The amount of cold, molecular gas in high-redshift galaxies is typically inferred from proxies of molecular hydrogen (H$_2$), such as carbon monoxide (CO) or neutral atomic carbon ([CI]) and molecular gas mass conversion factors. The use of these proxies, however, relies on modeling and observations that have not been directly measured outside the local universe. Here, we use recent samples of high-redshift gamma-ray burst (GRB) and quasar molecular gas absorbers to determine this conversion factor $α_{\rm [CI]}$ from the column density of H$_2$, which gives us the mass per unit column, and the [CI]($J=1$) column density, which provides the luminosity per unit column. This technique allows us to make direct measurements of the relative abundances in high-redshift absorption-selected galaxies. Our sample spans redshifts of z=1.9-3.4 and covers two orders of magnitude in gas-phase metallicity. We find that $α_{\rm [CI]}$ scales linearly with the metallicity: $\log α_{\rm [CI]} = -1.13\times \log(Z/Z_{\odot}) + 1.33$, with a scatter of $σ_{α_{\rm [CI]}} = 0.2$ dex. Using a sample of emission-selected galaxies at z~0-5, with both [CI] and CO line detections, we apply the $α_{\rm [CI]}$ conversion to derive independent estimates of the molecular gas mass and $α_{\rm CO}$. We find a remarkable agreement between the molecular gas masses inferred from the absorption-derived $α_{\rm [CI]}$ compared to typical $α_{\rm CO}$-based estimates, and an inferred metallicity evolution of $α_{\rm CO}$ that is consistent with $α_{\rm [CI]}$ and previous estimates from the literature. These results thus support the use of the absorption-derived $α_{\rm [CI]}$ conversion factor for emission-selected star-forming galaxies and demonstrate that both methods probe the same universal properties of molecular gas in the local and high-redshift universe.
It has been found that there is a quasi-linear scaling relationship between the gamma-ray luminosity in GeV energies and the total infrared luminosity of star-forming galaxies, i.e. $L_γ\propto L_{\rm IR}^α$ with $α\simeq 1$. However, the origin of this linear slope is not well understood. Although extreme starburst galaxies can be regarded as calorimeters for hadronic cosmic ray interaction and thus a quasi-linear scaling may hold, it may not be the case for low star-formation-rate (SFR) galaxies, as the majority of cosmic rays in these galaxies are expected to escape. We calculate the gamma-…
An evolution of luminosity of galaxies in emission lines or wavelength ranges in which they are sensitive to the star formation process is caused by burning out of the most massive O-class stars during a few million years after a starburst. We study the impact of this effect on the luminosity function (LF) of a sample of star-forming galaxies. We introduce several types of LFs: an initial LF after a starburst, current, time-averaged and sample ones. We find the relations between them in general and specify them in the case of the luminosity evolution law proposed for the luminous compact galax…
Context. Near a dozen star-forming galaxies have been detected in gamma-rays by the Fermi observatory in the last decade. A remarkable property of this sample is the quasi-linear relation between the gamma-ray luminosity and the star formation rate, obtained assuming that the latter is well traced by the infra-red luminosity of the galaxies. The non-linearity of this relation has not been fully explained yet. Aims. We aim at determining the biases derived from the use of the infrared luminosity as a proxy for the star formation rate, and shed light onto the more fundamental relation between th…
We present the first study of GALEX far ultra-violet (FUV) luminosity functions of individual star-forming regions within a sample of 258 nearby galaxies spanning a large range in total stellar mass and star formation properties. We identify ~65,000 star-forming regions (i.e., FUV sources), measure each galaxy's luminosity function, and characterize the relationships between the luminosity function slope (alpha) and several global galaxy properties. A final sample of 82 galaxies with reliable luminosity functions are used to define these relationships and represent the largest sample of galaxi…
