Black hole and neutron star X-ray binary systems routinely show quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) in their X-ray flux. Despite being strong, easily measurable signals, their physical origin has long remained elusive. However, recent observational and theoretical work has greatly improved our understanding. Here, we briefly review the basic phenomenology of the different varieties of QPO in both black hole and neutron star systems before focusing mainly on low frequency QPOs in black hole systems, for which much of the recent progress has been made. We describe the detailed statistical properties of these QPOs and review the physical models proposed in the literature, with particular attention to those based on Lense-Thirring precession. This is a relativistic effect whereby a spinning massive object twists up the surrounding spacetime, inducing nodal precession in inclined orbits. We review the theory describing how an accretion flow reacts to the Lense-Thirring effect, including analytic theory and recent numerical simulations. We then describe recent observational tests that provide very strong evidence that at least a certain type of low frequency QPOs are a geometric effect, and good evidence that they are the result of precession. We discuss the possibility of the spin axis of the compact object being misaligned with the binary rotation axis for a large fraction of X-ray binaries, as is required for QPOs to be driven specifically by Lense-Thirring precession, as well as some outstanding gaps in our understanding and future opportunities provided by X-ray polarimeters and/or high throughput X-ray detectors.
A model of low-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (LFQPOs) of black hole X-ray binaries (BHXBs) is proposed based on the perturbed magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations of accretion disk. It turns out that the LFQPOs frequencies of some BHXBs can be fitted by the frequencies of the toroidal Alfvén wave oscillation corresponding to the maximal radiation flux. In addition, the positive correlation of the LFQPO frequencies with the radiation flux from accretion disk is well interpreted.
We investigate the kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations of low-mass X-ray binaries within the Hartle-Thorne spacetime. On the basis the relativistic precession model we extract the total mass $M$, angular momentum $J$, and quadrupole moment $Q$ of a compact object in a low-mass X-ray binary by analyzing the data of the Z -source GX 5-1. In view of the recent neutron star model we compute the radius, angular velocity and other parameters of this source by imposing the observational and theoretical constraints on the mass-radius relation.
We suggest a possible explanation for the high frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) in black hole low mass X-ray binaries. By solving the perturbation general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic equations, we find two stable modes of the Alfven wave in the the accretion disks with toroidal magnetic fields. We suggest that these two modes may lead to the double high frequency QPOs if they are produced in the transition region between the inner advection dominated accretion flow and the outer thin disk. This model naturally accounts for the 3 : 2 relation for the upper and lower frequencies…
Stellar companion of a black hole orbiting in an eccentric orbit will experience modulating tidal force with a periodicity same as that of the orbital period. This, in turn, would modulate accretion rates, and the seed photon flux which are inverse Comptonized to produce harder X-rays. By analyzing complete all sky monitor (ASM) data (1.5-12 keV) of RXTE and all sky survey data (15-50 keV) of Swift/BAT we discover this periodicity in several objects. We also estimate eccentricities from the RMS power of the peak around quasi-orbital periods (QOP). Our method provides an independent way to obta…
Gamma-ray binaries allow us to study physical processes such as particle acceleration up to very-high energies and gamma-ray emission and absorption with changing geometrical configurations on a periodic basis. They produce outflows of radio-emitting particles whose structure can be imaged with Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI). We present recent and new VLBI observations of PSR B1259-63, LS 5039, LS I +61 303, and HESS J0632+057. For the first three cases the results show the repeatability of their radio structures with the orbit of the binary system.
