The scarce data systematics and complexity of deuteron interactions demand the update of both the experimental database and theoretical frame of deuteron activation cross sections. Various reactions induced by neutrons and protons following the deuteron breakup (BU) should be also taken into account. On the other hand, deuteron reaction cross sections recommended recently for high-priority elements are still based on data fit without predictive power. Purpose: Accurate new measurements of low-energy deuteron-induced reaction cross sections for monoisotopic (55Mn) natural manganese target enhance the related database as well as the opportunity of an unitary and consistent account of the related reaction mechanisms. Method: Activation cross sections of 54,56Mn, and 51Cr nuclei by deuterons on $^{55}$Mn were measured at energies <20 MeV by the stacked-foil technique and high resolution gamma spectrometry at the U-120M cyclotron of CANAM, NPI CAS. Then all available data for deuterons on 55Mn up to 50 MeV are analyzed paying particular attention to BU and direct reaction (DR) mechanisms. Results: Newly measured activation cross sections strengthen the deuteron database at low energies, at once with a consistent account for the first time of all available data. Conclusions: Due account of deuteron-induced reactions on 55Mn, including particularly the new experimental data at low energies, is provided by a suitable BU and DR assessment.
Background: Eclipse effect of the neutron and proton in a deuteron target is essential to correctly describe high-energy deuteron scattering. The nucleus-deuteron scattering needs information not only on the nucleus-proton but also the nucleus-neutron interaction, for which no direct measurement of the nucleus-neutron cross sections is available for unstable nuclei. Purpose: We systematically evaluated the total reaction cross sections by a deuteron target to explore the feasibility of extracting the nucleus-neutron interaction from measurable cross sections. Methods: High-energy nucleus-deute…
Theoretical models of the (d,p) reaction are exploited for both nuclear astrophysics and spectroscopic studies in nuclear physics. Usually, these reaction models use local optical model potentials to describe the nucleon- and deuteron-target interactions. Within such a framework the importance of the deuteron D-state in low-energy reactions is normally associated with spin observables and tensor polarization effects - with very minimal influence on differential cross sections. In contrast, recent work that includes the inherent nonlocality of the nucleon optical model potentials in the Johnson…
Photon-nuclear reaction in a transport model frame, namely an Extended Quantum Molecular Dynamics (EQMD) model, has been realised at the photon energy of 70-140 MeV in the quasi-deuteron (QD) regime. For an important application, we pay a special focus on photonuclear reactions of $^{12}$C($γ$,np)$^{10}$B where $^{12}$C is considered as different configurations including $α$-clustering. Obvious differences for some observables have been observed among different configurations, which can be attributed to spatial-momentum correlation of a neutron-proton pair inside nucleus, and therefore it give…
The activation cross sections of (d,p), (d,2n), (d,3n), and (d,2p) reactions on 63,65Cu were measured in the energy range from 4 to 20 MeV using the stacked-foils technique. Then, following the available elastic-scattering data analysis that provided the optical potential for reaction cross sections calculations, an increased effort has been devoted to the breakup mechanism, the direct reaction stripping, and the pre-equilibrium and compound-nucleus cross section calculations, corrected for the breakup and stripping decrease of the total reaction cross section. The overall agreement between th…
Purpose: Accurate new measurements of low-energy deuteron-induced reaction cross sections for natural Cr target can enhance the related database and the opportunity for an unitary and consistent account of the involved reaction mechanisms. Methods: The activation cross sections of $^{51,52,54}$Mn, $^{51}$Cr, and $^{48}$V nuclei for deuterons incident on natural Cr at energies up to 20 MeV, were measured by the stacked-foil technique and high resolution gamma spectrometry using U-120M cyclotron of the Center of Accelerators and Nuclear Analytical Methods (CANAM) of the Nuclear Physics Institute…