Utilizing low-luminosity star-forming systems discovered in the H$α$ Dots survey, we present spectroscopic observations undertaken using the KPNO 4m telescope for twenty-six sources. With determinations of robust, "direct"-method metal abundances, we examine the properties of these dwarf systems, exploring their utility in characterizing starburst galaxies at low luminosities and stellar masses. We find that the H$α$ Dots survey provides an effective new avenue for identifying star-forming galaxies in these regimes. In addition, we examine abundance characteristics and metallicity scaling rela…
We have tested some relations for star formation rates used in extra-galactic studies for regions within the Galaxy. In nearby molecular clouds, where the IMF is not fully-sampled, the dust emission at 24 micron greatly underestimates star formation rates (by a factor of 100 on average) when compared to star formation rates determined from counting YSOs. The total infrared emission does no better. In contrast, the total far-infrared method agrees within a factor of 2 on average with star formation rates based on radio continuum emission for massive, dense clumps that are forming enough massive…
We examine the redshift evolution of standard strong emission-line diagnostics for Hbeta-selected star-forming galaxies using the local SDSS sample and a new z = 0.2 - 2.3 sample obtained from HST WFC3 grism and Keck DEIMOS and MOSFIRE data. We use the SDSS galaxies to show that there is a systematic dependence of the strong emission-line properties on Balmer-line luminosity, which we interpret as showing that both the N/O abundance and the ionization parameter increase with increasing line luminosity. Allowing for the luminosity dependence tightens the diagnostic diagrams and the metallicity …
Aims: We wish to separate and quantify the CO luminosity and CO-H2 conversion factor applicable to diffuse but partially-molecular ISM when H2 and CO are present but C+ is the dominant form of gas-phase carbon. Methods: We discuss galactic lines of sight observed in \HI, HCO+ and CO where CO emission is present but the intervening clouds are diffuse (locally \AV\ $\la 1$ mag) with relatively small CO column densities $\NCO \la 2\times10^{16}\pcc$. We separate the atomic and molecular fractions statistically using \EBV\ as a gauge of the total gas column density and compare NH2 to the observed …
We present clustering analyses of identically-selected star-forming galaxies in 3 narrow redshift slices (at z=0.8, z=1.47 and z=2.23), from HiZELS, a deep, near-infrared narrow-band survey. The HiZELS samples span the peak in the cosmic star-formation rate density, identifying typical star-forming galaxies at each epoch. Narrow-band samples have well-defined redshift distributions and are therefore ideal for clustering analyses. We quantify the clustering of the three samples, and of H-alpha luminosity-selected subsamples, initially using simple power law fits to the two-point correlation fun…
We use ultraviolet imaging taken with the XMM-Newton Optical Monitor telescope (XMM-OM), covering 280 square arcminutes in the UVW1 band (effective wavelength 2910 Angstroms) to measure rest-frame ultraviolet (1500 Angstrom) luminosity functions of galaxies with redshifts z between 0.6 and 1.2. The XMM-OM data are supplemented by a large body of optical and infrared imaging to provide photometric redshifts. The XMM-OM data have a significantly narrower point-spread-function (resulting in less source confusion) and simpler K-correction than the GALEX data previously employed in this redshift ra…
We investigate star forming scaling relations using Bayesian inference on a comprehensive data sample of low- (z<0.1) and high-redshift (1<z<5) star forming regions. This full data set spans a wide range of host galaxy stellar mass ($M_{*} \sim10^6-10^{11} M_{\odot}$) and clump star formation rates (SFR $ \sim10^{-5}-10^2 M_\odot yr^{-1}$). We fit the power-law relationship between the size (r$_{Hα}$) and luminosity (L$_{Hα}$) of the star forming clumps using the Bayesian statistical modeling tool Stan that makes use of Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) sampling techniques. Trends in the scaling…
The Cygnus-X star-forming complex is one of the most active regions of low and high mass star formation within 2 kpc of the Sun. Using mid-infrared photometry from the IRAC and MIPS Spitzer Cygnus-X Legacy Survey, we have identified over 1800 protostar candidates. We compare the protostellar luminosity functions of two regions within Cygnus-X: CygX-South and CygX-North. These two clouds show distinctly different morphologies suggestive of dissimilar star-forming environments. We find the luminosity functions of these two regions are statistically different. Furthermore, we compare the luminosi…