Gamma-ray binaries allow us to study physical processes such as particle acceleration up to very-high energies and gamma-ray emission and absorption with changing geometrical configurations on a periodic basis. These sources produce outflows of radio-emitting particles whose structure can be imaged with Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI). We have studied the changing morphology of the gamma-ray binaries LS I +61 303 and LS 5039, and we have discovered the extended emission of PSR B1259-63 and HESS J0632+057. Based on these results, we have established the basic properties and behaviour o…
Twin kilo-Hertz Quasi-periodic oscillation with ratio 3/2 has been found in some compact sources, which is believed to be related with their innermost regions of accretion disks, and hence carrying information of gravity in strong regime. However, more complicated phenomena have been revealed, e.g., the twin kilo-Hertz Quasi-periodic oscillation of 4U 1820-20 start increasing at certain spectral state and then saturate upon reaching certain level. Moreover, such quasi-periodic oscillation is not uniform and has multiple peaks, which displays random feature. This letter suggests that these chal…
High frequency quasiperiodic oscillations (HF QPOs) detected in the power spectra of low mass x-ray binaries (LMXBs) could unveil the fingerprints of gravitation in strong field regime. Using the energy-momentum relation we calculate the energy a clump of plasma orbiting in the accretion disk releases during circularization of its slightly eccentric relativistic orbit. Following previous works, we highlight the strong tidal force as mechanism to dissipate such energy. We show that tides acting on the clump are able to reproduce the observed coherence of the upper HF QPO seen in LMXBs with a ne…
Giant outbursts of Be/X-ray binaries may occur when a Be-star disc undergoes strong eccentricity growth due to the Kozai-Lidov (KL) mechanism. The KL effect acts on a disc that is highly inclined to the binary orbital plane provided that the disc aspect ratio is sufficiently small. The eccentric disc overflows its Roche lobe and material flows from the Be star disc over to the companion neutron star causing X-ray activity. With N-body simulations and steady state decretion disc models we explore system parameters for which a disc in the Be/X-ray binary 4U 0115+634 is KL unstable and the result…
Fast time variability is the most prominent characteristic of accreting systems and the presence of quasi periodic oscillations (QPOs) is a constant in all accreting systems, from cataclysmic variables to AGNs, passing through black hole and neutron star X-ray binaries and through the enigmatic ultra-luminous X-ray sources. In this paper I will briefly review the current knowledge of QPOs in black hole X-ray binaries, mainly focussing on their observed properties, but also mentioning the most important models that have been proposed to explain the origin of QPOs over the last decades.
We present the results of the analysis of a large database of X-ray observations of 22 galactic black-hole transients with the Rossi X-Ray timing explorer throughout its operative life for a total exposure time of ~12 Ms. We excluded persistent systems and the peculiar source GRS 1915+105, as well as the most recently discovered sources. The semi-automatic homogeneous analysis was aimed at the detection of high-frequency (100-1000 Hz) quasi-periodic oscillations (QPO), of which several cases were previously reported in the literature. After taking into account the number of independent trials,…
While nobody would deny the presence of Quasi-Periodic Oscillations in the power density spectrum of Black hole binaries nor their importance in the understanding of the mechanisms powering the X-ray emissions, the possible impact on the time-averaged disk energy spectrum from the phenomenon responsible for the Quasi-Periodic Oscillations is largely ignored in models of sources emission. Here we investigate the potential impact of such structure on the resultant energy spectrum. Using data from the well documented outbursts of XTE J$1550$-$564$ we looked at possible hints that the presence of …
We present a systematic analysis of the effects of orbital inclination angle on the non-linear variability properties of type-B and type-C QPOs from black hole binaries. We use the bicoherence, a measure of phase coupling at different Fourier frequencies for our analysis. We find that there is a likely inclination dependent change in the non-linear properties of type-C QPOs as the source transitions from a hard intermediate state to a soft intermediate state. High inclination (edge-on) sources show a change from a `web' to a `cross' pattern, while the low inclination (face-on) sources show a c…
We recalculate the modes of the magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) waves in the MHD model (Shi, Zhang & Li 2014) of the kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations (kHz QPOs) in neutron star low mass X-ray binaries (NS-LMXBs), in which the compressed magnetosphere is considered. A method on pointby- point scanning for every parameter of a normal LMXBs is proposed to determine the wave number in a NS-LMXB. The dependence of the twin kHz QPO frequencies on accretion rates ( DOt(M) ) is obtained with the wave number and magnetic field (B?) determined by our method. Based on the MHD model, a new explanation of …
