It is widely known that quantum spin Hall (QSH) insulator can be viewed as two copies of quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) insulator with opposite local magnetic moments. However, nearly every QSH insulator discovered so far is a nonmagnetic semiconductor. Due to the vanishing local magnetic moment of each copy, the QAH states only conceptually exist in these QSH insulators. In this work, we show a realistic construction of QSH states with finite local magnetic moment by staking bilayer QAH insulators. Our explicit construction benefits from an effective QAH model with a large topological gap and is further supported by a class of two-dimensional ferromagnetic materials. Our work not only validates the conceptual relationship of QSH and QAH but also provides an ideal material platform for realizing antiferromagnetic QSH state which is highly tunable between QAH and QSH states as a function of the number of layers.
Spin torque is a promising tool for driving magnetization dynamics for novel computing technologies. These torques can be easily produced by spin-orbit effects, but for most conventional spin source materials, a high degree of crystal symmetry limits the geometry of the spin torques produced. Magnetic ordering is one way to reduce the symmetry of a material and allow exotic torques, and antiferromagnets are particularly promising because they are robust against external fields. We present spin torque ferromagnetic resonance measurements and second harmonic Hall measurements characterizing the …
Experimental measurements of Raman spectra for hcp iron at high pressure show two modes over a considerable pressure range in contrast to the prediction of one doubly degenerate mode for the hcp lattice. We use density functional theory to investigate the influence of magnetic order on the Raman active modes of hcp iron. We find an antiferromagnetic state that lifts the degeneracy of the transverse optical mode, and yields stable antiferromagnetic moments up to approximately 60 GPa (55 Bohr$^3$). The resulting frequencies of the two transverse optical modes are in good agreement with the exper…
Understanding the interplay among different magnetic exchange interactions and its physical consequences, especially in the presence of itinerant electrons and disorders, remains one of the central themes in condensed matter physics. In this vein, the coupling between antiferromagnetic and spin glass orders may lead to large exchange bias, a property of potential broad technological applications. In this article, we report the coexistence of antiferromagnetic order and spin glass behaviors in a quasi-one-dimensional iron telluride TaFe$_{1+x}$Te$_3$ ($x$=0.25). Its antiferromagnetism is believ…
The first-principles electronic structure calculations made substantial contribution to study of high $T_c$ iron-pnictide superconductors. By the calculations, LaFeAsO was first predicted to be an antiferromagnetic semimetal, and the novel bi-collinear antiferromagnetic order was predicted for $α$-FeTe. Moreover, based on the calculations the underlying mechanism was proposed to be Arsenic-bridged antiferromagnetic superexchange interaction between the next-nearest neighbor Fe moments. In this article, this physical picture is further presented and discussed in association with the elaborate f…
The electronic structure of iron pnictides is topologically nontrivial, leading to the appearance of Dirac cones in the band structure for the antiferromagnetic phase. Motivated by the analogy with Dirac cones in graphene, we explore the possible existence of topologically protected surface states. Surprisingly, bands of surface states exist even in the paramagnetic state. A realistic five-orbital model predicts two such bands. In the antiferromagnetic phase, these surface bands survive but split. We obtain the bulk and surface dispersion from exact diagonalization of two- and five-orbital mod…
We report variational and fixed-node diffusion quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) calculations of anti-ferromagnetic iron oxide (FeO) in the ground state B1 crystal structure. The goal of this study was a systematic investigation of the sensitivity of several ground state properties to a variety of QMC wave function generation techniques including advanced wave functions such as multi-determinant expansions and backflow transformations. We found that the predicted lattice distortion was largely controlled by the choice of single particle orbitals used to construct the wave function, rather than by subs…
We have studied the newly found superconductor compound LaO$_{1-x}$F$_x$FeAs through the first-principles density functional theory calculations. We find that the parent compound LaOFeAs is a quasi-2-dimensional antiferromgnetic semimetal with most carriers being electrons and with a magnetic moment of $2.3μ_B$ located around each Fe atom on the Fe-Fe square lattice. Furthermore this is a commensurate antiferromagnetic spin density wave due to the Fermi surface nesting, which is robust against the F-doping. The observed superconduction happens on the Fe-Fe antiferromagnetic layer, suggesting a…
The ground state of K$_{0.8+x}$Fe$_{1.6+y}$Se$_2$ and other iron-based selenide superconductors are doped antiferromagnetic semiconductors. There are well defined iron local moments whose energies are separated from those of conduction electrons by a large band gap in these materials. We propose that the low energy physics of this system is governed by a model Hamiltonian of interacting electrons with on-site ferromagnetic exchange interactions and inter-site superexchange interactions. We have derived the effective pairing potential of electrons under the linear spin-wave approximation and sh…