We explore the distribution of RMS=SFR/SFR_MS (where SFR_MS is the star formation rate of "Main Sequence" star-forming galaxies) for AGN hosts at z=1. We split our sample into two bins of X-ray luminosity divided at Lx=2x10^43erg s-1 to investigate whether the RMS distribution changes as a function of AGN power. Our main results suggest that, when the RMS distribution of AGN hosts is modelled as a log-normal distribution (i.e. the same shape as that of MS galaxies), galaxies hosting more powerful X-ray AGNs (i.e. Lx>2x10^43erg s-1) display a narrower RMS distribution that is shifted to higher …
Measurement of the evolution of both active galactic nuclei (AGN) and star-formation in galaxies underpins our understanding of galaxy evolution over cosmic time. Radio continuum observations can provide key information on these two processes, in particular via the mechanical feedback produced by radio jets in AGN, and via an unbiased dust-independent measurement of star-formation rates. In this paper we determine radio luminosity functions at 325 MHz for a sample of AGN and star-forming galaxies by matching a 138 deg sq. radio survey conducted with the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT), …
We investigate the evolution of the ortho-to-para ratio of overall (gas + ice) H$_2$ via the nuclear spin conversion on grain surfaces coated with water ice under physical conditions that are relevant to star- and planet-forming regions. We utilize the rate equation model that considers adsorption of gaseous H$_2$ on grain surfaces which have a variety of binding sites with a different potential energy depth, thermal hopping, desorption, and the nuclear spin conversion of adsorbed H$_2$. It is found that the spin conversion efficiency depends on the H$_2$ gas density and the surface temperatur…
Star-forming regions on different scales, such as giant molecular clouds in our Galaxy and star-forming galaxies, emit GeV gamma-rays. These are thought to originate from hadronic interactions of cosmic-ray (CR) nuclei with the interstellar medium. It has recently been shown that the gamma-ray luminosity ($L_γ$) of star-forming galaxies is well correlated with their star formation rates (SFR). We investigated \textsl{Fermi} data of eight Galactic molecular clouds in the Gould belt and found that molecular clouds do not follow the $L_γ-{\rm SFR}$ correlation of star-forming galaxies. We also co…
We investigate the central sub-arcsec region of the low-luminosity active galactic nucleus NGC 1052, using a high-angular resolution dataset that covers 10 orders of magnitude in frequency. This allows us to infer the continuum emission within the innermost $\sim {17}\,$pc around the black hole to be of non-thermal, synchrotron origin and to set a limit to the maximum contribution of a standard accretion disc. Assuming the canonical 10 per cent mass-light conversion efficiency for the standard accretion disc, its inferred accretion power would be too low by one order of magnitude to account fo…
Luminosity functions have been determined for star cluster populations in 20 nearby (4-30 Mpc), star-forming galaxies based on ACS source lists generated by the Hubble Legacy Archive. Comparisons are made with other recently generated cluster catalogs demonstrating that the HLA-generated catalogs are of similar quality, but in general do not go as deep. A typical cluster luminosity function can be approximated by a power-law, $dN/dL\propto L^α$, with an average value for $α$ of $-2.37$ and RMS scatter = 0.18 when using the F814W ("$I$") band. We find that galaxies with high rates of star forma…
We present a joint analysis of the rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) luminosity functions of continuum-selected star-forming galaxies and galaxies dominated by active galactic nuclei (AGNs) at $z \sim$ 4. These 3,740 $z \sim$ 4 galaxies are selected from broad-band imaging in nine photometric bands over 18 deg$^2$ in the \textit{Spitzer}/HETDEX Exploratory Large Area Survey (SHELA) field. The large area and moderate depth of our survey provide a unique view of the intersection between the bright end of the galaxy UV luminosity function (M$_{AB}<-$22) and the faint end of the AGN UV luminosity functi…