We study the energy-dependent time lags and rms fractional amplitude of the kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations (kHz QPOs) of a group of neutron-star low mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs). We find that for the lower kHz QPO the slope of the best-fitting linear model to the time-lag spectrum and the total rms amplitude integrated over the 2 to 25 keV energy band both decrease exponentially with the luminosity of the source. For the upper kHz QPO the slope of the time-lag spectrum is consistent with zero, while the total rms amplitude decreases exponentially with the luminosity of the source. We sho…
We study the kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations (kHz QPOs) in neutron star low mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) with a new magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) model, in which the compressed magnetosphere is considered. The previous MHD model (Shi \& Li 2009) is re-examined and the relation between the frequencies of the kHz QPOs and the accretion rate in LMXBs is obtained. Our result agrees with the observations of six sources (4U 0614+09, 4U 1636--53, 4U 1608--52, 4U 1915--15, 4U 1728--34, XTE 1807--294) with measured spins. In this model the kHz QPOs originate from the MHD waves in the compressed magne…
We present the results of our extensive binary orbital motion corrected pulsation search for 13 low mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs). These selected sources exhibit burst oscillations in X-rays with frequencies ranging from 45 to 1122 Hz, and have a binary orbital period varying from 2.1 to 18.9 hours. We first determined episodes that contain weak pulsations around the burst oscillation frequency by searching all archival Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) data of these sources. Then, we applied Doppler corrections to these pulsation episodes to discard the smearing effect of the binary orbital mo…
We report the discovery using data from the Swift Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) of superorbital modulation in the wind-accretion supergiant high-mass X-ray binaries 4U 1909+07 (= X 1908+075), IGR J16418-4532, and IGR J16479-4514. Together with already known superorbital periodicities in 2S 0114+650 and IGR J16493-4348, the systems exhibit a monotonic relationship between superorbital and orbital periods. These systems include both supergiant fast X-ray transients (SFXTs) and classical supergiant systems, and have a range of inclination angles. This suggests an underlying physical mechanism which…
Neutron stars are the densest objects known in the Universe. Being the final product of stellar evolution, their internal composition and structure is rather poorly constrained by measurements. It is the purpose of this paper to put some constrains on the mass and moment of inertia of neutron stars based on the interpretation of kHz quasi-periodic oscillations observed in low mass X-ray binaries. We use observations of high-frequency quasi-periodic observations (HF-QPOs) in low mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) to look for the average mass and moment of inertia of neutron stars. This is done by appl…
We propose a new model of the steep power law state of luminous black hole X-ray binaries. The model uses the fact that at high luminosities, the inner radii of radiation pressure dominated accretion discs are expected to i) become effectively optically thin and ii) produce significant luminosities. The gas temperature therefore rises sharply inwards, producing local saturated Compton spectra with rapidly increasing peak energy. These spectra sum together to form a steep power law tail to the spectrum. A given photon energy on this tail corresponds to a narrow range in radius, so that local ve…
Theory predicts that a supermassive black hole binary (SMBHB) could be observed as a luminous active galactic nucleus (AGN) that periodically varies on the order of its orbital timescale. In X-rays, periodic variations could be caused by mechanisms including relativistic Doppler boosting and shocks. Here we present the first systematic search for periodic AGNs using $941$ hard X-ray light curves (14-195 keV) from the first 105 months of the Swift Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) survey (2004-2013). We do not find evidence for periodic AGNs in Swift-BAT, including the previously reported SMBHB candi…
A possible origin of kHz QPOs in low-mass X-ray binaries is proposed. Recent numerical MHD simulations of accretion disks with turbulent magnetic fields of MRI definitely show the presence of two-armed spiral structure in quasi-steady state of accretion disks. In such deformed disks, two-armed ($m=2$) c-mode ($n=1$) oscillations are excited by wave-wave resonant instability. Among these excited oscillations, the fundamental in the radial direction ($n_r=0$) will be the higher kHz QPO of a twin QPOs, and the first overtone ($n_r=1$) in the radial direction will be the lower kHz QPO of the twin.…
We present a comprehensive study of the periodic variations observed in OGLE I-band light curves of SMC Be/X-ray binaries, discovering new optical periodicities in 9 systems. We find that these periodicities derive from a number of mechanisms, notably disturbance of the decretion disk on the orbital period of the system, and aliased non-radial pulsations. We develop metrics that allow these mechanisms to be distinguished on the basis of the shape of the folded optical light curve, and use these metrics to categorise the periodicities present in \sim 50 SMC binary systems. We conclude that extr…
