In this work, we introduce a fast numerical algorithm to solve the time-dependent radiative transport equation (RTE). Our method uses the integral formulation of RTE and applies the treecode algorithm to reduce the computational complexity from O(M^{2+1/d} ) to O(M^{1+1/d} log M ), where M is the number of points in the physical domain. The error analysis is presented and numerical experiments are performed to validate our algorithm.
We study in this work an integral formulation for the radiative transfer equation (RTE) in anisotropic media with truncated approximation to the scattering phase function. The integral formulation consists of a coupled system of integral equations for the angular moments of the transport solution. We analyze the approximate separability of the kernel functions in these integral formulations, deriving asymptotic lower and upper bounds on the number of terms needed in a separable approximation of the kernel functions as the moment grows. Our analysis provides the mathematical understanding on wh…

In this article, we analyse an integral equation of the second kind that represents the solution of $N$ interacting dielectric spherical particles undergoing mutual polarisation. A traditional analysis can not quantify the scaling of the stability constants -- and thus the approximation error -- with respect to the number $N$ of involved dielectric spheres. We develop a new a priori error analysis that demonstrates $N$-independent stability of the continuous and discrete formulations of the integral equation. Consequently, we obtain convergence rates that are independent of $N$.
This paper is concerned with the cavity scattering problem in an infinite thin plate, where the out-of-plane displacement is governed by the two-dimensional biharmonic wave equation. Based on an operator splitting, the scattering problem is recast into a coupled boundary value problem for the Helmholtz and modified Helmholtz equations. A novel boundary integral formulation is proposed for the coupled problem. By introducing an appropriate regularizer, the well-posedness is established for the system of boundary integral equations. Moreover, the convergence analysis is carried out for the semi-…
We present a novel computational scheme to solve acoustic wave transmission problems over composite scatterers, i.e. penetrable obstacles possessing junctions or triple points. Our continuous problem is cast as a multiple traces time-domain boundary integral formulation valid in two and three dimensions. Numerically, our two-dimensional non-conforming spatial discretization uses spectral elements based on second kind Chebyshev polynomials while a convolution quadrature scheme is performed in the complex frequency domain. Computational experiments reveal multistep and multistage convolution qua…
The boundary element method (BEM) is an efficient numerical method for simulating harmonic wave propagation. It uses boundary integral formulations of the Helmholtz equation at the interfaces of piecewise homogeneous domains. The discretisation of its weak formulation leads to a dense system of linear equations, which is typically solved with an iterative linear method such as GMRES. The application of BEM to simulating wave propagation through large-scale geometries is only feasible when compression and preconditioning techniques reduce the computational footprint. Furthermore, many different…
In this paper, we consider an acoustic wave transmission problem with mixed boundary conditions of Dirichlet, Neumann, and impedance type. The transmission interfaces may join the domain boundary in a general way independent of the location of the boundary conditions. We will derive a formulation as a \textit{direct}, \textit{space-time retarded boundary integral equation}, where both Cauchy data are kept as unknowns on the impedance part of the boundary. This requires the definition of single-trace spaces which incorporate homogeneous Dirichlet and Neumann conditions on the corresponding part…
The boundary element method is an efficient algorithm for simulating acoustic propagation through homogeneous objects embedded in free space. The conditioning of the system matrix strongly depends on physical parameters such as density, wavespeed and frequency. In particular, high contrast in density and wavespeed across a material interface leads to an ill-conditioned discretisation matrix. Therefore, the convergence of Krylov methods to solve the linear system is slow. Here, specialised boundary integral formulations are designed for the case of acoustic scattering at high-contrast media. Th…
We propose domain decomposition preconditioners for the solution of an integral equation formulation of forward and inverse acoustic scattering problems with point scatterers. We study both forward and inverse problems and propose preconditioning techniques to accelerate the iterative solvers. For the forward scattering problem, we extend the domain decomposition based preconditioning techniques presented for partial differential equations in {\em "A restricted additive Schwarz preconditioner for general sparse linear systems", SIAM Journal on Scientific Computing, 21 (1999), pp. 792--797}, to…