In order to perform a more complete census of active galactic nuclei (AGN) in the local Universe, we investigate the use of the HeII~$λ4685$ emission line diagnostic diagram by Shirazi & Brinchmann (2012) in addition to the standard methods based on other optical emission lines. The He II based diagnostics is more sensitive to AGN ionization in the presence of strong star formation than conventional line diagnostics. We survey a magnitude-limited sample of 63,915 galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7 at $0.02<z<0.05$ and use both the conventional BPT emission line diagnosti…
We present mid-infrared (MIR) luminosity functions (LFs) of local star-forming (SF) galaxies in the AKARI NEP-Wide Survey field. In order to derive more accurate luminosity function, we used spectroscopic sample only. Based on the NEP-Wide point source catalogue containing a large number of infrared (IR) sources distributed over the wide (5.4 sq. deg.) field, we incorporated the spectroscopic redshift data for about 1790 selected targets obtained by optical follow-up surveys with MMT/Hectospec and WIYN/Hydra. The AKARI continuous 2 to 24 micron wavelength coverage as well as photometric data f…
We study H-alpha, far- and near-ultraviolet luminosity functions (LF) of the sample of 795 luminous compact star-forming galaxies with z<0.65. The parameters of optimal functions for LFs are obtained using the maximum likelihood method and the accuracy of fitting is estimated with the chi-squared method. We find that these LFs cannot be reproduced by the Schechter function because of an excess of very luminous galaxies. On the other hand, the Saunders function, the log-normal distribution and some new related functions are good approximations of LFs. The fact that LFs are not reproduced by the…
We analyze Spitzer GLIMPSE, MSX, and WMAP images of the Milky Way to identify 8 micron and free-free sources in the Galaxy. Seventy-two of the eighty-eight WMAP sources have coverage in the GLIMPSE and MSX surveys suitable for identifying massive star forming complexes (SFC). We measure the ionizing luminosity functions of the SFCs and study their role in the turbulent motion of the Galaxy's molecular gas. We find a total Galactic free-free flux f_ν = 46177.6 Jy; the 72 WMAP sources with full 8 micron coverage account for 34263.5 Jy (~75%), with both measurements made at ν=94GHz (W band). We f…
Strongly star-forming galaxies are prolific in producing the young and most massive star clusters (YMCs) still forming today. This work investigates the star cluster luminosity functions (CLFs, dN/dL ~ L^{-alpha}) of 26 starburst and luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs) taken from the SUNBIRD survey. The targets were imaged using near-infrared (NIR) K-band adaptive optics systems. Single power-law fits of the derived CLFs result in a slope ranging between 1.53 and 2.41, with the median and average of 1.87 +/- 0.23 and 1.93 +/- 0.23, respectively. Possible biases such as blending effects and the …
The assessment of the relationship between radio continuum luminosity and star formation rate (SFR) is of crucial importance to make reliable predictions for the forthcoming ultra-deep radio surveys and to allow a full exploitation of their results to measure the cosmic star formation history. We have addressed this issue by matching recent accurate determinations of the SFR function up to high redshifts with literature estimates of the 1.4 GHz luminosity functions of star forming galaxies (SFGs). This was done considering two options, proposed in the literature, for the relationship between t…
We use public data for 105783 quasars from The Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 7 (DR7) that include spectral monochromatic luminosities at 5100Å, 3000Å, and 1350Å, and the corresponding observed broad-band ugriz, VRI (converted), JHK and WISE magnitudes, and derive broad-band-to-monochromatic luminosity ratios independent of a cosmological model. The ratios span the redshift range of z=0.1-4.9 and may serve as a proxy for measuring the bolometric luminosity, broad line region (BLR) radii and/or black hole masses, whenever flux-calibrated spectra are unavailable or the existing spe…