We first analyze why the iron pnictides with high $T_c$ superconductivity so far are As-based, by the Hund's rule correlation picture, then examine the P-based and Sb-based cases, respectively. Consequently, we propose that CaClFeP with ZrCuSiAs-type structure is an As-free high $T_c$ iron-pnictide. The subsequent density functional theory calculations show that the ground state of CaClFeP is of a collinearly antiferromagnetic order on Fe moments with structural distortion, resulting from the interplay between the strong nearest and next-nearest neighbor antiferromagnetic superexchange interac…
We present a detailed ab initio study of the electronic structure and magnetic order of an Fe monolayer on the Ir(001) surface covered by adsorbed oxygen and hydrogen. The results are compared to the clean Fe/Ir(001) system, where recent intensive studies indicated a strong tendency towards an antiferromagnetic order and complex magnetic structures. The adsorption of an oxygen overlayer significantly increases interlayer distance between the Fe layer and the Ir substrate, while the effect of hydrogen is much weaker. We show that the adsorption of oxygen (and also of hydrogen) leads to a p(2$\t…
It has long been a challenging task to find compounds with similar crystal and electronic structures as cuprate superconductors with low dimensionality and strong antiferromagnetic fluctuations. The parent compounds of cuprate superconductors are Mott insulators with strong in-plane antiferromagnetic exchange interactions between Cu moments. Here we show, based on first-principles density functional calculations, that AFeSe2 (A=Tl, K, Rb, or Cs) exhibit many of the physical properties common to the cuprate parent compounds: (1) the FeSe2 layer in AFeSe2 is similar in crystalline and electronic…
A new oxide, sodium iron antimonate, Na2FeSbO5, was synthesized and structurally characterized, and its static and dynamic magnetic properties were comprehensively studied both experimentally by dc and ac magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, specific heat, electron spin resonance (ESR) and Moessbauer measurements, and theoretically by density functional calculations. The resulting single-crystal structure (a = 15.6991(9) A; b = 5.3323 (4) A; c = 10.8875(6) A; S.G. Pbna) consists of edge-shared SbO6 octahedral chains, which alternate with vertex-linked, magnetically active FeO4 tetrahedral c…
By the first-principles electronic structure calculations, we find that the ground state of ternary iron selenides AFe$_2$Se$_2$ (A=K, Cs, or Tl) is in a bi-collinear antiferromagnetic order, in which the Fe local moments ($\sim2.8μ_B$) align ferromagnetically along a diagonal direction and antiferromagnetically along the other diagonal direction on the Fe-Fe square lattice. This bi-collinear antiferromagnetic order results from the interplay among the nearest, the next nearest, and the next next nearest neighbor superexchange interactions, mediated by Se $4p$-orbitals.
Using a first principles based, magnetic tight-binding total energy model, the magnetization energy and moments are computed for various ordered spin configurations in the high pressure polymorphs of iron (fcc, or $γ$-Fe, and hcp, or $ε$-Fe), as well ferromagnetic bcc iron ($α$-Fe). For hcp, a non-collinear, antiferromagnetic, spin configuration that minimizes unfavorable ferromagnetic nearest neighbor ordering is the lowest energy state and is more stable than non-magnetic $ε$ iron up to about 75 GPa. Accounting for non-collinear magnetism yields better agreement with the experimental equatio…
High purity iron, which transforms into the hcp phase under pressure, has recently been reported to be superconducing in the pressure range 150-300 kBar [shim]. The electronic structure and the electron-phonon coupling ($λ_{ph}$) are calculated for hcp iron at different volumes. A parameter-free theory for calculating the coupling constants $λ_{sf}$ from ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) spin fluctuations is developed. The calculated $λ_{sf}$ are sufficiently large to explain superconductivity especially from FM fluctuations. The results indicate that superconductivity mediated by…
By the first-principles electronic structure calculations, we find that the ground state of the Fe-vacancies ordered TlFe$_{1.5}$Se$_2$ is a quasi-two-dimensional collinear antiferromagnetic semiconductor with an energy gap of 94 meV, in agreement with experimental measurements. This antiferromagnetic order is driven by the Se-bridged antiferromagnetic superexchange interactions between Fe moments. Similarly, we find that crystals AFe$_{1.5}$Se$_2$ (A=K, Rb, or Cs) are also antiferromagnetic semiconductors but with a zero-gap semiconducting state or semimetallic state nearly degenerated with t…
By means of the first-principle calculations, we have investigated electronic, magnetic properties and correlation effects for the newly discovered layered oxyselenide Na2Fe2Se2O. Our results reveal that the electron correlations in the Fe 3d bands promote a transition of Na2Fe2Se2O from magnetic metallic or half-metallic states to the antiferromagnetic Mott-insulating state. In addition, the bonding picture in Na2Fe2Se2O is described as an anisotropic mixture of ionic and covalent contributions.
