We consider the effect of stratification on systematic, large-scale flows generated in anelastic convection. We present results from three-dimensional numerical simulations of convection in a rotating plane layer in which the angle between the axis of rotation and gravity is allowed to vary. This model is representative of different latitudes of a spherical body. We consider two distinct parameter regimes: (i) weakly rotating and (ii) rapidly rotating. In each case, we examine the effect of stratification on the flow structure and heat transport properties focussing on the difference between Boussinesq and anelastic convection. Furthermore, we show that regimes (i) and (ii) generate very different large-scale flows and we investigate the role stratification has in modifying these flows. The stratified flows possess a net helicity not present in the Boussinesq cases which we suggest, when combined with the self-generated shear flows, could be important for dynamo action.
The onset of convection in a rotating cylindrical annulus with parallel ends filled with a compressible fluid is studied in the anelastic approximation. Thermal Rossby waves propagating in the azimuthal direction are found as solutions. The analogy to the case of Boussinesq convection in the presence of conical end surfaces of the annular region is emphasized. As in the latter case the results can be applied as an approximation for the description of the onset of anelastic convection in rotating spherical fluid shells. Reasonable agreement with three-dimensional numerical results published by …
We investigate the processes that lead to the generation of mean flows in two-dimensional anelastic convection. The simple model consists of a plane layer that is rotating about an axis inclined to gravity. The results are two-fold: firstly we numerically investigate the onset of convection in three-dimensions, paying particular attention to the role of stratification and highlight a curious symmetry. Secondly, we investigate the mechanisms that drive both zonal and meridional flows in two dimensions. We find that, in general, non-trivial Reynolds stresses can lead to systematic flows and, usi…
The validity of the anelastic approximation has recently been questioned in the regime of rapidly-rotating compressible convection in low Prandtl number fluids (Calkins et al. 2015). Given the broad usage and the high computational efficiency of sound-proof approaches in this astrophysically relevant regime, this paper clarifies the conditions for a safe application. The potential of the alternative pseudo-incompressible approximation is investigated, which in contrast to the anelastic approximation is shown to never break down for predicting the point of marginal stability. Its accuracy, howe…
The linear theory for rotating compressible convection in a plane layer geometry is presented for the astrophysically-relevant case of low Prandtl number gases. When the rotation rate of the system is large, the flow remains geostrophically balanced for all stratification levels investigated and the classical (i.e., incompressible) asymptotic scaling laws for the critical parameters are recovered. For sufficiently small Prandtl numbers, increasing stratification tends to further destabilise the fluid layer, decrease the critical wavenumber and increase the oscillation frequency of the convecti…
This paper was originally published in June 2013 in JFM (vol. 725). There was one result concerning an expression of viscous dissipation in convective flows and a second result on the condition of applicability of the anelastic liquid equation ($γ- 1 \ll 1$). We then found that this second result was wrong and the explanation why this is so was published as a corrigendum in July 2014 in JFM (vol. 751). In a few words, the origin of the error is that we have derived an expression for dissipation in the framework of the exact equations and subsequently used it in the framework of the anelastic m…
The surface zonal winds observed in the giant planets form a complex jet pattern with alternating prograde and retrograde direction. While the main equatorial band is prograde on the gas giants, both ice giants have a pronounced retrograde equatorial jet. We use three-dimensional numerical models of compressible convection in rotating spherical shells to explore the properties of zonal flows in different regimes where either rotation or buoyancy dominates the force balance. We conduct a systematic parameter study to quantify the dependence of zonal flows on the background density stratificatio…
The speed of sound greatly exceeds typical flow velocities in many stellar and planetary interiors. To follow the slow evolution of subsonic motions, various sound-proof models attempt to remove fast acoustic waves whilst retaining stratified convection and buoyancy dynamics. In astrophysics, anelastic models typically receive the most attention in the class of sound-filtered stratified models. Generally, anelastic models remain valid in nearly adiabatically stratified regions like stellar convection zones, but may break down in strongly sub-adiabatic, stably stratified layers common in stella…
Motivated by understanding the dynamics of stellar and planetary interiors, we have performed a set of direct numerical simulations of Boussinesq convection in a rotating full sphere. The domain is internally heated with fixed temperature and stress-free boundary conditions, but fixed heat flux and no-slip boundary conditions are also briefly considered. We particularly focus on the large-scale coherent structures and the mean zonal flows that can develop in the system. At Prandtl number of unity, as the thermal forcing (measured by the Rayleigh number) is increased above the value for the ons…
We propose a new self-consistent dynamo mechanism for the generation of large-scale magnetic fields in natural objects. Recent computational studies have described the formation of large-scale vortices (LSVs) in rotating turbulent convection. Here we demonstrate that for magnetic Reynolds numbers below the threshold for small-scale dynamo action, such turbulent flows can sustain large-scale magnetic fields --- i.e. fields with a significant component on the scale of the system.
