The frequency dependence of conductivity in In$_4$Se$_3$, pure and with copper admixture crystals, in the region of nitrogen temperatures is investigated. It was found out that variable length hops on the localized levels in the vicinity of Fermi level is pre-dominant mechanism of charge transfer in the crystals. For pure In$ _4$Se$ _3$ crystals the density of localized states is $10^{17}-10^{18}$ eV$^{-1}\cdot$cm$^{-3}$, the mean hop length is 220--350 Å. The reasons for the occurrence of localized states are considered within the model of a layered crystal as a quasi-disordered system.
The phonon dispersion, density of states, Grüneisen parameters, and the lattice thermal conductivity of single- and multi-layered boron nitride were calculated using first-principles methods. For the bulk {\it h}-BN we also report the two-phonon density of states. We also present simple analytical solutions to the acoustic vibrational mode-dependent lattice thermal conductivity. Moreover, computations based on the elaborate Callaway-Klemens and the real space super cell methods are presented to calculate the sample length and temperature dependent lattice thermal conductivity of single- and mu…
In-plane thermal conductivity of the thermoelectric layered cobalt oxides has been measured using the Harman method, in which thermal conductivity is obtained from temperature gradient induced by applied current. We have found that the charge reservoir block (the block other than the CoO$_2$ block) dominates the thermal conduction, where a nano-block integration concept is effective for material design. We have further found that the thermal conductivity shows a small but finite in-plane anisotropy between $a$ and $b$ axes, which can be ascribed to the misfit structure.
The contour integration technique applied to calculate the optical conductivity tensor at finite temperatures in the case of layered systems within the framework of the spin-polarized relativistic screened Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker band structure method is improved from the computational point of view by applying the Gauss-Konrod quadrature for the integrals along the different parts of the contour and by designing a cumulative special points scheme for two-dimensional Brillouin zone integrals corresponding to cubic systems.
High performance thermoelectric devices requires materials with low lattice thermal conductivities. Many strategies, such as phonon engineering, have been made to reduce lattice thermal conductivity without simultaneously decrease of the charge transport performance. It is a simple and effective approach to use materials with heavy element to reduce the lattice thermal conductivity. Here, based on the first-principles calculations and phonon Boltzmann transport equations, we find the replacement of Zr with heavy element Hf in ZrNCl doesn't reduce the lattice thermal conductivity, instead, it s…
Molecular dynamics simulations combined with periodic electronic structure calculations are performed to decipher structural, thermodynamical and dynamical properties of the interfaced vs. confined water adsorbed in hexagonal 1D channels of the 2D layered electrically conductive Cu3(HHTP)2 and Cu3(HTTP)2 metal-organic frameworks (HHTP=2,3,6,7,10,11-hexahydroxytriphenylene and HTTP = 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexathiotriphenylene). Comparing water adsorption in bulk vs. slab models of the studied 2D MOFs shows that water is preferentially adsorbed on the framework walls via forming hydrogen bonds to the or…
We prepared polycrystalline samples of the A_xBO_2 type layered oxides Na_0.77MnO_2 and LiCoO_2, and measured thermal conductivity from 15 to 280 K. Na0.77MnO_2 shows a low thermal conductivity of 15 mW/cmK, while LiCoO_2 shows a much higher value of 40 mW/cmK at 280 K. By comparing them with the data of NaCo_2O_4, we have found that the low thermal conductivity of A_xBO_2 comes essentially from the A-ion deficiency, not from the layered structure itself.
