The angular momentum of evanescent light fields has been studied in nano-optics and plasmonics, but not in the microwave regime. Here we predict non-contact pumping of electron spin currents in conductors by the evanescent stray fields of excited magnetic nanostructures. The coherent transfer of the photon to the electron spin is proportional to the $g$-factor, which is large in narrow-gap semiconductors and surface states of topological insulators. The spin pumping current is chiral when the spin susceptibility displays singularities that indicate collective states. However, 1D systems with linear dispersion at the Fermi energy such as metallic carbon nanotubes are an exception since spin pumping is chiral even without interactions.
We show that graphene-based quantum pumps can tap into evanescent modes, which penetrate deeply into the device as a consequence of Klein tunneling. The evanescent modes dominate pumping at the Dirac point, and give rise to a universal response under weak driving for short and wide pumps, in close analogy to their role for the minimal conductivity in ballistic transport. In contrast, evanescent modes contribute negligibly to normal pumps. Our findings add a new incentive for the exploration of graphene-based nanoelectronic devices.
We develop a concept of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) based four-wave mixing (4WM), in which a laser-launched evanescent SPP field is utilized as a coherent pumping source to involve directly in a nonlinear 4WM process at the dielectric/metal interface. Conversion efficiency of the resulting 4WM radiation is expected to be dramatically increased due to the local-field enhancement effect. Feasibility of implementing this concept at the air/gold film and graphene flake/gold film interfaces is further examined by numerical simulations. The concept shows intriguing promise for applications in …
A two dimensional electron system without spatial inversion symmetry develops a sample specific dc voltage when exposed to a microwave radiation at low temperature. We investigate this photovoltaic (PV) effect, in the case where spatial symmetry is broken by an evanescent high-frequency potential. We measure the induced PV voltage in a ${\rm GaAs/Ga_{1-x}Al_{x}As}$ Hall bar at magnetic fields in the Tesla range. We find that in this regime the induced PV voltage is anti-symmetric with magnetic field, and exhibits regular Shubnikov-de Haas like oscillations. Our experimental results can be unde…
We investigate non-adiabatic electron pumping in graphene generated by laser irradiation with linear polarization parallel or perpendicular to the transport direction. Transport is dominated by the spatially asymmetric excitation of electrons from evanescent into propagating modes. For a laser with parallel polarization, the pumping response exhibits a subharmonic resonant enhancement which directly probes the Fermi energy; no such enhancement occurs for perpendicular polarization. The resonance mechanism relies on the chirality of charge carriers in graphene.
We contend that Microwave Spin Pumping was first predicted and observed - albeit using a different and more sensitive detection mechanism than Inverse Spin Hall Effect - in the 1950's. This discovery was the founding step in the widely used analytical tool that is now known as Dynamic Nuclear Polarisation. Recognising this hitherto unsung connection between 20th Century Magnetic Resonance and 21st Century Spintronics not only helps to explain and unify contemporary metallic spin pumping observations: it is also the key to unlocking the immense and very sophisticated toolbox of Magnetic Resonan…
Non-equilibrium two-parameter pumping transport through graphene ribbons, attached to reservoirs is described. A tight-binding model is solved using Keldysh formalism, and the crossover between adiabatic and non-adiabatic regimes is studied. Pumped dc currents through armchair ribbons show properties common in two-dimensional systems. The width-dependent dc current in zigzag ribbons, reveals that edge states akin to those in two-dimensional topological insulators, do not contribute to pumped transport in the adiabatic regime. The interplay between propagating and evanescent modes is discussed.
