We give a permutation model in which Stone's Theorem (every metric space is paracompact) is false and the Boolean Prime Ideal Theorem (every ideal in a Boolean algebra extends to a prime ideal) is true. The erring metric space in our model attains only rational distances and is not metacompact. Transfer theorems give the comparable independence in the Zermelo-Fraenkel setting, answering a question of Good, Tree and Watson.
Moisil in 1941, while constructing the algebraic models of n-valued Łukasiewicz logic defined the set $B^{[n]}$,where $B$ is a Boolean algebra and `n' being a natural number. Further it was proved by Moisil himself the representations of n-valued Łukasiewicz Moisil algebra in terms of $B^{[n]}$. In this article, structural representation results for Stone, dual Stone and double Stone algebras are proved similar to Moisil's work by showing that elements of these algebras can be looked upon as monotone ordered tuple of sets. 3-valued semantics of logic for Stone algebra, dual Stone algebras and …
In this article we investigate the notion and basic properties of Boolean algebras and prove the Stone's representation theorem. The relations of Boolean algebras to logic and to set theory will be studied and, in particular, a neat proof of completeness theorem in propositional logic will be given using Stone's theorem from Boolean algebra.
We prove that the form of conditional independence at play in database theory and independence logic is reducible to the first-order dividing calculus in the theory of atomless Boolean algebras. This establishes interesting connections between independence in database theory and stochastic independence. As indeed, in light of the aforementioned reduction and recent work of Ben-Yaacov [4], the former case of independence can be seen as the discrete version of the latter.
The standard topological representation of a Boolean algebra via the clopen sets of a Stone space requires a nonconstructive choice principle, equivalent to the Boolean Prime Ideal Theorem. In this paper, we describe a choice-free topological representation of Boolean algebras. This representation uses a subclass of the spectral spaces that Stone used in his representation of distributive lattices via compact open sets. It also takes advantage of Tarski's observation that the regular open sets of any topological space form a Boolean algebra. We prove without choice principles that any Boolean …
We give a definition of some classes of boolean algebras generalizing free boolean algebras; they satisfy a universal property that certain functions extend to homomorphisms. We give a combinatorial property of generating sets of these algebras, which we call n -independent. The properties of these classes (n-free and omega-free boolean algebras) are investigated. These include connections to hypergraph theory and cardinal invariants on these algebras. Related cardinal functions, n Ind, which is the supremum of the cardinalities of n-independent subsets; i_n, the minimum size of a maximal n -i…
De Vries Duality generalizes Stone duality between Boolean algebras and Stone spaces to a duality between de Vries algebras (complete Boolean algebras equipped with a subordination relation satisfying some axioms) and compact Hausdorff spaces. This duality allows for an algebraic approach to region-based theories of space that differs from point-free topology. Building on the recent choice-free version of Stone duality developed by Bezhanishvili and Holliday, this paper establishes a choice-free duality between de Vries algebras and a category of de Vries spaces. We also investigate connection…
In this article we will focus our attention on the variety of distributive bisemilattices and some linguistic expansions thereof: bounded, De Morgan, and involutive bisemilattices. After extending Balbes' representation theorem to bounded, De Morgan, and involutive bisemilattices, we make use of Hartonas-Dunn duality and introduce the categories of 2spaces and 2spaces$^{\star}$. The categories of 2spaces and 2spaces$^{\star}$ will play with respect to the categories of distributive bisemilattices and De Morgan bisemilattices, respectively, a role analogous to the category of Stone spaces with …
A Boolean algebra $\mathcal A$ has the Nikodym property if every pointwise bounded sequence of bounded finitely additive measures on $\mathcal A$ is uniformly bounded. Assuming the Diamond Principle $\Diamond$, we will construct an example of a minimally generated Boolean algebra $\mathcal A$ with the Nikodym property. The Stone space of such an algebra must necessarily be an Efimov space. The converse is, however, not true - again under $\Diamond$ we will provide an example of a minimally generated Boolean algebra whose Stone space is Efimov but which does not have the Nikodym property. The r…
We prove that any Boolean algebra with the subsequential completeness property contains an independent family of size continuum. This improves a result of Argyros from the 80ties which asserted the existence of an uncountable independent family. In fact we prove it for a bigger class of Boolean algebras satisfying much weaker properties. It follows that the Stone spaces of all such Boolean algebras contains a copy of the Cech-Stone compactification of the integers and the Banach space of contnuous functions on them has $l_\infty$ as a quotient. Connections with the Grothendieck property in Ban…

It is well known that the variety of Boolean semirings, which is generated by the three element semiring S, is dual to the category of partially Stone spaces. We place this duality in the context of natural dualities. We begin by introducing a topological structure \uS and obtain an optimal natural duality between the quasi-variety ISP(S) and the category IS_cP+(\uS). Then we construct an optimal and very small structure \uS_os that yields a strong duality. The geometry of some of the partially Stone spaces that take part in these dualities is presented, and we call them "hairy cubes", as they…
Our main result is that any topological algebra based on a Boolean space is the extended Stone dual space of a certain associated Boolean algebra with additional operations. A particular case of this result is that the profinite completion of any abstract algebra is the extended Stone dual space of the Boolean algebra of recognizable subsets of the abstract algebra endowed with certain residuation operations. These results identify a connection between topological algebra as applied in algebra and Stone duality as applied in logic, and show that the notion of recognition originating in compute…
Geometrical stability theory is a powerful set of model-theoretic tools that can lead to structural results on models of a simple first-order theory. Typical results offer a characterization of the groups definable in a model of the theory. The work is carried out in a universal domain of the theory (a saturated model) in which the Stone space topology on ultrafilters of definable relations is compact. Here we operate in the more general setting of homogeneous models, which typically have noncompact Stone topologies. In this paper strongly lambda-homogeneous models (M,R) in which the elements …
We prove a number of dualities between posets and (pseudo)bases of open sets in locally compact Hausdorff spaces. In particular, we show that (1) Relatively compact basic sublattices are finitely axiomatizable. (2) Relatively compact basic subsemilattices are those omitting certain types. (3) Compact clopen pseudobasic posets are characterized by separativity. We also show how to obtain the tight spectrum of a poset as the Stone space of a generalized Boolean algebra that is universal for tight representations.