To elucidate the relationship between a crystal's structure, its thermal conductivity, and its phonon dispersion characteristics, an analysis is conducted on layered diatomic Lennard-Jones crystals with various mass ratios. Lattice dynamics theory and molecular dynamics simulations are used to predict the phonon dispersion curves and the thermal conductivity. The layered structure generates directionally dependent thermal conductivities lower than those predicted by density trends alone. The dispersion characteristics are quantified using a set of novel band diagram metrics, which are used to …
Transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) alloys have attracted great interests in recent years due to their tunable electronic properties, especially the semiconductor-metal phase transition, along with their potential applications in solid-state memories and thermoelectrics. However, the thermal conductivity of layered two-dimensional (2D) TMD alloys remains largely unexplored despite that it plays a critical role in the reliability and functionality of TMD-enabled devices. In this work, we study the temperature-dependent anisotropic thermal conductivity of the phase-transition 2D TMD alloys WSe…
First-principles calculations are employed to investigate the phonon transport of BiCuOSe. Our calculations reproduce the lattice thermal conductivity of BiCuOSe. The calculated gruneisen parameter is 2.4~2.6 at room temperature, a fairly large value indicating a strong anharmonicity in BiCuOSe, which leads to its ultralow lattice thermal conductivity. The contribution to total thermal conductivity from high-frequency optical phonons, which are mostly contributed by the vibrations of O atoms, is larger than 1/3, remarkably different from the usual picture with very little contribution from hig…
Conductive and paintable inks of 2D layered MoS2 with aspect ratio-dependent conductivity are demonstrated. Using ultrasonically assisted solvent-exfoliation of MoS2, high concentration 2D and few-layer suspensions become inks that provide coherent films when painted. Conductivity of paintable 2D MoS2 inks can be modulated by length and width, where the conductivity is linked to the painting direction. Reducing the painted film width, increases conductivity for similar length, and the films conductivity is aspect ratio-dependent. Inks of solvent-exfoliated 2D MoS2 can be painted without polyme…
The single phase polycrystalline Ba1/4Sr3/4MnO3 layered perovskite manganite has been synthesized by combustion method having various crystallite sizes. The room temperature X-ray diffraction patterns reveal that Ba1/4Sr3/4MnO3 crystallizes into hexagonal crystal structure with space group P63/mmc as confirmed by Rietveld refinement. The scanning electron micrographs of Ba1/4Sr3/4MnO3 reveal uniform crystallite size of the samples. Effect of crystallite size on lattice strain and crystal structure has been studied using Rietveld refinement and Williamson-Hall plot, respectively. The structural…
The excitonic radiative recombination of intercalated Cl2 molecules for two different polytypes 2H-MoS2 and 3R-MoS2 layered crystals are presented. The structure of the excitonic emission is unique and provides a robust experimental signature of crystal polytype investigated. This result is confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis and DFT electronic band structure calculations. Thus, the bound exciton emission provides a nondestructive fingerprint for the reliable identification of the polytype of MoS2 layered crystals.
Understanding the interplay between various design strategies (for instance, bonding heterogeneity and lone pair induced anharmonicity) to achieve ultralow lattice thermal conductivity ($κ_l$) is indispensable for discovering novel functional materials for thermal energy applications. In the present study, we investigate layered PbXF (X = Cl, Br, I), which offers bonding heterogeneity through the layered crystal structure, anharmonicity through the Pb$^{2+}$ $6s^2$ lone pair, and phonon softening through the mass difference between F and Pb/X. The weak inter-layer van der Waals bonding and the…
The ionic conduction properties of the technologically important two-dimensional (2D) layered battery material Na2Mn3O7, with exceptional small-voltage hysteresis between charge and discharge curves, have been investigated as a function of temperature and frequency by an impedance spectroscopy. The detailed analyses of the impedance data in the form of dc-conductivity, ac-conductivity, electrical modulus, dielectric constant and complex polarizability reveal a long-range Na-ionic conductivity with negligible contribution from a local dipole relaxation. A significant enhancement (~10^4 times) o…
In the design of materials with low lattice thermal conductivity, compounds with high density, low speed of sound, and complexity at either the atomic, nano- or microstructural level are preferred. The layered compound Mg$_3$Sb$_2$ defies these prevailing paradigms, exhibiting lattice thermal conductivity comparable to PbTe and Bi$_2$Te$_3$, despite its low density and simple structure. The excellent thermoelectric performance ($zT$ $\sim$ 1.5) in $n$-type Mg$_3$Sb$_2$ has thus far been attributed to its multi-valley conduction band, while its anomalous thermal properties have been largely ove…
We analyze the anisotropic electrical and thermal transport measurements in single crystals of In2Te5 belonging to monoclinic space group C12 c1 with the temperature gradient applied parallel and perpendicular to the crystallographic c-axis of the crystals. The thermal conductivity along the c-axis thermal conductivity parallel was found to smaller by a factor of 2 compared to the thermal conductivity along the direction perpendicular to the c-axis over the entire temperature range. In contrast, the Seebeck coefficient along the c-axis parallel was found to be higher than its value along the d…
The valence band offsets (VBO) for the \b{eta}-type A3B6 layered compounds depending on the thickness of the crystals have been investigated from the first principles, based on the density functional theory. To simulate the structure of a given thickness the periodic slab model was used. Two adjacent crystal slabs consisting of several layers were separated by a vacuum region of two-layer width. It is shown that at the crystal thickness more than 12 layers, photothreshold practically becomes independent on the thickness of the crystal.