We compile observations of high-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) around black holes, both stellar and supermassive, and compare their positions in the parameter space of black hole mass, spin, and oscillation frequency. We find that supermassive black holes occupy a separate region of parameter space than stellar, and further, that QPOs seen around tidal disruption events rather than Seyfert-type AGN occupy an entirely different space. We then compare these results to the orbital resonance, diskoseismic, warped disk, and disk-jet coupling theoretical models for the origin of high-f…
We study the dependence of kHz quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) frequency on accretion-related parameters in the ensemble of neutron star low-mass X-ray binaries. Based on the mass accretion rate, $\dot{M}$, and the magnetic field strength, $B$, on the surface of the neutron star, we find a correlation between the lower kHz QPO frequency and $\dot{M}/B^{2}$. The correlation holds in the current ensemble of Z and atoll sources and therefore can explain the lack of correlation between the kHz QPO frequency and X-ray luminosity in the same ensemble. The average run of lower kHz QPO frequencies th…
We analysed the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) data from a sample of bright accreting neutron star (NS) low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs). With the aim of studying the quasi-periodic variability as a function of the accretion regime, we carried out a systematic search of the quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) in the X-ray time series of these systems, using the integrated fractional variability as a tracker for the accretion states. We found that the three QPO types originally identified in the '80s for the brightest LMXBs, the so-called Z-sources, i.e., horizontal, normal and flaring branch…
There have been many efforts to explain the dynamical mechanisms behind the phenomenology of quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) seen in the X-ray light curves of low-mass X-ray binaries. Up to now, none of the models can successfully explain all the frequencies observed in the power density spectrum of the light curve. Here we perform several hydrodynamic simulations of non-self-gravitating relativistic axisymmetric thick tori applied to the neutron star in the low-mass X-ray binary 4U 1636-53 and show how the observed oscillation modes triggered by different velocity perturbations give rise t…
A number of black hole X-ray transients show quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) in the optical (ultraviolet) and X-ray bands at the same frequency, which challenge models for production of radiation at these wavelengths. We propose a model where the optical radiation is modulated by the oscillating X-ray flux resulting in varying irradiation of the outer parts of the accretion disc. The proposed QPO mechanism inevitably takes place in the systems with sufficiently small ratio of the outer disc radius to the QPO period. We show that, unlike in the case of the aperiodic variability, it is not po…
We study the Rossby wave instability model of high-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (QPO) of microquasars. We show ray-traced light curves of QPO within this model and discuss perspectives of distinguishing alternative QPO models with the future Large Observatory For X-ray Timing (LOFT) observations.
We report on a detailed analysis of the so-called ~1 Hz quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) in the eclipsing and dipping neutron-star low-mass X-ray binary EXO 0748-676. This type of QPO has previously been shown to have a geometric origin. Our study focuses on the evolution of the QPO as the source moves through the color-color diagram, in which it traces out an atoll-source-like track. The QPO frequency increases from ~0.4 Hz in the hard state to ~25 Hz as the source approaches the soft state. Combining power spectra based on QPO frequency reveals additional features that strongly resemble thos…
We performed a global study on the timing and spectral properties of type-B quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) in the outbursts of black hole X-ray binaries. The sample is built based on the observations of {\it Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer}, via searching in the literature in RXTE era for all the identified type-B QPOs. To enlarge the sample, we also investigated some type-B QPOs that are reported but not yet fully identified. Regarding to the time lag and hard/soft flux ratio, we found that the sources with type-B QPOs behave in two subgroups. In one subgroup, type-B QPO shows a hard time lag…
We study the tidal excitation of gravity modes (g-modes) in compact white dwarf binary systems with periods ranging from minutes to hours. As the orbit of the system decays via gravitational radiation, the orbital frequency increases and sweeps through a series of resonances with the g-modes of the white dwarf. At each resonance, the tidal force excites the g-mode to a relatively large amplitude, transferring the orbital energy to the stellar oscillation. We calculate the eigenfrequencies of g-modes and their coupling coefficients with the tidal field for realistic non-rotating white dwarf mod…