In the frame of a systematic study of the activation cross-sections of the proton induced nuclear reactions, excitation functions of the 55Mn(p,x)154,152gMn,51Cr and 48V were measured up to 70 MeV. Cross-sections were measured with the activation method using a stacked foil irradiation technique and high resolution gamma-ray spectrometry. The experimental data are analyzed and compared to the earlier results and to the prediction of the EMPIRE-3 as well as the TALYS theoretical model code in the TENDL-2012 library. From the measured cross-section data integral production yields were calculated…
We suggest a ``ping-pong'' mechanism of enhancement for fusion reactions between a low energy external deuteron beam and the deuterons in a condensed matter or molecular target. The mechanism is based on the possibility of acceleration of a target deuteron by the Coulomb field of a projectile deuteron with its subsequent rebound from a heavy atom in matter and the following fusion of the two deuterons moving towards each other. This effectively converts the fixed target process into a colliding beam reaction. In a simple limiting case this reduces the negative penetrability exponent by a facto…
An analysis of the $^{231}$Pa$(d,3n)$$^{230}$U reaction excitation function at energies around the Coulomb barrier has taken into account the pre-equilibrium and compound-nucleus cross sections corrected for the deuteron-breakup decrease of the total reaction cross section, as well as the inelastic breakup enhancement. The analysis reveals the dominance of the deuteron breakup mechanism unlike a former assessment in this respect of the deuteron-induced fission process.
The consequences for direct reactions of the dynamical non-locality generated by the excitation of the target and projectile are much less studied than the effects of non-locality arising from exchange processes. Here we are concerned with the dynamical non-locality due to projectile excitation in deuteron induced reactions. The consequences of this non-locality can be studied by the comparison of deuteron induced direct reactions calculated with alternative representations of the elastic channel wave functions: (i) the elastic channel wave functions from coupled channel (CC) calculations invo…
Activation cross-sections of deuterons induced reactions on Nb targets were determined with the aim of different applications and comparison with theoretical models.
The available data on the forward charge exchange of nucleons on the deuteron up to 2GeV per nucleon are reviewed. The value of the inclusive nd->pnn/np->pn cross section ratio is sensitive to the fraction of spin-independent neutron-proton backward scattering. The measurements of the polarisation transfer in d(\vec{n},\vec{p})nn or the deuteron analysing power in p(\vec{d},pp)n in high resolution experiments, where the final nn or pp pair emerge at low excitation energy, depend upon the longitudinal and transverse spin-spin np amplitudes. The relation between these types of experiments is dis…
Theoretical models of low-energy (d,p) single-neutron transfer reactions are a crucial link between experimentation, nuclear structure and nuclear astrophysical studies. Whereas reaction models that use local optical potentials are insensitive to short-range physics in the deuteron, we show that including the inherent nonlocality of the nucleon-target interactions and realistic deuteron wave functions generates significant sensitivity to high n-p relative momenta and to the underlying nucleon-nucleon interaction. We quantify this effect upon the deuteron channel distorting potentials within th…
In the given paper the total inelastic cross-sections of the reactions of protons and deuterons on nuclear targets of enriched tin isotopes were compared. The factorization of cross-sections of reactions was discussed. Furthermore, the comparison of theoretical estimations on total inelastic cross-sections with corresponding experimental ones was made.
The Continuum Discretized Coupled Channels (CDCC) method is a well established theory for direct nuclear reactions which includes breakup to all orders. Alternatively, the 3-body problem can be solved exactly within the Faddeev formalism which explicitly includes breakup and transfer channels to all orders. With the aim to understand how CDCC compares with the exact 3-body Faddeev formulation, we study deuteron induced reactions on: i) $^{10}$Be at $E_{\rm d}= 21.4, 40.9 \; {\rm and} \; 71$ MeV; ii) $^{12}$C at $E_{\rm d} = 12 \; {\rm and} \; 56$ MeV; and iii) $^{48}$Ca at $E_{\rm d} = 56$ MeV…