We calculated the optical properties of an $N$-layer graphene by formulating the dynamical conductivity of each layer. This is the conductivity when an electromagnetic field is localized at a particular layer and differs from the standard conductivity calculated assuming a uniform field throughout all layers. By combining these conductivities with a transfer matrix method, we took into account the spatial variation of the electromagnetic field caused by internal reflections. The results obtained from the two conductivities show that similar peak structures originating from the interlayer elect…
With the miniaturization and integration of nanoelectronic devices, efficient heat removal becomes a key factor affecting the reliable operation of the nanoelectronic device. With the high intrinsic thermal conductivity, good mechanical flexibility, and precisely controlled growth, two-dimensional (2D) materials are widely accepted as ideal candidates for thermal management materials. In this work, by solving the phonon Boltzmann transport equation (BTE) based on first-principles calculations, we comprehensively investigated the thermal conductivity of novel 2D layered MSi$_2$N$_4$ (M = Mo, W)…
The growth of single crystals of MoS2 and WS2 by materials transport through a liquid salt flux made from a low melting mixture of NaCl and CsCl is described. The crystals are characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction, which reveals that they are 2H-MoS2 with a small percentage (about 3%) of 3R intergrowths. The 2H-WS2 crystals display less than 1% of 3R intergrowths. Photoluminescence spectra of exfoliated monolayers suggest that MoS2 grown by this method has superior crystallinity in comparison to commercially-available MoS2 crystals.
Herein a genetic algorithm for optimising the design of layered 2D heterostructure is proposed. As a proof-of-concept it is applied to Sb$_2$Te$_3$-GeTe phase-change material superlattices, and the resulting lowest energy structure is grown experimentally. The similarity of the computational and experimental structures is verified with the comparison of XRD spectra. The structure is found to be within 0.92 meV/at. from the energetically most favorable known structure for Ge$_2$Sb$_2$Te$_5$.
Inspired by the recent first-principles calculations showing the high thermoelectric performance of layered pnictogen chalcogenides, we experimentally characterise the crystal structure and high-temperature transport properties of the layered antimony selenides REOSbSe2 (RE = La, Ce). The crystal structure of REOSbSe2 was the tetragonal P4/nmm space group, consisting of alternate stacks of SbSe2 and REO layers. These two compounds were n-type semiconductors. The optical band gaps of LaOSbSe2 and CeOSbSe2 were evaluated to be 1.0 and 0.6 eV, respectively. The room-temperature thermal conductivi…
The temperature dependent crystal structure analysis in martensitic phase of Ni_2Mn_(1+x)Sn_(1-x) (x = 0.40 and 0.44) magnetic shape memory alloy is performed using X-ray diffraction. The martensitic phase consists of 4-Layered and 14-Layered orthorhombic structure. The phase fraction of 4-layered and 14-layered orthorhombic structure change with temperature. Interestingly, the magnetic property also changes with temperature and corresponds to structural change temperature. Thus, the exchange coupling constant between original Mn and substituted Mn is calculated, which shows that the 4-layered…
We predict high thermoelectric efficiency in the layered perovskite La$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$, based on calculations (mostly ab-initio) of the electronic structure, transport coefficients, and thermal conductivity in a wide temperature range. The figure of merit $ZT$ computed with a temperature-dependent relaxation time increases monotonically from just above 1 at room temperature to over 2.5 at 1200 K, at an optimal carrier density of around 10$^{20}$ cm$^{-3}$. The Seebeck thermopower coefficient is between 200 and 300 $μ$V/K at optimal doping, but can reach nearly 1 mV/K at low doping. Much of the …
We use a magnetothermal resistance method to measure lattice thermal conductivity of pure single crystal metals over a wide range of temperatures. Large transverse magnetic fields are applied to suppress electronic thermal conduction. The total thermal conductivity and the electrical conductivity are measured as functions of applied magnetic field. The lattice thermal conductivity is then extracted by extrapolating the thermal conductivity versus electrical conductivity curve at zero electrical conductivity. We used this method to experimentally measure the lattice thermal conductivity and Lor…
