The recent detections of the gravitational wave (GW) event GW170817 and its electromagnetic counterpart GRB 170817A produced by a binary neutron star (NS) merger is a new milestone of multimessenger astronomy. The time interval between these two signals has attracted widespread attention from physicists. In the braneworld scenario, GWs could propagate through the bulk while electromagnetic waves (EMWs) are bounded on the brane, i.e., our Universe. Therefore, the trajectories of GWs and EMWs may follow different pathes. If GWs and EMWs are originated simultaneously from the same source on the brane, they are expected to arrive at the observer successively. Consequently, the time delay between GW170817 and GRB 170817A may carry the information of the extra dimension. In this paper, we try to investigate the phenomenon in the context of a five-dimensional dS ($\text{dS}_5$) spacetime. We first study two special Universe models, i.e., de Sitter and Einstein-de Sitter models, and calculate the gravitation horizon radius in each case. For the real Universe, we then consider the $Λ$CDM model. Our results show that for the de Sitter model of the Universe, the $\text{dS}_5$ radius could not contribute to the time delay. With the data of the observation, we constrain the $\text{dS}_5$ radius to $\ell\gtrsim7.5\times10^{2}\,\text{Tpc}$ for the Einstein-de Sitter model and $\ell\gtrsim2.4\times10^{3}\,\text{Tpc}$ for the $Λ$CDM model. After considering the uncertainty in the source redshift and the time-lags given by different astrophysical processes of the binary NS merger, we find that our constraints are not sensitive to the redshift in the range of (0.005, 0.01) and the time-lag in the range of (-100s, 1.734s).
Two recent publications have reported intriguing analyses, tentatively suggesting that some aspects of IceCube data might be manifestations of quantum-gravity-modified laws of propagation for neutrinos. We here propose a strategy of data analysis which has the advantage of being applicable to several alternative possibilities for the laws of propagation of neutrinos in a quantum spacetime. In all scenarios here of interest one should find a correlation between the energy of an observed neutrino and the difference between the time of observation of that neutrino and the trigger time of a GRB. We study the system of static scalar fields coupled to charged compact reflecting stars through both analytical and numerical methods. We enclose the star in a box and our solutions are related to cases without box boundaries when putting the box far away from the star. We provide bottom and upper bounds for the radius of the scalar hairy compact reflecting star. We obtain numerical scalar hairy star solutions satisfying boundary conditions and find that the radius of the hairy star in a box is continuous in a range, which is very different from cases without box boundaries where the radius is…
It has recently been proposed that the accreting collapsed object GRO J1655--40 could contain a non-zero gravitomagnetic monopole, and hence could be better described with the more general Kerr-Taub-NUT (KTN) spacetime, instead of the Kerr spacetime. This makes the KTN spacetime astrophysically relevant. In this paper, we study properties of various circular orbits in the KTN spacetime, and find the locations of circular photon orbits (CPOs) and innermost-stable-circular-orbits (ISCOs). Such orbits are important to interpret the observed X-ray spectral and timing properties of accreting collap…
In this paper we study the correspondence between the real part of quasinormal modes (QNMs) and the shadow radius in a wormhole spacetime. Firstly we consider the above correspondence in a static and spherically symmetric wormhole spacetime and then explore this correspondence numerically by considering different wormhole models having specific redshift functions. To this end, we generalize this correspondence to the rotation wormhole spacetime and calculate the typical shadow radius of the rotating wormhole when viewed from the equatorial plane. We argue that due to the rotation and depending…
The dependence of the black hole (BH) shadow and thermodynamics may be structured in the regular spacetime. Taking the regular Bardeen-AdS BH as an example, the relationship between the shadow radius and the event horizon radius is derived. It is found that these two radii display a positive correlation, implying that the BH temperature can be rewritten as a function of shadow radius in the regular spacetime. By analyzing the phase transition curves under the shadow context, we found that the shadow radius can replace the event horizon radius to present the BH phase transition process, and the…
Black hole perturbation theory is a useful approach to study interactions between black holes and fundamental fields. A particular class of black hole solutions arising out of modification of Einstein's general theory of relativity are regular black holes (RBHs) which can be constructed using a nonlinear electrodynamic Lagrangian. Because of their importance, we are interested in studying the behavior of three kinds of such RBHs under perturbations generated by an external field. Indeed, we investigate the quasinormal modes (QNMs) of a massive scalar field propagating near the RBHs which is no…
