The innovative concept of Electric Aircraft is a challenging topic involving different control objectives. For instance, it becomes possible to reduce the size and the weight of the generator by using the battery as an auxiliary generator in some operation phases. However, control strategies with different objectives can be conflicting and they can produce undesirable effects, even instability. For this reason an integrated design approach is needed, where stability can be guaranteed in any configuration. In other words, the design of the supervisory controller must be interlaced with that of low-level controllers. Moreover, uncertainties and noisy signals require robust control techniques and the use of adaptiveness in the control algorithm. In this paper, an aeronautic application aiming at recharging batteries and to use the battery to withstand generator overloads is addressed. Detailed and rigorous stability proofs are given for any control configuration, including the switching phases among different control objectives. Effectiveness of the proposed strategies is shown by using a detailed simulator including switching electronic components.
Electric and hybrid-electric aircraft can help our society transition towards more sustainable aviation and lower greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This paper provides solutions to minimize the direct operating cost (DOC) for hybrid-electric aircraft. The solution is the positive real root of a quintic polynomial which is derived using Pontryagin's minimum principle. By properly selecting a hybridization factor, one can also find the cruise airspeed corresponding to the minimum DOC of an electric aircraft. The optimal airspeed is integrated into the Rapidly-exploring Random Trees Star (RRT*) pat…
We examine two configurations for parallel hybrid electric aircraft, one with, and one without, a mechanical connection between the engines and the electric motors. For this two designs, we then review the power allocation problem in the context of aircraft energy management for a 19-seat conceptual Hybrid Electric Aircraft. We then represent the original optimal control problem as a finite-dimensional optimization and validate the second-order sufficient conditions for global optimality of the obtained solution. This is then followed by a sensitivity analysis of the fuel consumption on the in…
In this paper, we propose a novel framework of air traffic management (ATM). The framework is in particular characterized by the trajectory planning of weakly supervised aircraft; the air traffic control (ATC) does not completely determine the trajectory of each aircraft unlike conventional planning methods, but determines allowable safe sets of trajectories. ATC requests pilots to select their own trajectories from the sets, and the pilots determine ones by pursuing their own aims. For example, the selection can be based on pilot preferences and airline strategies. This two stage ATM system c…
DC-DC converters with galvanic isolation are a key element in the aircraft DC distribution system and Dual and Triple Active Bridge converters are one of the most interesting candidates in this application. The high-frequency transformer leakage inductances play a key role in the AC Link of these converters. This leakage inductances determine the power transfer capability of the converter and shape the AC link currents. The leakage inductance value is related to the distribution of the transformer windings and it changes with the RMS value of the AC link current. In this paper, first a high fr…

Improvements in rechargeable batteries are enabling several electric urban air mobility (UAM) aircraft designs with up to 300 miles of range with payload equivalents of up to 7 passengers. We find that novel UAM aircraft consume between 130 Wh/passenger-mile up to ~1,200 Wh/passenger-mile depending on the design and utilization, relative to an expected consumption of over 220 Wh/passenger-mi for terrestrial electric vehicles and 1,000 Wh/passenger-mile for combustion engine vehicles. We also find that several UAM aircraft designs are approaching technological viability with current Li-ion batt…
Enhanced Equivalent Circuit Model for High Current Discharge of Lithium-Ion Batteries with Application to Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing Aircraft
The accurate online estimation of the road-friction coefficient is an essential feature for any advanced brake control system. In this study, a data-driven scheme based on a MLP Neural Net is proposed to estimate the optimum friction coefficient as a function of windowed slip-friction measurements. A stochastic NN weights drop-out mechanism is used to online estimate the confidence interval of the estimated best friction coefficient thus providing a characterization of the epistemic uncertainty associated to the NN block. Open loop and closed loop simulations of the landing phase of an aircraf…
Aircraft manufacturing relies on pre-order bookings. The configuration of the to be assembled aircraft is fixed by the design assisted market surveys. The sensitivity of the supply chain to the market conditions, makes, the relationship between the product (aircraft) and the associated service (aviation), precarious. Traditional model to mitigate this risk to profitability rely on increasing the scales of operations. However, the emergence of new standards of air quality monitoring and insistence on the implementation, demands additional corrective measures. In the quest for a solution, this r…

Due to the increasing market share of electric vehicles (EVs), the optimal thermal management (TM) of batteries has recently received significant attention. Optimal battery temperature control is challenging, requiring a detailed model and numerous parameters of the TM system, which includes fans, pumps, compressors, and heat exchangers. This paper proposes a supervised learning strategy for the optimal operation of the TM system in an EV. Specifically, for TM subsystems, individual artificial neural networks (ANNs) are implemented and trained with data obtained under normal EV driving conditi…
This paper describes a control approach for large-scale electricity networks, with the goal of efficiently coordinating distributed generators to balance unexpected load variations with respect to nominal forecasts. To mitigate the difficulties due to the size of the problem, the proposed methodology is divided in two steps. First, the network is partitioned into clusters, composed of several dispatchable and non dispatchable generators, storage systems, and loads. A clustering algorithm is designed with the aim of obtaining clusters with the following characteristics: (i) they must be compact…

The aviation industry aims to reduce CO2 emission by reducing energy consumption and benefitting from more electrical systems than those based on fossil fuels. The more electric aircraft (MEA) can take advantage of the drives based on wide bandgap (WBG) based power modules that are lighter and can bear higher voltages and currents. However, the fast-rise and repetitive voltage pulses generated by WBG-based systems can endanger the insulating property of dielectric materials due to the partial discharges. PDs cause the local breakdown of insulation materials in regions with high electric field …
