We present diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) and path-integral Monte Carlo (PIMC) calculations of a one-dimensional Bose system with realistic interparticle interactions in a periodic external potential. Our main aim is to test the predictions of the Luttinger liquid (LL) theory, in particular with respect to the superfluid-Mott insulator transition at both zero and finite temperatures, in the predicted robust and fragile superfluid regimes. For that purpose, we present our results of the superfluid fraction $ρ_s/ρ_0$, the one-body density matrix, the two-body correlation functions, and the static structure factor. The DMC and PIMC results in the limit of very low temperature for $ρ_s/ρ_0$ agree, but the LL model for scaling $ρ_s/ρ_0$ does not fit the data well. The critical depth of the periodic potential is close to the values obtained for ultracold gases with different models of interaction, but with the same value of the bare LL parameter, demonstrating the universality of LL description. Algebraic decay of correlation functions is observed in the superfluid regime and exponential decay in the Mott-insulator one, as well as in all regimes at finite temperature for distances larger than a characteristic length.
We consider theoretically ultra-cold interacting bosonic atoms confined to a wire geometry and coupled to the field of an optical cavity. A spin-orbit coupling is induced via Raman transitions employing a cavity mode and a transverse running wave pump beam, the transition imprints a spatial dependent phase onto the atomic wavefunction. Adiabatic elimination of the cavity field leads to an effective Hamiltonian for the atomic degrees of freedom, with a self-consistency condition. We map the spin-orbit coupled bosonic wire to a bosonic ladder in a magnetic field, by discretizing the spatial dime…
We present two approaches capable of describing the dynamics of an interacting many body system on a lattice coupled globally to a dissipative bosonic mode. Physical realizations are for example ultracold atom gases in optical lattice coupled to a photonic mode of an optical cavity or electronic gases in solids coupled to THz cavity fields. The first approach, applicable for large dissipation strengths and any system size, is a variant of the many-body adiabatic elimination method for investigating the long time dynamics of the system. The second method extends the time-dependent matrix produc…
Motivated by recent work on the non-Hermitian skin effect in the bosonic Kitaev-Majorana model, we study the quantum criticality of interacting bosonic Kitaev-Hubbard models on a chain and a two-leg ladder. In the hard-core limit, we show exactly that the non-Hermitian skin effect disappears via a transformation from hard-core bosonic models to spin-1/2 models. We also show that hard-core bosons can engineer the Kitaev interaction, the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and the compass interaction in the presence of the complex hopping and pairing terms. Importantly, quantum criticalities of th…
Using near-exact numerical simulations we study the propagation of an impurity through a one-dimensional Bose lattice gas for varying bosonic interaction strengths and filling factors at zero temperature. The impurity is coupled to the Bose gas and confined to a separate tilted lattice. The precise nature of the transport of the impurity is specific to the excitation spectrum of the Bose gas which allows one to measure properties of the Bose gas non-destructively, in principle, by observing the impurity; here we focus on the spatial and momentum distributions of the impurity as well as its red…
We report the observation of many-body interaction effects for a homonuclear bosonic mixture in a three-dimensional optical lattice with variable state dependence along one axis. Near the superfluid-to-Mott insulator transition for one component, we find that the presence of a second component can reduce the apparent superfluid coherence, most significantly when it either experiences a strongly localizing lattice potential or none at all. We examine this effect by varying the relative populations and lattice depths, and discuss the observed behavior in view of recent proposals for scattering f…
We predict a generic manifestation of quantum interference in many-body bosonic systems resulting in a coherent enhancement of the average return probability in Fock space. This enhancement is both robust with respect to variations of external parameters and genuinely quantum insofar as it cannot be described within mean-field approaches. As a direct manifestation of the superposition principle in Fock space, it arises when many-body equilibration due to interactions sets in. Using a semiclassical approach based on interfering paths in Fock space, we calculate the magnitude of the backscatteri…
Motivated by recent advance in orbitally tuned Feshbach resonance experiments, we analyze the ground-state phase diagram and related low-energy excitation spectra of a d-wave interacting Bose gas. A two-channel model with d-wave symmetric interactions and background s-wave interactions is adopted to characterize the gas. The ground state is found to show three interesting phases: atomic, molecular, and atomic-molecular superfluidity. Remarkably differently from what was previously known in the p-wave case, the atomic superfluid is found to be momentum-independent in the present d-wave case. Bo…