Based on the Floquet scattering theory, we analytically investigate the topological spin pumping for an exactly solvable model. Floquet spin Chern numbers are introduced to characterize the periodically time-dependent system. The topological spin pumping remains robust both in the presence and in the absence of the time-reversal symmetry, as long as the pumping frequency is smaller than the band gap, where the electron transport involves only the Floquet evanescent modes in the pump. For the pumping frequency greater than the band gap, where the propagating modes in the pump participate in the…
A dynamical cross-over regime is revealed when exposing a classical two-dimensional ordered Josephson junction (JJ) array to evanescent waves and tuning the incident microwave power. At the lowest possible temperature for these experiments, 1.1 K, and at the lowest power setting, -55 dBm, evanescent waves are transmitted without loss and the resonance exhibits a quality factor of ~ 4200. A second, smaller resonance, which evolves with increasing power from the main resonance, is also investigated. In contrast to the behavior of the main resonance, this second peak grows as the incident power i…
Chiral spin pumping is the generation of a unidirectional spin current in half of ferromagnetic films or conductors by dynamic dipolar stray fields from close-by nanomagnets. We formulate a general theory of long-range chiral interactions between magnets mediated by unidirectional traveling waves, e.g., spin waves in a magnetic film or microwaves in a waveguide. The traveling waves emitted by an excited magnet can be perfectly trapped by a second, initially passive, magnet by a dynamical interference effect. When both magnets are excited by a uniform microwave, the chiral interaction between t…
The linear and nonlinear interactions between spin waves (magnons) and acoustic waves (phonons) in magnetostrictive materials provide an exciting opportunity for realizing novel microwave signal processing devices and spintronic circuits. Here we demonstrate the parametric pumping of spin waves by acoustic waves, the possibility of which has long been theoretically anticipated but never experimentally realized. Spin waves propagating in a thin film of yttrium iron garnet (YIG), a magnetostrictive ferrimagnet with low spin and acoustic wave damping, are pumped using an acoustic resonator driven…
We present a microscopic theory of magnon transport in ferromagnetic insulators (FIs). Using magnon injection through microwave pumping, we propose a way to generate magnon dc currents and show how to enhance their amplitudes in hybrid ferromagnetic insulating junctions. To this end focusing on a single FI, we first revisit microwave pumping at finite (room) temperature from the microscopic viewpoint of magnon injection. Next, we apply it to two kinds of hybrid ferromagnetic insulating junctions. The first is the junction between a quasi-equilibrium magnon condensate and magnons being pumped b…
We present a method to quantify the spin Hall angle (SHA) with spin pumping and microwave photoresistance measurements. With this method, we separate the inverse spin Hall effect (ISHE) from other unwanted effects for permalloy/Pt bilayers using out-of-plane microwave excitation. Through microwave photoresistance measurements, the in- and out-of-plane precessing angles of the magnetization are determined and enabled for the exact determination of the injected pure spin current. This method is demonstrated with an almost perfect Lorentz line-shape for the obtained ISHE signal and the frequency …
We report electrical detection of the dynamical part of the spin pumping current emitted during ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) using the inverse Spin Hall Effect (ISHE). The experiment is performed on a YIG$|$Pt bilayer. The choice of YIG, a magnetic insulator, ensures that no charge current flows between the two layers and only pure spin current produced by the magnetization dynamics are transferred into the adjacent strong spin-orbit Pt layer via spin pumping. To avoid measuring the parasitic eddy currents induced at the frequency of the microwave source, a resonance at half the frequency is …
Voltage induced magnetization dynamics of magnetic thin films is a valuable tool to study anisotropic fields, exchange couplings, magnetization damping and spin pumping mechanism. A particularly well established technique is the ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) generated by the coupling of microwave photons and magnetization eigenmodes in the GHz range. Here we review the basic concepts of the so-called acoustic ferromagnetic resonance technique (a-FMR) induced by the coupling of surface acoustic waves (SAW) and magnetization of thin films. Interestingly, additional to the benefits of the microwa…
Irradiating a Josephson junction with microwaves can operate not only on the amplitude but also on the phase of the Josephson current. This requires breaking time inversion symmetry, which is achieved by introducing a phase lapse between the microwave components acting on the two† sides of the junction. General symmetry arguments and the solution of a specific single level quantum dot model show that this induces chirality in the Cooper pair dynamics, due to the topology of the Andreev bound state wavefunction. Another essential condition is to break electron-hole symmetry within the junction.…
We study spin pumping into an anisotropic Dirac electron system induced by microwave irradiation to an adjacent ferromagnetic insulator theoretically. We formulate the Gilbert damping enhancement due to the spin current flowing into the Dirac electron system using second-order perturbation with respect to the interfacial exchange coupling. As an illustration, we consider the anisotropic Dirac system realized in bismuth to show that the Gilbert damping varies according to the magnetization direction in the ferromagnetic insulator. Our results indicate that this setup can provide helpful informa…
We review and extend the theory of chiral pumping of spin waves by magnetodipolar stray fields that generate unidirectional spin currents and asymmetric magnon densities. We illustrate the physical principles by two kinds of chiral excitations of magnetic films, i.e., by the evanescent Oersted field of a narrow metallic stripline with an AC current bias and a magnetic nanowire under ferromagnetic resonance.