We study the properties of star-forming galaxies selected at 610 MHz with the GMRT in a survey covering $\sim$1.86 deg$^2$ down to a noise of $\sim$7.1\,$μ$Jy / beam. These were identified by combining multiple classification diagnostics: optical, X-ray, infrared and radio data. Of the 1685 SFGs from the GMRT sample, 496 have spectroscopic redshifts whereas 1189 have photometric redshifts. We find that the IRRC of star-forming galaxies, quantified by the infrared-to-1.4 GHz radio luminosity ratio $\rm{q_{IR}}$, decreases with increasing redshift: $\rm{q_{IR}\,=\,2.86\pm0.04(1\,+\,z)^{-0.20\pm0…
We present measurements of the dependence of the clustering amplitude of galaxies on their star formation rate (SFR) and stellar mass ($M_*$) at $0.7 < z < 1.5$ to assess the extent to which environment affects these properties. While these relations are well determined in the local universe, they are much more poorly known at earlier times. For this analysis we make use of the near-IR HST WFC3 grism spectroscopic data in the five CANDELS fields obtained as part of the 3D-HST survey. We make projected 2-point correlation function measurements using $\sim$6,000 galaxies with accurate redshifts,…
The H$α$ and H$β$ emission line luminosities measured in a single integrated spectrum are affected in non-trivial ways by point-to-point variations in dust attenuation in a galaxy. This work investigates the impact of this variation when estimating global H$α$ luminosities corrected for the presence of dust by a global Balmer decrement. Analytical arguments show that the dust-corrected H$α$ luminosity is always underestimated when using the global H$α$/H$β$ flux ratio to correct for dust attenuation. We measure this effect on 156 face-on star-forming galaxies from the Mapping Nearby Galaxies a…
We construct a semi-analytic model to study the effect of far-ultraviolet (FUV) radiation on gas chemistry from embedded protostars. We use the Protostellar Luminosity Function (PLF) formalism of Offner & McKee (2011) to calculate the total, FUV, and ionizing cluster luminosity for various protostellar accretion histories and cluster sizes. We compare the model predictions with surveys of Gould Belt star-forming regions and find the Tapered Turbulent Core model matches best the mean luminosities and the spread in the data. We combine the cluster model with the photo-dissociation region astroch…
We present high S/N spectroscopy of 15 emission-line galaxies (ELGs) cataloged in the KPNO International Spectroscopic Survey (KISS), selected for their possession of high equivalent width [O III] lines. The primary goal of this study was to attempt to derive direct-method ($T_e$) abundances for use in constraining the upper-metallicity branch of the $R_{23}$ relation. The spectra cover the full optical region from [O II]λλ3726,3729 to [S III]λλ9069,9531 and include the measurement of [O III]λ4363 in 13 objects. From these spectra, we determine abundance ratios of helium, nitrogen, oxygen, neo…
Tracing Evolution in Massive Protostellar Objects (TEMPO) -- I: Fragmentation and emission properties of massive star-forming clumps in a luminosity limited ALMA sample
Studies of the high-redshift rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) luminosity functions (LFs) have typically treated the star-forming galaxy and active galactic nuclei (AGN) populations separately, as they have different survey depth and area requirements. However, the recent advent of wide-area deep ground-based imaging surveys now probe volumes large enough to discover AGNs, at depths sensitive enough for fainter star-forming galaxies, bridging these two populations. Using results from such surveys as observational constraints, we present a methodology to jointly empirically model the evolution of the…
Long slit spectra recorded with GMOS on Gemini South are used to examine the star-forming history of the lenticular galaxy NGC 5102. Structural and supplemental photometric information are obtained from archival Spitzer [3.6] images. Comparisons with model spectra point to luminosity-weighted metallicities that are consistent with the colors of resolved red giant branch stars in the disk. The nucleus has a luminosity-weighted age at visible wavelengths of ~1 Gyr, and the integrated light is dominated by stars that formed over a time period of only a few hundred Myr. For comparison, the luminos…
We show that the XCO factor, which converts the CO luminosity into the column density of molecular hydrogen has similar values for dense, fully molecular gas and for diffuse, partially molecular gas. We discuss the reasons of this coincidence and the consequences for the understanding of the interstellar medium.