Given a set of sources and one-point function data for a Lorentzian holographic QFT, does the Fefferman-Graham expansion converge? If it does, what sets the radius of convergence, and how much of the interior of the spacetime can be reconstructed using this expansion? As a step towards answering these questions we consider real analytic CFT data, where in the absence of logarithms, the radius is set by singularities of the complex metric reached by analytically continuing the Fefferman-Graham radial coordinate. With the conformal boundary at the origin of the complex radial plane, real Lorentz…
Null geodesics, quasinormal modes of a massless scalar field perturbation and the correspondence with shadow radii are investigated in the background spacetime of high-dimensional Einstein-Yang-Mills black holes. Based on the properties of null geodesics, we obtain the connection between the radius of a photon sphere and the radius of a horizon in the five- and six-dimensional Einstein-Yang-Mills spacetimes. Especially in the five-dimensional case, there exist two branches for the radius of a photon sphere, but only the branch outside the event horizon satisfies the condition of circular null …
From the viewpoint of differential geometry and topology, we investigate the characterization of the shadows in a Kerr spacetime. Two new quantities, the length of the shadow boundary and the local curvature radius are introduced. Each shadow can be uniquely determined by these two quantities. For the black hole case, the result shows that we can constrain the black hole spin and the angular coordinate of the observer only by measuring the maximum and minimum of the curvature radius. While for the naked singularity case, we adopt the length parameter and the maximum of the curvature radius. Th…
We refine and analytically prove an old proposition due to Calabi and Markus on the shape of timelike geodesics of anti--de Sitter space in the ambient flat space. We prove that each timelike geodesic forms in the ambient space a circle of the radius determined by $Λ$, lying on a Euclidean two--plane. Then we outline an alternative proof for $AdS_4$. We also make a comment on the shape of timelike geodesics in de Sitter space.
In this paper, we investigate the effect of higher curvature corrections from Gauss-Bonnet gravity on the shadow of charged black holes in both $AdS$ and Minkowski spacetimes. The null geodesic equations are computed in $d=5$ spacetime dimensions by using the directions of symmetries and Hamilton-Jacobi equation. With the null geodesics in hand, we then proceed to evaluate the celestial coordinates ($α, β$) and the radius $R_s$ of the black hole shadow and represent it graphically. The effects of charge $Q$ of the black hole and the Gauss-Bonnet parameter $γ$ on the radius of the shadow $R_s$ …
Based on the geometric-optics correspondence between the parameters of a quasinormal mode and the conserved quantities along geodesics, we propose an equation to calculate the typical shadow radius for asymptotically flat and rotating black holes when viewed from the equatorial plane given by \begin{equation}\notag \bar{R}_s=\frac{\sqrt{2}}{2}\left(\sqrt{\frac{ r_0^{+}}{f'(r)|_{r_0^{+}}}}+\sqrt{\frac{ r_0^{-}}{f'(r)|_{r_0^{-}}}}\right), \end{equation} with $r_0^{\pm}$ being the radius of circular null geodesics for the corresponding mode. Furthermore we have explicitly related the shadow radiu…
In this work we study the quasilocal energy as in [11] for a constant radius surface in Kerr spacetime in Boyer-Lindquist coordinates. We show that under suitable conditions for isometric embedding, for a stationary observer the quasilocal energy defined in [11] for constant radius in a Kerr like spacetime is exactly equal to the Brown-York quasilocal energy [2]. By some careful estimations, we show that for a constant radius surface in the Kerr spacetime which is outside the ergosphere the embedding conditions for the previous result are satisfied. We discuss extremal solutions as described i…

In this article we study the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) of electrically charged particles in the electrically charged Reissner-Nordström spacetime, the Kerr-Newman spacetime and the Kerr-Sen spacetime. We find that the radius of the ISCO increases with an increasing particle-black hole charge product $|qQ|$ in the case of attractive Coulomb interaction $qQ<0$. For repulsive Coulomb interaction, the ISCO radius first decreases to a minimum and then increases again, until it diverges as the charge product approaches one. If the charge $Q$ of the black hole is very small, the minimum …
Analyzing the Influence of Geometrical Deformation on Photon Sphere and Shadow Radius: A New Analytical Approach -Stationary, and Axisymmetric Spacetime
The classical geodesics of timelike particles in Schwarzschild spacetime is analyzed according to the particle starting radius $r$, velocity $v$ and angle $α$ against the radial outward direction in the reference system of an local static observer. The region of escape, bound and capture orbits in the parameter space of $(r,~v,~α)$ are solved using the three cases of the effective potential. It is found that generally for radius smaller than $4M$ or velocity larger than $c/\sqrt{2}$ there will be no bound orbits. While for fixed radius larger than $4M$ (or velocity smaller than $c/\sqrt{2}$), …