We make use of a forcing technique for extending Boolean algebras. The same type of forcing was employed in [BK81], [Kos99], and elsewhere. Using and modifying a lemma of Koszmider, and using CH, we obtain an atomless BA, A such that f(A) = smm(A) < u(A), answering questions raised by [Mon08] and [Mon11].
We establish a natural duality between the category of involutive bisemilattices and the category of semilattice inverse systems of Stone spaces, using Stone duality from one side and the representation of involutive bisemilattices as Płonka sum of Boolean algebras, from the other. Furthermore, we show that the dual space of an involutive bisemilattice can be viewed as a GR space with involution, a generalization of the spaces introduced by Gierz and Romanowska equipped with an involution as additional operation.
It is common knowledge in the set theory community that there exists a duality relating the commutative $C^*$-algebras with the family of $B$-names for complex numbers in a boolean valued model for set theory $V^B$. Several aspects of this correlation have been considered in works of the late $1970$'s and early $1980$'s, for example by Takeuti, and by Jech. Generalizing Jech's results, we extend this duality so as to be able to describe the family of boolean names for elements of any given Polish space $Y$ (such as the complex numbers) in a boolean valued model for set theory $V^B$ as a space …
We generalize the Boolean power construction to the setting of compact Hausdorff spaces. This is done by replacing Boolean algebras with de Vries algebras (complete Boolean algebras enriched with proximity) and Stone duality with de Vries duality. For a compact Hausdorff space $X$ and a totally ordered algebra $A$, we introduce the concept of a finitely valued normal function $f:X\to A$. We show that the operations of $A$ lift to the set $FN(X,A)$ of all finitely valued normal functions, and that there is a canonical proximity relation $\prec$ on $FN(X,A)$. This gives rise to the de Vries powe…
Given a Boolean algebra $A$, we construct another Boolean algebra $B$ with no uncountable well-ordered chains such that the Banach space of real valued continuous functions $C(K_A)$ embeds isometrically into $C(K_B)$, where $K_A$ and $K_B$ are the Stone spaces of $A$ and $B$ respectively. As a consequence we obtain the following: If there exists an isometrically universal Banach space for the class of Banach spaces of a given uncountable density $κ$, then there is another such space which is induced by a Boolean algebra which is not universal for Boolean algebras of cardinality $κ$. Such a phe…
A Boolean power S of a commutative ring R has the structure of a commutative R-algebra, and with respect to this structure, each element of S can be written uniquely as an R-linear combination of orthogonal idempotents so that the sum of the idempotents is 1 and their coefficients are distinct. In order to formalize this decomposition property, we introduce the concept of a Specker R-algebra, and we prove that the Boolean powers of R are up to isomorphism precisely the Specker R-algebras. We also show that these algebras are characterized in terms of a functorial construction having roots in t…
Various topological concepts are often involved in the research of mathematical logic, and almost all of these concepts can be regarded as developing from the Stone representation theorem. In the Stone representation theorem, a Boolean algebra is represented as the algebra of the clopen sets of a Stone space. And based on this, a natural connection is established between the structure of Stone space and the semantics of propositional logic. In other words, models of a propositional theory are represented as points in a Stone space. This enables us to use the concepts of topology to describe ma…
It follows from a theorem of Rosenthal that a compact space is $ccc$ if and only if every Eberlein continuous image is metrizable. Motivated by this result, for a class of compact spaces $\mathcal{C}$ we define its orthogonal $\mathcal{C}^\perp$ as the class of all compact spaces for which every continuous image in $\mathcal{C}$ is metrizable. We study how this operation relates classes where centeredness is scarce with classes where it is abundant (like Eberlein and $ccc$ compacta), and also classes where independence is scarce (most notably weakly Radon-Nikodým compacta) with classes where i…
For a signature L with at least one constant symbol, an L-structure is called minimal if it has no proper substructures. Let S_L be the set of isomorphism types of minimal L-structures. The elements of S_L can be identified with ultrafilters of the Boolean algebra of quantifier-free L-sentences, and therefore one can define a Stone topology on S_L. This topology on S_L generalizes the topology of the space of n-marked groups. We introduce a natural ultrametric on S_L, and show that the Stone topology on S_L coincide with the topology of the ultrametric space S_L iff the ultrametric space S_L i…
Starting from Boolean algebras of languages closed under quotients and using duality theoretic insights, we derive the notion of Boolean spaces with internal monoids as recognisers for arbitrary formal languages of finite words over finite alphabets. This leads to a setting that is well-suited for applying existing tools from Stone duality as applied in semantics. The main focus of the paper is the development of topo-algebraic constructions pertinent to the treatment of languages given by logic formulas. In particular, using the standard semantic view of quantification as projection, we deriv…