A non-local slender body approximation for slender flexible fibers in Stokes flow can be derived, yielding an integral equation along the center lines of the fibers that involves a slenderness parameter. The formulation contains a so-called finite part singular integral, and can in the case of several fibers or evaluation of the flow field require the evaluation of nearly singular integrals. We introduce a numerical technique to accurately and efficiently evaluate the finite part integral. This technique can be applied combined with any panel based quadrature rule and will add no additional co…
We analyze the well posedness of certain field-only boundary integral equations (BIE) for frequency domain electromagnetic scattering from perfectly conducting spheres. Starting from the observations that (1) the three components of the scattered electric field $\mathbf{E}^s(\mathbf{x})$ and (2) scalar quantity $\mathbf{E}^s(\mathbf{x})\cdot\mathbf{x}$ are radiative solutions of the Helmholtz equation, novel boundary integral equation formulations of electromagnetic scattering from perfectly conducting obstacles can be derived using Green's identities applied to the aforementioned quantities a…
We propose in this work a fast numerical algorithm for solving the equation of radiative transfer (ERT) in isotropic media. The algorithm has two steps. In the first step, we derive an integral equation for the angularly averaged ERT solution by taking advantage of the isotropy of the scattering kernel, and solve the integral equation with a fast multipole method (FMM). In the second step, we solve a scattering-free transport equation to recover the original ERT solution. Numerical simulations are presented to demonstrate the performance of the algorithm for both homogeneous and inhomogeneous …
In this paper the discrete eigenvalues of elliptic second order differential operators in $L^2(\mathbb{R}^n)$, $n \in \mathbb{N}$, with singular $δ$- and $δ'$-interactions are studied. We show the self-adjointness of these operators and derive equivalent formulations for the eigenvalue problems involving boundary integral operators. These formulations are suitable for the numerical computations of the discrete eigenvalues and the corresponding eigenfunctions by boundary element methods. We provide convergence results and show numerical examples.
The Poisson-Boltzmann equation offers an efficient way to study electrostatics in molecular settings. Its numerical solution with the boundary element method is widely used, as the complicated molecular surface is accurately represented by the mesh, and the point charges are accounted for explicitly. In fact, there are several well-known boundary integral formulations available in the literature. This work presents a generalized expression of the boundary integral representation of the implicit solvent model, giving rise to new forms to compute the electrostatic potential. Moreover, it propose…
A non-singular formulation of the boundary integral method (BIM) is presented for the Laplace equation whereby the well-known singularities that arise from the fundamental solution are eliminated analytically. A key advantage of this approach is that numerical errors that arise due to the proximity of nodes located on osculating boundaries are suppressed. This is particularly relevant in multi-scale problems where high accuracy is required without undue increase in computational cost when the spacing between boundaries become much smaller than their characteristic dimensions. The elimination o…
This paper presents a second-kind surface integral equation method for the numerical solution of frequency-domain electromagnetic scattering problems by locally perturbed layered media in three spatial dimensions. Unlike standard approaches, the proposed methodology does not involve the use of layer Green functions. It instead leverages an indirect Müller formulation in terms of free-space Green functions that entails integration over the entire unbounded penetrable boundary. The integral equation domain is effectively reduced to a small-area surface by means of the windowed Green function met…
We study boundary integral formulations for an interior/exterior initial boundary value problem arising from the thermo-elasto-dynamic equations in a homogeneous and isotropic domain. The time dependence is handled, based on Lubich's approach, through a passage to the Laplace domain. We focus on the cases where one of the unknown fields satisfies a Dirichlet boundary condition, while the other one is subject to conditions of Neumann type. In the Laplace domain, combined single- and double-layer potential boundary integral operators are introduced and proven to be coercive. Based on the Laplace…