One prominent feature in the atmospheres of Jupiter and Saturn is the appearance of large-scale vortices. However, the sustaining mechanism of these large-scale vortices remains unclear. One possible mechanism is that these large-scale vortices are driven by rotating convection. Here we present numerical simulation results on rapidly rotating Rayleigh-Bénard convection at a small Prandtl number $Pr=0.1$ (close to the turbulent Prandtl numbers of Jupiter and Saturn). We have identified four flow regimes in our simulation: multiple small vortices, coexisted large-scale cyclone and anticyclone, l…
The elliptical instability is an instability of elliptical streamlines, which can be excited by large-scale tidal flows in rotating fluid bodies, and excites inertial waves if the dimensionless tidal amplitude ($ε$) is sufficiently large. It operates in convection zones but its interactions with turbulent convection have not been studied in this context. We perform an extensive suite of Cartesian hydrodynamical simulations in wide boxes to explore the interactions of the elliptical instability and Rayleigh-Bénard convection. We find that geostrophic vortices generated by the elliptical instabi…
Overshooting of turbulent motions from convective regions into adjacent stably stratified zones plays a significant role in stellar interior dynamics as this process may lead to mixing of chemical species, and contribute to the transport of angular momentum and magnetic fields. We present a series of fully non-linear, three-dimensional (3D) anelastic simulations of overshooting convection in a spherical shell which are focused on the dependence of the overshooting dynamics on the density stratification and the rotation, both key ingredients in stars which however have not been studied systemat…
When a fluid system is subject to strong rotation, centrifugal fluid motion is expected, i.e., denser (lighter) fluid moves outward (inward) from (toward) the axis of rotation. Here we demonstrate, both experimentally and numerically, the existence of an unexpected outward motion of warm and lighter vortices in rotating turbulent convection. This anomalous vortex motion occurs under rapid rotations when the centrifugal buoyancy is sufficiently strong to induce a symmetry-breaking in the vorticity field, i.e., the vorticity of the cold anticyclones overrides that of the warm cyclones. We show t…
Numerical MHD simulations play increasingly important role for understanding mechanisms of stellar magnetism. We present simulations of convection and dynamos in density-stratified rotating spherical fluid shells. We employ a new 3D simulation code for the solution of a physically consistent anelastic model of the process with a minimum number of parameters. The reported dynamo simulations extend into a "buoyancy-dominated" regime where the buoyancy forcing is dominant while the Coriolis force is no longer balanced by pressure gradients and strong anti-solar differential rotation develops as a…
We find an instability resulting in generation of large-scale vorticity in a fast rotating small-scale turbulence or turbulent convection with inhomogeneous fluid density along the rotational axis in anelastic approximation. The large-scale instability causes excitation of two modes: (i) the mode with dominant vertical vorticity and with the mean velocity being independent of the vertical coordinate; (ii) the mode with dominant horizontal vorticity and with the mean momentum being independent of the vertical coordinate. The mode with the dominant vertical vorticity can be excited in a fast rot…
In rotating Rayleigh-Bénard convection, columnar vortices advect horizontally in a stochastic manner. When the centrifugal buoyancy is present the vortices exhibit radial motions that can be explained through a Langevin-type stochastic model. Surprisingly, anomalous outward motion of cyclones is observed in a centrifugation-dominant flow regime, which is contrary to the well-known centrifugal effect. We interpret this phenomenon as a symmetry-breaking of both the population and vorticity magnitude of the vortices brought about by the centrifugal buoyancy. Consequently, the cyclones submit to t…
New insight into the contribution of the microscale vortex evolution towards convection heat transfer in porous media is presented in this paper. The objective is to determine how the microscale vortices influence convection heat transfer in turbulent flow inside porous media. The microscale temperature distribution is analyzed using flow visualization in 2D using streamlines and in 3D using Q structures. The pertinent observations are supplemented with the comparison of surface skin friction and heat transfer using: (1) surface skin friction lines and (2) joint PDF of pressure and skin fricti…