Na-ion conduction, and correlations between Na-ion conduction pathways and crystal structure have been investigated as a function of temperature in the layered battery material Na2Ni2TeO6 by impedance spectroscopy and neutron diffraction, respectively. The impedance data reveal an ionic conductivity 2x10-4 S/m at 323 K which strongly enhances with increasing temperature and attains a high value of ~ 0.03 S/m at 423 K. The temperature dependent conductivity data show an Arrhenius type behavior with average activation energy (Ea) of ~ 0.58(3) eV for T > 383 K. By employing soft-bond valence sum …

Computational searching and screening of new functional materials exploiting earth abundant elements can accelerate developments of their energy applications. Based on a state-of-the-art materials search algorithm and ab initio calculations, we demonstrate a recently suggested stable silicon oxide with a layered structure (Si$_{3}$O) as an ideal photovoltaic material. With many-body first-principles approaches, the monolayer and layered bulk of Si$_{3}$O show direct quasiparticle gaps of 1.85 eV and 1.25 eV, respectively, while an optical gap of about 1.2 eV is nearly independent of the number…
The thermal conductivities of beta-Ga2O3 single crystals along four different crystal directions were measured in the temperature range of 80-495K using the time domain thermoreflectance (TDTR) method. A large anisotropy was found. At room temperature, the [010] direction has the highest thermal conductivity of 27.0+/-2.0 W/mK, while that along the [100] direction has the lowest value of 10.9+/-1.0 W/mK. At high temperatures, the thermal conductivity follows a ~1/T relationship characteristic of Umklapp phonon scattering, indicating phonon-dominated heat transport in the \b{eta}-Ga2O3 crystal.…
Nanostructured materials have emerged as an alternative to enhance the figure of merit (ZT) of thermoelectric (TE) devices. Graphene exhibits a high electrical conductivity (in-plane) that is necessary for a high ZT; however, this effect is countered by its impressive thermal conductivity. In this work TE layered devices composed of electrochemically exfoliated graphene (EEG) and a phonon blocking material such as poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS), polyaniline (PANI) and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) at the interface were prepared. The figure of merit, ZT, of each…
The group IV-VI compound SnSe, with an orthorhombic lattice structure, has recently attracted particular interest due to its unexpectedly low thermal conductivity and high power factor, showing great promise for thermoelectric applications. SnSe displays intriguing anisotropic properties due to the puckered low-symmetry in-plane lattice structure. Low-dimensional materials have potential advantages in improving the efficiency of thermoelectric conversion, due to the increased power factor and decreased thermal conductivity. A complete study of the optical and electrical anisotropies of SnSe na…
The layered perovskite YBaCuFeO5 (YBCFO) is able to adopt chiral magnetic order up to unexpectedly high temperatures, paving the way to strong magnetoelectric coupling at room temperature. In this perovskite A-site cations are fully ordered whereas the occupancy of the B-sites strongly depend on the preparation process. Though the structure is not geometrically frustrated, the presence of partial Fe3+/Cu2+ disorder at the B-sites produces magnetic frustration. In an effort to increase the spin-orbit coupling in the system, we have synthesized and studied YBaCuFe0.95Mn0.05O5 in single crystal f…
The preparation of mixed crystals of NaBr and KBr from melt as well as their physical characterization have been reported. Electrical measurements were carried out at various temperatures, which showed that their conductivity increases with the increase in temperature and varies nonlinearly with the bulk composition. We find that for most of the compositions studied, the activation energy deduced from the temperature variation of their conductivity obeys a thermodynamical model that interrelates the defect Gibbs energy with the bulk elastic and expansivity data.
The quest to improve the thermoelectric figure of merit has mainly followed the roadmap of lowering the thermal conductivity while keeping unaltered the power factor of the material. Ideally an electron-crystal phonon-glass system is desired. In this work, we report an extraordinary reduction of the cross-plane thermal conductivity in crystalline (TiNiSn):(HfNiSn) half-Heusler superlattices. We create SLs with thermal conductivities below the effective amorphous limit, which is kept in a large temperature range (120-300 K). We measured thermal conductivity at room temperature values as low as …
We argue that the L-aspartic acid nickel chloride crystal reported by the authors of the title paper (Optics Communications 2013) is actually the well-known diaqua(L-aspartato)nickel(II) hydrate crystal.