A resonantly driven bosonic Josephson junction supports stable collective excitations, or quasiparticles, which constitute analogs of the Trojan wave packets previously explored with Rydberg atoms in strong microwave fields. We predict a quantum beating effect between such symmetryrelated many-body Trojan states taking place on time scales which are long in comparison with the driving period. Within a mean-field approximation, this quantum beating can be regarded as a manifestation of dynamical tunneling. On the full N-particle level, the beating phenomenon leads to an experimentally feasible,…
We present a theoretical analysis of spatial correlations in a one-dimensional driven-dissipative non-equilibrium condensate. Starting from a stochastic generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equation, we derive a noisy Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation for the phase dynamics. For sufficiently strong interactions, the coherence decays exponentially in close analogy to the equilibrium Bose gas. When interactions are small on a scale set by the nonequilibrium condition, we find through numerical simulations a crossover between a Gaussian and exponential decay with peculiar scaling of the coherence length on t…

We classify phases of a bosonic lattice model based on the computational complexity of classically simulating the system. We show that the system transitions from being classically simulable to classically hard to simulate as it evolves in time, extending previous results to include on-site number-conserving interactions and long-range hopping. Specifically, we construct a "complexity phase diagram" with "easy" and "hard" phases, and derive analytic bounds on the location of the phase boundary with respect to the evolution time and the degree of locality. We find that the location of the phase…
In a recent work, Murmann {\it et. al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf114}, 080402 (2015)] have experimentally prepared and manipulated a double-well optical potential containing a pair of Fermi atoms as a possible building block of Hubbard model. Here, we carry out a detailed theoretical study on the properties of both fermionic and bosonic two-site Hubbard models with a pair of interacting atoms in a trap with a double-well structure along z-axis and a 2D harmonic confinement along the transverse directions. We consider fermions as of two-component type and bosons as of spinless as well as of two sp…
We investigate the ground state and quantum dynamics of an interacting bosonic chain with the nonreciprocal hopping. In sharp contrast to its Hermitian counterpart, the ground state can support Mott insulators in systems with noninteger filling due to the competition between nonreciprocal hopping and the on-site interaction. For the quantum dynamics, conservation laws for non-Hermitian systems manifest a stark difference from their Hermitian counterpart. In particular, for any Hermitian operator that commutes with the Hamiltonian operator, its expectation value is guaranteed to be nonconserved…
We experimentally investigate the effects of parametric instabilities on the short-time heating process of periodically-driven bosons in 2D optical lattices with a continuous transverse (tube) degree of freedom. We analyze three types of periodic drives: (i) linear along the x-lattice direction only, (ii) linear along the lattice diagonal, and (iii) circular in the lattice plane. In all cases, we demonstrate that the BEC decay is dominated by the emergence of unstable Bogoliubov modes, rather than scattering in higher Floquet bands, in agreement with recent theoretical predictions. The observe…
We study the topological properties of an extended Bose-Hubbard model with cyclically modulated hopping and on-site potential parameters, which can be realized with ultracold bosonic atoms in a one-dimensional optical superlattice. We show that the interacting bosonic chain at half filling and in the deep Mott insulating regime can simulate bosonic Chern insulators with a topological phase diagram similar to that of the Haldane model of noninteracting fermions. Furthermore, we explore the topological properties of the ground state by calculating the many-body Chern number, the quasiparticle en…
We numerically investigate, using the time evolving block decimation algorithm, the quantum transport of ultra-cold bosonic atoms in a double well optical lattice through slow and periodic modulation of the lattice parameters (intra- and inter-well tunneling, chemical potential, etc.). The transport of atoms does not depend on the rate of change of the parameters (as along as the change is slow) and can distribute atoms in optical lattices at the quantized level without involving external forces. The transport of atoms depends on the atom filling in each double well and the interaction between…
$\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological insulators for photons and in general bosons cannot be strictly implemented because of the lack of symmetry-protected pseudospins. We show that the required protection can be provided by the real-space topological excitation of an interacting quantum fluid: quantum vortex. We consider a Bose-Einstein Condensate at the $Γ$ point of the Brillouin zone of a quantum valley Hall system based on two staggered honeycomb lattices. We demonstrate the existence of a coupling between the winding number of a vortex and the valley of the bulk Bloch band. This leads to chiral vort…