Magnetic skyrmions are regarded as promising information candidates in future spintronic devices, which have been investigated theoretically and experimentally in isotropic system. Recently, the sta- bilization of antiskyrmions in the presence of anisotropic Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and its dynamics driven by current have been investigated. Here, we report the antiskyrmion motion with the combined action of the in-plane magnetic field and microwave electric fields. The in-plane mag- netic field breaks the rotation symmetry of the antiskyrmion, and perpendicular microwave electric fiel…
Random matrix theory has proven very successful in the understanding of the spectra of chaotic systems. Depending on symmetry with respect to time reversal and the presence or absence of a spin 1/2 there are three ensembles, the Gaussian orthogonal (GOE), Gaussian unitary (GUE), and Gaussian symplectic (GSE) one. With a further particle-antiparticle symmetry the chiral variants of these ensembles, the chiral orthogonal, unitary, and symplectic ensembles (the BDI, AIII, and CII in Cartan's notation) appear. A microwave study of the chiral ensembles is presented using a linear chain of evanescen…
We experimentally investigate spin-orbit torques and spin pumping in NiFe/Pt bilayers with direct and interrupted interfaces. The damping-like and field-like torques are simultaneously measured with spin-torque ferromagnetic resonance tuned by a dc bias current, whereas spin pumping is measured electrically through the inverse spin Hall effect using a microwave cavity. Insertion of an atomically thin Cu dusting layer at the interface reduces the damping-like torque, field-like torque, and spin pumping by nearly the same factor of ~1.4. This finding confirms that the observed spin-orbit torques…
A microwave technique is employed to simultaneously examine the spin pumping and the spin Seebeck effect processes in a YIG|Pt bilayer system. The experimental results show that for these two processes, the spin current flows in opposite directions. The temporal dynamics of the longitudinal spin Seebeck effect exhibits that the effect depends on the diffusion of bulk thermal-magnons in the thermal gradient in the ferromagnetic-insulator|normal-metal system.
We consider a single-electron transistor in the form of a ferromagnetic dot in contact with normal-metal and pinned ferromagnetic leads. Microwave-driven precession by the dot induces a pumped electric current. In open circuits, this pumping produces a measurable reverse bias voltage, which can be enhanced and made highly nonlinear by Coulomb blockade in the dot. The dependence of this bias on the power and spectrum of microwave irradiation may be utilized to develop nanoscale microwave detectors analogous to single-electron transistor-based electrostatic sensors and nanoelectromechanical devi…
We develop a time-dependent nonequilibrium Green function (NEGF) approach to the problem of spin pumping by precessing magnetization in one of the ferromagnetic layers within F/I/F magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) or F/I/N semi-MTJs in the presence of intrinsic Rashba spin-orbit coupling (SOC) at the F/I interface or the extrinsic SOC in the bulk of F layers of finite thickness (F-ferromagnet; N-normal metal; I-insulating barrier). To express the time-averaged pumped charge current, or the corresponding dc voltage signal in open circuits that was measured in recent experiments on semi-MTJs [T.…
We demonstrate spin pumping, i.e. the generation of a pure spin current by precessing magnetization, without application of microwave radiation commonly used in spin pumping experiments. We use femtosecond laser pulses to simultaneously launch the magnetization precession in each of two ferromagnetic layers of a Galfenol-based spin valve and monitor the temporal evolution of the magnetizations. The spin currents generated by the precession cause a dynamic coupling of the two layers. This coupling has dissipative character and is especially efficient when the precession frequencies in the two l…
The spin waves and ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) contribution to the spin pumping signal is studied in the Ta/CoFeB interface under different excitation bias fields. Ferromagnetic resonance is excited utilizing a coplanar waveguide and a microwave generator. Using a narrow waveguide of about 3 μm, magnetostatic surface spin waves with large wavevector (k) of about 0.81 μm^-1 are excited. A large k value results in dissociation of spin waves and FMR frequencies according to the surface spin wave dispersion relation. Spin waves and FMR contribution to the spin pumping are calculated based on the…
