The fundamental duality theories relating algebra and geometry that were discovered in the mid-20th century can also be applied to logic via its algebraization under categorical logic. They thereby result in known and new completeness theorems. This idea can be taken even further via what is sometimes called ``categorification'' to establish a new connection between logic and geometry, a glimpse of which can also be had in topos theory.
An introduction is given to the logic of sheaves of structures and to set theoretic forcing constructions based on this logic. Using these tools, it is presented an alternative proof of the independence of the Continuum Hypothesis; which simplifies and unifies the classical boolean and intuitionistic approaches, avoiding the difficulties linked to the categorical machinery of the topoi based approach.
We study representations of MV-algebras -- equivalently, unital lattice-ordered abelian groups -- through the lens of Stone-Priestley duality, using canonical extensions as an essential tool. Specifically, the theory of canonical extensions implies that the (Stone-Priestley) dual spaces of MV-algebras carry the structure of topological partial commutative ordered semigroups. We use this structure to obtain two different decompositions of such spaces, one indexed over the prime MV-spectrum, the other over the maximal MV-spectrum. These decompositions yield sheaf representations of MV-algebras, …
Based on the Sheaf Logic approach to set theoretic forcing, a hierarchy of Quantum Variable Sets is constructed which generalizes and simplifies the analogous construction developed by Takeuti on boolean valued models of set theory. Over this model two alternative proofs of Takeuti's correspondence, between self adjoint operators and the real numbers of the model, are given. This approach results to be more constructive showing a direct relation with the Gelfand representation theorem, revealing also the importance of these results with respect to the interpretation of Quantum Mechanics in clo…
From a logical point of view, Stone duality for Boolean algebras relates theories in classical propositional logic and their collections of models. The theories can be seen as presentations of Boolean algebras, and the collections of models can be topologized in such a way that the theory can be recovered from its space of models. The situation can be cast as a formal duality relating two categories of syntax and semantics, mediated by homming into a common dualizing object, in this case 2. In the present work, we generalize the entire arrangement from propositional to first-order logic. Boole…
Although contemporary model theory has been called "algebraic geometry minus fields", the formal methods of the two fields are radically different. This dissertation aims to shrink that gap by presenting a theory of logical schemes, geometric entities which relate to first-order logical theories in much the same way that algebraic schemes relate to commutative rings. The construction relies on a Grothendieck-style representation theorem which associates every coherent or classical first-order theory with an affine scheme: a topological groupoid (the spectrum of the theory) together with a shea…
In this paper we develop an almost general process to switch from abstract logics in the sense of Brown and Suszko to lattices. With this method we can establish dualities between some categories of abstract logics to the correspondent topological space categories. In more detail we will explain the duality between the category of abstract intuitionistic logics with intuitionistic morphisms and the category of Esakia spaces with the Esakia morphisms.
We exhibit Pontryagin duality as a special case of Stone duality in a continuous logic setting. More specifically, given an abelian topological group $A$, and $\mathcal F$ the family (group) of continuous homomorphisms from $A$ to the circle group $\mathbb T$, then, viewing $(A,+)$ equipped with the collection $\mathcal F$ as a continuous logic structure $M$, we show that the local type space $S_\mathcal F(M)$ is precisely the Pontryagin dual of the group $\mathcal F$ where the latter is considered as a discrete group. We conclude, using Pontryagin duality (between compact and discrete abelian…
We identify and highlight certain landmark results in Samson Abramsky's work which we believe are fundamental to current developments and future trends. In particular, we focus on the use of (i) topological duality methods to solve problems in logic and computer science; (ii) category theory and, more particularly, free (and co-free) constructions; (iii) these tools to unify the `power' and `structure' strands in computer science.

Using Sheaf duality theory of Comer for cylindric algebras, we give a representation theorem of of distributive bounded lattices expanded by modalities (functions distributing over joins) as the continuous sections of sheaves. Our representation is defined via a contravariant functor. We give applications to many-valued logics logics and various modifications of first order logic and multi-modal logic, set in an algebraic framework.