THz magnetization dynamics is excited in ferrimagnetic thulium iron garnet with a picosecond, single-cycle magnetic field pulse and seen as a high-frequency modulation of the magneto-optical Faraday effect. Data analysis combined with numerical modelling and evaluation of the effective Lagrangian allow us to conclude that the dynamics corresponds to the exchange mode excited by Zeeman interaction of the THz field with the antiferromagnetically coupled spins. We argue that THz-pump IR-probe experiments on ferrimagnets offer a unique tool for quantitative studies of dynamics and mechanisms to co…
The finite-size effect on the antiferromagnetic (AF) transition and electronic configuration of iron has been observed in LiFePO4. Determination of the scaling behavior of the AF transition temperature (TN) versus the particle-size dimension (L) in the critical regime 1-TN(L)/TN(XTL)\simL^-1 reveals that the activation nature of the AF ordering strongly depends on the surface energy. In addition, the effective magnetic moment that reflects the electronic configuration of iron in LiFePO4 is found to be sensitive to the particle size. An alternative structural view based on the polyatomic ion gr…
We have studied the electronic and magnetic structures of the ternary iron arsenides AFe$_2$As$_2$ (A = Ba, Ca, or Sr) using the first-principles density functional theory. The ground states of these compounds are in a collinear antiferromagnetic order, resulting from the interplay between the nearest and the next-nearest neighbor superexchange antiferromagnetic interactions bridged by As $4p$ orbitals. The correction from the spin-orbit interaction to the band structure is small. The pressure can reduce dramatically the magnetic moment and diminish the collinear antiferromagnetic order. Based…
For submicron particles shaped as any axisymmetric body and made with standard canted antiferromagnet like hematite or iron borate, the ground state may comprise of a magnetic vortex with topologically non-trivial distribution of the sublattice magnetization $\vec{l}$ and planar coreless vortex-like structure for the net magnetization $\vec{M}$. For antiferromagnetic particles in the vortex state, in addition to low-frequency modes, there are high frequency modes with frequencies over the range of hundreds gigahertz, including a mode localized in the region of the radius 30-40 nm near a vortex…
The use of magnetic insulators is attracting a lot of interest due to a rich variety of spin-dependent phenomena with potential applications to spintronic devices. Here we report ultra-thin yttrium iron garnet (YIG) / gadolinium iron garnet (GdIG) insulating bilayers on gadolinium iron garnet (GGG). From spin Hall magnetoresistance (SMR) and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism measurements, we show that the YIG and GdIG magnetically couple antiparallel even in moderate in-plane magnetic fields. The results demonstrate an all-insulating equivalent of a synthetic antiferromagnet in a garnet-based …
Coexistence of phases, characterized by different electronic degrees of freedom, commonly occurs in layered superconductors. Among them, alkaline intercalated chalcogenides are model systems showing microscale coexistence of paramagnetic (PAR) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) phases, however, temporal behavior of different phases is still unknown. Here, we report the first visualization of the atomic motion in the granular phase of K$_{x}$Fe$_{2-y}$Se$_2$ using X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy. Unlike the PAR phase, the AFM texture reveals an intermittent dynamics with avalanches as in martens…
We report strong damping enhancement in a 200 nm thick yttrium iron garnet (YIG) film due to spin inhomogeneity at the interface. The growth-induced thin interfacial gadolinium iron garnet (GdIG) layer antiferromagnetically (AFM) exchange couples with the rest of the YIG layer. The out-of-plane angular variation of ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) linewidth $ΔH$ reflects a large inhomogeneous distribution of effective magnetization $Δ4 πM_{eff}$ due to the presence of an exchange springlike moments arrangement in YIG. We probe the spin inhomogeneity at the YIG-GdIG interface by performing an in-p…
We have studied electronic and magnetic structures of K$_{0.8+x}$Fe$_{1.6}$Se$_2$ by performing the first-principles electronic structure calculations. The ground state of the Fe-vacancies ordered K$_{0.8}$Fe$_{1.6}$Se$_2$ is found to be a quasi-two-dimensional blocked checkerboard antiferromagnetic (AFM) semiconductor with an energy gap of 594 meV and a large ordering magnetic moment of 3.37 $μ_B$ for each Fe atom, in excellent agreement with the neutron scattering measurement. The underlying mechanism is the chemical-bonding-driven tetramer lattice distortion. K$_{0.8+x}$Fe$_{1.6}$Se$_2$ wit…
Here we consider micron-sized samples with any axisymmetric body shape and made with a canted antiferromagnet, like hematite or iron borate. We find that its ground state can be a magnetic vortex with a topologically non-trivial distribution of the sublattice magnetization $\vec{l}$ and planar coreless vortex-like structure for the net magnetization $\vec{M}$. For antiferromagnetic samples in the vortex state, in addition to low-frequency modes, we find high-frequency modes with frequencies over the range of hundreds of gigahertz, including a mode localized in a region of radius $\sim$ 30--40 …
Magnon-polarons, a type of hybridized excitations between magnons and phonons, were first reported in yttrium iron garnet as anomalies in the spin Seebeck effect responses. Here we report an observation of antiferromagnetic (AFM) magnon-polarons in a uniaxial AFM insulator Cr2O3. Despite the relatively higher energy of magnon than that of the acoustic phonons, near the spin-flop transition of ~ 6 T, the left-handed magnon spectrum shifts downward to hybridize with the acoustic phonons to form AFM magnon-polarons, which can also be probed by the spin Seebeck effect. The spin Seebeck signal is f…
We examine the appearance of a spin density wave in the FeAs parent compounds due to an excitonic instability. Using a realistic four-band model, we show that the magnetic state depends very sensitively upon the details of the band structure. We demonstrate that an orthorhombic distortion of the crystal enhances the stability of the antiferromagnetic order.
