Numerous infinite dimensional dynamical systems arising in different fields have been shown to exhibit a gradient flow structure in the Wasserstein space. We construct Two Point Flux Approximation Finite Volume schemes discretizing such problems which preserve the variational structure and have second order accuracy in space. We propose an interior point method to solve the discrete variational problem, providing an efficient and robust algorithm. We present two applications to test the scheme and show its order of convergence.
In this paper, we deal with numerical approximations for solving the Black-Scholes Partial Differential Equation (PDE). This PDE is well known to be degenerated. The space discretization is performed using the classical finite volume method with Two-Point Flux Approximation (TPFA) and a novel scheme called fitted Two-Point Flux Approximation (TPFA).The fitted Two-Point Flux Approximation (TPFA) combines the fitted finite volume method and the standard TPFA method. More precisely the fitted finite volume method is used when the stock price approaches zero in order to handle the degeneracy of th…
We construct Two-Point Flux Approximation (TPFA) finite volume schemes to solve the quadratic optimal transport problem in its dynamic form, namely the problem originally introduced by Benamou and Brenier. We show numerically that these type of discretizations are prone to form instabilities in their more natural implementation, and we propose a variation based on nested meshes in order to overcome these issues. Despite the lack of strict convexity of the problem, we also derive quantitative estimates on the convergence of the method, at least for the discrete potential and the discrete cost. …
In this contribution we analyze the large time behavior of a family of nonlinear finite volume schemes for anisotropic convection-diffusion equations set in a bounded bidimensional domain and endowed with either Dirichlet and / or no-flux boundary conditions. We show that solutions to the two-point flux approximation (TPFA) and discrete duality finite volume (DDFV) schemes under consideration converge exponentially fast toward their steady state. The analysis relies on discrete entropy estimates and discrete functional inequalities. As a biproduct of our analysis, we establish new discrete Poi…
We propose a variational finite volume scheme to approximate the solutions to Wasserstein gradient flows. The time discretization is based on an implicit linearization of the Wasserstein distance expressed thanks to Benamou-Brenier formula, whereas space discretization relies on upstream mobility two-point flux approximation finite volumes. Our scheme is based on a first discretize then optimize approach in order to preserve the variational structure of the continuous model at the discrete level. Our scheme can be applied to a wide range of energies, guarantees non-negativity of the discrete s…
The context of this paper is the simulation of parameter-dependent partial differential equations (PDEs). When the aim is to solve such PDEs for a large number of parameter values, Reduced Basis Methods (RBM) are often used to reduce computational costs of a classical high fidelity code based on Finite Element Method (FEM), Finite Volume (FVM) or Spectral methods. The efficient implementation of most of these RBM requires to modify this high fidelity code, which cannot be done, for example in an industrial context if the high fidelity code is only accessible as a "black-box" solver. The Non In…
In 1994, Nessyahu, Tadmor and Tassa studied convergence rates of monotone finite volume approximations of conservation laws. For compactly supported, $\Lip^+$-bounded initial data they showed a first-order convergence rate in the Wasserstein distance. Our main result is to prove that this rate is optimal. We further provide numerical evidence indicating that the rate in the case of $\Lip^+$-unbounded initial data is worse than first-order.
We address the discretization of two-phase Darcy flows in a fractured and deformable porous medium, including frictional contact between the matrix-fracture interfaces. Fractures are described as a network of planar surfaces leading to the so-called mixed- or hybrid-dimensional models. Small displacements and a linear elastic behavior are considered for the matrix. Phase pressures are supposed to be discontinuous at matrix-fracture interfaces, as they provide a better accuracy than continuous pressure models even for high fracture permeabilities. The general gradient discretization framework i…
We consider a two-phase Darcy flow in a fractured porous medium consisting in a matrix flow coupled with a tangential flow in the fractures, described as a network of planar surfaces. This flow model is also coupled with the mechanical deformation of the matrix assuming that the fractures are open and filled by the fluids, as well as small deformations and a linear elastic constitutive law. The model is discretized using the gradient discretization method [26], which covers a large class of conforming and non conforming schemes. This framework allows for a generic convergence analysis of the c…
We consider a two-phase Darcy flow in a fractured and deformable porous medium for which the fractures are described as a network of planar surfaces leading to so-called hybrid-dimensional models. The fractures are assumed open and filled by the fluids and small deformations with a linear elastic constitutive law are considered in the matrix. As opposed to [10], the phase pressures are not assumed continuous at matrix fracture interfaces, which raises new challenges in the convergence analysis related to the additional interfacial equations and unknowns for the flow. As shown in [16, 2], unlik…

We study the numerical approximation of the invariant measure of a viscous scalar conservation law, one-dimensional and periodic in the space variable, and stochastically forced with a white-in-time but spatially correlated noise. The flux function is assumed to be locally Lipschitz continuous and to have at most polynomial growth. The numerical scheme we employ discretises the SPDE according to a finite-volume method in space, and a split-step backward Euler method in time. As a first result, we prove the well-posedness as well as the existence and uniqueness of an invariant measure for both …

We consider finite-volume approximations of Fokker-Planck equations on bounded convex domains in $\mathbb{R}^d$ and study the corresponding gradient flow structures. We reprove the convergence of the discrete to continuous Fokker-Planck equation via the method of Evolutionary $Γ$-convergence, i.e., we pass to the limit at the level of the gradient flow structures, generalising the one-dimensional result obtained by Disser and Liero. The proof is of variational nature and relies on a Mosco convergence result for functionals in the discrete-to-continuum limit that is of independent interest. Our…
The dynamical formulation of optimal transport, also known as Benamou-Brenier formulation or Computational Fluid Dynamics formulation, amounts to write the optimal transport problem as the optimization of a convex functional under a PDE constraint, and can handle \emph{a priori} a vast class of cost functions and geometries. Several discretizations of this problem have been proposed, leading to computations on flat spaces as well as Riemannian manifolds, with extensions to mean field games and gradient flows in the Wasserstein space. In this article, we provide a framework which guarantees con…