We consider the many-body spectra of interacting bosonic quantum fields on a lattice in the semiclassical limit of large particle number $N$. We show that the many-body density of states can be expressed as a coherent sum over oscillating long-wavelength contributions given by periodic, non-perturbative solutions of the, typically non-linear, wave equation of the classical (mean-field) limit. To this end we construct the semiclassical approximation for both the smooth and oscillatory part of the many-body density of states in terms of a trace formula starting from the exact path integral form …
We analyze the heating of interacting bosonic atoms in an optical lattice due to intensity fluctuations of the lasers forming the lattice. We focus in particular on fluctuations at low frequencies below the band gap frequency, such that the dynamics is restricted to the lowest band. We derive stochastic equations of motion, and analyze the effects on different many-body states, characterizing heating processes in both strongly and weakly interacting regimes. In the limit where the noise spectrum is flat at low frequencies, we can derive an effective Master equation describing the dynamics. We …
We investigate topological charge pumping in a system of interacting bosons in the tight-binding limit, described by the Rice-Mele model. An appropriate topological invariant for the many-body case is the change of polarization per pump cycle, which we compute for various interaction strengths from infinite-size matrix-product-state simulations. We verify that the charge pumping remains quantized as long as the pump cycle avoids the superfluid phase. In the limit of hardcore bosons, the quantized pumped charge can be understood from single-particle properties such as the integrated Berry curva…
In this work we study the particle conductance of a strongly interacting Fermi gas through a quantum point contact. With an atom-molecule two-channel model, we compute the contribution to particle conductance by both the fermionic atoms and the bosonic molecules using the Keldysh formalism. Focusing on the regime above the Fermi superfluid transition temperature, we find that the fermionic contribution to the conductance is reduced by interaction compared with the quantized value for the non-interacting case; while the bosonic contribution to the conductance exhibits a plateau with non-univers…
Interacting bosonic atoms under strong gauge fields undergo a series of phase transitions that take the cloud from a simple Bose-Einstein condensate all the way to a family of fractional-quantum-Hall-type states [M. Popp, B. Paredes, and J. I. Cirac, Phys. Rev. A 70, 053612 (2004)]. In this work we demonstrate that the Hall response of the atoms can be used to locate the phase transitions and characterize the ground state of the many-body state. Moreover, the same response function reveals within some regions of the parameter space, the structure of the spectrum and the allowed transitions to …
We propose and investigate a scheme for engineering a synthetic thermal bath for a bosonic quantum gas in a one-dimensional optical lattice based on Markovian feedback control. The performance of our scheme is quantified by the fidelity between the steady state of the system and the effective thermal state. For double-well and triple-well systems with non-interacting particles, the steady state is found to be an exact thermal state, which is attributed to the fact that the transfer rates between all pairs of coupled eigenstates satisfy detailed balance condition. The scenario changes when ther…
All-order momentum correlation functions associated with the time-of-flight spectroscopy of three spinless ultracold bosonic interacting neutral atoms confined in a linear three-well optical trap are presented. The underlying Hamiltonian employed for the interacting atoms is an augmented three-site Hubbard model. Our investigations target matter-wave interference of massive particles, aiming at the establishment of experimental protocols for characterizing the quantum states of trapped attractively or repulsively interacting ultracold particles, with variable interaction strength. The manifest…
Bose-Einstein condensates loaded in one-dimensional bichromatic optical lattices with constituent sublattices having incommensurate periods is considered. Using the rational approximations for the incommensurate periods, we show that below the mobility edge the localized states are distributed nearly homogeneously in the space and explore the versatility of such potentials. We show that superposition of symmetric and anti-symmetric localized can be used to simulate various physical dynamical regimes, known to occur in double-well and multi-well traps. As examples, we obtain an alternative real…
We study the phase transitions of bosonic $ν=1/2$ fractional quantum Hall (FQH) effect in different topological lattice models under the interplay of onsite periodic potential and Hubbard repulsion. Through exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group methods, we demonstrate that the many-body ground state undergoes a continuous phase transition between bosonic FQH liquid and a trivial (Mott) insulator induced by the periodic potential, characterized by the smooth crossover of energy and entanglement entropy. When the Hubbard repulsion decreases, we claim that this bosonic FQ…