The effect of core excitations in transfer reactions of the form A(d, p)B has been found to affect significantly the calculated cross sections and to depend strongly and non-linearly on the incident deuteron energy in Faddeev/AGS calculations. Our goal is to investigate these effects within a coupled-channels formulation of the scattering problem which, in addition of being computationally less demanding than the Faddeev counterpart, may help shed some light into the physical interpretation of the cited effects. We use an extended version of the continuum-discretized coupled-channels (CDCC) me…
Model uncertainties, arising due to suppression of target excitations in the description of deuteron scattering and resulting in a modification of the two-body interactions in a three-body system, are investigated for several $(d,p)$ reactions serving as indirect tools for studying the astrophysical $(p,γ)$ reactions relevant to $rp$-process. The three-body nature of deuteron-target potential is treated within adiabatic distorted wave approximation (ADWA) which relies on dominant contribution from the components of the three-body deuteron-target wave function with small $n$-$p$ separations. Th…

A detailed comparison of the predictions with recent experimental data by the GDH and A2 collaborations at energies below 500 MeV is presented. Reasonable agreement with the data on the yields and cross sections for…

At present, targeted radiotherapy (TR) is acknowledged to have great potential in oncology. A large list of interesting radionuclides is identified, including several radioisotopes of lanthanides, amongst them $^{145}$Sm and $^{153}$Sm. In this work the possibility of their production at a cyclotron was investigated using a deuteron beam and a samarium target. The excitation functions of the $^{nat}$Sm(d,x)$^{145153}$Sm reactions were determined for deuteron energies up to 50 MeV using the stacked-foil technique and high-resolution $γ$-ray spectrometry. The measured cross sections and the cont…
Model dependence of the reaction rates for the weak breakup of deuterons by low energy neutrinos is studied starting from the cross sections derived from potential models and also from pionless effective field theory. Choosing the spread of the reaction yields, caused basically by the different ways the two-body currents are treated, as a measure of the model dependent uncertainty, we conclude that the breakup reactions are $\sim$ 2 - 3 % uncertain, and that even the ratio of the charged to neutral current reaction rates is also $\sim$ 2 % uncertain.
Investigations of cross-sections of deuteron induced nuclear reactions on gold were extended up to 50 MeV by using the standard stacked foil irradiation technique and high resolution gamma-ray spectrometry. The application for production of the medically relevant isotopes $^{198}$Au and $^{195m,195g,197m,197g}$Hg is discussed, including the comparison with other charged particle induced production routes. The possible use of the $…
We propose to measure the rate \Rd\ for muon capture on the deuteron to better than 1.5% precision. This process is the simplest weak interaction process on a nucleus that can both be calculated and measured to a high degree of precision. The measurement will provide a benchmark result, far more precise than any current experimental information on weak interaction processes in the two-nucleon system. Moreover, it can impact our understanding of fundamental reactions of astrophysical interest, like solar pp fusion and the $ν+d$ reactions observed by the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory. Recent effe…

The independent cross section ratio for production of nuclei from 197Au targets irradiated with 4 GeV deuterons have been measured by off-line gamma-spectroscopy. On the basis of the measured independent cross section ratio of 198m, gAu the average intrinsic angular momentum of the primary nucleus was estimated by means of a simple statistical-model analysis based on the formalism developed by Huizenga and Vandenbosch.
The eta-mesic nuclei in which the eta meson is bound with nucleus via strong interaction was postulated already in 1986, however till now no experiment confirmed empirically its existence. The discovery of this new kind of an exotic nuclear matter would be very important for better understanding of the eta meson structure and its interaction with nucleons. The search for eta-mesic helium is carried out with high statistic and high acceptance with the WASA-at-COSY detection setup in the Forschungszentrum Julich. The search is conducted via the measurement of the excitation function for the chos…
The possibility of using a tensor polarized deuteron target in electroproduction reactions creates new opportunities for studying different phenomena related to the short-range hadronic and nuclear physics. The use of tensor polarized deuteron allows to isolate smaller than average inter-nucleon distances for the bound two-nucleon system. In this report we consider several of high $Q^2$ reactions which are particularly sensitive to the short-range two-nucleon configurations in the deuteron. The one is the relativistic dynamics of electron-bound-nucleon scattering which can be studied in both i…
Orientation effect of increasing the enhancement factor of DD reaction in CVD-Diamond was investigated by simulation. It is obtained that the flux peaking effect up to 2.2 times increases the relative enhancement factor for a parallel beam and up to 1.2 times for the deuteron beam with angular divergence equals 3 critical channeling angles. Qualitative agreement with the experiment was obtained.
The recoil properties of fragments produced by the interaction of 4.4 GeV deuteron with 197Au target have been studied. New experimental data on recoil properties for 90 nuclei, varying from 24Na to 198Au, were obtained. The technique applied was the {thick-target thick-catcher} and induced activity method. The deuteron beam was obtained from the Nuclotron of the Laboratory of High Energies (LHE), Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR), Dubna. The experimental data were analyzed on the basis of the standard two-step vector model formalism. From this analysis we could find evidence to supp…
Vector and tensor analysing powers of the d(pol)p->(pp)n (charge-exchange) and d(pol)p->(pn)p (non-charge-exchange) breakup reactions have been measured with the ANKE spectrometer at the COSY ring at a deuteron beam energy of 1170 MeV for small momentum transfers to the low excitation energy (pp) or (pn) systems. A quantitative understanding of the values of A_xx and A_yy for the charge-exchange reaction is provided by impulse approximation calculations. The data suggest that spin-flip isospin-flip transitions, which dominate the charge-exchange breakup of the deuteron, are also important in t…
Nucleon transfer reactions in low-energy deuteron-deuteron scattering are described by solving exact four-particle equations in momentum space. The Coulomb interaction between the protons is included using the screening and renormalization method. Various realistic potentials are used between nucleon pairs. The energy dependence of the differential cross section, analyzing powers, polarizations, spin-transfer coefficient, and the quintet suppression factor is studied.

