate the pinning force governing dynamics, portends broad applicability in the burgeoning field of topological spin textures.
We study a quantum dot coupled to two semiconducting reservoirs, when the dot level and the electrochemical potential are both close to a band edge in the reservoirs. This is modelled with an exactly solvable Hamiltonian without interactions (the Fano-Anderson model). The model is known to show an abrupt transition as the dot-reservoir coupling is increased into the strong-coupling regime for a broad class of band structures. This transition involves an infinite-lifetime bound state appearing in the band gap. We find a signature of this transition in the continuum states of the model, visible …

We theoretically investigate the possibility to use thermolectric measurements to detect Majorana bound states and to investigate their coupling to a dissipative environment. The particle-hole symmetry of Majorana states would normally lead to a vanishing Seebeck coefficient, i.e., a vanishing open-circuit voltage resulting from a temperature gradient. We discuss how coupling to a quantum dot with a gate-controlled energy level breaks particle-hole symmetry in a tunable manner. The resulting gate-dependent Seebeck coefficient provides a new way to evidence the existence of Majorana states, whi…
We analyze thermally induced spin and charge transport in HgTe/CdTe quantum wells on the basis of the numerical non-equilibrium Green's function technique in the linear response regime. In the topologically non-trivial regime, we find a clear signature of the gap of the edge states due to their finite overlap from opposite sample boundaries -- both in the charge Seebeck and spin Nernst signal. We are able to fully understand the physical origin of the thermoelectric transport signatures of edge and bulk states based on simple analytical models. Interestingly, we derive that the spin Nernst sig…
Skyrmions are topologically protected, two-dimensional, localized hedgehogs and whorls of spin. Originally invented as a concept in field theory for nuclear interactions, skyrmions are central to a wide range of phenomena in condensed matter. Their realization at room temperature (RT) in magnetic multilayers has generated considerable interest, fueled by technological prospects and the access granted to fundamental questions. The interaction of skyrmions with charge carriers gives rise to exotic electrodynamics, such as the topological Hall effect (THE), the Hall response to an emergent magnet…
Interference effects in quantum dots between different transport channels can lead to a strong suppression of conductance, which cuts like a canyon through the common conductance plot [Phys. Rev. Lett. 104, 186804 (2010)]. In the present work, we consider the thermoelectric transport properties of the canyon of conductance suppression using the second-order von Neumann approach. We observe a characteristic signal for the zeros of the thermopower. This demonstrates that thermoelectric measurements are an interesting complimentary tool to study complex phenomena for transport through confined sy…

We report a numerical renormalization-group study of the thermoelectric effect in the single-electron transistor (SET) and side-coupled geometries. As expected, the computed thermal conductance and thermopower curves show signatures of the Kondo effect and of Fano interference. The thermopower curves are also affected by particle-hole asymmetry.
We investigate the formation and stability of the skyrmion crystal phase in antiferromagnetic thin films subjected to fieldlike torques such as, e.g., those induced by an electric current in CuMnAs and Mn$_{2}$Au via the inverse spin-galvanic effect. We show that the skyrmion lattice represents the ground state of the antiferromagnet in a substantial area of the phase diagram, parametrized by the staggered field and the (effective) uniaxial anisotropy constant. Skyrmion motion can be driven in the crystal phase by the spin transfer effect. In the metallic scenario, itinerant electrons experien…
The half filled Landau level is expected to be approximately particle-hole symmetric, which requires an extension of the Halperin-Lee-Read (HLR) theory of the compressible state observed at this filling. Recent work indicates that, when particle-hole symmetry is preserved, the composite Fermions experience a quantized $π$-Berry phase upon winding around the composite Fermi-surface, analogous to Dirac fermions at the surface of a 3D topological insulator. In contrast, the effective low energy theory of the composite fermion liquid originally proposed by HLR lacks particle-hole symmetry and has …
In the present work, we theoretically analyze the steady-state thermoelectric transport through a single-molecule junction with a vibrating bridge. Thermally induced charge current in the system is explored using a nonequilibrium Green's functions formalism. We study combined effects of Coulomb interactions between charge carriers on the bridge and electron-phonon interactions on the thermocurrent beyond the linear response regime. It is shown that electron-vibron interactions may significantly affect both magnitude and direction of the thermocurrent, and vibrational signatures may appear.
We consider the steady-state thermoelectric transport through a vibrating molecular quantum dot that is contacted to macroscopic leads. For moderate electron-phonon interaction strength and comparable electronic and phononic timescales, we investigate the impact of the formation of a local polaron on the thermoelectric properties of the junction. We apply a variational Lang-Firsov transformation and solve the equations of motion in the Kadanoff-Baym formalism up to second order in the dot-lead coupling parameter. We calculate the thermoelectric current and voltage for finite temperature differ…
A magnon Nernst effect, an antiferromagnetic analogue of the magnon Hall effect in ferromagnetic insulators, has been studied experimentally for a layered antiferromagnetic insulator MnPS3 in contact with two Pt strips. Thermoelectric voltage in the Pt strips grown on MnPS3 single crystals exhibits non-monotonic temperature dependence at low temperatures, which cannot be explained by electronic origins in Pt but can be ascribed to the inverse spin Hall voltage induced by a magnon Nernst effect. Control of antiferromagnetic domains in the MnPS3 crystal by magnetoelectric cooling is found to mod…
We study inelastic vibration-assisted charge transfer effects in two-site molecular junctions, focusing on signatures of vibrational anharmonicity on the electrical characteristics and the thermoelectric response of the junction. We consider three types of oscillators: harmonic, anharmonic-Morse allowing bond dissociation, and harmonic-quartic, mimicking a confinement potential. Using a quantum master equation method which is perturbative in the electron-vibration interaction we find that the (inelastic) electrical and thermal conductances can be largely affected by the nature of the vibration…
In the Kerr rotation geometry, magneto optic memory devices typically suffer from low figure-of-merit (FOM) and long write times. We show that skyrmions formed at the interface of a thin-film multiferroic and a topological insulator can give rise to high FOM magneto optic Kerr effects (MOKEs). Huge differential MOKE can arise in parts of the phase diagram. Resonance like features in the MOKE spectra arising from the induced low energy TI bandgap, the multiferroic-film thickness, and the high energy Drude like behavior are resolved and explained. The Fermi level dependence of the MOKE signature…
Topological spin textures in an itinerant ferromagnet, SrRuO$_3$ is studied combining Hall transport measurements and numerical simulations. We observe characteristic signatures of the Topological Hall Effect associated with skyrmions. A relatively large thickness of our films and absence of heavy metal layers make the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction an unlikely source of these topological spin textures. Additionally, the transport anomalies exhibit an unprecedented robustness to magnetic field tilting and temperature. Our numerical simulations suggest that this unconventional be…
Detailed measurements of the longitudinal thermopower of two-dimensional electrons in the first excited Landau level are reported. Clear signatures of numerous fractional quantized Hall states, including those at $ν= 5/2$ and 7/3, are observed in the magnetic field and temperature dependence of the thermopower. An abrupt collapse of the thermopower is observed below about $T= 40$ mK at those filling factors where re-entrant insulating electronic states have been observed in conventional resistive transport studies. The thermopower observed at $ν= 5/2$ is discussed in the context of recent theo…
We investigate thermoelectric properties of correlated quantum dots and molecules, described by a single level Anderson model coupled to conduction electron leads, by using Wilson's numerical renormalization group method. In the Kondo regime, the thermopower, $S(T)$, exhibits two sign changes, at temperatures $T=T_{1}$ and $T=T_{2}>T_{1}$. We find that $T_{2}$ is of order the level width $Γ$ and $T_{1}> T_{p}\approx T_{K}$, where $T_{p}$ is the position of the Kondo induced peak in the thermopower and $T_{K}$ is the Kondo scale. No sign change is found outside the Kondo regime, or, for weak co…