The linear stability threshold of the Rayleigh-Benard configuration is analyzed with compressible effects taken into account. It is assumed that the fluid obeys a Newtonian rheology and Fourier's law of thermal transport with constant, uniform (dynamic) viscosity and thermal conductivity in a uniform gravity field. Top and bottom boundaries are maintained at different constant temperatures and we consider here boundary conditions of zero tangential stress and impermeable walls. Under these conditions, and with the Boussinesq approximation, Rayleigh (1916) first obtained analytically the critic…
One of the most prominent dynamical features of turbulent, rapidly-rotating convection is the formation of large-scale coherent structures, driven by Reynolds stresses resulting from the small-scale convective flows. In spherical geometry, such structures consist of intense zonal flows that are invariant along the rotation axis. In planar geometry, long-lived, depth-invariant structures also form at large scales, but, in the absence of horizontal anisotropy, they consist of vortices that grow to the domain size. In this work, through the introduction of horizontal anisotropy into a numerical m…
We develop a theory of three-dimensional slow Rossby waves in rotating spherical density stratified convection. The Rossby waves with frequencies which are much smaller than the rotating frequency, are excited by a non-axisymmetric instability from the equilibrium based on the developed convection. These waves interact with the inertial waves and the density stratified convection. The density stratification is taken into account using the anelastic approximation for very low-Mach-number flows. We study long-term planetary Rossby waves with periods which are larger than two years. We suggest th…
We present spatial-resolved measurements of the columnar vortex structures in rotating Rayleigh-Bénard convection. The scaled radial profiles of the azimuthal velocity $u_ϕ(r)$ and vertical vorticity $ω(r)$ of the vortices are analyzed and compared with the predictions of the asymptotic theory. The results reveal that the asymptotic theory predicts accurately $u_ϕ(r)$ and $ω(r)$ in the geostrophic convection regime, but extension of the theory in the weak rotation regime is needed to interpret the rotation-dependence of the experimental data. Our measurements of the mean velocity, vorticity of…
Numerical data for the heat transfer as a function of the Prandtl (Pr) and Rossby (Ro) numbers in turbulent rotating Rayleigh-Benard convection are presented for Rayleigh number Ra = 10^8. When Ro is fixed the heat transfer enhancement with respect to the non-rotating value shows a maximum as function of Pr. This maximum is due to the reduced efficiency of Ekman pumping when Pr becomes too small or too large. When Pr becomes small, i.e. for large thermal diffusivity, the heat that is carried by the vertical vortices spreads out in the middle of the cell, and Ekman pumping thus becomes less eff…
The surface of both Jupiter and Saturn has magnificent vortical storms which help shape the dynamic nature of their atmospheres. Land- and space-based observational campaigns over time have established several properties of these vortices, with some being similar between the two planets, while others are different. Shallow-water hydrodynamics, where the vortices are treated as shallow weather-layer phenomenon, is commonly evoked for explaining their formation and properties. Here we report novel formation mechanisms for vortices where the primary driving mechanism is the deep planetary convect…
Using numerical simulations of rapidly rotating Boussinesq convection in a Cartesian box, we study the formation of long-lived, large-scale, depth-invariant coherent structures. These structures, which consist of concentrated cyclones, grow to the horizontal size of the box, with velocities significantly larger than the convective motions. We vary the rotation rate, the thermal driving and the aspect ratio in order to determine the domain of existence of these large-scale vortices (LSV). We find that two conditions are required for their formation. First, the Rayleigh number, a meaure of the t…
Numerous land and space-based observations have established that Saturn has a persistent hexagonal flow pattern near its north pole. While observations abound, the physics behind its formation is still uncertain. Although several phenomenological models have been able to reproduce this feature, a self-consistent model for how such a large-scale polygonal jet forms in the highly turbulent atmosphere of Saturn is lacking. Here we present a 3D fully-nonlinear anelastic simulation of deep thermal convection in the outer layers of gas giant planets which spontaneously generates giant polar cyclones…