Spin pumping is a widely recognized method to generate the spin current in the spintronics, which is acknowledged as a fundamentally dynamic process equivalent to the spin-transfer torque. In this work, we theoretically verify that the oscillating spin current can be pumped from the microwave-motivated breathing skyrmion. The skyrmion spin pumping can be excited by a relatively low frequency compared with the ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) and the current density is larger than the ordinary FMR spin pumping. Based on the skyrmion spin pumping, we build a high reading-speed racetrack memory mode…
We propose a method to separate the inverse spin Hall effect (ISHE) from galvanomagnetic effects in spin pumping experiments on metallic bilayer systems by measuring the dc electromotive force in two orthogonal directions. Calculations of dc voltages in longitudinal and Hall directions induced in Ni81Fe19 and Ni81Fe19/Pt films at ferromagnetic resonance in a microwave cavity predict that contributions from ISHE and from the galvanomagnetic effects, i.e. the anisotropic magnetoresistance and the anomalous Hall effect, exhibit distinct signal symmetry as well as angular dependence when changing …
Spin pumping and spin-transfer torques are two reciprocal phenomena widely studied in ferromagnetic materials. However, pumping from antiferromagnets and its relation to current-induced torques have not been explored. By calculating how electrons scatter off a normal metal-antiferromagnetic interface, we derive pumped spin and staggered spin currents in terms of the staggered field, the magnetization, and their rates of change. For both compensated and uncompensated interfaces, spin pumping is of a similar magnitude as in ferromagnets with a direction controlled by the polarization of the driv…
Dynamic response of spin accumulation to a time-dependent magnetic field has been investigated in a ferromagnetic/nonmagnetic bilayer under ferromagnetic resonance. In this system, magnetization precession driven by a microwave generates direct-current (dc) and alternate-current (ac) spin accumulation in the nonmagnetic layer by the spin pumping. The ac spin accumulation is coupled with the microwave magnetic field through a dynamical Hanle spin precession, giving rise to rectified spin accumulation comparable with the dc spin accumulation directly generated by the spin pumping.
Magnonics and magnon spintronics aim at the utilization of spin waves and magnons, their quanta, for the construction of wave-based logic networks via the generation of pure all-magnon spin currents and their interfacing with electrical charge transport. The promise of efficient parallel data processing and low power consumption renders this field one of the most promising research areas in spintronics. In this context, the process of parallel parametric amplification, i.e., the conversion of microwave photons into magnons at one half of the microwave frequency, has proven to be a versatile to…
We report on the determination of the spin Hall angle and the identification of the role of the interface roughness for the inverse spin Hall effect (ISHE) in ultra-clean, defect-reduced epitaxial Pt films. By applying vector network analyzer ferromagnetic resonance spectroscopy to a series of single crystalline Fe (12 nm) /Pt (t$_\text{Pt}$) bilayers we determine the real part of the spin mixing conductance $(4.4\:\pm\:0.2)\cdot 10^{19}\: $m$^{-2}$ and reveal a very small spin diffusion length in the epitaxial Pt $(1.1\:\pm\:0.1)$ nm film. We investigate the spin pumping and ISHE in a stripe …
Parallel pumping of nuclear spin waves in antiferromagnetic CsMnF3 at liquid helium temperatures and magnetoelastic waves in antiferromagnetic FeBO3 at liquid nitrogen temperature in a helical resonator was studied. It was found that the absorbed microwave power is approximately equal to the irradiated power from the sample and that the main restriction mechanism of absortption in both cases is defined by the nonlinear radiation damping predicted about two decades ago. We believe that the nonlinear radiation damping is a common feature of parallel pumping technique of all normal magnetic excit…
Rectification of microwave oscillations of magnetization in a permalloy film is realized using planar Hall effect. Two different rectified signals are obtained: a signal from the linearly excited uniform magnetization precession at the frequency of the external pumping and a signal from the pairs of contra-propagating short-wavelength spin waves parametrically generated at a half of the pumping frequency. The second, most unusual, rectified signal is caused by the uniform component of the dynamic magnetization created due to the interference of the phase correlated pairs of parametric spin wav…