A majority of the $γ$-ray emission from star-forming galaxies is generated by the interaction of high-energy cosmic rays with the interstellar gas and radiation fields. Star-forming galaxies are expected to contribute to both the extragalactic $γ$-ray background and the IceCube astrophysical neutrino flux. Using roughly 10\,years of $γ$-ray data taken by the {\it Fermi} Large Area Telescope, in this study we constrain the $γ$-ray properties of star-forming galaxies. We report the detection of 11 bona-fide $γ$-ray emitting galaxies and 2 candidates. Moreover, we show that the cumulative $γ$-ray…
We identify protostars in Spitzer surveys of nine star-forming molecular clouds within 1 kpc: Serpens, Perseus, Ophiuchus, Chamaeleon, Lupus, Taurus, Orion, Cep OB3, and Mon R2, which combined host over 700 protostar candidates. Our diverse cloud sample allows us to compare protostar luminosity functions in these varied environments. We combine photometry from 2MASS J, H, and Ks bands and Spitzer IRAC and MIPS 24 micron bands to create 1 - 24 micron spectral energy distributions (SEDs). Using protostars from the c2d survey with well-determined bolometric luminosities (Lbol), we derive a relati…
The GaLactic and Extragalactic All-sky Murchison Widefield Array (GLEAM) is a radio continuum survey at 76-227 MHz of the entire southern sky (Declination $<+30°$) with an angular resolution of $\approx 2$ arcmin. In this paper, we combine GLEAM data with optical spectroscopy from the 6dF Galaxy Survey to construct a sample of 1,590 local (median $z \approx 0.064$) radio sources with $S_{200\,\mathrm{MHz}} > 55$ mJy across an area of $\approx 16,700~\mathrm{deg}^{2}$. From the optical spectra, we identify the dominant physical process responsible for the radio emission from each galaxy: 73 per…

We present Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array (ALMA) observations towards 27 low-redshift ($0.02< z<0.2$) star-forming galaxies taken from the Valparaíso ALMA/APEX Line Emission Survey (VALES). We perform stacking analyses of the $^{12}$CO($1-0$), $^{13}$CO($1-0$) and C$^{18}$O($1-0$) emission lines to explore the $L'$ ($^{12}$CO($1-0$))/$L'$($^{13}$CO($1-0$))) (hereafter $L'$($^{12}$CO)/$L'$($^{13}$CO)) and $L'$($^{13}$CO($1-0$))/$L'$(C$^{18}$O($1-0$)) (hereafter $L'$($^{13}$CO)/$L'$(C$^{18}$O) line luminosity ratio dependence as a function of different global galaxy parameters rel…
The IR emission of dust heated by stars provides critical information for galaxy evolution studies. Unfortunately, observations are often limited to the MIR, making templates a necessity. Previously published templates were based on small samples of luminous galaxies, not necessarily representative of normal star-forming galaxies. We construct new dust templates, including instrument-specific relations and software tools that facilitate the estimation of the TIR luminosity and SFR based on one or several fluxes up to z=4. For the first time the templates include a dependence on both TIR lumino…
We present Herschel PACS observations of the [CII] 158 micron emission line in a sample of 24 intermediate mass (9<logM$_\ast$/M$_\odot$<10) and low metallicity (0.4< Z/Z$_\odot$<1.0) galaxies from the xCOLD GASS survey. Combining them with IRAM CO(1-0) measurements, we establish scaling relations between integrated and molecular region [CII]/CO(1-0) luminosity ratios as a function of integrated galaxy properties. A Bayesian analysis reveals that only two parameters, metallicity and offset from the star formation main sequence, $Δ$MS, are needed to quantify variations in the luminosity ratio; …