Using linear-response density-functional theory, we obtain the magnetic interactions in the several iron pnictides. The ground state has been found to be non-collinear in FeSe, with a large continuum of nearly degenerate states lying very close to the magnetic "striped" structure. The presence of non-collinearity also seems to be a generic feature of iron pnictides when the Fe moment is small. At small R_{Fe-Se} the system is itinerant: strong frustration give rise to excess of spin entropy, long ranged interactions create incommensurate orderings and strong biquadratic (or ring) couplings vio…
The inherent existence of multi phases in iron oxide nanostructures highlights the significance of them being investigated deliberately to understand and possibly control the phases. Here, the effects of annealing at 250 0C with a variable duration on the bulk magnetic and structural properties of high aspect ratio bi-phase iron oxide nanorods with ferrimagnetic Fe3O4 and antiferromagnetic alpha-Fe2O3 is explored. Increasing annealing time under a free flow of oxygen enhanced the alpha-Fe2O3 volume fraction, and improved the crystallinity of the Fe3O4 phase, identified in changes in the magnet…
The recent discovery of superconductivity in BaFe$_2$S$_3$ [Takahashi {\it et al.}, Nat. Mater. {\bf 14}, 1008 (2015)] has stimulated considerable interest in 123-type iron chalcogenides. This material is the first reported iron-based two-leg ladder superconductor, as opposed to the prevailing two-dimensional layered structures of the iron superconductors family. Once the hydrostatic pressure exceeds $11$ GPa, BaFe$_2$S$_3$ changes from a semiconductor to a superconductor below $24$~K. Although previous calculations correctly explained its ground state magnetic state and electronic structure, …
In a bilayer of ferromagnetic and non-magnetic metal, spin pumping can be generated by a thermal gradient. The spin current generation depends on the spin mixing conductance of the interface and the magnetic properties of the ferromagnetic layer. Due to its low intrinsic damping, rare earth iron garnet is often used for the ferromagnetic layer in the spin Seebeck experiment. However, it is actually a ferrimagnetic with antiferromagnetically coupled magnetic lattices and the contribution of rare earth magnetic lattice of rare earth iron garnet on thermal spin pumping is not well understand. Her…
By applying density functional theory, we find strong evidence for an itinerant nature of magnetism in two families of iron pnictides. Furthermore, by employing dynamical mean field theory with continuous time quantum Monte Carlo as an impurity solver, we observe that the antiferromagnetic metal with small magnetic moment naturally arises out of coupling between unfrustrated and frustrated bands. Our results point to a possible scenario for magnetism in iron pnictides where magnetism originates from a strong instability at the momentum vector ($π$, $π$, $π$) while it is reduced by quantum fluc…
The discovery of superconductivity in the two-leg ladder compound BaFe$_2$S$_3$ has established the 123-type iron chalcogenides as a novel and interesting subgroup of the iron-based superconductors family. However, in this 123 series, BaFe$_2$Se$_3$ is an exceptional member, with a magnetic order and crystalline structure different from all others. Recently, an exciting experiment reported the emergence of superconductivity in BaFe$_2$Se$_3$ at high pressure [J.-J. Ying, et al., Phys. Rev. B 95, 241109 (R) (2017)]. In this publication, we report a first principles study of BaFe$_2$Se$_3$. Our …
We have studied the pressure effect on electronic structures and magnetic orders of ternary iron selenide K$_{0.8}$Fe$_{1.6}$Se$_2$ by the first-principles electronic structure calculations. At low pressure, the compound is in the blocked checkerboard antiferromagnetic (AFM) semiconducting phase, as observed by the neutron scatting measurements. Applying pressure induces two phase transitions, first from the blocked checkerboard AFM semiconducting phase to a collinear AFM metallic phase around 12 GPa, and then to a non-magnetic metallic phase around 25 GPa, respectively. Our results help to cl…