We show that for ultra-cold neutral bosonic atoms held in a three-dimensional periodic potential or optical lattice, a Hubbard model with dominant, attractive three-body interactions can be generated. In fact, we derive that the effect of pair-wise interactions can be made small or zero starting from the realization that collisions occur at the zero-point energy of an optical lattice site and the strength of the interactions is energy dependent from effective-range contributions. We determine the strength of the two- and three-body interactions for scattering from van-der-Waals potentials and …

The interplay between spontaneous symmetry breaking in many-body systems, the wavelike nature of quantum particles and lattice effects produces an extraordinary behavior of the chiral current of bosonic particles in the presence of a uniform magnetic flux defined on a two-leg ladder. While non-interacting as well as strongly interacting particles, stirred by the magnetic field, circulate along the system's boundary in the counterclockwise direction in the ground state, interactions stabilize vortex lattices. These states break translational symmetry, which can lead to a reversal of the circula…
We develop a self-contained approach to bosonization and refermionization using the Keldysh functional integral. Starting from fermionic particles, we bosonize the system and obtain a description in terms of the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid, with, in addition, an infinite series of interaction terms arising from the curvature of the fermionic particle spectrum. We explicitly calculate the leading interaction term and check its consistency with a different approach based on the Matsubara framework, within which we calculate the second leading interaction term, as well. Moreover, we bosonize weakly…
We have created a triply quantum degenerate mixture of bosonic $^{41}$K and two fermionic species $^{40}$K and $^6$Li. The boson is shown to be an efficient coolant for the two fermions, spurring hopes for the observation of fermionic superfluids with imbalanced masses. We observe multiple heteronuclear Feshbach resonances, in particular a wide s-wave resonance for the combination $^{41}$K-$^{40}$K, opening up studies of strongly interacting {\it isotopic} Bose-Fermi mixtures. For large imbalance, we enter the polaronic regime of dressed impurities immersed in a bosonic or fermionic bath.
We derive the two-dimensional equation of state for a bosonic system of ultracold atoms interacting with a finite-range effective interaction. Within a functional integration approach, we employ an hydrodynamic parametrization of the bosonic field to calculate the superfluid equations of motion and the zero-temperature pressure. The ultraviolet divergences, naturally arising from the finite-range interaction, are regularized with an improved dimensional regularization technique.
We propose a new field theoretic method for calculating Renyi entropy of a sub-system of many interacting Bosons without using replica methods. This method is applicable to dynamics of both open and closed quantum systems starting from arbitrary initial conditions. Our method identifies the Wigner characteristic of a reduced density matrix with the partition function of the whole system with a set of linear sources turned on only in the subsystem and uses this to calculate the subsystem's Renyi entropy. We use this method to study evolution of Renyi entropy in a non-interacting open quantum sy…
Flux ladders constitute the minimal setup enabling a systematic understanding of the rich physics of interacting particles subjected simultaneously to strong magnetic fields and a lattice potential. In this paper, the ground-state phase diagram of a flux-ladder model is mapped out using extensive density-matrix renormalization-group simulations. The emphasis is put on parameters which can be experimentally realized exploiting the internal states of potassium atoms as a synthetic dimension. The focus is on accessible observables such as the chiral current and the leg-population imbalance. Consi…
We analyze the dynamical and energetic instabilities of spin currents in a system of two-component bosons in an optical lattice, with a particular focus on the Neel state. We consider both the weakly interacting superfluid and the strongly interacting Mott insulating limits as well as the regime near the superfluid-insulator transition and establish the criteria for the onset of these instabilities. We use Bogoliubov theory to treat the weakly interacting superfluid regime. Near the Mott transition, we calculate the stability phase diagram within a variational Gutzwiller wavefunction approach.…
We study possible many body phenomena in the Quantum Anomalous Hall system of weakly interacting spinor bosons in a square lattice. There are various novel spin-bond correlated superfluids (SF) and quantum or topological phase transitions among these SF phases. One transition is a first order one driven by roton droppings ( but with non-zero gaps $ Δ_R $ ) tuned by the Zeeman field $ h $. Another is a second order bosonic Lifshitz transition with the dynamic exponents $ z_x=z_y=2 $ and an accompanying $ [C_4 \times C_4]_D $ symmetry breaking. It is driven by the softening of the superfluid Gol…
A paradigm model of modern atom optics is studied, strongly interacting ultracold bosons in an optical lattice. This many-body system can be artificially opened in a controlled manner by modern experimental techniques. We present results based on a non-hermitian effective Hamiltonian whose quantum spectrum is analyzed. The direct access to the spectrum of the metastable many-body system allows us to easily identify relatively stable quantum states, corresponding to previously predicted solitonic many-body structures.