Star forming galaxies represent a small yet sizable fraction of the X-ray sky (1%-20%, depending on the flux). X-ray surveys allow to derive their luminosity function and evolution, free from uncertainties due to absorption. However, much care must be put in the selection criteria to build samples clean from contamination by AGN. Here we review the possibilities offered by the proposed WFXT mission for their study. We analyze the expected luminosity and redshift distributions of star forming galaxies in the proposed WFXT surveys. We discuss the impact of such a mission on the knowledge of the …
With the goal of investigating the degree to which theMIR luminosity in theWidefield Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) traces the SFR, we analyze 3.4, 4.6, 12 and 22 μm data in a sample of » 140,000 star-forming galaxies or star-forming regions covering a wide range in metallicity 7.66 < 12 + log(O/H) < 9.46, with redshift z < 0.4. These star-forming galaxies or star-forming regions are selected by matching the WISE Preliminary Release Catalog with the star-forming galaxy Catalog in SDSS DR8 provided by JHU/MPA 1.We study the relationship between the luminosity at 3.4, 4.6, 12 and 22 μm from WIS…
Constraints on the $z\sim5$ Star-Forming Galaxy Luminosity Function From $\textit{Hubble Space Telescope}$ Imaging of an Unbiased and Complete Sample of Long Gamma-ray Burst Host Galaxies
We hereby report the discovery of ATLAS17jrp as an extraordinary TDE in star-forming galaxy SDSSJ162034.99+240726.5 in our recent sample of mid-infrared outbursts in nearby galaxies. Its optical/UV light curves rise to a peak luminosity $\sim1.06\times10^{44}\rm\,erg\,s^{-1}$ in about a month and then decay as $\rm t^{-5/3}$ with a roughly constant temperature around 19000~K, and the optical spectra show a blue continuum and very broad Balmer lines with FWHM$\sim$15000 km/s which gradually narrowed to 1400 km/s within 4 years, all agreeing well with other optical TDEs. A delayed and rapidly ri…
We use an unprecedented sample of about 23,000 HII regions detected at an average physical resolution of 67pc in the PHANGS-MUSE sample to study the extragalactic HII region Ha luminosity function (LF). Our observations probe the star-forming disk of 19 nearby spiral galaxies with low inclination and located close to the star formation main sequence at z=0. The mean LF slope $α$ in our sample is =1.73 with a $σ$ of 0.15. We find that $α$ decreases with the galaxy's star formation rate surface density and argue that this is driven by an enhanced clustering of young stars at high gas surface den…
We aim at characterizing the hot phase of the Circum-Galactic Medium in a large sample of galaxies. We stack X-ray events from the SRG/eROSITA eFEDS survey around central galaxies in the GAMA 9hr field to construct radially projected soft X-ray luminosity profiles as a function of their stellar mass and specific star formation rate. We consider samples of quiescent (star-forming) galaxies in the stellar mass range $2\times 10^{10}$ -- $10^{12}$ M$_\odot$ ($3\times 10^9$ -- $6\times10^{11}$ M$_\odot$). For quiescent galaxies, the X-ray profiles are clearly extended throughout the available mass…

We present an analysis of the relationship between the CO-H$_{2}$ conversion factor ($α_{\rm CO}$) and total mass surface density ($Σ_{\rm tot}$) in star-forming galaxies at $z < 1.5$. Our sample, which is drawn from the IRAM Plateau de Bure HIgh-$z$ Blue Sequence Survey (PHIBSS) and the CO Legacy Database for GASS (COLD GASS), includes 'normal,' massive star-forming galaxies that dominate the evolution of the cosmic star formation rate (SFR) at this epoch and probe the $Σ_{\rm tot}$ regime where the strongest variation in $α_{\rm CO}$ is observed. We constrain $α_{\rm CO}$ via existing CO obs…