The phenomenon of thermal and compositional (chemical) convection is very common in nature and therefore of great importance from the point of view of understanding of many fundamental aspects of the environment and universe. A number of books have been written on the topic, such as e.g. the seminal work of Chandrasekhar (1961) on Hydrodynamic and Hydromagnetic Stability, a large portion of which is devoted to the convective instability near its onset or the outstanding book of Getling (1998) where systematization of the knowledge on convection has been continued with a thorough description of…
Coriolis-centrifugal convection (C$^3$) in a cylindrical domain constitutes an idealised model of tornadic storms, where the rotating cylinder represents the mesocyclone of a supercell thunderstorm. We present a suite of C$^3$ direct numerical simulations, analysing the influence of centrifugal buoyancy on the formation of tornado-like vortices (TLVs). TLVs are self-consistently generated provided the flow is within the quasi-cyclostrophic (QC) regime. This requires the Froude number to be greater than the radius-to-height aspect ratio, $Fr \gtrsim γ$. We show that the TLVs share many features…
We present a numerical study of vorticity production and transport in the two-dimensional Rayleigh-Bénard (RB) convection. Direct numerical simulations are carried out in the Rayleigh number ($Ra$) range $10^{5}\le Ra \le 10^{6}$, the Prandtl number ($Pr$) of 0.71, and the aspect ratio ($Γ$) of the convection cell range $0.75\le Γ\le 6$. We found that the flow structure and temperature distribution vary with $Γ$ greatly due to multiple vortices interaction. Further investigation on the vorticity production and transport reveals that, in the RB convection, in addition to the vorticity productio…
We study numerically the melting of a horizontal layer of a pure solid above a convecting layer of its fluid rotating about the vertical axis. In the rotating regime studied here, with Rayleigh numbers of order $10^7$, convection takes the form of columnar vortices, the number and size of which depend upon the Ekman and Prandtl numbers, as well as the geometry -- periodic or confined. As the Ekman and Rayleigh numbers vary, the number and average area of vortices vary in inverse proportion, becoming thinner and more numerous with decreasing Ekman number. The vortices transport heat to the phas…
Several dynamical stages of the Marangoni convection of an evaporating sessile drop are obtained. We jointly take into account the hydrodynamics of an evaporating sessile drop, effects of the thermal conduction in the drop and the diffusion of vapor in air. The stages are characterized by different number of vortices in the drop and the spatial location of vortices. During the early stage the array of vortices arises near a surface of the drop and induces a non-monotonic spatial distribution of the temperature over the drop surface. The number of near-surface vortices in the drop is controlled…
We generalize a recent method for computing optimal 2D convection cooling flows in a horizontal layer to a wide range of geometries, including those relevant for technological applications. We write the problem in a conformal pair of coordinates which are the pure conduction temperature and its harmonic conjugate. We find optimal flows for cooling a cylinder in an annular domain, a hot plate embedded in a cold surface, and a channel with hot interior and cold exterior. With a constraint of fixed kinetic energy, the optimal flows are all essentially the same in the conformal coordinates. In the…
Vortices play an unique role in heat and momentum transports in astro- and geo-physics, and it is also the origin of the Earth's dynamo. A question existing for a long time is whether the movement of vortices can be predicted or understood based on their historical data. Here we use both the experiments and numerical simulations to demonstrate some generic features of vortex motion and distribution. It can be found that the vortex movement can be described on the framework of Brownian particles where they move ballistically for the time shorter than some critical timescales, and then move diff…
Direct numerical simulations are employed to reveal three distinctly different flow regions in rotating spherical Rayleigh-Bénard convection. In the low-latitude region $\mathrm{I}$ vertical (parallel to the axis of rotation) convective columns are generated between the hot inner and the cold outer sphere. The mid-latitude region $\mathrm{II}$ is dominated by vertically aligned convective columns formed between the Northern and Southern hemispheres of the outer sphere. The diffusion-free scaling, which indicates bulk-dominated convection, originates from this mid-latitude region. In the equato…