An approach is proposed to analyze an interacting bosonic system using two-time temperature Green's functions on the collective variables. Two systems are studied: liquid helium-4 and the Yukawa Bose-liquid being a model of the nuclear matter. The suggested decoupling in the equations of motion for Green's functions yields a good description of the elementary excitation spectrum in the long-wavelength limit.
We use optical images of a superfluid consisting of a weakly interacting Bose-Einstein condensate of sodium atoms to investigate the structure of quantized three-dimensional vortex filaments. We find that the measured optical contrast and the width of the vortex core quantitatively agree with the predictions of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation.
We study the ground-state physics of a single-component Haldane model on a hexagonal two-leg ladder geometry with a particular focus on strongly interacting bosonic particles. We concentrate our analysis on the regime of less than one particle per unit-cell. As a main result, we observe several Meissner-like and vortex-fluid phases both for a superfluid as well as a Mott-insulating background. Furthermore, we show that for strongly interacting bosonic particles an unconventional vortex-lattice phase emerges, which is stable even in the regime of hardcore bosons. We discuss the mechanism for it…
In this paper, we study the homogeneous one-dimensional bosonic gas interacting via a repulsive contact potential by using the improved Gaussian approximation. We obtain the gapless excitation spectrum of Bogoliubov mode. Our result is in good agreement with the exact numerical calculation based on the Bethe ansatz. We speculate that the improved Gaussian approximation could be a quantitatively good approximation for higher dimensional systems.
We study the ground state of a large number N of 2D anyons in an external magnetic field. We consider a scaling limit where the statistics parameter $α$ tends to zero when N tends to infinity which allows the statistics to be seen as a "perturbation from the bosonic end". Our model is that of bosons in a magnetic field and interacting through long-range magnetic potential generated by magnetic charges carried by each particle, smeared over discs of radius R. Our method allows to take R tends to not too fast at the same time as N tends to infinity. We use the information theoretic version of th…
This article reviews the recent theoretical and experimental advances in the study of ultracold gases made of bosonic particles interacting via the long-range, anisotropic dipole-dipole interaction, in addition to the short-range and isotropic contact interaction usually at work in ultracold gases. The specific properties emerging from the dipolar interaction are emphasized, from the mean-field regime valid for dilute Bose-Einstein condensates, to the strongly correlated regimes reached for dipolar bosons in optical lattices.
We consider spectroscopies of strongly interacting atomic gases, and we propose a model for describing the coupling between quasiparticles and gapless phonon-like modes. Our model explains features in a wide range of different experiments in both fermionic and bosonic atom gases in various spectroscopic methods.
How and why may an interacting system of many particles be described assuming that all particles are independent and identically distributed ? This question is at least as old as statistical mechanics itself. Its quantum version has been rejuvenated by the birth of cold atoms physics. In particular the experimental creation of Bose-Einstein condensates directly asks the following variant: why and how can a large assembly of very cold interacting bosons (quantum particles deprived of the Pauli exclusion principle) all populate the same quantum state ? In this text I review the various mathemati…