Understanding the electronic transport properties of layered, van der Waals transition metal halides (TMHs) and chalcogenides is a highly active research topic today. Of particular interest is the evolution of those properties with changing thickness as the 2D limit is approached. Here, we present the electrical conductivity of exfoliated single crystals of the TMH, cluster magnet, Nb3Cl8, over a wide range of thicknesses both with and without hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) encapsulation. The conductivity is found to increase by more than three orders of magnitude when the thickness is decrease…
We use a magnetothermal resistance method to measure the lattice thermal conductivity of a single crystal of Bi$_2$Te$_3$ from 5 to 60 K. We apply a large transverse magnetic field to suppress the electronic thermal conduction while measuring thermal conductivity and electrical resistivity. The lattice thermal conductivity is then calculated by extrapolating the thermal conductivity versus electrical conductivity curve to a zero electrical conductivity value. Our results show that the measured phonon thermal conductivity follows the $e^{(Δ_{min}/T)}$ temperature dependence and the Lorenz ratio…
Discovering the physical requirements for meeting the indefinite permittivity in natural material as well as proposing a new natural hyperbolic media offer a possible route to significantly improve our knowledge and ability to confine and controlling light in optoelectronic devices. We demonstrate the hyperbolicity in a class of materials with hexagonal P6/mmm and P6$_{3}$/mmc layered crystal structures and its physical origin is thoroughly investigated. By utilizing density functional theory and solving the Bethe-Salpeter equation (BSE), we find that the layered crystal structure and symmetry…
We studied the thermal conductivity of graphene phononic crystal (GPnC), also named as graphene nanomesh, by molecular dynamics simulations. The dependences of thermal conductivity of GPnCs on both length and temperature are investigated. It is found that the thermal conductivity of GPnCs is significantly lower than that of graphene and can be efficiently tuned by changing the porosity and period length. For example, the ratio of thermal conductivity of GPnC to thermal conductivity of graphene can be changed from 0.1 to 0.01 when the porosity is changed from about 21% to 65%. The phonon partic…
Two-dimensional crystals, single sheets of layered materials, often show distinct properties desired for optoelectronic applications, such as larger and direct band gaps, valley- and spinorbit effects. Being atomically thin, the low amount of material is a bottleneck in photophysical and photochemical applications. Here, we propose the formation of stacks of two-dimensional crystals intercalated with small surfactant molecules. We show, using first principles calculations, that already the very short surfactant methyl amine electronically decouples the layers. We demonstrate the indirect-direc…
Thermal conductivity is a fundamental material property but challenging to predict, with less than 5% out of about $10^5$ synthesized inorganic materials being documented. In this work, we extract the structural chemistry that governs lattice thermal conductivity, by combining graph neural networks and random forest approaches. We show that both mean and variation of unit-cell configurational properties, such as atomic volume and bond length, are the most important features, followed by mass and elemental electronegativity. We chart the structural chemistry of lattice thermal conductivity into…
We present diagonal and off-diagonal elements of the permittivity and conductivity tensor up to the second order in magnetization for cubic crystals. We express all tensor elements as a function of a general sample orientation, for arbitrary magnetization direction and for (001), (011) and (111) surface orientations. Finally, we discuss, how to extract values of quadratic elements G of the second order permittivity tensors for different sample surface orientations from both experiment and ab-initio calculations.
Silicon and Germanium monopnictides SiP, SiAs, GeP and GeAs form a family of 2D layered semiconductors. We have succeeded in growing bulk single crystals of these compounds by melt-growth under high pressure (0.5-1 GPa) in a cubic anvil hot press. Large (mm-size), shiny, micaceous crystals of GeP, GeAs and SiAs were obtained, and could be exfoliated into 2D flakes. Small and brittle crystals of SiP were yielded by this method. High-pressure sintered polycrystalline SiP and GeAs have also been successfully used as a precursor in the Chemical Vapor Transport growth of these crystals in the prese…
The lattice dynamics of low-frequency rigid-plane modes in metallic (graphene multilayers, GML) and in insulating (hexagonal boron-nitride multilayers, BNML) layered crystals is investigated. The frequencies of shearing and compression (stretching) modes depend on the layer number ${\EuScript N}$ and are presented in the form of fan diagrams. The results for GML and BNML are very similar. In both cases only the interactions (van der Waals and Coulomb) between nearest-neighbor planes are effective, while the interactions between more distant planes are screened. A comparison with recent Raman s…