Numerical and experimental data for the heat transfer as function of the Rossby number Ro in turbulent rotating Rayleigh-Bénard convection are presented for Prandtl number Pr=4.38 and Rayleigh number $Ra=2.91\times10^8$ up to $Ra=4.52\times10^9$. The aspect ratio Γ= D/L, where L is the height and D the diameter of the cylindrical sample, is varied between Γ=0.5 and Γ=2.0. Without rotation, where the aspect ratio influences the global large scale circulation, we see a small aspect-ratio dependence in the Nusselt number for $Ra=2.91\times10^8$. However, for stronger rotation, i.e. $1/Ro \gg 1/Ro…
Weakly-rotating turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection was studied experimentally and numerically. With increasing rotation and large enough Rayleigh number an abrupt transition from a turbulent state with nearly rotation-independent heat transport to another turbulent state with enhanced heat transfer is observed at a critical inverse Rossby number $1/Ro_c \simeq 0.4$. Whereas for $1/Ro < 1/Ro_c$ the strength of the large-scale convection-roll is either enhanced or essentially unmodified depending on parameters, its strength is increasingly diminished beyond $1/Ro_c$ where it competes with Ekma…
Theoretical description and numerical simulation of an evaporating sessile drop are developed. We jointly take into account the hydrodynamics of an evaporating sessile drop, effects of the thermal conduction in the drop and the diffusion of vapor in air. A shape of the rotationally symmetric drop is determined within the quasistationary approximation. Nonstationary effects in the diffusion of the vapor are also taken into account. Simulation results agree well with the data of evaporation rate measurements for the toluene drop. Marangoni forces associated with the temperature dependence of the…
Oscillatory double-diffusive convection (ODDC, more traditionally called semiconvection) is a form of linear double-diffusive instability that occurs in fluids that are unstably stratified in temperature (Schwarzschild unstable), but stably stratified in chemical composition (Ledoux stable). This scenario is thought to be quite common in the interiors of stars and giant planets, and understanding the transport of heat and chemical species by ODDC is of great importance to stellar and planetary evolution models. Fluids unstable to ODDC have a tendency to form convective thermo-compositional lay…
The effect of domain anisotropy on the inverse cascade occurring within the geostrophic turbulence regime of rapidly rotating Rayleigh-Bénard convection (RRBC) is investigated. In periodic domains with square cross-section in the horizontal a domain-filling dipole state is present. For rectangular periodic domains a Kolmogorov-like flow consisting of a periodic array of alternating unidirectional jets with embedded vortices is observed, together with an underlying weak meandering transverse jet. Similar transitions occurring in weakly dissipative two-dimensional flows driven by externally impo…
Pattern forming with externally imposed symmetry is ubiquitous in nature but lightly studied. We present experimental studies of pattern formation and selection by spatial periodic forcing in rapidly rotating convection. We observe symmetric convection patterns in form of regular vortex lattice near the instability onset, when the periodicity of the external forcing is set close to the intrinsic vortex spacing. We show that the new patterns arise as a dynamical process of imperfect bifurcation which can be well described by a Ginzburg-Landau-like model. With increasing buoyancy strength the eff…
Rapidly rotating convection-driven dynamos are investigated under different kinematic and magnetic boundary conditions using DNS. At a fixed rotation rate, represented by the Ekman number $E=5\times10^{-7}$, the thermal forcing is varied from 2 to 20 times its value at the onset of convection ($\mathcal{R}=Ra/Ra_c=2-20$), keeping the fluid properties constant ($Pr=Pr_m=1$). The statistical behavior, force balance and heat transport characteristics of the dynamos depend on boundary conditions that dictate both boundary layer and the interior dynamics. At a fixed thermal forcing ($\mathcal{R}=3$…
In turbulent thermal convection in cylindrical samples of aspect ratio Γ= D/L (D is the diameter and L the height) the Nusselt number Nu is enhanced when the sample is rotated about its vertical axis, because of the formation of Ekman vortices that extract additional fluid out of thermal boundary layers at the top and bottom. We show from experiments and direct numerical simulations that the enhancement occurs only above a bifurcation point at a critical inverse Rossby number $1/\Ro_c$, with $1/\Ro_c \propto 1/Γ$. We present a Ginzburg-Landau like model that explains the existence of a bifurca…