In this paper we investigate the fragment of intuitionistic logic which only uses conjunction (meet) and implication, using finite duality for distributive lattices and universal models. We give a description of the finitely generated universal models of this fragment and give a complete characterization of the up-sets of Kripke models of intuitionistic logic which can be defined by meet-implication-formulas. We use these results to derive a new version of subframe formulas for intuitionistic logic and to show that the uniform interpolants of meet-implication-formulas are not necessarily unifo…
In this paper, we study logics of bounded distributive residuated lattices with modal operators considering $\Box$ and $\Diamond$ in a noncommutative setting. We introduce relational semantics for such substructural modal logics. We prove that any canonical logic is Kripke complete via discrete duality and canonical extensions. That is, we show that a modal extension of the distributive full Lambek calculus is the logic of its frames if its variety is closed under canonical extensions. After that, we establish a Priestley-style duality between residuated distributive modal algebras and topolog…
The inverse method is a saturation based theorem proving technique; it relies on a forward proof-search strategy and can be applied to cut-free calculi enjoying the subformula property. Here we apply this method to derive the unprovability of a goal formula G in Intuitionistic Propositional Logic. To this aim we design a forward calculus FRJ(G) for Intuitionistic unprovability which is prone to constructively ascertain the unprovability of a formula G by providing a concise countermodel for it; in particular we prove that the generated countermodels have minimal height. Moreover, we clarify th…
In this paper, we give a duality theorem between the category of $κ$-additive complete atomic modal algebras and the category of $κ$-downward directed multi-relational Kripke frames, for any cardinal number $κ$. Multi-relational Kripke frames are not Kripke frames for multi-modal logic, but frames for monomodal logics in which the modal operator $\Diamond$ does not distribute over (possibly infinite) disjunction, in general. We first define homomorphisms of multi-relational Kripke frames, and then show the equivalence between the category of $κ$-downward directed multi-relational Kripke frames…
We investigate atomicity of free algebras and various forms of amalgamation for BL and MV algebras, and also Heyting algebras, though the latter algebras may not be linearly ordered, so strictly speaking their corresponding intuitionistic logic does not belong to many valued logic. Generalizing results of Comer proved in the classical first order case; working out a sheaf duality on the Zarski topology defined on the prime spectrum of such algebras, we infer several definability theorems, and obtain a representation theorem for theories as continuous sections of Sheaves. We also prove an omitt…
In flowchart languages, predicates play an interesting double role. In the textual representation, they are often presented as conditions, i.e., expressions which are easily combined with other conditions (often via Boolean combinators) to form new conditions, though they only play a supporting role in aiding branching statements choose a branch to follow. On the other hand, in the graphical representation they are typically presented as decisions, intrinsically capable of directing control flow yet mostly oblivious to Boolean combination. While categorical treatments of flowchart languages ar…
Modern categorical logic as well as the Kripke and topological models of intuitionistic logic suggest that the interpretation of ordinary "propositional" logic should in general be the logic of subsets of a given universe set. Partitions on a set are dual to subsets of a set in the sense of the category-theoretic duality of epimorphisms and monomorphisms--which is reflected in the duality between quotient objects and subobjects throughout algebra. If "propositional" logic is thus seen as the logic of subsets of a universe set, then the question naturally arises of a dual logic of partitions on…
A systematic theory of structural limits for finite models has been developed by Nesetril and Ossona de Mendez. It is based on the insight that the collection of finite structures can be embedded, via a map they call the Stone pairing, in a space of measures, where the desired limits can be computed. We show that a closely related but finer grained space of measures arises --- via Stone-Priestley duality and the notion of types from model theory --- by enriching the expressive power of first-order logic with certain ``probabilistic operators''. We provide a sound and complete calculus for this…
Moisil logic, having as algebraic counterpart Łukasiewicz-Moisil algebras, provide an alternative way to reason about vague information based on the following principle: a many-valued event is characterized by a family of Boolean events. However, using the original definition of Łukasiewicz-Moisil algebra, the principle does not apply for subalgebras. In this paper we identify an alternative and equivalent definition for the $n$-valued Łukasiewicz-Moisil algebras, in which the determination principle is also saved for arbitrary subalgebras, which are characterized by a Boolean algebra and a fa…