The study of two body deuteron photo-disintegration is ideal for investigating the transition region from meson exchange to the Quantum Chromo Dynamics (QCD) regime because of its simplicity and amenability to calculation. In the past years, the theoretical efforts have been focused in two different directions: extending at higher energies the models based on meson exchange, and improving the models inspired by QCD principles to extrapolate their predictions at lower energies, in order to find out the approach that best describes the experimental data and in which energy region the transition …
The differential cross section and target asymmetry components of the reaction D(e,pp)e'pi- on polarized deuteron were measured. The kinetic energies of the protons were measured within 55-180 MeV and 46-265 MeV. The polar acceptance angles in laboratory frame for the both protons are (64 - 82) degrees and the azimuthal angles are (-16 +16), (164 - 196) degrees. The sharp peak of the tensor a(20)-component of the target asymmetry is found near the invariant mass of the pppi-system M(pppi) = 2300 MeV/c**2. The performed calculations of the differential yield and the tensor target asymmetry do n…

The experimental data are compared with results of the model calculations performed with the ALICE D, EMPIRE D theoretical nucl…
Double differential cross sections have been measured for pi+ and K+ emitted around midraidity in d+A and He+A collisions at a beam kinetic energy of 1.15 GeV/nucleon. The total pi+ yield increases by a factor of about 2 when using an alpha projectile instead of a deuteron whereas the K+ yield increases by a factor of about 4. According to transport calculations, the K+ enhancement depends both on the number of hadron-hadron collisions and on the energy available in those collisions: their center-of-mass energy increases with increasing number of projectile nucleons.
We discuss how to reduce theoretical uncertainties in the neutrino-deuteron breakup cross-sections crucial to the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory's efforts to measure the solar neutrino flux. In effective field theory, the dominant uncertainties in all neutrino-deuteron reactions can be expressed through a single, common, isovector axial two-body current parameterized by $L_{1,A}$. After briefly reviewing the status of fixing $L_{1,A}$ experimentally, we present a constraint on $L_{1,A}$ imposed by existing reactor antineutrino-deuteron breakup data. This constraint alone leads to an uncertainty …
We study vector meson photoproduction from the deuteron at high momentum transfer, accompanied by break-up of the deuteron into a proton and neutron. The large $-t$ involved allows one of the nucleons to be identified as struck, and the other as a spectator to the $γN\rightarrow VN$ subprocess. Corrections to the plane wave impulse approximation involve final state interactions (FSIs) between the struck nucleon or the vector meson, either of which is energetic, with the slow spectator nucleon. In this regime, the eikonal approximation is valid, so is employed to calculate the cross-section for…
We analyze the momentum distributions of constituents in 3He, as well as the spin-dependent observables for (3He,d), (3He,p), and (d,p) breakup reactions. Special attention is paid to the region of small relative momenta of the helium-3 and the deuteron constituents, where a single parameter, D_2, has determining role for the spin-dependent observables. We extract also this parameter for the deuteron, basing on existing data for the tensor analyzing power of this reaction.

Comparison with the former results of other laboratories and with the predictions of the ALICE-IPPE and EMPIRE-3 model codes, modified for improved calculations for deuteron reactions, and with data in the TENDL-2011 library are also presented. Thick…
The radionuclide 161Tb (T1/2=6.89 d) is potentially important for internal radiotherapy. It is generally produced through the 160Gd(n,γ)161Gd - 161Tb route at research reactors. In this work the possibility of its production at a cyclotron was investigated. Determination of the excitation function of the 160Gd(d,x)161Tb production route and that of the disturbing 160Gd(d,2n)160Tb side reaction was done over the deuteron energy range up to 50 MeV using the stacked-foil technique and high-resolution gamma-ray spectrometry. A comparison of this production route with the established (n,γ) reaction…

The traditional stacked foil irradiation technique and non-destructive gamma spectrometry were used. No experimental data were found in literature for this higher energy range. Experimental cross-sections for the formation of the radionuclides $^{113,110}$Sn, $^{116m,115m,114m,113m,111,110g,109}$In and $^{115}$Cd are reported in the 37-50 MeV energy range, for production of $^{110}$Sn and $^{110g,109}$In these a…
The paper discusses the features of the behavior of pion production cross section as a function of the atomic mass of the target nucleus for the reaction of fragmentation of the incident deuterons in the pions produced in the so-called "twice-cumulative" kinematic region. A distinctive feature of the twice-cumulative pions is that for their production the target nucleus must be heavier than hydrogen. The simulation results show that the dependence of the cross sections for pion production in the twice-cumulative region differs from the analogous dependence for the cumulative region. The paper …