We derive a generalized set of Ward identities that captures the effects of topological charge on Hall transport. The Ward identities follow from the 2+1 dimensional momentum algebra, which includes a central extension proportional to the topological charge density. In the presence of topological objects like Skyrmions, we observe that the central term leads to a direct relation between the thermal Hall conductivity and the topological charge density. We extend this relation to incorporate the effects of a magnetic field and an electric current. The topological charge density produces a distin…
We study the effect of thermal equilibration on the transport properties of a weakly interacting one-dimensional electron system. Although equilibration is severely suppressed due to phase-space restrictions and conservation laws, it can lead to intriguing signatures in partially equilibrated quantum wires. We consider an ideal homogeneous quantum wire. We find a finite temperature correction to the quantized conductance, which for a short wire scales with its length, but saturates to a length-independent value once the wire becomes exponentially long. We also discuss thermoelectric properties…
Magnetic hopfions are topologically protected three-dimensional solitons that are constituted by a tube which exhibits a topologically nontrivial spin texture in the cross-section profile and is closed to a torus. Here we show that the hopfion's locally uncompensated emergent field leads to a topological Hall signature, although the topological Hall effect vanishes on the global level. The topological Hall signature is switchable by magnetic fields or electric currents and occurs independently of the anomalous and conventional Hall effects. It can therefore be exploited to electrically detect …
We study a model for the transverse thermoelectric response due to quantum superconducting fluctuations in a two-leg Josephson ladder, subject to a perpendicular magnetic field B and a transverse temperature gradient. The off-diagonal Peltier coefficient (α_{xy}) and the Nernst effect are evaluated as functions of B and the temperature T. The Nernst effect is found to exhibit a prominent peak close to the superconductor-insulator transition (SIT), which becomes progressively enhanced at low T. In addition, we derive a relation to diamagnetic response: α_{xy}= -M/T_0, where M is the equilibrium…
We study the quench dynamics of non-Hermitian topological models with non-Hermitian skin effects. Adopting the non-Bloch band theory and projecting quench dynamics onto the generalized Brillouin zone, we find that emergent topological structures, in the form of dynamic skyrmions, exist in the generalized momentum-time domain, and are correlated with the non-Bloch topological invariants of the static Hamiltonians. The skyrmion structures anchor on the fixed points of dynamics whose existence are conditional on the coincidence of generalized Brillouin zones of the pre- and post-quench Hamiltonia…
We investigate theoretically the thermoelectric transport properties of a T-shaped double quantum dot side-coupled to a topological superconducting nanowire hosting Majorana zero-energy modes. The calculations are performed using the numerical renormalization group method focusing on the transport regime, where the system exhibits the two-stage Kondo effect. It is shown that the leakage of Majorana quasiparticles into the double dot system results in a half-suppression of the second stage of the Kondo effect, which is revealed through fractional values of the charge and heat conductances and g…
The $α$-$T_3$ lattice, an interpolation model between the honeycomb lattice of graphene($α=0$) and the dice lattice($α=1$), undergoes a topological phase transition across $α=1/\sqrt{2}$ when exposed to a circularly polarized off-resonant light. We study Berry phase mediated bulk magnetic and anomalous thermoelectric responses in order to capture the topological signatures of a driven $α$-$T_3$ lattice. It is revealed that both the Berry curvature and the orbital magnetic moment associated with the flat band change their respective signs across $α=1/\sqrt{2}$. The off-resonant light distorts t…