Five-minutes oscillations is one of the basic properties of solar convection. Observations show mixture of a large number of acoustic wave fronts propagating from their sources. We investigate the process of acoustic waves excitation from the point of view of individual events, by using realistic 3D radiative hydrodynamic simulation of the quiet Sun. The results show that the excitation events are related to dynamics vortex tubes (or swirls) in the intergranular lanes. These whirlpool-like flows are characterized by very strong horizontal velocities (7 - 11 km/s) and downflows (~ 7 km/s), and …
This study offers an explanation of a recently observed effect of destabilization of free convective flows by weak rotation. After studying several models where flows are driven by a simultaneous action of convection and rotation, it is concluded that the destabilization is observed in the cases where centrifugal force acts against main convective circulation. At relatively low Prandtl numbers this counter action can split the main vortex into two counter rotating vortices, where the interaction leads to instability. At larger Prandtl numbers, the counter action of the centrifugal force steepe…
The effects of the semitransparent winodw's aspect ratio on the interaction of the collimated beam with natural convection have been investigated numerically in the present work. The combination of geometrical parameters of the semitransparent window, i.e., height ratio ($h_r$) and window width ratio ($w_r$) and Planck numbers of the medium have been considered. The other parameters, like flow parameter (Ra$=10^5$), fluid parameter (Pr=0.71), thermal parameter (N), Irradiation (G=1000 $W/m^2$), Angle of incidence ($ϕ=135^0$) and geometrical parameter of the geometry ($A_r$=1) and the wall cond…
We analyse the long-time evolution of the three-dimensional flow in a closed cubic turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection cell via a Koopman eigenfunction analysis. A data-driven basis derived from diffusion kernels known in machine learning is employed here to represent a regularized generator of the unitary Koopman group in the sense of a Galerkin approximation. The resulting Koopman eigenfunctions can be grouped into subsets in accordance with the discrete symmetries in a cubic box. In particular, a projection of the velocity field onto the first group of eigenfunctions reveals the four stabl…
Heat and momentum transfer of low-Prandtl-number fluid ($Pr=0.029$) in a closed rectangular cavity ($100\times60\times10$ mm$^3$) heated at one side and cooled at the opposite side are analyzed. The electromagnetic forces into the liquid metal are generated by the travelling magnetic field inductor and directed towards buoyancy forces. Large eddy simulations are performed with the Grashof number $Gr$ from $1.9\cdot 10^5$ to $7.6\cdot 10^7$ and the electromagnetic forcing parameter $F$ from $2.6\cdot 10^4$ to $2.6\cdot10^6$. An experimental validation of the simulation results of vertical conve…
We investigate the coupled dynamics of quantized vortices and normal fluid in superfluid $^4$He at finite temperatures using a numerical approach based on the vortex filament model (VFM) and lattice Boltzmann method (LBM). The LBM allows us to simulate a fluid flow with only local operations, i .e., rather than solving the Navier--Stokes (NS) equations directly; a fluid flow is considered a convection of mesoscopic particles between sites on a lattice grid. Although the two-fluid nature of He II makes its flow complex, the particle-like treatment of the normal fluid in the LBM significantly re…
The heat transfer behavior of convection-driven dynamos in a rotating plane layer between two parallel plates, heated from below and cooled from the top, is investigated. At a fixed rotation rate (Ekman Number, $E=10^{-6}$) and fluid properties (thermal and magnetic Prandtl numbers, $Pr=Pr_m=1$), both dynamo convection (DC) and non-magnetic rotating convection (RC) simulations are performed to demarcate the effect of magnetic field on heat transport at different thermal forcings (Rayleigh Number, $Ra=3.83\times10^{9}-3.83\times10^{10}$). In this range, our turbulence resolving simulations demo…

Granular flows down inclined channels with smooth boundaries are common in nature and in the industry. Nevertheless, the common setup of flat boundaries has comparatively been much less investigated than the bumpy boundaries one, which is used by most experimental and numerical studies to avoid sliding effects. Using DEM numerical simulations with side walls we recover quantitatively experimental results. At larger angles we predict a rich behavior, including granular convection and inverted density profiles suggesting a Rayleigh-Bénard type of instability. In many aspects flows on a flat base…