We present first-principles calculations of elastic properties of multilayered two-dimensional crystals such as graphene, h-BN and 2H-MoS2 which shows that their Poisson's ratios along out-of-plane direction are negative, near zero and positive, respectively, spanning all possibilities for sign of the ratios. While the in-plane Poisson's ratios are all positive regardless of their disparate electronic and structural properties, the characteristic interlayer interactions as well as layer stacking structures are shown to determine the sign of their out-of-plane ratios. Thorough investigation of …
Layered bismuthides of the family ATM2Bi2 are showing very interesting structural and physical properties. Here, we report crystal growth and characterization of new ternary layered bismuthides: RbCd2Bi2, RbZn2Bi2 and KZn2Bi2. Single crystals were grown by self-flux technique. As grown crystals were characterized by combination of powder X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and single crystal X-ray diffraction. All novel compounds crystallize in layered ThCr2Si2 structure type with plate-like morphology with weak bonding between layers. Signific…
Layered indium selenide (InSe) is a van der Waals solid that has emerged as a promising material for high-performance ultrathin solar cells. The optoelectronic parameters that are critical to photoconversion efficiencies, such as hot carrier lifetime and surface recombination velocity, are however largely unexplored in InSe. Here, these key photophysical properties of layered InSe are measured with femtosecond transient reflection spectroscopy. The hot carrier cooling process is found to occur through phonon scattering. The surface recombination velocity and ambipolar diffusion coefficient are…
The rich electronic and band structures of monolayered crystals distinguished from their layered bulk counterparts offer versatile physical/chemical properties and applications.1-5 Their fabrications, particularly the top-down "exfoliations", are successful promised by the weak Van der Waals force between monolayers.6-9 Differentially, un-zipping ultra-thin crystals (e.g. with only one layer of crystal plane) from non-layered structures is highly challenging due to the strong chemical bond between planes and atoms. Alterative finely controlled growth of these ultra-thin materials is not really…
We report the synthesis and thermoelectric transport properties of As-doped layered pnictogen oxyselenides NdO0.8F0.2Sb1-xAsxSe2 (x < 0.7), which are predicted to show high-performance thermoelectric properties based on first-principles calculation. The crystal structure of these compounds belongs to the tetragonal P4/nmm space group (No. 129) at room temperature. The lattice parameter c decreases with increasing x, while a remains almost unchanged among the samples. Despite isovalent substitution of As for Sb, electrical resistivity significantly rises with increasing x. Very low thermal cond…
The heat transfer properties of the organic molecular crystal $α$-RDX were studied using three phonon-based thermal conductivity models. It was found that the widely used Peierls-Boltzmann model for thermal transport in crystalline materials breaks down for $α$-RDX. We show this breakdown is due to a large degree of anharmonicity that leads to a dominance of diffusive-like carriers. Despite being developed for disordered systems, the Allen-Feldman theory for thermal conductivity actually gives the best description of thermal transport. This is likely because diffusive carriers contribute to ov…
The thermal transport properties of oriented polymers are of fundamental and practical interest. High thermal conductivities ($\gtrsim 50$ Wm$^{-1}$K$^{-1}$) have recently been reported in disentangled ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) films, considerably exceeding prior reported values for oriented films. However, conflicting explanations have been proposed for the microscopic origin of the high thermal conductivity. Here, we report a characterization of the thermal conductivity and mean free path accumulation function of disentangled UHMWPE films (draw ratio $\sim 200$) using…
Ac electrical measurements have been reported for alkali halide mixed crystals that were melt grown from NaCl, KCl and KBr starting materials. They showed a nonlinear variation of all the electrical parameters with the bulk composition. Here, we show that these mixed systems, depending on their major constituent, are classified into three categories in each of which, the activation energy for the ac conductivity increases linearly with B$Ω$, where B is the isothermal bulk modulus and $Ω$ the mean volume per atom.
In this paper we report an extensive neutron diffraction investigation at high temperature on the BaCe0.80Y0.20O2.9 proton conducting material. Our results precisely define the structural evolution of the compound as a function of temperature which is from a monoclinic (room temperature) to a cubic (800C) structure. Neutron data have been correlated to calorimetric measurements (TGA and DSC) and conductivity properties of the material.
The thermal conductivity of a crystal is sensitive to the presence of surfaces and nanoscale defects. While this opens tremendous opportunities to tailor thermal conductivity, a true "phonon engineering" of nanocrystals for a specific electronic or thermoelectric application can only be achieved when the dependence of thermal conductivity on the defect density, size, and spatial population is understood and quantified. Unfortunately, experimental studies of effects of nanoscale defects are quite challenging. While molecular dynamics simulations are effective in calculating thermal conductivity…