We revisit the eccentric neutron star (NS)-white dwarf (WD) binary model for the periodic activity of fast radio burst (FRB) sources, by including the effects of gravitational wave (GW) radiation. In this model, the WD fills its Roche lobe at the periastron and mass transfer occurs from the WD to the NS. The accreted materials can be fragmented and arrive at the NS episodically, resulting in multiple bursts through curvature radiation. Consequently, the WD may be kicked away owing to the conservation of angular momentum. To initiate the next mass transfer, the WD has to refill its Roche lobe t…
We analyze all available RXTE data on a sample of 13 low mass X-ray binaries with known neutron star spin that are not persistent pulsars. We carefully measure the correlations between the centroid frequencies of the quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs). We compare these correlations to the prediction of the relativistic precession model (RPM) that, due to frame dragging, a QPO will occur at the Lense-Thirring precession frequency $ν_{LT}$ of a test particle orbit whose orbital frequency is the upper kHz QPO frequency $ν_u$. Contrary to the most prominent previous studies, we find two different …
The X-ray emission from accreting black-holes and neutron stars features strong variability on sub-second time scales, with very complex and broad phenomenology. From high-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations to rapidly changing X-ray burst oscillations to millisecond pulsations, these are weak signals immersed in strong noise and their study is pushing instrument capabilities to their limit. The scientific significance of fast time variability studies are both astronomical (properties of accretion flows, nature and evolution of sources) and physical (effects of General Relativity, equation o…
Low mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) show strong variability over a broad range of time scales. The analysis of this variability, in particular of the quasi-periodic oscillations (QPO), is key to understanding the properties of the innermost regions of the accretion flow in these systems. We present a time-dependent Comptonisation model that fits the energy-dependent rms-amplitude and phase-lag spectra of low-frequency QPOs in black-hole (BH) LMXBs. We model the accretion disc as a multi-temperature blackbody source emitting soft photons which are then Compton up-scattered in a spherical corona, in…

Context. One of the often discussed models for X-ray binaries high-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations is the oscillating torus model that considers oscillation modes of slender accretion tori. Aims. Here, we aim at developing this model by considering the observable signature of an optically thick slender accretion torus subject to simple periodic deformations. Methods. We compute light curves and power spectra of a slender accretion torus subject to simple periodic deformations: vertical or radial translation, rotation, expansion and shear. Results. We show that different types of deformat…
We present a detailed study of the X-ray energy and power spectral properties of the neutron star transient IGR J17191-2821. We discovered four instances of pairs of simultaneous kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations (kHz QPOs). The frequency difference between these kHz QPOs is between 315 Hz and 362 Hz. We also report on the detection of five thermonuclear type-I X-ray bursts and the discovery of burst oscillations at ~294 Hz during three of them. Finally, we report on a faint and short outburst precursor, which occurred about two months before the main outburst. Our results on the broadband…
The tidal force from a third body near a binary system could introduce long-term oscillations in the binary's eccentricity, known as Kozai-Lidov oscillations. We show that the Kozai-Lidov oscillations of stellar-mass black hole binaries have the potential to be observed by LISA. Detections of such binaries will give insights into binary formation channels and also provide an important benchmark of observing Kozai-Lidov oscillations directly.
We present evidence for a simple linear relationship between the orbital period and super-orbital period in ultra-luminous X-ray (ULX) pulsars, akin to what is seen in the population of disc-fed neutron star super-giant X-ray binary and Be/X-ray binary systems. We argue that the most likely cause of this relationship is the modulation of precessing hot spots or density waves in an accretion or circumstellar disc by the binary motion of the system, implying a physical link between ULX pulsars and high-mass X-ray binary (HMXB) pulsars. This hypothesis is supported by recent studies of Galactic a…
Discovery of the 6.7-hour periodicity in the X-ray source 1E 161348-5055 in RCW 103 has led to investigations of the nature of this periodicity. We explore a model for 1E 161348-5055, wherein a fast-spinning neutron star with a magnetic field $\sim 10^{12}$ G in a young pre-Low-Mass X-ray Binary (pre-LMXB) with an eccentric orbit of period 6.7 hr operates in the "propeller" phase. The 6.7-hr light curve of 1E 161348-5055 can be quantitatively accounted by a model of orbitally-modulated mass transfer through a viscous accretion disk and subsequent propeller emission (both Illarionov-Sunyaev typ…