We study spin and charge currents pumped by precessing magnetization of a single ferromagnetic layer within F|I|N or F|I|F (F-ferromagnet; I-insulator; N-normal-metal) multilayers of nanoscale thickness attached to two normal metal electrodes with no applied bias voltage between them. Both simple one-dimensional model, consisting of a single precessing spin and a potential barrier as the "sample," and realistic three-dimensional devices are investigated. In the rotating reference frame, where the magnetization appears to be static, these junctions are mapped onto a four-terminal dc circuit who…
We formulate a scattering theory to study magnetic films in microwave cavities beyond the independent-spin and rotating wave approximations of the Tavis-Cummings model. We demonstrate that strong coupling can be realized not only for the ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) mode, but also for spin wave resonances (SWRs); the coupling strengths are mode dependent and decrease with increasing mode index. The strong coupling regime can be also accessed electrically by spin pumping into a metal contact.
We theoretically investigate spin transport at the interface between the ferromagnetic insulator(FI) and a superconductor(SC). Considering a simple FI-SC interface model, we derive formulas for the spin current and spin-current noise induced by microwave irradiation (spin pumping) or the temperature gradient (the spin Seebeck effect). We show how the superconducting coherence factor affects the temperature dependence of the spin current. We also calculate the spin-current noise in thermal equilibrium and in non-equilibrium states induced by the spin pumping, and compare them quantitatively for…
Spin pumping refers to the microwave-driven spin current injection from a ferromagnet into the adjacent target material. We theoretically investigate the spin pumping into superconductors by fully taking account of impurity spin-orbit scattering that is indispensable to describe diffusive spin transport with finite spin diffusion length. We calculate temperature dependence of the spin pumping signal and show that a pronounced coherence peak appears immediately below the superconducting transition temperature Tc, which survives even in the presence of the spin-orbit scattering. The phenomenon p…
Nitrogen-vacancy (NV) magnetometry is a new technique for imaging spin waves in magnetic materials. It detects spin waves by their microwave magnetic stray fields, which decay evanescently on the scale of the spin-wavelength. Here, we use nanoscale control of a single-NV sensor as a wavelength filter to characterize frequency-degenerate spin waves excited by a microstrip in a thin-film magnetic insulator. With the NV-probe in contact with the magnet, we observe an incoherent mixture of thermal and microwave-driven spin waves. By retracting the tip, we progressively suppress the small-wavelengt…
We demonstrate the coherent coupling and the resulting transfer of phase information between microwave and optical fields in a single nitrogen vacancy center in diamond. The relative phase of two microwave fields is encoded in a coherent superposition spin state. This phase information is then retrieved with a pair of optical fields. A related process is also used for the transfer of phase information from optical to microwave fields. These studies show the essential role of dark states, including optical pumping into the dark states, in the coherent microwave-optical coupling and open the doo…
This review focuses on the chirality observed in the excited states of the magnetic order, dielectrics, and conductors that hold transverse spins when they are evanescent. Even without any relativistic effect, the transverse spin of the evanescent waves are locked to the momentum and the surface normal of their propagation plane. This chirality thereby acts as a generalized spin-orbit interaction, which leads to the discovery of various chiral interactions between magnetic, phononic, electronic, photonic, and plasmonic excitations in spintronics that mediate the excitation of quasiparticles in…
We develop a method for universally resolving the important issue of separating spin pumping (SP) from spin rectification (SR) signals in bilayer spintronics devices. This method is based on the characteristic distinction of SP and SR, as revealed in their different angular and field symmetries. It applies generally for analyzing charge voltages in bilayers induced by the ferromagnetic resonance (FMR), independent of FMR line shape. Hence, it solves the outstanding problem that device specific microwave properties restrict the universal quantification of the spin Hall angle in bilayer devices …
A broad effort is underway to improve the sensitivity of nuclear magnetic resonance through the use of dynamic nuclear polarization. Nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond offer an appealing platform because these paramagnetic defects can be optically polarized efficiently at room temperature. However, work thus far has been mainly limited to single crystals because most polarization transfer protocols are sensitive to misalignment between the NV and magnetic field axes. Here we study the spin dynamics of NV-13C pairs in the simultaneous presence of optical excitation and microwave frequency…
Surface plasmons, free-electron collective oscillations in metallic nanostructures, provide abundant routes to manipulate light-electron interactions that can localize light energy and alter electromagnetic field distributions at subwavelength scales. The research field of plasmonics thus integrates nano-photonics with electronics. In contrast, electronics is also entering a new era of spintronics, where spin currents play a central role in driving devices. However, plasmonics and spin-current physics have so far been developed independently. Here, we demonstrate the generation of spin current…
Here, we investigate spin Hall angle of Pt in Ni80Fe20/Pt bilayer system by using a broadband spin pumping and inverse spin Hall effect measurement. An out-of-plane excitation geometry with application of external magnetic field perpendicular to the charge current direction is utilized in order to suppress unwanted galvanomagnetic effects. Magnetization precession angle on ferromagnetic resonance for wide excitation frequency range (4-14 GHz) is estimated from the rectification voltage of anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) and a conventional method of using microwave power in a coplanar waveg…

We demonstrate that the dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) of phosphorus donors in silicon can be very effective in a magnetic field of 4.6 T and at temperatures below 1 K. The DNP occurs due to the Overhauser effect following a cross relaxation via the forbidden flip-flop or flip-flip transitions. Nuclear polarization values $P>0.98$ were reached after 20 min of pumping with 0.4 $μ$W of microwave power. We evaluated that the ratio of hyperfine state populations increased by three orders of magnitude after 2 hours of pumping, and an extremely pure nuclear spin system containing $<10^{-11}$ of …
Spin pumping is a technique widely used to generate the pure spin current and characterize the spin-charge conversion in various systems. The reversing sign of the symmetric Lorentzian charge current with respect to opposite magnetic field is generally accepted as the key criterion to identify its pure spin current origin. However, we herein find that the rectified voltage due to the planar Hall effect can exhibit similar spurious signal, complicating and even misleading the analysis. The distribution of microwave magnetic field and induction current has strong influence on the magnetic field …
An intriguing feature of spintronics is the use of pure spin-currents to manipulate magnetization, e.g., spin-currents can switch magnetization in spin-torque MRAM, a next-generation DRAM alternative. Giant spin-currents via the spin Hall effect greatly expand the technological opportunities. Conversely, a ferromagnet/normal metal junction emits spin-currents under microwave excitation, i.e. spin-pumping. While such spin-currents are modulated at the excitation frequency, there is also a non-linear, rectified component that is commonly detected using the corresponding inverse spin Hall effect …
Motivated by recent experiments [P. Vaidya {\em et al.}, Science {\bf 368}, 160 (2020)] on spin pumping from sub-THz radiation-driven uniaxial antiferromagnetic insulator (AFI) MnF$_2$ into heavy metal (HM) Pt hosting strong spin-orbit (SO) coupling, we compute and compare pumped spin currents in Cu/MnF$_2$/Cu and Pt/MnF$_2$/Cu heterostructures. Recent theories of spin pumping by AFI have relied on simplistic Hamiltonians (such as tight-binding) and the scattering approach to quantum transport yielding the so-called interfacial spin mixing conductance (SMC), but the concept of SMC ceases to be…