Recent observations of accreting black holes reveal the presence of quasi-periodic oscillations (QPO) in the optical power density spectra. The corresponding oscillation periods match those found in the X-rays, implying a common origin. Among the numerous suggested X-ray QPO mechanisms, some may also work in the optical. However, their relevance to the broadband -- optical through X-ray -- spectral properties have not been investigated. For the first time, we discuss the QPO mechanism in the context of the self-consistent spectral model. We propose that the QPOs are produced by Lense-Thirring …
Stellar-mass black hole binaries (BHBs) near supermassive black holes (SMBH) in galactic nuclei undergo eccentricity oscillations due to gravitational perturbations from the SMBH. Previous works have shown that this channel can contribute to the overall BHB merger rate detected by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) and Virgo Interferometer. Significantly, the SMBH gravitational perturbations on the binary's orbit may produce eccentric BHBs which are expected to be visible using the upcoming Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) for a large fraction of their life…
The barycenter of a massive black hole binary will lie outside the event horizon of the primary black hole for modest values of mass ratio and binary separation. Analagous to radial velocity shifts in stellar emission lines caused by the tug of planets, the radial velocity of the primary black hole around the barycenter can leave a tell-tale oscillation in the broad component of Fe K$α$ emission from accreting gas. Near-future X-ray telescopes such as Astro-H and Athena will have the energy resolution ($δE/E \lesssim 10^{-3}$) to search nearby active galactic nuclei (AGN) for the presence of b…
We perform magnetohydrodynamic simulations of accreting, equal-mass binary black holes in full general relativity focusing on the effect of spin and minidisks on the accretion rate and Poynting luminosity variability. We report on the structure of the minidisks and periodicities in the mass of the minidisks, mass accretion rates, and Poynting luminosity. The accretion rate exhibits a quasi-periodic behavior related to the orbital frequency of the binary in all systems that we study, but the amplitude of this modulation is dependent on the existence of persistent minidisks. In particular, syste…
I present recent results studying flare emission in magnetars. Strong quasi-periodic oscillations observed in the tail of giant magnetar flares are frequently interpreted as evidence for global seismic oscillations. I demonstrate that such a global oscillation is not directly observable in the lightcurve. New work suggests the amplitude for the strongest QPO stays nearly constant in the rotation phases where it is observed, which I argue suggests it is produced by an additional emission process from the star.
There are only a few sources that are definitely known to be gamma-ray binaries. Two of these are listed as associations in the Fermi LAT Bright Source List. We are developing novel techniques to extract high signal-to-noise light curves of all cataloged Fermi sources and to search for periodic variability using appropriately weighted power spectra. The detection of periodic variability would be strong evidence for the detection of a new gamma-ray binary. The LAT's sensitivity provides the opportunity to open up completely new discovery space for additional binary systems, potentially involvin…

The optical and UV emission from sub-parsec massive black hole binaries (MBHBs) in active galactic nuclei (AGN) is believed to vary periodically, on timescales comparable to the binary's orbital time. If driven by accretion rate fluctuations, the variability could be isotropic. If dominated by relativistic Doppler modulation, the variability should instead be anisotropic, resembling a rotating forward-beamed lighthouse. We consider the infrared (IR) reverberation of either type of periodic emission by pc-scale circumbinary dust tori. We predict the phase and amplitude of IR variability as a fu…
Almost all accreting black hole and neutron star X-ray binary systems (XRBs) exhibit prominent brightness variations on a few characteristic time-scales and their harmonics. These quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) are thought to be associated with the precession of a warped accretion disc, but the physical mechanism that generates the precessing warp remains uncertain. Relativistic frame dragging (Lense-Thirring precession) is one promising candidate, but a misaligned magnetic field is an alternative, especially for neutron star XRBs. Here, we report the discovery of 5 accreting white dwarf s…
We study the excitation of nonaxisymmetric modes in the post-merger phase of binary compact object mergers and the associated gravitational wave emission. Our analysis is based on general-relativistic simulations, in the spatial conformal flatness approximation, using smoothed-particle-hydrodynamics for the evolution of matter, and we use a set of equal and unequal mass models, described by two nonzero-temperature hadronic equations of state and by one strange star equation of state. Through Fourier transforms of the evolution of matter variables, we can identify a number of oscillation modes,…
We withdraw our claim that a component in an XMM-Newton satellite light curve of the BL Lacertae object S5 0716 + 714 shows quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) of $\sim$30 minutes. Although both our original periodogram and wavelet analyses gave consistent results, the data do not lead to a statistically significant result once red-noise at low frequencies is properly taken into account for periodogram analyses.
